Is there a reason that OpenGL manpages aren't included in this
package? It includes GLU and GLX manpages, but I can't find GL manpages
in any package.

Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

My laptop has a Mobile Pentium 4 processor and Radeon 7500c gfx. I found
that with xlibmesa3 installed and DRI enabled any program that uses OpenGL
would die with a SIGILL in the radeon_dri.so library.

Investigation revealed that the problem occurred in code containing 3dnow
instructions -- setting MESA_NO_3DNOW prevented the crashes. This in turn
is due to the way the library obtains the capability information for cpus:
it uses CPUID to get the capability bitvectors and passes those around
unchanged. This worked while the bits AMD uses to signal the availability
of 3DNOW were not used by intel as well. In the pentium 4 family, this
assumption no longer holds.

The code that does the probe is found in
xc/extras/Mesa/src/X86/common_x86_asm.S

The obvious quick fix would be to mask the problematic bits in the intel
branch of the code before returning the bitvector. A more complete fix
would be to not use the CPU's capability vector directly, but instead use
it to construct a cability vector for the library.

I mistyped: it was sis_dri.so

not entirely - Dodger blue is easier on my eyes, but I'm considering going to
blue2 (versus the older blue3) if/when I can quantify the contrast issue.

There are simply a lot of to-do items that I'm working on, and since this one
doesn't dump core or cause an infinite loop (or even lose data), it's not
completed yet.

well i had an up to date as of yesterday install of debian unstable, and
besides my usual fix of packages ;) i had done an apt-get install
kde-devel so x devel packages was installed and when i did the dpkg -iO
*.deb stuff it failed on that package. fixed it by apt-get -f install
and it then removed some of the devel packages. 4 of them if i remember
correct. Can't check the version at my machine for the moment but i have
a vague remeberance of some strange versioning combination in one of the
devel packages.

That would be correct, one odd fact is (have been wrestling a bit with
this card since i bought it when xfree86 announced full 3d support and
released it with half broken xvideo and a hard hanging rtcw game;).
long rambling.. just ignore. The funny fact is that the card works
perfect with both those games and all other stuff i have tried if i ran
the cvs debian packages from michael däenzer at the DRI site. and as a
side note since im already testing lots of stuff this week is that
Fedora's xorg packages also works fine.

Yes, I've already restarted X several (many) times since the last time I
upgraded it. But there is still this bug. I upgraded several time my kernel
too : now I use 2.6.6 (mainline), but still this bug.
I use a debian sid up-to-date (upgraded a few hours ago).
In fact, this bug is really old, maybe I'm just a bit more obstinate than
other people, I don't know.
Nevertheless maybe something is new : I don't get this error anymore when X
starts like it does before. Now I only get it when I press an unknow key.
Let me know if I can give you more information.
Thanks.

Yes, that was the case. Sorry I can't test it anymore since I have

Yes, there it is. I saw it one day or two after I wrote this mail. So it
was correctly displayed. I thought it should have been there before.

took the cigarette from my mouth and kissed her again.

Hi. Problem was that I got " Warning: locale not supported by Xlib,
locale set to C" when e.g. running xterm.

But you are right: just using en_US.UTF-8 as LANG works fine. I just
assumed I had to pick one of the locales offered by "locale -a" and thus
never tried to use en_US.UTF-8. I'll ask the maintainer of locale to
add a hint into the manual page.

Thanks for the reply!

Why did you report this as a bug against xdm? What is it you think xdm
is doing wrong, as opposed to wdm and sdm?

1) wdm's init script needs to respect /etc/X11/default-display-manager.
2) sdm will not show up if it does not implement the "Pax Displayicus
Managerius", the protcol used by display managers' maintainer scripts
and init scripts to ensure that they coexist peacefully.

necessary for the next Debian package release, but this ensures that
XTerm #187 is uncontaminated by the XFree86 1.1 license which is
important given all the GPL-licensed derivatives of xterm in the world.
:)

I have submitted your reimplementation to Thomas Dickey, in the event
he's interested in using it.

I do note that it may be difficult to tell which code is yours and which
is "XFree86's", given the trivial nature of the changes. Nevertheless I
appreciate your working with me to establish a good procedure for
circumstances when this will not be the case.

Thanks again!

Thanks for reporting this problem; I am fixing it.

As far as the merge goes, that's up to the kdm maintainer.

If he/she/they feel there is nothing more to do from kdm's angle except
await for this bugfix in xfree86-common, then I suspect they should be
merged.

Well, according to the X server's logfile:

It looks to me like you may have misconfigured the mouse.

It looks like you may have misconfigured your mouse device:

Please use "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" to configure your mouse
correctly.

You can install the "mdetect" package and use the command of the same
name to determine what your mouse port and protocol are.

Well...

Bug #234058 is "gdm: Capslock warning on sparc warns for numlock, not capslock"

and

Bug #237717 is "xserver-xfree86: totem (XVideo) renders hues wrongly",

So, no, I don't think so.

The mouse driver was rewritten for 4.3 to try and autodetect mice.

Another technique would be to remove all InputDevice sections that use
the "mouse" driver from your XF86Config-4 file, and adjust xinitrc and
your display manager configs to start the XFree86 X server with the
"-allowMouseOpenFail" option. See XFree86(1x).

And there is a explanation for setting the tag available on

Hmm, sounds like you're not actually using the hardware cursor or XVideo
after all...

Can you reproduce the problem if you remove the "xlibmesa-dri" package?

After upgrading today, the Alt modifier no longer seems to work. Pressing
Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not swtich to VT1, and Alt-Tab does not switch windows in
Sawfish. Ctrl-Alt-Bksp does shutdown the server. `xev` returns

figure out whats going on.

The next release of Debian's XFree86 packages will render the colors
used in the XTerm-color app-defaults file and the colors documented in
the xterm manpage congruent again.

This was originally a Debian deviation that we should have patched the
manpage to document, but there's no point now, as Debian will no longer
be overriding the upstream color definition.

(This is no cause to rejoice for people who hate the colors I chose for
Debian's xterm years ago, however; it appears I have won Mr. Dickey
over, and he and I now sing the same blues, so to speak. :) )

That's not the right answer; I'm pretty sure the (GNU) C library
supports function calls to inquire as to whether a given locale is
supported.

If some of those function calls are available in a simple shell utility,
I'd be happy to patch the uxterm shell script accordingly. I might even
be able to write it portably enough that it will be accepted upstream by
Mr. Dickey.

This is already the case:

% grep 'xdm start' /var/lib/dpkg/info/xdm.p*
/var/lib/dpkg/info/xdm.postinst:[ -n "$NOSTART" ] || invoke-rc.d xdm start ||

What character set was the attached diff in? I can't get it to make any
sense. Part of it looks like badly-decomposed UTF-8, and part of it
looks like properly-encoded ISO-8859-15.

I am confused. I use "en_US.UTF-8" for my LC_CTYPE myself, have done so
for well over a year (maybe two by now) and have never noticed any
problems.

The GNU C library uses "fuzzy matching" for codeset comparison and I
don't know that locale -a purports to advertise any sort of canonical
list for purposes outside glibc's own implementation.

What problem are you experiencing?
