Bug#234903: xfree86: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation

You should not have changed initial comments to #. form, but this is not a big deal, real content is fine. Denis

xfree86 override disparity
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the override file for the following file(s): xlibs-dbg_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says section is oldlibs, override says libdevel. xlibs-dev_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says section is oldlibs, override says libdevel. xlibs-dev_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says priority is extra, override says optional. xlibs-pic_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says section is oldlibs, override says libdevel. xlibs-pic_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says priority is extra, override says optional. Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why. A quick look at the postrm script shows a few suspicious *greps, which might get called with no file arguments and hence cause the hang. Adding a set -x confirms this: Removing libxpm4 ... + '[' remove = remove ']' + deregister_x_lib_dir_with_ld_so + local dir ldsoconf + dir=/usr/X11R6/lib + ldsoconf=/etc/ld.so.conf + fgrep -qsx /usr/X11R6/lib /etc/ld.so.conf ++ echo '/usr/X11R6/lib/lib*.so.*.*' + '[' '/usr/X11R6/lib/lib*.so.*.*' = '/usr/X11R6/lib/lib*.so.*.*' ']' + observe 'removing /usr/X11R6/lib directory from /etc/ld.so.conf' + '[' -n '' ']' + fgrep -qsvx /usr/X11R6/lib dpkg: error processing libxpm4 (--purge): So, in this case it's the second fgrep in deregister_x_lib_dir_with_ld_so. Small note: I have only superficially looked at the postrm, but the smoking_guns=$(grep ...) in find_culprits also looks suspicuous; I've tried and if any of xbase-clients|xfree86-common|xfs|xlibs is installed the possible_culprits variable is empty and so would cause the grep above to hang, too, I believe. I agreed. Unfortunately, my primary home box, a Blue White PowerMac G3, has developed erratic problems with memory over the past couple of says. gcc segfaults non-reproducibly, and Mozilla and the X server have also spontaneously segfaulted. I cannot get 4.3.0-3 built on this machine in this state, so I would like a volunteer (a Debian Developer, for accountability purposes) to build the XFree86 trunk in SVN, revision 1115, and test the resulting packages. Unless you happen to build on powerpc I will be unable to test the packages myself, so I will rely on you to do the testing. I will sign and upload the packages on your testimony that they test all right. Well, if nobody steps up, i can do the build this afternoon. I have a powerpc box with enough disk space and a 1GHz G4, so it should be ok, and so you could test it afterward. I don't think i have access to your SVN repo though, so if you could maybe mail me the .diff.gz, i would be glad to build it. I am wrong naturally, and found the anonymous access repository, and will start a build as soon as i have finished building the chroot and finished the checkout. Once it is built, i will upload the stuff somewhere you can get access to it and test it before uploading. Ok, build started. I hope that the build depends are ok. If they are, you will have the packages at the latest tomorrow morning. To late for this evening's deadline anyway. Mmm, it seems someone already uploaded 4.3.0-3. So is my build actually still needed ? Friendly, Sven Luther
Bug#234388: xserver-xfree86: [tdfx] X server refuses to use DRI at 1280x960 resolution

I think this behaviour is not justified by any technical reason, This seems a hasty conclusion to reach if you're not very familiar with the driver code and the video hardware. Branden, I am seeing this too. The important point here is that this is a regression from 4.2.1, where the hardware is capable of DRI within an X session of 1600x1200. Note that the resolution in question here is not the resolution of the GLX graphic, but the resolution of the X display. That is, the accelerated graphic I had working was at 640x480 and would appear windowed or fullscreen via DGA. Now glxinfo with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose is reporting: libGL error: XF86DRIQueryDirectRenderingCapable failed Perhaps you could review the changes made to the tdfx driver between XFree86 4.2.1 and 4.3.0 (the tdfx driver has not, to date, been changed on xf-4_3-branch). It looks to me like the error message you're complaining of was not added in 4.3.0. I don't see anything that is obviously causing this to be triggered. However, I am unsure about how this code fits in the wider implementation. -Chris signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#235657: DRI programs change gamma value
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0-2.woody.1 Severity: important The Problem: When I start any program which makes use of hardware 3D acceleration like glxinfo, the gamma value of the hole screen is getting lighter. Bug#235652: xbase-clients: key remaped with xmodmap fails to respond as expected to shifting

Pressing Shift+backspace does not generate |, as expected. Pressing Shift+|\ also does not generate |. This behavior has been reported to function as expected to me since at lease XFree 3.3.x but not =4.3 Hi, I believe that this is due to /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/pc: key BKSP { type=CTRL+ALT, symbols[Group1]= [ BackSpace, Terminate_Server ] }; and thus is not a bug. You have to set type to TWO_LEVEL if you want Shift+backspace to produce a bar. For the record, I proposed in http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-french/2004/debian-user-french-200402/msg01539.html a solution (in French, but it mostly consists of shell commands) for someone who needed to customize his function keys without root access. I will be glad to learn if there are better alternatives to customize XKB. Denis

Bug#235671: signal 11 with intel 865G
Package: xserver-xfree86-dbg Version: 4.3.0-2 Severity: normal I have an IBM ThinkCentre desktop with the Intel 865G graphics chipset, which is supposedly supported by XFree v. 4.3.0 or later. However, when I run 'startx' (for an 18 T860 LCD display with the manufacturer-recommended refresh/sync rates, below), I get Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. I am using Debian/testing, but upgraded to the xserver-xfree86, xserver-xfree86-dbg, and xserver-common from unstable. I get the same error with both the -dbg and non-dbg versions. I have a 2.4.24 kernel compiled with CONFIG_AGP_INTEL and CONFIG_AGP_I810. Below, I've appended the stack trace from bt full on the core dump from the -dbg version. The same machine works fine with XFree86 4.3.0 under RedHat 9. Any hints of things to try would be greatly appreciated. Cordially, Steven G. If any contributor to Debian's X packaging has any objection to the above statements, please speak up.) Looks like the issue revolves arounf the advertisement of Xfree86. OK, I may be naive, but could we suggest Xfree's owners that they can handle their own advertising without the X-oz licence: When Xfree starts, there's always 1 oe 2 seconds of a grey mesh. Why don't they place their advertising here. The advert could last one or 2 seconds or the time required for [xkw]dm to start. This way, they would have their advertising without changing the licenses or impacting Xfree developers. Cheers (I really hope not to start a flame war ...)

Bug#234788: Major data loss because of .xsession-errors

It is the Xsession script in /etc/X11 that does this chmod. deleted [question to the general public:] Do you think this chmod should just go away? Considering the tendency of X applications to spew gods only know what to stdout/stderr, and thus into .xsession-errors, this is probably still a good idea. Bug#228898: MTRR problem seen on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D
FWIW, I have seen the error message mtrr: no more MTRR's available on my mother's laptop, showing up in dmesg more than a hundred times. This system is not online and accessible to me now, so I can't check the details, but it is a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D, a fairly early version, I think it has a Celeron 1GHz CPU. That could hint about the details of the system if anybody knows this line of products. The system is running mostly Woody, but because I couldn't get the video card to work with 4.1.0, I used somebody's 4.2 backports, but I can't remember whose. At first it seemed to cause the system to be very slow, but I now believe that was unrelated, and that the problem has no readily visible consequences. That's about all I have now, I'm afraid. However, if it is interesting, please let me know and let me know where to dig for stuff of more interest, I could give it a shot when I have access to it again. Bug#235687: more info for syntax error in X package install scripts
This hit me too. It is because of either a bash-ism in the install script, or a deficiency in dash (the shell currently acting as /bin/sh). The work around, then, is to replace /bin/sh with a link to bash and try the install again. If dash has installed itself as /bin/sh, this is as easy as 'dpkg-reconfigure dash'. Bug#235699: xlibs: upstream default is no more pc104, but pc105
Package: xlibs Version: 4.3.0-2 Severity: minor In /etc/X11/xkb/keymap/xfree86: default xkb_keymap us { xkb_keycodes{ include xfree86 }; xkb_types { include default }; xkb_compatibility { include default }; xkb_symbols { include us(pc105) }; xkb_geometry{ include pc }; }; The relevant changelog entry is: 931. Change the default base symbols map from pc104 to pc105, which should fix most cases where the LSGT key isn't defined. Also change the default XkbModel from pc101 to pc105 (Ivan Pascal). This tends to demonstrate that upstream was aware of the misconfiguration problems that Debian users are currently experiencing, and their answer was to set pc105 the default. A similar change should certainly be performed in xserver-xfree86.config. It won't of course help when upgrading from previous releases, but at least new users will have safer default values. Denis

Bug#235704: MonitorLayout detection fails with VGA + S-Video out on Radeon 7000 / QY
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0-3 I have a Radeon 7000 / QY (rv100) with both VGA and S-Video outputs. I have my CRT monitor connected to the VGA out. There is nothing connected to the S-Video out. The radeon driver claims to detect two monitors, but fails to fetch the VertSync and HorizSync for the 2nd monitor (which makes sense, as there isn't one), so I end up with a 640x480 display instead of 1600x1200. Detection worked correctly with 4.2.1. Adding the line Option MonitorLayout CRT,NONE to the Device section works around the problem. This is a problem that I met when using X4.3, that anything which enabled the TV-out would cause the screen to become milky, as if the brightness was compressed into the upper half of the range only. Daniel -- What should I look for in a good bird bath? And in response, thus spake the Oracle: } In a good bird bath? I'd expect to find birds. } In a bad bird bath, tarantulas.

Re: Question on X and new license...

Cheers (I really hope not to start a flame war ...) They don't want people to be able to legally remove the advertisement.
