Bug#268461: xfree86: FTBFS: wrong Build-Depends libstdc++-5-dev
[Steve Langasek dropped from CC.] On Sat, Oct 23, 2004 at 01:26:57PM +0200, Andreas Jochens wrote: Branden, first of all I would like to apologize for the duplicate bug report which I filed on this subject. Apology accepted. For xlibmesa-glu-dev's Depends: line to be accurate, don't I need to preferentially build-depend on the same C++ library? (xfree86 will no longer build-depend on a libstdc++-dev package as of the next package release.) Why does xlibmesa-glu-dev still preferentially depend on 'libstdc++5-dev'? 1) It links against libstdc++, so you need the -dev version of the package installed to link objects linked to libGLU at compile time. All (well, to my knowledge) -dev library packages follow this convention. 2) Pure virtual dependencies are bad. 3) I had to pick something, and to ease life for woody backporters I picked a package name that was still in existence on woody. If your environment requires a different libstdc++-dev package, make sure it's installed. I am certainly not entitled to give any advice on release issues, but I am quite sure that the C++ ABI from gcc-3.3 will be used for sarge. The archive is not (yet) clean with respect to gcc-3.4. More than 600 bug reports with patches have been filed to the BTS to resolve the FTBFS issues with gcc-3.4. About two thirds of those patches have already been accepted by the maintainers and uploaded to the archive. The number of packages which do not build with gcc-3.4 is decreasing every day but currently there are still more than 200 packages which FTBFS with gcc-3.4. Nevertheless, the Build-Depends (and also the Depends of xlibmesa-glu-dev) on the old libstdc++5-dev from gcc-3.2 is outdated and should be dropped in any case. I disagree. If you do not like to drop it for some reason, please consider to add '[!amd64]' to the (Build-)Depends on libstdc++5-dev because otherwise autobuilding of xfree86 fails since we do not have gcc-3.2 and libstdc++5-dev on amd64. The Build-Depends is gone and should rectify any problems in this area. A package providing libstdc++-dev is Build-Essential; any sane build environment is going to have one installed before trying to do work with xlibmesa-glu-dev. -- G. On Sat, Oct 09, 2004 at 01:26:34PM +0200, Toni Mueller wrote: Most programming languages require the use of braces, brackets, backslashes and the like which are very awkward to reach on a normal German keyboard layout. Likewise, and depending on the keyboard, Escape may be far off, Backspace and Delete switched, and you name it - there are other oddities on keyboards which make work cumbersome and straining. These I correct partially with my xmodmap as follows: - Select a base layout of en_US (pc105) - Make AltGR let me type in the German Umlauts with ease (and where they are prointed on the keycaps). - Swap Backspace and Delete - Swap 'Escape' and 'Menu' - Have the few more rarely used keys on AltGR + some other key (eg. AltGR + 'a' - å) I'm already looking into XKB, but haven't gotten very far. I think you're going to need to define your own custom keyboard layout to achieve all this. :( -- G. I only have xdm installed, and there really shouldn't be kdm, or gdm installed anywhere. In that case, your output should look just about identical to mine, above. I think that the script is trying to migrate /etc/X11/default-display-manager into deb_conf's database, but now it's /etc/X11/default-display-manager.dpkg-tmp (as part of the upgrade process no doubt) and it contains /usr/bin/X11/xdm-disabled and I want xdm not to start by default. Er, uh, what? I have no idea what xdm-disabled is and I'm pretty it has nothing to do with anything I've ever packaged. has changing the default-display-manager to a non-existant file confused the deb_conf upgrade process? Possibly. However, the system should be robust enough to cope with that, by complaining about the bogus value and simply not starting a display manager at all. -- G. close 276417 severity 276417 normal merge 276417 276234 thanks On Thu, Oct 14, 2004 at 02:16:32AM +0200, Michelle Konzack wrote: Hello Maintainer and Upstream, This is related to BUG #276234 Greetings Michelle ...and is being closed for the same reason. See URL: http://bugs.debian.org/276234 for more information. [The following is a form letter.] Hello, You recently filed a duplicate bug report against a Debian package; that is, the problem had already been reported. While there is often nothing inherently wrong with doing so, the filing of duplicate reports can cause Debian package maintainers to spend time performing triage and maintenance operations on bug reports (e.g., instructing the Debian Bug Tracking System to merge the duplicates) that could otherwise be spent resolving problems and doing other work on the package. One very good way to file bugs with the Debian Bug Tracking System is to use the reportbug package and command of the same name. A very nice feature of reportbug is that, if the machine where you run it has network access to the World Wide Web, it can query the Debian Bug Tracking System and show you existing reports. This reduces the chance that you'll file a duplicate report, and offers you the option of adding follow-up information to an existing bug report. This is especially valuable if you have unique information to add to an existing report, because this way information relevant to the problem is gathered together in one place as opposed to being scattered among multiple, duplicate bug reports where some facts may be overlooked by the package maintainers. The reportbug program also does a lot of automatic information-gathering that helps package maintainers to understand your system configuration, and also ensures that your message to the Debian Bug Tracking System is well-formed so that it is processed correctly by the automated tools that manage the reports. (If you've ever gotten a bounce message from the Debian Bug Tracking System that tells you your message couldn't be processed, you might appreciate this latter feature.) Therefore, I strongly urge you to give reportbug a try as your primary bug reporting tool for the Debian System. (If you already do use reportbug, please see below.) One way to install reportbug is with apt-get; for example: # apt-get install reportbug The reportbug command has a few different modes that cater to different levels of user expertise. If this message has contained a lot of jargon that is unfamiliar to you, you likely want to use reportbug's novice mode; here's one way to do that. $ reportbug --mode=novice Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem, or type 'other' to report a more general problem. If you're more sophisticated, or if you are not using the released version of Debian (stable), but instead Debian testing or unstable, you should use reportbug's standard mode. $ reportbug Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem, or type 'other' to report a more general problem. The reportbug command is extensively documented in its usage message and manual page. Commands to view these pieces of documentation are: $ reportbug --help | more $ man reportbug (The output of the above commands has been omitted from this message.) If you do use reportbug, but are so daunted by the large number of bugs already filed against a package that you feel you cannot search for a duplicate, please note that reportbug has a (f)ilter feature that enables you to use a keyword search to limit the number of bugs reported. (If you're feeling ambitious, the filter feature also accepts a regular expression.) For example, if you'd like to report a SEGV (segfault), you might filter based on the term SEGV. If you're having trouble upgrading a package, you might filter based on upgrad (to catch both upgrade and upgrading). Some package maintainers retitle bugs to contain keywords so as to facilitate better filtering and convey more useful information, since a bug report with a title of broken or the like is not very useful to anyone. We appreciate you taking the time to help package maintainers serve you better by reducing the amount of time they need to spend coping with duplicate bug reports. I believe that this change is a mistake, however, controlling this behavior via a setting in the /etc/X11/Xsession.options file is certainly accceptable to me. I'm not going to fix this for the reasons I outlined in a discussion[1] with Chris Waters back in July. Quoting: For the time being, I do not agree. Justification #1: Xsession is a conffile and anybody who's annoyed by this can apply your patch or a similar one themselves. Justification #2: I think programs and libraries -- especially GTK+ and Qt and their dependent hordes -- need to be broken of the philosophy that .xsession-errors is just another name for /dev/null. Anything that spews gouts of garbage to the file needs a bug filed against it, and I strongly encourage you to do so. severity 277094 normal reassign 277094 xlibs retitle 277094 xlibs: setxkbmap us_intl: Error loading new keyboard description merge 277094 274513 thanks On Mon, Oct 18, 2004 at 05:15:29PM +0200, Etienne Perron wrote: until recently, I was able to switch between a standard US and an international US keyboard layout in my XFree86. Since my last debian testing update, this is no longer the case. Install the package and tell debconf you want to use that X server. Then restart the X server and try to reproduce the bug (should be easy). If it doesn't crash, let us know. If it does crash, become root, enable core dumps (ulimit -c unlimited in bash), start the X server as root and reproduce the crash again: # startx $(which x-terminal-emulator) -- :1 (If no X server is running at DISPLAY=:0, you can leave off the -- :1 part). This will launch the X server running a lone terminal client with no window manager. Run the client that provokes the crash from the terminal prompt. If the X server crashes, it should leave a core dump in /etc/X11. We then run the GNU Debugger, GDB, on the core file and executable. We're interested in a backtrace of execution. The X server has a signal handler in it so it can do things like exit gracefully (restoring the text console, and so forth), so we're not actually interested in all the stack frames -- just those above the signal handler. Here's an example GDB session I logged after provoking an artificial server crash (with kill -SEGV). % gdb $(which XFree86-debug) core GNU gdb 6.1-debian Copyright 2004 Free Software Foundation, Inc. severity 277884 important merge 277699 277884 thanks On Sat, Oct 23, 2004 at 02:29:28AM -0300, Peter Cordes wrote: background: AMD64 NX support works in 32bit and 64bit mode. It adds an exec permission bit to PAE page tables, so PROT_READ is separate from PROT_EXEC. Since it only works with 3rd level page tables, not plain x86 ones, it only works with highmem64GB kernels (in which case it's on by default). see http://lists.debian.org/debian-amd64/2004/09/msg00393.html http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/3240/9418 Summary: noexec means memory pages have to be mapped with PROT_EXEC if you want to run code in them. Stack and heap are non-executable by default. Apparently ELF executables can specify executability of things... The bug is that X segfaults on noexec kernels, but not when I boot with noexec=off. This happens with the radeon driver, and with the ati driver (on a dual Opteron Tyan board with built-in mach64 video.) Please make the i386 xserver-xfree86 package work on NX systems. (The kernels that Debian ships aren't compiled with highmem64, so this will only affect people who recompile their kernels, not everyone who installs Sarge on an AMD64. In that case this bug would be important.) Is there a reason you didn't submit this information as follow-up to #277699? -- G. No worries if you don't want to support this configuration. This is not something I think I *can* fix. I don't think xutils Replaces: xbase-clients (= 4.3.0.dfsg.1-7) is something that makes sense to add to woody, nor do I think Martin Schulze would accept such a change. If there is a fix for this, it lies in dpkg. Every time even one package is upgraded, dpkg would have to rescan the Replaces: headers of all already-installed packages to see if this error would be suppressed by one of them. It could do this on a per-run basis, I suppose, so it would only be inefficient if you used dpkg a lot to upgrade only one package at a time. Do you agree? -- G. CONCLUSION The update of nv drivers of xserver-xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1-8, are buggy! I'm sorry to tell you this, but that delta (4.1.0-16woody4 to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8) is so huge as to be useless for determining what precisely may have caused the regression. I'd like to request a couple more pieces of information: 1) Does turning XAA acceleration off prevent the problem from recurring? (Search for NoAccel in the XF86Config-4(5x) manual page.) NoAccel is in the nv manual, I use the default installed config file, with no options on that device. Are there any other bugreport that suspect exclusion of this option cause problem? (is it an option or not?) 2) Can you try various earlier versions in the 4.3.0.dfsg.1 release series to see if any of them rectify the problem? You can find these at snapshot.debian.net. Please start with the most recent prior to yours (-7) and work your way backwards. I often update my system, so.. the problem is in the latest version (4.3.0.dfsg.1-8). A little more description of the problem: If X didn't froze at first apps, it did froze within an hour, a stress test with an open aterm and just scroll dselect could cause it, also to froze. The problem have not reapeard since: I copied one single file nv_drv.o from the woody-relise (xserver-xfree86_4.1.0-16woody4_i386.deb), too the same path as the latest debian-sarge xserver-xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 (that I still have installed). Bug#278269: xfree 4.3.1 refuses to use 1280x1024 on external TFT with i810
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 Hi, i recently did an dist-upgrade on my sarge system and got my X-Server upgraded from 4.2.1 to 4.3.0.1.
