In the same update that brought me 4.3 I also got new xscreensaver hacks.
Unfortunately one of them called "fontglide" totally locks up the system.
I have no real evidence that dri is the problem, just a hunch.

The bug certainly isn't in the xlibmesa-dri package, as that's only
involved with OpenGL applications. Reassigning to xserver-xfree86,
please mail this bug the information described in the XF86Config(7)
manpage.

The problem might still be related to the DRI though; try not enabling
it to verify that.

Interesting. I disabled dri on the M9 machine and the problem changed
from total machine lockup to merely crashing out of X.None of the
log files had much interesting to say. syslog said:

Bug#235981: xfree86: it's hit me as well

2004-03-03 Thread GCS
Package: xfree86
Severity: normal
Followup-For: Bug #235981

I have linda (and lintian as well) to check my packages. Linda in turn
depends on dash, which if installed, can't cope with the original bug,
gives a lot of:
/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/preinst: 628: Syntax error: end of file unexpected
(expecting ")")
dpkg: error processing xutils_4.3.0-3_i386.deb (--install):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 2
/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/postrm: 621: Syntax error: end of file unexpected
(expecting ")")
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess post-removal script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
xutils_4.3.0-3_i386.deb

on all of the XFree86 packages. As the fix is easy, please just do it.

When remapping the "\|" key to the "Backspace" key and vice versa on a standard
US 104 keyboard using:

xmodmap -e 'keycode 22 = backslash bar'
xmodmap -e 'keycode 51 = BackSpace'

Pressing "backspace" generates "\" when pressed as expected.
Pressing "Shift+backspace" does not generate "|", as expected. Pressing
"Shift+<|\>" also does not generate "|". This behavior has been
reported to function as expected to me since at lease XFree 3.3.x
but not >=4.3

Output of xev after remaping, upon pressing "backspace":

KeyPress event, serial 25, synthetic NO, window 0x1c1,
root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 4265320, (674,173), root:(677,243),
state 0x0, keycode 22 (keysym 0x5c, backslash), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: "\"

Output of xev after remaping, upon pressing "Shift+Backspace":

KeyPress event, serial 25, synthetic NO, window 0x1c1,
root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 4298603, (795,168), root:(798,238),
state 0x1, keycode 22 (keysym 0x5c, backslash), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: "\"

This appears to be distro & kernel independant, leading me to beleive
it's a problem in the upstream code.

I may have spoken too soon. Subsequently, X crashed with a SIGSEGV upon
starting Quake. It is certainly intermittent. I didn't have this problem
with 4.2.1.

Would a stack trace be helpful? I'll try installing the -dbg package when I
get home from work.

Right, running glxgears or some simple cheesy app is not enough.
You must POUND the hell out of the driver with an intensive 3D
application, such as Quake III or something else intensive. It
may take anywhere from a few seconds to 30-45 minutes for the
crash to occur, so this isn't the type of problem that someone
can configure the driver to use 1600x1200, fire it up for 10
seconds, run glxgears and say "hmm, well it works for me".

Bug#236006: xserver-xfree86: less/greater/bar key doesn't work on display :0

2004-03-03 Thread Julien Langer
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0-3

If I start a Xserver at display :0, the less/greater/bar key doesn't work. Xev
receives no event from this key.

The key works if I start a Xserver on another display than :0

Thank you and I appologize for my inabilty to locate that information on
my own. I was still curious as to the change of behavior between
versions of XFree86 prior to 4.3. I examined the change log available
at:
http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/CHANGELOG?rev=HEAD

In the changelog I found:

"675. Fix some problems with the addition of multi-layout scheme to
xkb: some keys that aren't 'alphabetic' should be treated as
such to allow CapsLock+Shift working as expected; sometimes it
is required to load an include file more than once due to
multi-layout configuration, also fix some typos (#5545, Ivan Pascal).

674. XKB programable 'special combinations' (such as Ctrl+Alt+)
also send usual key evants (press and release). Although the
keysym generated in this case is NoSymbol such events can confuse
   some applications (#5546, Ivan Pascal)."

And seeming most relevant to this bug:

"672. Temporarily enable the hard-coded Ctrl-Alt-Backspace terminate
sequence until a better fallback mechanism is implemented (Egbert
  Eich)."

These appear to be under the XFree86 4.2.99.3 (21 December 2002)
release.

If setting the type to TWO_LEVEL works without breaking anything (as 672
implies) it would seem this, or the previous behavior of treating BKSP
as a regular key[1] should be the default behavior.

[1] /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/us on XFree86 Version 4.2.1.1 (Debian
4.2.1-12.1 20031003005825 [EMAIL PROTECTED]):

 key  {[   BackSpace   ]   };

You've empowered me with the knowledge of how to make the changes
myself. I don't know enough about XFree86 to determine if the fallback
mechanism that caused the original hardcoding of the Ctrl+Alt-Backspace
has been implimented. If it has I would suspect the hardcoding of being
a bug, as it is no longer what the developers intended. If the fallback
feature has not been implemented... perhaps this should be wishlist?

Anyhow I leave it to your providence as a DD and I again thank you for
your forthcoming help,

-Dave

Just upgraded my xfree86 packages (i386, binary).

after dpkg-reconfigure dash and answering no, the packages could be installed

The bug certainly isn't in the xlibmesa-dri package, as that's only
involved with OpenGL applications. Reassigning to xserver-xfree86,
please mail this bug the information described in the XF86Config(7)
manpage.

The problem might still be related to the DRI though; try not enabling
it to verify that.

FWIW, it no problem here with an M9 running xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk
described in http://www.freedesktop.org/~dri/snapshots/README.Debian .

Hi.

first, there's a known bug in 4.3.0-2, that prevents DRI from working on i386
based hardware.

So try to upgrade to 4.3.0-3.

If this still doesn't work as desired for you, you could upgrade to

This contains some fixes to the i830 part of the i810 driver grabbed from

It _maybe_ could fix your problems as well...

Bug#235772: xfree86: The exact syntax on which it breaks

2004-03-03 Thread Jan Hudec
Package: xfree86
Severity: grave
Followup-For: Bug #235772

In dash, here-doc end marker must be on a line by itself. This includes
closing parentheses of $(). To fix this bug, it's sufficient to replace
all ocurences of

EOF)

with

EOF

Oh yeah, I remember this one. :-(

AFAIR, the r200_dri.so library is in xlibmesa-dri. Load this package
and you should get a correct output of glxinfo.

Then try glxgears.

If you computer hangs, change the ChipId in XF86Config-4.

Cheers

Michel, thanks for the pointer to this patch. I have made a build without
this patch, and it is functioning normally on my Voodoo3 rev 1. DRI is
working with an X res of 1600x1200. I am able to change VTs and am able to
change X resolutions without issue. I do not use a framebuffer console.

I'm also changing the title to reflect that this is not exclusive to the
Banshee:

xserver-xfree86: [tdfx] want DRI support above 1024x768 on 16MB
Voodoo Banshee rev 3 and Voodoo3 rev 1

If anyone else is having the same problem, feel free to try my build.
It is versioned as 4.3.0-3.0.tdfx:

deb http://chris.ruvolo.net/debian/ xfree86-tdfx/binary-i386/
deb-src http://chris.ruvolo.net/debian/ xfree86-tdfx/source/

Looks like the underfined symbol seems to be the problem
