When compile a program, I encountered the error:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXxf86vm

Although I have the libxxf86vm1 package installed, the linker was not
picking up the library. I looked in /usr/X11R6/lib, and there was no
symlink from libXxf86vm.so to the libXxf86vm.so.1 library file. Once I
created this link, my program linked correctly.

Links of this type seem to be missing for other libXx* libraries.

This installation is rather fresh (about a week). I installed sarge,
and then dist-upgraded to testing.

Ok, it's all yours. I already updated it for 6.9 after I wrote this, so
what we've currently got is Ok. I'm pretty well done adding interesting
changes to 6.9 for now myself but if you want to update it that's fine. If
you want to take responsibility for this driver in 7.0 too please do!

I also removed gdm and replaced it with kdm,
and I get lines in my .bashrc
appearing as little error pop-ups during desktop initialization
and in the .xsession-errors file (excerpt follows).
I had added these lines to /etc/kde3/kdm/Xsession to get
more debugging messages:

2006-01-10 Thread Greg Kochanski

Around 36 lines into 20x11-common_process-args, the following code
is missing some quotes around the $1:
STARTUP_FULL_PATH=$(which $1 || true)

If $1 should contain a space, then all heck would break loose.

Hello.

I think that I will take this baby with me.

Well, it was in the same state in the past. I was certainly related to
Wacom's a couple of years ago and I investigated a bit the driver status. In
fact, I started to look how to integrate XFree86 SDK in the archive, as the
wacom driver will benefit from having up-to-date headers and the like. But I
never took this really seriously. I can try the "hack" that I thought of,
simply copying periodically several headers in the package. If I would use
XSF SVN as repository, an external relationship for the required files will
be wonderful, I think, as the upgrade would be automatic.

As I said, I will try to get something in a reasonable state next week,
but I
cannot promise anything. Given the level of enthusiasm, I do not think that
anyone has much interest in it, but anyway, if you are going to touch it,
please send me a note before.

Best regards,

Bug#338290: Can't start X twice on GNU/kFreeBSD

2006-01-10 Thread Siward de Groot
For your information :

sarge::Info::libc::sockets::localnamespace::details  has :

w

   You should compute the LENGTH parameter for a socket address in the
local namespace as the sum of the size of the `sun_family' component
and the string length (_not_ the allocation size!) of the file name
string. This can be done using the macro `SUN_LEN':

 -- Macro: int SUN_LEN (_struct sockaddr_un *_ PTR)
 The macro computes the length of socket address in the local
 namespace.
w

I have no idea why this is.

  have fun !

Bug#175911: problem persists (or reappeared)

2006-01-10 Thread Carsten Pfeiffer
With current Xorg 6.9 I'm experiencing similar problems. Xorg.0.log says

(**) (MGA(0): *Default mode "1280x1024": 108.0 MHz, 64 kHz, 60.0. Hz
(II) MGA80): Modeline "1280x1024" 108.00 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1024 1028
1066 +hsync +vsync

but my TFT receives 31,3 kHz and 29,3 Hz.

Maybe I'm only experiencing this now, because the binary-only driver from
Matrox is not available for Xorg 6.9, so the plain Xorg driver is used.

This happens with both DVI and analog connection.

Thanks,
Carsten

My suggestion was that sysadmins do the work if they want to,
but your proposal is much better. If there is no objection,

Yes. It would be nice to provide /etc/X11/Compose file and to set the

Bug#338290: Can't start X twice on GNU/kFreeBSD

2006-01-10 Thread Petr Salinger
Hi David.

> Have you seen the annotation that Aurelien did on Jan 2nd
> in the upstream bug report?:

Yes, it is another approach to fix it.
In fact, this coding style is already used i.e. in
extras/Mesa/src/glx/mini/miniglx_events.c

GNU/kFreeBSD has problem with
namelen = strlen(sockname.sun_path) + sizeof(sockname.sun_family);

It will work with either
namelen = strlen(sockname.sun_path) + offsetof(struct sockaddr_un,
sun_path);
or
namelen = sizeof(struct sockaddr_un);

The first fix is closer to previous code, both are correct.

> Anyway, I am applying your patch, as it is correct for you.

Thanks

Hello, Petr. Have you seen the annotation that Aurelien did on Jan 2nd
in the
upstream bug report?:

==
Actually according to POSIX1.2004, you don't even't need to use strlen and
offsetof, you can use sizeof(struct sockaddr_un) instead. Tested with a
FreeBSD kernel and a Linux kernel.

POSIX1.2004, page 263 says:
"address_len Specifies the length of the sockaddr structure pointed to by
the address argument."
==

Anyway, I am applying your patch, as it is correct for you, until you
have
some time to review the changes Aurelien proposes.

according to

the kernels later than 2.6.3 do not need sisfb

(but, I will try again, just to be absolutely sure)

anyway: I was using testing and Xorg 6.8.2 up to some days ago : all
GL applications would said that DRI was OK, but the window was
completely black (no display at all). This is why I tried to upgrade
to unstable.

If you use testing on your laptop, does DRI work for you ?
which kernel do you use?

a.

Please update xorg-x11 Polish translation.

2006-01-10 Thread David Martínez Moreno
Hello. As a member of X Strike Force, I would like to ask you to update
the
xorg-x11 debconf translation file, that is severely outdated.

I am contacting this list because there is no information in the file
about
the last translator or the language list.

Your translation is not completely updated, thus confusing users that
install
 this package. The output message of untranslated and fuzzy strings is:

pl.po: 9 translated messages, 6 fuzzy translations, 145 untranslated messages.

You can find the up-to-date .po in

http://necrotic.deadbeast.net/svn/xorg-x11/trunk/debian/po/

After finishing, follow the usual way: file up a bug in the BTS with
"l10n" and "patch" tags, package xorg-x11.

If you have any issue, please report to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Best regards,

Ender.

Hello, A. I have the same chipset in one of my laptops. Please wait
until I
upgrade to 6.9 for testing. :-) At first glance I suggest activating kernel
framebuffer for SiS, if you had not got it enabled.

The problem with this is we need to determine which of these packages
specifically need Xaw8 and for which Xaw7 is fine. Basically, for those
apps which need to print using Xprint because don't have their own engine
to do so, they'll require Xaw8. I'm not willing to remove Xaw8 until I know
that these issues are resolved.

I note that the following packages depend on libxaw8:

  xterm
  xsysinfo
  xshogi
  xruskb
  xdmx
  xdm
  xconq
  xbill
  xbase-clients
  timidity
  tetex-bin
  ppxp-x11
  playmidi
  kinput2-wnn
  kinput2-canna-wnn
  kinput2-canna
  italc-master
  italc-client
  gxine
  eli-xtools
  crossfire-edit

(Not including its own -dev and -dbg packages, and aewm which is mine (I
am rebuilding it presently)).

Should we file bugs, or send out a dd-list mail, or just wait for xaw8
to disappear?

Not a problem. I thought this was the direction we were going, and it
was the older versions that would eventually be removed (as with most

I was running the xorg-server from experimental that was version
6.8.99.900 that had the patch for middle button scroll and paste
functionality for the Thinkpad. However, my recent apt-get upgrade for
Sid installed version 6.9.0. Which doesn't seem to have the
scroll/paste patch (or at least it no longer works since the upgrade).

Did the experimental package not trickle down into unstable with the
patch intact?

This is the patch in question:

It's a simple change (I was uncertain if I should leave it commented out,
but I've seen regular complaints about not being able to select URLs).

The charClass resource at the end of /etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm is the
change, and can be overridden or removed.

Oh well, not a great problem. It is in or with other 6 an 7 -dev. I would leave
it as is...

Hello, Decklin and Francesco. I have noticed your changelog about this
bug
during a routine upgrade in my system. I send this mail as a member of the X
Strike Force.

Please, Decklin, could you point what do you find in libxaw8 that you
have
not got in libxaw7? As far as I can tell, libxaw8 differs from libxaw7 in the
print code, which is actually disabled.

X Strike Force' plans are, among others, drop libxaw8 packages in X.Org
7.0,
due in a month or so. I reopened the bug as we do not want to advance in the
opposite direction, so Paolo should drop again libxaw8 from Build-Depends.

Best regards,

Ender.

the version numbers in /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg/NEWS.Debian.gz for the

A full build log can be found at:

manifest checks still fail for mips and mipsel. This causes xbase-clients to be
uninstallable, so is holding up the KDE 3.5 transition, as kdelibs depends
on xbase-clients...

Moi!

libXt from 6.9.0.dfsg.1-2 was linked with libX11, but this dependency is
not reflected in the Depends: of the binary package:

% ldd /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6
linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xe000)
libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0xb7ece000)
libSM.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6 (0xb7ec6000)
libICE.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6 (0xb7eaf000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0xb7d78000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/tls/libdl.so.2 (0xb7d74000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x8000)

but:

% dpkg -s libxt6 | grep Depends
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.5-1), libice6, libsm6, debconf (>= 0.5) | debconf-2.0

The required dependency on libx11-6 is missing.

(libxt-dev correctly depends on libx11-dev, but this bug can still lead to
build failures when dependencies in -dev packages are no longer recursively
expanded. Eg. build-depend on libaudio-dev, and linking with -laudio will
fail due to this problem.)

Regards,

Daniel.

The new evdev driver doesn't work for mice on powerpc (same config
works on x86). I've tried to use the following section:

,
| Section "InputDevice"
| Identifier  "MX1000"
| Driver  "evdev"
| Option  "CorePointer"
| Option  "Protocol"  "evdev"
| Option  "Device""/dev/input/mx1000"
| Option  "Emulate3Buttons"   "false"
| EndSection
`

where /dev/input/mx1000 is a event device renamed by this udev rule:

,
| ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="input", SYSFS{manufacturer}=="Logitech",
SYSFS{product}=="USB Receiver", NAME="input/mx1000"
`

As said, this works fine on x86 but on powerpc X dies with:

,
| (**) Option "CorePointer"
| (**) MX1000: Core Pointer
| (**) MX1000: Device: "/dev/input/mx1000"
| (WW) MX1000: Don't know how to use device
| (EE) PreInit failed for input device "MX1000"
| (II) UnloadModule: "evdev"
| (WW) No core pointer registered
`

6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 worked fine with the old evdev driver and the
configuration described at
http://blog.blackdown.de/2005/04/03/logitech-mx1000-configuration/

Hello,

I just noticed that Xorg uses ACPI's /proc/acpi/event. Now, when acpid
is running Xorg is smart enough to read from its socket instead, and
when you, brave user, stop acpid: kaboom!
Xorg uses all my CPU leaving no option than restarting it.

Disabling PM management (Option "NoPM") obviously helps and also fixes
xorg stealing /proc/acpi/event.

BTW: I'm stripping some of the package info below as they're not much of

The priority of mouse template (medium) is too low, and unsuitable for use
with a LiveCD: Since the /etc/init.d/xserver-xorg script intended for LiveCD
usage uses "-phigh" when configuring this package, mice won't be configured
unless they can be configured automaticaly via mdetect, which:

  a) doesn't always work
  b) doesn't work on all platforms (currently not available for GNU/kFreeBSD)

Please find attached patch to rise priority to high.

Hello,

on xserver start I get the following warning:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but has 2 symbols
>   Ignoring extra symbols
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

This happens since a few package versions (I don't know exactly since
when anymore :/ but I know it started with some upgrade).

My (only) keyboard definition as logged in XFree86.0.log:
(**) |-->Input Device "Generic Keyboard"
(**) Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
(**) XKB: rules: "xfree86"
(**) Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
(**) XKB: model: "pc105"
(**) Option "XkbLayout" "de"
(**) XKB: layout: "de"
(**) Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
(**) XKB: variant: "nodeadkeys"
(==) Keyboard: CustomKeycode disabled

I don't know exactly where to submit this bug to, but I've chosen
xlibs since xlibs seems to own all the /etc/X11/xkb definitions.

Thanks for your work & regards
   Mario

Bug#331517: one more fix for xorg 6.9 on GNU/kFreeBSD

2006-01-10 Thread Petr Salinger
Hi,

in last mail I forgot about changes in
debian/xserver-xorg.install.kfreebsd-i386, patch is included.

Moreover, the file debian/xdmx.install.kfreebsd-i386 can be dropped,
because its content is the same as in generic debian/xdmx.install.

Regards

Petr

Well, I tend to agree, but...
Currently, if I'm not mistaken, it won't be possible to put in *.dir
files anything outside XLOCALEDIR (/usr/share/X11/locale) without
additional patching of sources. That makes them quite useless in
/etc. I'm going to look into this more this weekend.

Bug#347415: scrolled-off text included in selection

2006-01-10 Thread Wichert Akkerman
Package: xterm
Severity: normal

This happens with the current unstable version.

When selecting the top visible line in xterm it can include text from
the (scrolled off) line above it. This does not always happen; I think
a critical factor is a missing word boundary between the two lines.

Wichert.

Bug#347384: xterm: Colon (:) isn't handled as seperator of words with mouse-doubleclick anymore

2006-01-10 Thread Philipp Kolmann
Package: xterm
Version: 208-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

xterm used to interpret a colon in a word or end of word as next word when
double-clicking on a word to select it.

With the new version now in unstable the colon isn't treated as seperator
anymore and is now marked as well.

Could you please restore the old behavior if it is possible.

thanks
Philipp Kolmann

Thank you, Sven. The change will be in the next X.Org release.

Best regards,

Ender.
