Goddam, I should never have talked about voodoo for this translation
as it seems to have been mesmerized by some specific incantation...:-)

Branden and Denis, when you'll stop laughing.can you check the
currently attached file (this will make this bug log one of the hugest

You should not have changed initial comments to #. form, but this
is not a big deal, real content is fine.

xfree86 override disparity

2004-03-01 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

xlibs-dbg_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says section is oldlibs, override says
libdevel.
xlibs-dev_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says section is oldlibs, override says
libdevel.
xlibs-dev_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says priority is extra, override says
optional.
xlibs-pic_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says section is oldlibs, override says
libdevel.
xlibs-pic_4.3.0-3_all.deb: package says priority is extra, override says
optional.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

[NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one
like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore
this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in
due course, but until then the installer will send these automated
mails; sorry.]

with both 2.4.24 and 2.6.2 kernels. No problems if DRI is disabled.

First, many thanks to all involved in finally getting XFree86 4.3.0 into
unstable!

Well, DRI is broken after an upgrade from 4.3.0-0pre1v5 to 4.3.0-2.
Downgrading xlibmesa-dri to 4.3.0-0pre1v5 works around this problem.

The following output of glxinfo may be helpful:

Hello.

There's a typo on the 644th line of /var/lib/dpkg/info/xdm.config -
the end-of-line character is unescaped, which makes xdm (and, thus,
x-window-system) uncofigurable by apt-get. Adding a backslash as the
last character on that line fixes the problem.

Cheers,

Note to self: once the bug number is allocated, set submitter to
Eduard.

Also, probably also need to use -n flag to ln on at least some of these
to get the effect he desires.

Hello,

currently you cannot run debian/rules binary multiple times if you try
to rerun a build without wiping the build tree, because it stops
somewhere on ln or gzip failure to overwrite files. The change below
makes it possible though.

Dear X maintainers,

glxinfo will report that direct rendering is not available
(LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo gives libGL error:
XF86DRIQueryDirectRenderingCapable returned false)
although the X server reports that direct rendering is enabled
(and Mode 0666 in Section DRI).
xdriinfo reports libGL is too old.
This is actually on two machines with different hardware (mga; radeon)
on which direct rendering worked nicely with 4.3.0-prexx.

Perhaps that is because libGL is 1.2 but everything else is 1.3?

Thanks and best regards,
Bernd

dri doesn't seem to work after update to 4.3.0-2, the version from
experimental worked fine (after some tweaks, see Bug#225759) with same
configuration and hardware.

I found that opengl apllications like tuxracer or gl-117 are slow and unusable
meanwhile I found no problem associated with driver's module
in the XFree86.log. drm is enabled and agp accelaration too

Package: libxpm4
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: serious

Hi,

When removing libxpm4 (but I guess that depending on the order in which
apt removes them, any library from xfree86 could do this) the postrm
script hangs, waiting on input (observed from the fact that when it is
backgrounded it immediately goes to STOPPED state).

A quick look at the postrm script shows a few suspicious *greps, which
might get called with no file arguments and hence cause the hang.
Adding a set -x confirms this:

Removing libxpm4 ...
+ '[' remove = remove ']'
+ deregister_x_lib_dir_with_ld_so
+ local dir ldsoconf
+ dir=/usr/X11R6/lib
+ ldsoconf=/etc/ld.so.conf
+ fgrep -qsx /usr/X11R6/lib /etc/ld.so.conf
++ echo '/usr/X11R6/lib/lib*.so.*.*'
+ '[' '/usr/X11R6/lib/lib*.so.*.*' = '/usr/X11R6/lib/lib*.so.*.*' ']'
+ observe 'removing /usr/X11R6/lib directory from /etc/ld.so.conf'
+ '[' -n '' ']'
+ fgrep -qsvx /usr/X11R6/lib
dpkg: error processing libxpm4 (--purge):

So, in this case it's the second fgrep in deregister_x_lib_dir_with_ld_so.

Small note: I have only superficially looked at the postrm, but the
smoking_guns=$(grep ...) in find_culprits also looks suspicuous; I've
tried and if any of xbase-clients|xfree86-common|xfs|xlibs is installed
the possible_culprits variable is empty and so would cause the grep above
to hang, too, I believe. You may want to check that.

Regards,

Filip

Hi !

On standard belgian keyboards, the \ symbol is located just on the right
of the left-shift key (which is located just above the left ctrl key). But
when I press AltGr + the backslash key, it does nothing. I've found that I
have to press altgr + ) (the key just after the 0 when you use figures
keys above letters). When I type altgr + the backslash key on a text tty, it
works correctly so I don't think it's a locales problem.

Regards,
Robert Derochette

This problem appears to be the same as reported here:
  http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports-bugs/2003-July/009690.html

Description:
XFree86 4.3.0 failed to render underline text if the text rendered
using True Type font (freetype/xtt backend).
How-To-Repeat:
Open mozilla / firebird , set the font to any ttf, surf
anywhere. Notice that the links dont have underline, although
we explicitly set 'Underline links' in mozilla/firebird
preferences.

I made the change recommended in the report above to Debian's 4.3.0,
built it, copied the freetype module over the installed 4.3.0-2's
copy, and it fixes the problem. (This is not as good a test as it
could be, I know. The build failed later on for reasons I have yet to
determine, so I wasn't able to install a full X with this change
present throughout.)

Hello X Strike Force Team,

Attached you'll find a patch which does update the Brazilian Portuguese
(pt_BR) debconf template translation, removing two fuzzy entries and
translating another missing one. After applying the patch, the Brazilian
Portuguese translation will be back to 100% done.

The patch was done against the file provided at
http://gluck.debian.org/~barbier/l10n/material/po/unstable/main/x/xfree86/debian/po/xfree86_4.3.0-2_pt_BR.po.gz
. Also, after updating the translation, the resulting pt_BR.po file was
properly checked agains errors using the msgfmt utility from the gettext package
and no errors were found, sa can be seen bellow :

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/po-debconf/xfree86$ msgfmt -o /dev/null -v pt_BR.po
152 mensagens traduzidas.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/po-debconf/xfree86$

The patch was generated diffing between the file taken from the above
mentioned URL and the fully translated pt_BR.po file mentioned above.
Could you please consider applying it to the CVS so it would be used for
the next Debian's xfree86 package release ?

Regards,

A couple of days ago, James Troup emailed me and asked me to expedite
the release of 4.3.0-3, because the library postrm is very hard on the

I agreed.

Unfortunately, my primary home box, a Blue White PowerMac G3, has
developed erratic problems with memory over the past couple of says.
gcc segfaults non-reproducibly, and Mozilla and the X server have also
spontaneously segfaulted.

I cannot get 4.3.0-3 built on this machine in this state, so I would
like a volunteer (a Debian Developer, for accountability purposes) to
build the XFree86 trunk in SVN, revision 1115, and test the resulting
packages.

Unless you happen to build on powerpc I will be unable to test the
packages myself, so I will rely on you to do the testing. I will sign
and upload the packages on your testimony that they test all right.

Well, if nobody steps up, i can do the build this afternoon. I have a
powerpc box with enough disk space and a 1GHz G4, so it should be ok,
and so you could test it afterward.

I don't think i have access to your SVN repo though, so if you could
maybe mail me the .diff.gz, i would be glad to build it.

I am wrong naturally, and found the anonymous access repository, and
will start a build as soon as i have finished building the chroot and
finished the checkout. Once it is built, i will upload the stuff
somewhere you can get access to it and test it before uploading.

Ok, build started. I hope that the build depends are ok. If they are,
you will have the packages at the latest tomorrow morning. To late for
 this evening's deadline anyway.

Mmm, it seems someone already uploaded 4.3.0-3. So is my build actually
still needed ?

Bug#234388: xserver-xfree86: [tdfx] X server refuses to use DRI at 1280x960 resolution

2004-03-01 Thread Chris Ruvolo
On Tue, Feb 24, 2004 at 02:43:08AM -0500, Branden Robinson wrote:
XFree86 refuses to use DRI at resolutions higher than 1024x768 on a
3dfx Voodoo Banshee and complains with this message on the logs:

(WW) TDFX(0): [dri] To use DRI, with a 16Mb Voodoo 3 or Banshee card,
you must invoke the server using a maximum resolution of 1024x768 or
  lower.

I think this behaviour is not justified by any technical reason,

This seems a hasty conclusion to reach if you're not very familiar with the
driver code and the video hardware.

Branden, I am seeing this too. The important point here is that this is a
regression from 4.2.1, where the hardware is capable of DRI within an X
session of 1600x1200. Note that the resolution in question here is not the
resolution of the GLX graphic, but the resolution of the X display. That
is, the accelerated graphic I had working was at 640x480 and would appear
windowed or fullscreen via DGA.

Now glxinfo with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose is reporting:

libGL error: XF86DRIQueryDirectRenderingCapable failed

Perhaps you could review the changes made to the tdfx driver between
XFree86 4.2.1 and 4.3.0 (the tdfx driver has not, to date, been changed
 on xf-4_3-branch).

It looks to me like the error message you're complaining of was not
 added in 4.3.0.

I don't see anything that is obviously causing this to be triggered.
However, I am unsure about how this code fits in the wider implementation.

That's an interesting point. Can you point out anyone in the other mob

 I'm sorry, I don't understand the question.

That's obvious (to anyone who's not a member of this angry unthinking mob).
But I was curious if you could point to someone who would be better than that.

Still, the problem is most likely keymap related. The KDE keymap

Also, is your xlibs package up to date?

 I also notice the following:

When viewing kde desktop, pressing ctrlaltdel does not get trapped
by X. It falls through to kde and gets trapped by kde.

Also, when viewing the kdm sign-on panel, pressing
 ctrlaltdel does nothing.

ctrl-alt-del isn't special for the X server, ctrl-alt-backspace is.

I don't see anything that is obviously causing this to be triggered.
However, I am unsure about how this code fits in the wider implementation.

This is due to the patch 035_tdfx_disable_dri_on_16mb_with_highres.diff,
which contains the comment:

/* Disable DRI if using a 16Mb card with virtual resolution higher
than
* 1024x768 because DRI does not have enough memory available for
textures
* at higher resolutions, and will not operate correctly.
*/

See also http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=38717 .

Now, this is an odd explanation; 16 MB should be plenty enough for the
DRI at say 1280x1024x16. Mike, do you have a better explanation for this
limit?

 xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-10.

It is the Xsession script in /etc/X11 that does this chmod.

[question to the general public:] Do you think this chmod should just go

I could only do the chmod if $ERRFILE is a symlink, I suppose. Would
that be better?

So I'll keep my fingers crossed that my home box is stable again.

If one selects text using double/tripleclick in a program that uses xterm's
alternate screen buffer facility, the whitespace after the end of the line
is copied. This is not related to the copying (or not) of newlines - the
whitespace is included after the text and before the newline.

XTerm seems now to provide colour definitions for highlighted text
and mouse pointer. Unfortunately, the light colours chosen make xterm
rather unplesant to use when you've set light background colour and
dark text. I tried find X resources file containing these settings,
but looks like these colours have been set at compile time.

Since you only need a few files, probably svn cat.

Bug#235652: xbase-clients: key remaped with xmodmap fails to respond as expected to shifting

2004-03-01 Thread Dave Harding
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: normal

When remapping the \| key to the Backspace key and vice versa on a standard
US 104 keyboard using:

xmodmap -e 'keycode 22 = backslash bar'
xmodmap -e 'keycode 51 = BackSpace'

Pressing backspace generates \ when pressed as expected.
Pressing Shift+backspace does not generate |, as expected. Pressing
Shift+|\ also does not generate |. This behavior has been
reported to function as expected to me since at lease XFree 3.3.x
but not =4.3

Output of xev after remaping, upon pressing backspace:

KeyPress event, serial 25, synthetic NO, window 0x1c1,
root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 4265320, (674,173), root:(677,243),
state 0x0, keycode 22 (keysym 0x5c, backslash), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: \

Output of xev after remaping, upon pressing Shift+Backspace:

KeyPress event, serial 25, synthetic NO, window 0x1c1,
root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 4298603, (795,168), root:(798,238),
state 0x1, keycode 22 (keysym 0x5c, backslash), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: \

This appears to be distro kernel independant, leading me to beleive
it's a problem in the upstream code.

A report under Red Hat 9:
https://www.redhat.com/archives/xfree86-list/2003-September/msg00028.html

Also the bug is present in NetBSD, here's the build info:

Bug#235657: DRI programs change gamma value

2004-03-01 Thread Honschu Lee
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-2.woody.1
Severity: important

The Problem:
When I start any program which makes use of hardware 3D acceleration
like glxinfo, the gamma value of the hole screen is getting lighter. So
every time 3D acceleration was used I have to open a xterm to start
'xgamma -g 1' . In Version 4.3.0-1 I haven't had that problem at all.

Additional Information:
My XFree86 is from http://people.debian.org/~nobse/xfree86/ by
Norbert Tretkowski, which is a woody backport of the unstable packages
by Branden ( 4.3.0-3 ) - I think.

Yes - I previously wrote (it was the bit you chopped of the front of my reply)

This means that they are loaded shortly after boot, and well before kdm starts

Pressing backspace generates \ when pressed as expected.
Pressing Shift+backspace does not generate |, as expected. Pressing
Shift+|\ also does not generate |. This behavior has been
reported to function as expected to me since at lease XFree 3.3.x
 but not =4.3

Hi,

I believe that this is due to /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/pc:
  key BKSP {
  type=CTRL+ALT,
  symbols[Group1]= [ BackSpace,   Terminate_Server ]
  };
and thus is not a bug.

You have to set type to TWO_LEVEL if you want Shift+backspace to produce
a bar. For the record, I proposed in

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-french/2004/debian-user-french-200402/msg01539.html
a solution (in French, but it mostly consists of shell commands) for
someone who needed to customize his function keys without root access.
I will be glad to learn if there are better alternatives to customize
XKB.

Denis

Bug#235671: signal 11 with intel 865G

2004-03-01 Thread Steven G. Johnson
Package: xserver-xfree86-dbg
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: normal

I have an IBM ThinkCentre desktop with the Intel 865G graphics chipset,
which is supposedly supported by XFree v. 4.3.0 or later. However, when
I run 'startx' (for an 18 T860 LCD display with the
manufacturer-recommended refresh/sync rates, below), I get Fatal server
error: Caught signal 11.

I am using Debian/testing, but upgraded to the xserver-xfree86,
xserver-xfree86-dbg, and xserver-common from unstable. I get the same
error with both the -dbg and non-dbg versions. I have a 2.4.24 kernel
compiled with CONFIG_AGP_INTEL and CONFIG_AGP_I810. Below, I've
appended the stack trace from bt full on the core dump from the -dbg
version.

The same machine works fine with XFree86 4.3.0 under RedHat 9.

Any hints of things to try would be greatly appreciated.

Cordially,
Steven G. Johnson

To avoid this problem, i have put this row in my $HOME/.Xmodmap :
keycode 94 = less greater bar brokenbar bar brokenbar
and launch xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap in my .xsession.

Another, probably better, way to avoid this problem is to set your
XkbModel to pc105 instead of pc104.

once debian-legal has made its decision regarding the DFSG-freeness of
the X-Oz license, I'd like to re-purpose it, perhaps as a mail to

any objection to the above statements, please speak up.)

Looks like the issue revolves arounf the advertisement of Xfree86.

OK, I may be naive, but could we suggest Xfree's owners that they can
handle their own advertising without the X-oz licence: When Xfree
starts, there's always 1 oe 2 seconds of a grey mesh. Why don't they
place their advertising here. The advert could last one or 2 seconds
or the time required for [xkw]dm to start.

This way, they would have their advertising without changing the
licenses or impacting Xfree developers.

Cheers

Package: xlibs
Version: 4.0.2-1
Severity: wishlist

The Danish keymap in the current unstable version of xlibs is a bit
annoying, since alt gr+space gives a Non-breaking Space.
This problem shows it's ugly head for example after a pipe in a shell
command: ls | grep someting becomes ls |NBSgrep something, and of
course the shell is unable to find NBSgrep.
My own modification is:
key SPCE {[ space, space ],
[   space,nobreakspace  ]};

So you can still produce a NBS with altgr+shift+space.

If not, could you just detect whether locale is set to C, and otherwhise add a

thank you in advance

That would probably be a security hole (at least a DOS: make ld.so 600
and the system stops working), but I cannot reproduce it with
  xserver-xfree86 4.2.1-10.

It is the Xsession script in /etc/X11 that does this chmod.

deleted

[question to the general public:] Do you think this chmod should just go
 away?

Considering the tendency of X applications to spew gods only know what to
stdout/stderr, and thus into .xsession-errors, this is probably still a
good idea. I can't point to a case where there'd actually be
security-sensitive information included therein, but if there were...

Paranoia over all, I suppose.

Branden currently reviews some patches, which maybe will be included in

In the meantime, you could upgrade to packages available at

Bug#228898: MTRR problem seen on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D

2004-03-01 Thread Kjetil Kjernsmo
FWIW, I have seen the error message mtrr: no more MTRR's available on
my mother's laptop, showing up in dmesg more than a hundred times.

This system is not online and accessible to me now, so I can't check the
details, but it is a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo D, a fairly early version, I
think it has a Celeron 1GHz CPU. That could hint about the details of
the system if anybody knows this line of products. The system is
running mostly Woody, but because I couldn't get the video card to work
with 4.1.0, I used somebody's 4.2 backports, but I can't remember
whose.

At first it seemed to cause the system to be very slow, but I now
believe that was unrelated, and that the problem has no readily visible
consequences.

That's about all I have now, I'm afraid. However, if it is interesting,
please let me know and let me know where to dig for stuff of more
interest, I could give it a shot when I have access to it again.

Best,

Kjetil

Bug#235687: more info for syntax error in X package install scripts

2004-03-01 Thread Damian M Gryski
This hit me too. It is because of either a bash-ism in the install
script, or a deficiency in dash (the shell currently acting as
/bin/sh). The work around, then, is to replace /bin/sh with a link
to bash and try the install again. If dash has installed itself as
/bin/sh, this is as easy as 'dpkg-reconfigure dash'.

OK, I may be naive, but could we suggest Xfree's owners that they can
handle their own advertising without the X-oz licence: When Xfree

place their advertising here. The advert could last one or 2 seconds

This way, they would have their advertising without changing the

Bug#235699: xlibs: upstream default is no more pc104, but pc105

2004-03-01 Thread Denis Barbier
Package: xlibs
Version: 4.3.0-2
Severity: minor

In /etc/X11/xkb/keymap/xfree86:
  default xkb_keymap us {
  xkb_keycodes{ include xfree86 };
  xkb_types   { include default };
  xkb_compatibility   { include default };
  xkb_symbols { include us(pc105)   };
  xkb_geometry{ include pc
  };
  };

The relevant changelog entry is:

 931. Change the default base symbols map from pc104 to pc105, which
should fix most cases where the LSGT key isn't defined. Also
change the default XkbModel from pc101 to pc105 (Ivan Pascal).

This tends to demonstrate that upstream was aware of the misconfiguration
problems that Debian users are currently experiencing, and their answer
was to set pc105 the default. A similar change should certainly be
performed in xserver-xfree86.config.
It won't of course help when upgrading from previous releases, but at
least new users will have safer default values.

Bug#235701: xlibs-dev: circular dependency back to itself

2004-03-01 Thread Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe
Package: xlibs-dev
Version: 4.3.0-3

Hello,

the xlibs-dev package comment states it to be a transitional
package, but I cannot remove it, because it circular depends
back on itself:

xlibs-dev depends on libxrandr-dev
libxrandr-dev depends on libxrender-dev
libxrender-dev depends on xlibs-dev

I currently don't know exactly what package to file the
report for, I've chosen xlibs-dev because this is the
package I wanna get rid of :)

Bug#235704: MonitorLayout detection fails with VGA + S-Video out on Radeon 7000 / QY

2004-03-01 Thread Josh Metzler
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-3

I have a Radeon 7000 / QY (rv100) with both VGA and S-Video outputs. I have
my CRT monitor connected to the VGA out. There is nothing connected to the
S-Video out. The radeon driver claims to detect two monitors, but fails to
fetch the VertSync and HorizSync for the 2nd monitor (which makes sense, as
there isn't one), so I end up with a 640x480 display instead of 1600x1200.
Detection worked correctly with 4.2.1. Adding the line

Option MonitorLayout CRT,NONE

to the Device section works around the problem.

David Schleef pointed this one out to me this afternoon. With dash as

fixes it - basically, dash wants 'EOF' on its own line.

I might have found it if sh were dash on my build box :(

Bug#234025: ATI screen turns milky when using TV-out

2004-03-01 Thread Daniel Pittman
I suspect that this bug report refers to change number 268, aka
Bugzilla #351, and corrected in revision 1.28 of the Radeon driver, as
found at:

http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/ati/radeon_video.c

. Fix Radeon register initialization for RGB offset to fix the
milky-screen problem (Bugzilla #351, Hui [EMAIL PROTECTED]).

This is a problem that I met when using X4.3, that anything which
enabled the TV-out would cause the screen to become milky, as if the
brightness was compressed into the upper half of the range only.

   Daniel

Looks like the issue revolves arounf the advertisement of Xfree86.

OK, I may be naive, but could we suggest Xfree's owners that they can
handle their own advertising without the X-oz licence: When Xfree
starts, there's always 1 oe 2 seconds of a grey mesh. Why don't they
place their advertising here. The advert could last one or 2 seconds
or the time required for [xkw]dm to start.

This way, they would have their advertising without changing the
  licenses or impacting Xfree developers.

  Cheers

(I really hope not to start a flame war ...)

They don't want people to be able to legally remove the advertisement.

And that violates the GPL's no restrictions clause.

Go not unto the Usenet for advice, for you will be told both
yea and nay (and quite a few things that just have nothing at
all to do with the question).
