Bug#368655: libx11-data: incorrect locale alias for russian

2006-05-24 Thread Andrei Lahun
Package: libx11-data
Version: 2:1.0.0-6
Severity: normal
Tags: l10n

Since upgrade to xorg 7.0 i experienced strange problems
with xterm Eterm rxvt - when i try to type in cyrrilic
i saw that wrong characters are shown. But i did not
see such problems with gnome-terminal. I found
that in /usr/share/X11/locale/locale.alias russian
is alias for iso8859-5 but it should be ru_RU.koi8-r.

Bug#359328: Fixed in mesa upstream

2006-05-24 Thread Marcelo E. Magallon
On Wed, May 24, 2006 at 02:02:22PM +0100, Andy Parkins wrote:

As it turns out this problem is caused by the snapshot builds using
outdated Xorg 6.9 sources that are incompatible with the current i915
driver from Mesa. i915 snapshots 20060123 and older should still be
  OK.

So I guess the problem will go away with the next update of mesa.

Are we using an snapshot? I thought the problem was caused by us
patching a 7.0 Xserver with newer sources. We need a newer Mesa. My
problem with that solution is what happens with drivers which are
 currently working? Do they break?

The 6.5 build I've playing with locally does in fact work with the
current server in unstable, but the 6.4.2 build doesn't (i915).

Bug#347308: xterm: problem does not exist in sarge

2006-05-24 Thread Henning Glawe
Package: xterm
Version: 210-3
Followup-For: Bug #347308

I am observing the same problem, using ion2 as a window manager. As I am
working both under sarge and sid, I observed that this problem does not
show up in sarge's xterm version.

A second observation I made is that in sid that the misdetection of size
occurs with greater probability when the system load is higher.

ati drivers

2006-05-24 Thread Greg Stark

Given that the 7.0 ATI drivers are so completely borked and lots of people
have reported compiling the driver from the CVS source, surely some people
have built actual debian packages of the ATI driver from CVS source? Is such a
beast available somewhere?

Alternatively, what exactly is the procedure to built just this driver from
CVS source? Did you just check out the ATI driver source from x.org and drop
in the debian directory directly?

Bug#368796: xserver-xorg: OpenGL fails completely on AMD64 with ATI Radeon 8500 LE

Nope, I fully expect xrestop to crash when the X server disappears.
The thing would be to look for any growth in memory usage *while*
sylpheed is beginning to become sluggish.

..ok, about 50% up to 140kB.

Neither xrestop nor sylpheed-gtk1 reports its pid to it, and
I get at least 6 unknown's showing up.

..sylpheed-gtk1 running locally is waay more sluggish
than 140kB warrants. Running remotely, it's quick 'n snappy.

Well, if xrestop doesn't show any unusual memory usage, how about just
 'top'?

..aye, did that too, and it showed xrestop loading up. Running
sylpheed-gtk1 remotely, I see no problems and even up 18fps in
a Flightgear session at 1600x1200x24bpp on a 2048x1536x24bpp
KDE-3.5.2-2 on this 7yr old amd k6-2 450MHz rig, ok 1.5 yr old
ATI 9250 clone, RV280|5960 chip, on a X-7.0.0 radeon driver.

Anyway, 140KB is definitely not going to be a reason for the X server
to crash, so let's reassign this to the xserver now.

..whatever does the job. :o)

..could it be a font thing? These crashes started after the font I had
set up for Sylpheed-gtk1, disappeared off this box, everything else
works like it should, AFAICT.

Nope, I fully expect xrestop to crash when the X server disappears.
The thing would be to look for any growth in memory usage *while*
sylpheed is beginning to become sluggish.

..ok, about 50% up to 140kB.

Neither xrestop nor sylpheed-gtk1 reports its pid to it, and

..sylpheed-gtk1 running locally is waay more sluggish
than 140kB warrants. Running remotely, it's quick 'n snappy.

Well, if xrestop doesn't show any unusual memory usage, how about
  just 'top'?

..aye, did that too, and it showed xrestop loading up. Running
sylpheed-gtk1 remotely, I see no problems and even up 18fps in
 a Flightgear session at 1600x1200x24bpp on a 2048x1536x24bpp
KDE-3.5.2-2 on this 7yr old amd k6-2 450MHz rig, ok 1.5 yr old
ATI 9250 clone, RV280|5960 chip, on a X-7.0.0 radeon driver.

..and remembering I had left in running, I now see 12.6% memory
usage by Sylpheed-gtk1, thats off 384MB ram and 1.5GB swap:
-rw-r--r-- 1 arnt arnt 31168 May 25 03:54 /tmp/top.on.ssh

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ $ qalc .126*384
0.126 * 384 = 48.384 #assuming no swap use.
And there is still plenty omph left in this dinosaur, even
when running FlightGear, it _is_ a resource hog. ;o)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ $ ll /tmp/w.free md5sum /tmp/w.free

Anyway, 140KB is definitely not going to be a reason for the X
server to crash, so let's reassign this to the xserver now.

 ..whatever does the job. :o)

..could it be a font thing? These crashes started after the font I
had set up for Sylpheed-gtk1, disappeared off this box, everything
else works like it should, AFAICT.

Bug#359328: Fixed in mesa upstream

2006-05-24 Thread Andy Parkins
I found this bug report

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5792

Which says

As it turns out this problem is caused by the snapshot builds using outdated
Xorg 6.9 sources that are incompatible with the current i915 driver from Mesa.
i915 snapshots 20060123 and older should still be OK.

So I guess the problem will go away with the next update of mesa.

Well, the x11-common side of this has now been fixed, which just leaves
 ivtools-dev now uninstallable. Cloning reassigning.

I think this problem, along with some other RC bugs, is fixed by
Christoph Berg NMU for ivtools, waiting in NEW queue for 3 weeks.

See last message in http://bugs.debian.org/346695 for NMU notification.

Bug#368818: x11-common: insufficient error checking in Xsession can prevent users from logging in

2006-05-24 Thread Itai Seggev
Package: x11-common
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6
Severity: normal

If fold is given zero columns as an argument, it dies with the error
message below. If the $COLUMNS enivornment variable is for some reason
set to zero, then the command fold -s -w ${COLUMNS:-80} in
Xsessions's message functions will cause xinit to die with only the
following output in .xsession-errors:

Xsession: X session started for iseggev at Wed May 24 23:51:20 CDT 2006
fold: invalid number of columns: `0'

The result is that the user cannot log in. This can be fixed by
setting COLUMNS=80 by hand in Xsession.

Clearly the ultimate cause is some underlying bug which I have yet to
identify. I would appreciate help in tracking down that bug as well,
but given the ugly results for X and simple work around, (test
COLUMNS and set it to 80 if it equals zero), I'm filing this bug.

This never happened to me in the past; it started happening today
after an upgrade. Kdm and curses seem like the most likely culprits of
the packages upgraded today. The really wierd thing is that it only
happens for some accounts and not others. I don't entirely understand
the X login process, which makes it difficult for me to figure out
exactly why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Itai
