Re: Bug#345497: MGAGetBOARDHANDLESize problems with X.Org 6.9.0 and mga (G400)
Hi, I think I've run into the same problem on current Debian testing and a G550. I've managed to solve it by fiddling with the Matrox driver sources a bit and then compiling them myself. I've put some info online at http://wudika.de/~jan/mga/ Hope that helps someone. Bug#363559: xserver-xorg-video-ati: system freezes on Thinkpad T42
Ah, great. I was wondering how something like this could slip through the cracks. Still, at some point maybe we should back up the ATI driver to the older version, if that is even possible? Or, maybe there is a manual workaround that is not much trouble? Backing up via snapshot.debian.net is a real chore in this case. -Lex -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#363680: xserver-xorg-core: default nice value makes xorg behave nasty.
Package: xserver-xorg-core Version: 1:1.0.2-4 Severity: normal since i've upgraded my sid to xorg (not the transition to 7.0, the first move yet) my system was slow, xmms would stop while changing virtual desktops, firefox rendering pages with shades (bb4.org/hobbitmon.sf.net) would make the system allmost unusable. playing arround with the nice values of the browser, xmms (putting the browser to 15, xmms to -12) wouldn't do any better. _but_ changing the xserver from the package default of -10 to -1 would make the system run smooth with firefox and xmms running on 0 nice. As most of the kernel processes run with nice -5 i doubt that it makes sense to sugest users to give their x-server a higher prio than that. the default for that should be in the range of -1 through -4, -10 is counter productive, not to say evil, because of it renders the system disresponsive. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages xserver-xorg-core depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6-7GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libfontenc1 1:1.0.1-3 X11 font encoding library ii libgcc1 1:4.1.0-1 GCC support library ii libxau6 1:1.0.0-2 X11 authorisation library ii libxdmcp6 1:1.0.0-3 X11 Display Manager Control Protoc ii libxfont1 1:1.0.0-3 X11 font rasterisation library ii x11-common1:7.0.12 X Window System (X.Org) infrastruc ii xserver-xorg-input-al 1:7.0.12 the X.Org X server -- input driver ii xserver-xorg-input-ev 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- evdev input driv ii xserver-xorg-input-kb 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- keyboard input d ii xserver-xorg-input-mo 1:1.0.4-2 X.Org X server -- mouse input driv ii xserver-xorg-video-al 1:7.0.12 the X.Org X server -- output drive ii xserver-xorg-video-ap 1:1.0.1.5-2X.Org X server -- APM display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ar 1:0.5.0.5-2X.Org X server -- ark display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-at 1:6.5.7.3-3X.Org X server -- ATI display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ch 1:1.0.1.3-3X.Org X server -- Chips display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-ci 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Cirrus display d ii xserver-xorg-video-cy 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Cyrix display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-du 1:0.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- dummy display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-fb 1:0.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- fbdev display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-gl 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- Glint display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-i1 1:1.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- i128 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i7 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- i740 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i8 1:1.5.1.0-2X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx ii xserver-xorg-video-im 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- IMSTT display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-mg 1:1.2.1.3.dfsg.1-2 X.Org X server -- MGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ne 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Neomagic display ii xserver-xorg-video-ne 1:0.1.4.1-3X.Org X server -- Newport display ii xserver-xorg-video-ns 1:2.7.6.5-2X.Org X server -- NSC display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:1.0.1.5-2X.Org X server -- NV display drive ii xserver-xorg-video-re 1:4.0.1.3.dfsg.1-2 X.Org X server -- Rendition displa ii xserver-xorg-video-s3 1:1.8.6.5-2X.Org X server -- S3 ViRGE display ii xserver-xorg-video-sa 1:2.0.2.3-4X.Org X server -- Savage display d ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:1.3.1.5-3X.Org X server -- SiliconMotion di ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:0.8.1.3-2X.Org X server -- SiS display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:0.7.1.3-2X.Org X server -- SiS USB display ii xserver-xorg-video-td 1:1.1.1.3-3X.Org X server -- tdfx display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-tg 1:1.0.0.5-3X.Org X server -- TGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-tr 1:1.0.1.2-2X.Org X server -- Trident display ii xserver-xorg-video-ts 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Tseng display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-ve 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- VESA display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-vg 1:4.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- VGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-vi 1:0.1.33.2-2 X.Org X server -- VIA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-vm 1:10.11.1.3-2 X.Org X server -- VMware display d ii xserver-xorg-video-vo 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Voodoo display d ii zlib1g1:1.2.3-11 compression library - runtime Versions of packages xserver-xorg-core recommends: pn xkeyboard-config none (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To

Catched up with xorg package(s) debconf translations
Hello, Today, I think that I've completed catching up with translations of debconf templates for the xorg package. Indeed, there were several pending translations in the 6.9 branch in the SVN, which was the one we were formerly pointing to in Debian installer level 5 translations. Since the 7.0 release, translations which were quite often older came in, which could appear as a regression (see #363051). So, I took care of merging the translations from the 6.9 branch with those of the trunk, giving priority to translations from the 6.9 branch. Then I merged all these with the current POT file Then I re-added all pending and not-yet-commited translations from the xorg-x11 source package, merged them with the current templates Finally, I grabbed all recent updates sent for xorg and commited them. As a consequence, I think that the current debian/po directory in svn://necrotic.deadbeast.net/sxorg-x11/trunk/debian/xorg/debian/po is as up-to-date as possible, with all l10n bugs for debconf translations being processed. For translators, please wait for Dennis Stampfer to point the D-I status page to the right URL before doing new updates. For XSF people, I have subscribed to the PTS for xorg and will take care of commiting translation updates (unless someone screams out loud). I will also soon come with a proposal to rewrite the templates and make them more consistent with the recommended writing style in the Developers Reference. Thanks to all people who helped me doing this, especially those who cared about my lost commit access (which finally turned to be a weird reverse DNS problem for which Branden added an exception on his server). -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#363559: xserver-xorg-video-ati: system freezes on Thinkpad T42
Hi, On Thu, 2006-04-20 at 10:07 +0200, Lex Spoon wrote: Ah, great. I was wondering how something like this could slip through the cracks. Still, at some point maybe we should back up the ATI driver to the older version, if that is even possible? Or, maybe there is a manual workaround that is not much trouble? Backing up via snapshot.debian.net is a real chore in this case. -Lex Last night something went terribly wrong and I was forced to upgrade to X7.0 (X 6.8 stopped working for some reason). As the vesa driver is horribly slow, I decided to go with closed-source stuff until the radeon driver gets fixed. You can get it here: http://www.stanchina.net/~flavio/debian-official/fglrx-driver.html I'm sure it'll make it to sid pretty soon, but in case you don't want to wait Cheers, Carlos signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#362885: x11-common: unable to upgrade, rmdir: /usr/X11R6/bin: Directory not empty
#include hallo.h * Steve Langasek [Tue, Apr 18 2006, 01:41:08PM]: On Tue, Apr 18, 2006 at 12:14:25PM +0200, Eduard Bloch wrote: If you move the files, dpkg may be unable to find them at package uninstallation, resulting in orphaned files on the filesystem; or there may Not 100% correct. The problem of deinstallation is covered with the symlink workaround since dpkg AFAICS follows the symlinks in the path when removing a file. Hmm, you're assuming that we don't, at some later date (post-etch), drop the /usr/X11R6/bin compat symlink. If one of these packages is removed *after* that point, dpkg has no way to locate the binaries in order to remove them. I do, because otherwise we would need to make sure that /etc/profile the user machines has the new directory in $PATH, which is not the case (for non-root users) yet. But forcing the transition is better than keeping it forever. Forcing the user to deal with the conflict is the only safe way of handling files left in /usr/X11R6/bin. It should probably be turned into a debconf note later on, but for the time being I think the current behavior is as good as it's going to get. safe does not mean reliable or usefriendly. As I'm using the word safe, I do mean that it's reliable -- you reliably get one of two results, a successful upgrade or a message telling you that you need to reconcile by hand. When it comes to the reliability of the upgrade process, I would distuingish between the terms. Personally, one of the thing I hate are failures in the middle of process which can have been avoided. I still think that the current lone rmdir hidden in the postinst is not sufficient. What we need is IMO a list of dirty files - files that have existed in Debian in X11R6/bin directory before and which would certainly be uninstalled by apt/dpkg during the upgrade. The debconf's config script should be executed during dpkg-preconfigure (NOTE: not in the middle of upgrade!), scan the existing /usr/X11R6/bin directory, substract the set of dirty files and if there are still remaining files in the list, then the user should be given a chance to abort the whole installation before it starts. And a list of remaining files should be printed. Maybe together with 3rd-party packages that those files may belong to. If you wish me to implement a such solution, please say do it and I will try to. If you do compile a list of files that you believe came from packages, what do you do with them if you find them still there when it's time to turn /usr/X11R6/bin into a symlink? Then, and only then it should be allowed to stop/break, because the user must have done nasty things in time between the moments of the check/warning and the removal should take place (or an upgrade of his 3rd party packages, though unlikely). I don't disagree with the current solution anymore. I just would like to add pre-upgrade checkwarning. Eduard. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? OK, the log files are long gone, but I do have the previous xorg.conf backed up. The only differences in the new config file that I'm seeing are 1) a lack of GLcore in the modules section, and 2) the new section pertaining to the Synaptics Touchpad which has been giving me fits as well(see bug #363363). No, this shows *startx* being passed -dpi 100, not the X server. Try startx -- -dpi 100 OK, now that I have the syntax correct, I can startx properly with 100 dpi. I might be mistaken, but as I see it the server require exactly the video drivers for the cards configured in the xorg.conf file. If you have a ATI card, installing xserver-xorg-video-nv will fulfill the xserver-xorg-core dependency but will do no good for the server. Similarly installing xserver-xorg-input-synaptics will fulfill the dependency but will do nothing if you d not have a synaptics device. So this is a case where a dependency cannot be expressed by the system. In that case, we usually make them recommends and document them in the packages description. Secondly, since xserver-xorg is more or less mandatory and already depends on xserver-xorg-video-all | xserver-xorg-video, xserver-xorg-input-all | xserver-xorg-input, I think xserver-xorg-core can get away with this dependency. Thirdly, I don't think users can reasonnably expect the drivers packages to depend on the server. They should only expect the dependencies to avoid an incompatible set of servers and drivers to be installable and cause crashes. Cheers, -- Bill. [EMAIL PROTECTED] Imagine a large red swirl here.

Bug#363359: xserver-xorg: Resolution has changed from 100 dpi, to 75 dpi
(I don't have anything to do with the Debian X packages, I am just a long-time Debian user who happens to follow the debian-x mailing list which receives these bug reports.) Rob Bochan [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: However, why am I having to add the dpi switch to the startx command now, after all this time (2+ years) running Sid on the machine without having to do so before? It has _always_ defaulted to 100 dpi previously, even when XFree86 was still in the rotation. If I remember correctly (I hope I do, but I'm not quite sure), the file /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc, which startx uses, contained the following command in woody and sarge: exec /usr/bin/X11/X -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp Perhaps this has changed in Xorg 7.x? I remember previously having to remove the -dpi 100 manually, because I wanted to specify the actual resolution in the configuration file. I never understood why the Debian default setting was to override anything specified in the server configuration file, so if this default command-line argument was removed in Xorg 7, I'm personally quite happy with the change. However, perhaps it should be documented, e.g., in the NEWS file? (I don't know if it already is, I haven't looked at the 7.x packages yet.) Another possibility would be to ask for the resolution when the X packages are configured, and write this out to the auto-generated X server configuration file. I think the proper place to configure the resolution should be the server configuration file, since that contains all the other information about the monitor (such as the supported frequencies, if they are not autodetected), and since (I think) the server command-line arguments need to be specified in multiple files (at least previously, xserverrc applied only to startx and, for example, xdm had its own configuration file where the server command-line options could be specified - I don't know if this has changed recently). -- -=- Rjs -=- [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#363995: xserver-xorg-video-ati: OpenGL view out of alignment with window
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati Version: 1:6.5.7.3-3 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** Since upgrading to 7.0 I've noticed a problem with the contents of any GL viewport shifting roughly half the viewport width to the left. This seems to occur when some other window partially overlaps and obscurs the GL window. For example, starting glxgears, produces the familiar rotating cogs, however if the mouse is hovered over one of the title bars windows until a tooltip appears, the gears suddenly shift to the left, such that only the green gear is visible. It looks like xft is still affected, but I have no idea why you're filing the bug against the other packages. The xorg-x11 package is obsolete, besides which it's also a source package that previously built some 150 binary packages and you gave no indication of which one you thought was buggy. (If the bug applies to a particular binary package, please file it against that binary package!) The final two packages are driver packages that have nothing to do with shared libraries, so definitely shouldn't be calling ldconfig either. In the future, please file separate bugs when you find that multiple packages suffer from the same problem; when each package has to be fixed separately, it's not very helpful to have a single bug report with a single open/closed state... -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Development branches of Mesa routinely break the odd targets (glide, directfb, whatever else ...). Continously adding and removing packages from the archive is not really something we want to set as a precedent. I can imagine a Mesa package in experimental that ships a bunch of targets and manages the whole thing with symlinks, e.g. /usr/lib/mesa/glide/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/mesa/directfb/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/mesa/dri/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/mesa/swrast/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 - mesa/glide/libGL.so.1 I actually have code lying around that does something like this. Needless to say, the package is big. The idea of packaging this would be allowing people to test the development branch in order to find and report problems. It would carry a big friendly THIS WILL BREAK warning. Marcelo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm not entirely certain what it's for, I presume it's for grabbing a snapshot of the current GL image in a window, for sending to a printer. It uses the software rasterizer to render widgets with associated OpenGL contexts. It basically compiles the entire rasterizer into the Xprint server. It doesn't actually grab a snapshot of the current image, it renders it from scratch. Marcelo -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
