Severity: important

Hi.  This is being filed against xlibmesa-gl because it's 3D-specific;
but I'm too ignorant of the guts of X to know for a fact that that's
where it belongs.

System: AMD Athlon XP 2000+, Asus A7V333 mobo (Via KT333 chipset),
Matrox Millenium G550 video card. I use the open source
Matrox drivers that accompany the X packages; I do not use
Matrox's proprietary mga_hal driver. I also do not use
gpm.

I recently upgraded X to the version currently in sarge
(4.3.0.dfsg.1-4). Since then, in various 3D apps (e.g. blender,
flightgear, bzflag), I've been seeing some very odd behavior related
to the mouse cursor.

So long as the mouse is not moved, everything is fine. However, if
the mouse cursor is moved, it flickers at high frequency. Also, quite
often, a small rectangular off-colored patch appears at the location
where the mouse cursor started. Typically, the color of that patch is
that of whatever background the application would be writing upon. No
other distortion appears along the path the mouse moves, nor at the
mouse cursor's final destination. Subsequent screen updates
(e.g. because of movement of the aircraft in flightgear) correct the
bogus region, so the distortion is transient. However, in software
where the mouse gets moved a lot, or where the screen isn't being
continuously updated, this can make the screen extremely difficult to
read.

Unfortunately (because this is what I really need 3D graphics for),
this is especially a problem with blender. One manipulates the mouse
small amounts quite a bit; the distorted area prevents you from seeing
the region on which you're working. Using pulldown menus is also
difficult; patches of the blender work area background appear on top
of the menus, and the distortion makes menus difficult to impossible
to read. See

http://www.speakeasy.net/~cmetzler/blender_distorted.png
http://www.speakeasy.net/~cmetzler/blender_distorted02.png

for relatively tame examples of mucked-up menus.

This behavior has occurred in every GL application I've checked which
uses the default X mouse cursor (the above, openuniverse, tuxracer
under the "Oliver's Math Class" course). However, it does *not* occur
with several other 3D apps I tried (tuxracer, gl-117, criticalmass).
These apps are noteable in that they use a different (much larger)
mouse cursor; but I have no idea whether this correlation implies
anything significant.

I never saw this before updating my X installation to the version
currently in sarge (4.3.0.dfsg.1-4); I had been up to date with sarge
before this, so I had been running one of the "dfsg" versions of XF86,
but I'm not sure which that was (that is, which version was replaced
by 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 in sarge). I've looked through the Debian X11
changelog in /usr/share/doc/xlibmesa-gl, several versions back, and I
can't find anything that looks like a likely source for this problem
appearing, so I'm very confused. But I'm happy to try anything you
might suggest to investigate this further. Also, I should have an
Nvidia card ava

I agree completely; and in fact, I'm a bit annoyed with myself that I
didn't find that when I went bug searching prior to filing this one.
Thanks.

I'm not attached to any particular set of cursors; I'd be happy to revert
to what was in use before. However, I'm not sure to what
/etc/alternatives/x-cursor-theme should otherwise be linked. A quick
google only turned up references to linking it to add-on cursor themes;
looking through packages for the file that seems to be the one actually
loaded by X (/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme) didn't turn
up anything. So I'm not sure what to do to revert it. If you have
any guidance, I'd appreciate it.

To the extent that I understand this at all, that seems sensible.

Those apps probably don't use the X cursor at all but draw it themselves
with OpenGL.

This sounds like a duplicate of bug #254257; if anything, it's a bug in
the X 2D drivers that they don't force hardware cursors on
direct-rendered windows.

Bug#256768: xfree86: ATI Radeon 9100 IGP support needs backporting

2004-06-28 Thread Jonathan Walther

Package: xfree86
Severity: wishlist

The ATI Radeon IGP 9100 chipset from Nvidea is supported by the version
of XFree86 4.3.99 that was available before the big license change. It
was in the radeon driver. Can it be backported?

This support is necessary for people who have Asus P4R800-VM
motherboards, the VESA driver doesn't work very nicely on these
motherboards.

Okay.

How about:
$ dpkg -P --force-depends xlibs
# dpkg -S etc/X11/xkb/xkbcomp

If that's not owned by any package, then either:

1) You have found a bug in dpkg;
2) You created it yourself;
3) Some very badly-behaved script created it.

I'm pretty sure I can rule out 3) for the xfree86 packages dating back
to the version released in potato or before.

There are known problems with dpkg's conffile handling. For example,
Scott James Remnant recently fixed one which had been around for a long
time indeed:

  dpkg (1.10.21) unstable; urgency=low

* Fix incorrect linked list node removal code that caused every second
shared or diverted conffile to be deleted by dpkg.
  Closes: #10879, #33046, #47267, #90623, #98210, #109691, #146167.
  Closes: #155456, #204275.

In any case, there is no obvious right thing to do if someone has stuck
a plain file where a package expects to place a conffile. Just
unconditionally deleting it is a good way to get angry bug reports.

In situations like this, the user is expected to inspect the situation
and make an informed decision. If your /etc/X11/xkb/xkbcomp looks
useless to you, delete it and try to install the package again.

If there is a bug here, I'm not sure it is one I can fix. You'll need
to tell me what you think the package is doing wrong.

mic@research.nj.nec.com mails TMDA challenges to senders of mailing list posts

2004-06-28 Thread Branden Robinson
Hi listadmins,

This person has grossly misconfigured his TMDA such that it sends
challenges to people who send messages to our mailing lists (this
doesn't really surprise me given the mentality of people who tend to use

Please unsubscribe this person from all of our lists until he or she

Incidents like this constitute still more evidence -- as if any were
needed -- that many of the early adopters of so-called spam control

If you have the time and patience, you might try selectively downgrading
your xserver-xfree86 to various previous versions, courtesy of
snapshot.debian.net:

http://snapshot.debian.net/

Just enter "xfree86" into the "package name:" field and click the
"details".

You will then be presented with a list of historical directories
corresponding to various package versions. You can download packages
from any of these.

Well, the latter is always a possibility when we don't truly understand
the problem, but it always possible to re-file the bug later should it
recur.

Mr. Bilderbeek, has this problem also been resolved for you? If so, I
will close these bugs.

Bug#225753: xserver-xfree86: [mga] text droppings with TrueType fonts on accelerated Matrox G450

As of xserver-xfree86 4.3.0.dfsg.1-4 (or possibly earlier), this bug no
longer manifests on my system.

I haven't tried turning hardware acceleration back on until now, so I
can't give a more accurate estimate of when the poor behaviour stopped.

I also don't really know if the bug is fixed or just in hiding.

You mean from a console? Does the $DISPLAY environment variable contain
the same thing in both cases?

apt-get source xserver-xfree86-dbg and make -f debian/rules patch-audit
from the directory that creates, but a backtrace from xserver-xfree86-
dbg might be useful even without the source.

Sources to go with xserver-xfree86-dbg

2004-06-28 Thread Igor Khavkine
Hi, I've got a strange problem with my X server. It is crashed by
starting certain applications, but not when they are started from a
separate terminal.

Before submitting a bug, I'd like to get more info on the crash. That's
why I installed xserver-xfree86-dbg. My question is about debugging with
the X server sources. What is the best way to install the sources to go
along with this -dbg package?

Thanks in advance.

Igor

P.S.: Please CC me since I'm not on the list.

Bug#169427: When the default mouse is gone, X should still work

2004-06-28 Thread Marques Johansson
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-5
Followup-For: Bug #169427

I stumbled upon this bug on my laptop which has a builtin ps/2 mouse. After
doing an upgrade /dev/psaux went away. This caused X not to load at the next
boot and for whatever reason gdm wouldn't pass control onto the next rc file.

X has the configuration allowing for a secondary mouse in /dev/input/mice. this
allows for (2.6) ps2 mice and usb mice to work well under a default X config.
However, the lack of the 'Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true"' causes X to not
load when it otherwise would have loaded happily.

What harm could be done in changing the default debian XF86Config-4 to include
this line? In a worst case, someone with an improper mouse configuration gets
keyboard-only access to X.
