The '(**)' indicates that your xorg.conf contains an RgbPath line. Do
things work without symlink if you comment that out?

Bug#384080: Tk may not work without rgb-symlink

2006-08-22 Thread Michael Hartmann
Things work still fine without RgbPath line in xorg.conf and symlink.

I'm not using a xorg.conf generated by Debian, because it doesn't work on my
pc, so I just use the knoppix generated xorg.conf.

When reporting this I forgot to check that with a debian generated xorg.conf.
In fact I was just happy that perl-tk works fine again and reported this to
you and to the tk8.4 maintainer in hope that it is useful.

So if there is no RgbPath line in the Debian generated xorg.conf file, you
propably can close this bug report.

However, I still don't understand why just tk had that problems.

Thank you for your help.

I've installed Debian testing on my machine a few days ago and recognized that
tk and perl-tk don't work:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ wish; echo
Application initialization failed: this isn't a Tk applicationunknown color
name Black
%
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $

At last I checked my xorg log file and there were these lines:
(**) RgbPath set to /usr/lib/X11/rgb
(**) ModulePath set to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules,/usr/lib/xorg/modules
(**) Option AllowMouseOpenFail true
Couldn't open RGB_DB '/usr/lib/X11/rgb'

So a simple symlink solves the problem.
Originally I've sent a bug report to the perl-tk maintainer, so you're maybe
also interested in reading that bug report
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=383018).

I've sent this bug report also to the maintainer of Tk, because I'm not
really sure, whether this is a Tk or a xorg bug.

Thanks, closing per submitter.

Sounds like it's one of the very few things that still require the RGB

Re: glibc and UNACCEPTs

The Dear Project Leader wrote:
Yesterday, glibc 2.3.999.2-10 was accidently uploaded to unstable instead

...

The 2.3.999.2-10 upload (with signatures removed) is available on
ftp-master.debian.org/~ajt/glibc/. Would anyone like to contribute their
thoughts, so we can do an air crash style failure analysis to work
out how we can avoid this class of problem in future, given the safety
net that caught us this time is going away?

Unfortunately it's happened against, this time with the upload of
xorg-server (xserver-xorg-core) 1:1.1.1-3, accidentally uploaded to
unstable instead of experimental. An easy enough mistake, it's only
one little field in a changelog file.

I can think of only a handful of reasonable changes we could make to reduce
these occurances:

1) [technical] Alter dput/dupload to explicitly ask whether to
proceed if the distro from the preceding changelog entry changes (e.g.
experimental-unstable)

2) [technical] Remove the single point of failure by adding a
Distribution: field to debian/control, say. The package will be
rejected if the two fields in control and changelog do not match.

3) [policy] Manual processing by ftp-masters when changing distro.
Their decision is automatic rejection by default unless there is a
changelog entry explicitly stating the distro change is occurs. This
need only apply for uploads to unstable (or stable), not for uploads to
experimental.

4) [human engineering] For team-supported packages, require that
another member of your team verify the package (with special attention
to the distro field in debian/changelog) before uploading.

It would be nice to see 1) done. A Previous-Distribution: field in
.changes filled in during a dpkg-buildpackage run might help to
facilitate it.

dpkg-buildpackage could check and reject for 2) at build time.
Perhaps 2) could be combined with 1) (dput/dupload make
two separate checks)

Unless 2) is practical to implement, then 3) is a very good idea, in my
opinion, since it removes the single point of failure. No longer will
there be just one single field to be miswritten. Manpower-wise,
however, I don't know if it would make too much burden on the
ftp-masters.

Really 4) should be done in any case, but I can understand it could get
annoying at times.

Thanks for listening,

Drew

p.s. the old xserver-xorg 1:1.0.2-9 packages can still be found in testing, or
you can grab the new video drivers from experimental. The full working
set of X11R7.1 packages will all be in unstable soon (in the next
week or so), pending adjustments in versioned depends of the video drivers.

Bug#384151: please add 1280x800 to the list of valid resolutions

2006-08-22 Thread Robert Millan [ackstorm]
Package: xserver-xorg
Severity: wishlist

Please could you add 1280x800 to the list of valid resolutions? This is my
monitor's optimal resolution.

Sidenote: This is getting awkward. I think it'd be a good idea to replace the
multiselect template with a text one that has the same defaults. This way
users would be able to add their own (which is increasingly common due to the
spreading of LCD with their fixed sizes).

or just make dpkg-buildpackage fail if that happens (or rather

Out of curiosity: if you don't specify any resolutions explicitly, does
the X server automagically come up in 1280x800? If not, which driver are
you using?

I haven't been able to reproduce the original bug because one of the
condition needed was Bug#156118 which has been fixed in the meantime.

However I have been able to verify that the other conditions are still
met and the X behavior can still be reproduced:

  - X server at 75 dpi

  - the Type1 module is loaded in the X server

  - the directory /usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 is at the end of X fontpath

  - package gsfonts-x11 installed

I have run the following commands:

### install package gsfonts-x11
# apt-get install gsfonts-x11

### start a new X server (as root)
# startx /usr/bin/icewm -- :1 -dpi 75

### in new display open an xterm and run the following script:

#!/bin/sh
xset fp
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
xset fp rehash
xlsfonts -fn -*-helvetica-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 | grep p-0-iso8859-1

You should see the following output:

-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-0-iso8859-1

The bogus fonts are those with pxlsz=12 and awgWdth=0. Note that
the pxlsz depends on the dpi of the server and will be different
if you run the server at a different dpi.

I don't know if it is correct for the X server to list scalable fonts
as fixed fonts but in that case I think they should be listed *after*
the true fixed fonts, while at the present it is the contrary:

$ xlsfonts -fn -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1
-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-116-75-75-p-0-iso8859-1
-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-67-iso8859-1

In other words it could be simply a problem of sorting the results
in a better way.

Since the Tk bug has been fixed you can't reproduce the bug with
wish but you can show a similar behavior with the following commands:

xfd -fn `xlsfonts -fn -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 |
head -1`
xfd -fn `xlsfonts -fn -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1 |
tail -1`

I have run the test on ubuntu hoary with the following packages:

The old video ABI was 0.8. The new one is 1.0.

Oh yeah, that's what you meant. I read the 1.0s and the 1.1s in your

Your solution sounds reasonable to me.

xserver-xorg binary package (not included here to avoid circular
 dependencies).
   * Likewise remove Depends: xserver-xorg-input-all |
xserver-xorg-input (again, handled by xserver-xorg) to avoid
 circular dependency with drivers.

I think I've got this sorted in svn now:

* all video drivers currently in experimental changed to Provides:
xserver-xorg-video-1.0
instead of Provides: xserver-xorg-video

* xserver-xorg binary package changed to Depends:  xserver-xorg-video-all |
xserver-xorg-video-1.0

*  xserver-xorg-core Depends: xserver-xorg-video-all | xserver-xorg-video is
removed.
It now Conflicts: xserver-xorg-video.

* For good measure Depends: xserver-xorg-input-all | xserver-xorg-input is also
removed from xserver-xorg-core.
The removal of these Dependses is for the purpose of avoiding circular
dependencies with the drivers.

There are a handful of video drivers in unstable only, not experimental, which
I did not touch.

Drew

Re: glibc and UNACCEPTs

Yesterday, glibc 2.3.999.2-10 was accidently uploaded to unstable instead
of experimental, and on the request of the release managers, I UNACCEPTed
it, given it was a major accidental change to a rather core library just
as that library should've been frozen.

Denis Barbier has added that to the clean rule of the experimental glibc:
# Do not accidentally upload into unstable
dpkg-parsechangelog | grep ^Distribution: | grep -q -v unstable

Works nicely.

Ok, if I understood correctly, changes in comparison with what we have now
are:

 - A more standarised pathset, instead of just /emul/ia32-linux. According to
http://wiki.debian.org/toolchain-multiarch, there are plans to make the
toolchain aware of the new paths. Sounds a lot like post-etch, but AFAIK
we can do the same without it (by using --libdir at build time, and adequate
   /etc/ld.so.conf at runtime)

 - dpkg / dak / katie major rework (I haven't read in-depth, but I assume the
point is using the same ia32 code from the i386 port without compiling it
   separately. Definitely post-etch..)

Did I miss something? Is someone able to guess which of them is Daniel

Source package naming

2006-08-22 Thread Ian Campbell
Hi,

Please CC me -- I am not subscribed.

I am in the process of packaging the X driver for the IVTV cards[0] and
I'm wondering about the correct source package name. It seems that the
upstream source is named xf86-video-FOO[1] and that is repacked for
Debian as xserver-xorg-video-FOO[2].

Is there a particular reason for this? I've tried searching the debian-x
archives but I can't see it.

I have xf86-video-ivtvdev_0.10.6.orig.tar.gz and I'm wondering if I
should repack/rename it before upload (well, before searching for a
sponsor ;-)).

In any case the binary package will be xserver-xorg-video-ivtv as you
would expect.

Thanks for your advice,
Ian.

Purely historical reasons: the binary package is named
xserver-xorg-video-foo to have a clear lineage from xserver-xorg.

 I have xf86-video-ivtvdev_0.10.6.orig.tar.gz and I'm wondering if I

I guess the only real reason now is consistency with the rest. elmo
once said on IRC that the binary namespace is reasonably tightly
regulated and was very sensible, but the source package namespace was a
festering mess with a sign out the front saying 'here be dragons'. :)

Cheers,
Daniel

accepted to be the proper fix, so I'm just going to close these reports in

As Daniel says, to provide a clear lineage. The 'xf86' at this point refers
to the DDX, not the server itself. This naming scheme is far more clear to
the average user who doesn't know or care what a DDX is.

 I have xf86-video-ivtvdev_0.10.6.orig.tar.gz and I'm wondering if I
should repack/rename it before upload (well, before searching for a

Don't bother repacking it. Just rename it. I can sponsor the driver if
you're interested. If you want to bring the package under the
maintainership of the XSF with you as the primary uploader[1], you're more
than welcome to do so. Just let us know.

In any case the binary package will be xserver-xorg-video-ivtv as you

Please do.

[1] See http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/Contrib for how we're
structuring maintainance within the team. You'd be de-facto maintainer,
though the XSF would be maintainer in name and we'd all help you out as
need be. If you're not in NM yet, joining the team is a very good
opportunity for learning how Debia works.

The 2.3.999.2-10 upload (with signatures removed) is available on

Unfortunately it's happened against, this time with the upload of
 xorg-server (xserver-xorg-core) 1:1.1.1-3, accidentally uploaded to

one little field in a changelog file.

Crap. Sorry everyone.

Bug#384256: xserver-xorg-core newer than xserver-xorg-video-all

2006-08-22 Thread Bob Hauck
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1:1.1.1-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After doing an apt-get upgrade, X will no longer start and gives an
error message that says the modular driver for radeon is using an outdated
ABI. It appears that the version of xserver-xorg-core has been upgraded but
there is no corresponding upgraded version of xserver-xorg-video-ati.

Reverting to 1.0.2-9 restores a working X setup.

Yes, this was caused by a botched upload that was meant for experimental.
I'm uploading the fixed 1.0.2-10 to unstable right now, so I'm closing this
report. Thank you!

Bug#384263: ati: module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)

2006-08-22 Thread Jeffrey Hundstad
Package: xorg

With the recent update from xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-9 to

ABI mismatch.

This was in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Reverting to xserver-xorg-core_1.0.2-9 causes the system to work once again.

Yes, I added the following lines in debian/rules
# Do not accidentally upload into unstable
dpkg-parsechangelog | grep ^Distribution: | grep -q -v unstable
for that purpose in the glibc experimental branch.

Your version requires this line to be deleted for unstable and then
added again for any future experimental work.

I prepared an alternative snippet by which the test can remain, and
switched off by an explicit extra variable saying simply yes. This
is an extra make rule to go in debian/rules (or xsfmb.mk, for the XSF):

# Before building, check we're not making an accidental upload to unstable
.PHONY: test_stable
test_stable:
@if [ x$(UPLOAD_TO_UNSTABLE) != xyes ]  \
[ -n `dpkg-parsechangelog | grep ^Distribution: | grep -q -v
unstable` ]; \
then \
echo POSSIBLE MISLOAD TO UNSTABLE!; \
echo You have set the distribution to 'unstable' in
debian/changelog; \
echo but have not set UPLOAD_TO_UNSTABLE=yes in debian/rules; \
echo Please fix this before proceeding.; \
exit 1; \
fi

It would be applied when building:
e.g.
build: test_stable patch build-stamp
instead of
build: patch build-stamp

Unstable uploads would then be permitted by placing
UPLOAD_TO_UNSTABLE=yes
in debian/rules.

It would, of course require the 'yes' to be replaced by 'no' and vice
versa, as you go between unstable and experimental. Since we don't
always have ongoing versions developed in experimental, it may not be
worth the bother. But there it is if anyone wants it.

As said on IRC, I really don't want this in the Xorg packages. The penalty
for uploading to unstable by accident is minimal, as joeyh noted. The
actual fix is simple, and this problem occurs so infrequently for us that I
don't want to deal with it.

I'm glad that you simply made this echo a warning rather than die out, but
a warning isn't really going to provide any insurance unless you check the
full build log for every package you build. For X, this is unrealistic. All
this does is give us more code to carry around in xsfbs when the goal is
to prune the thing down to nothing.

That would be good to be add in cdbs. I think we might want to have it
more flexible to allow it to work for CDDs too but I liked it very
much :-D

Bug#384273: xfonts-base: xorg wont start could not open default cursor font 'cursor

2006-08-22 Thread mlaks
Subject: xfonts-base: xorg wont start could not open default cursor font
'cursor'
Package: xfonts-base
Version: 1:1.0.0-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

*** Please type your report below this line ***
I did a fresh install of etch using business card disk, installed
desktop packages.
I then upgraded to sid
from etch. I had a working X initially through the point of the
dist-upgrade.

In fact X continued to work until I did a reboot (I did a reboot because
of a reinstall of linux-image-2.6.16, and system warning reboot
neccessary because of reinstall of same kernel).

Now after reboot X wont start with error message in X.log

Fatal server error:
could not open default cursor font 'cursor'

Now I did a apt-get remove --purge xfont-base
and I get an error message

warning: /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc does not exist or is not a directory
warning: /etc/X11/fonts/misc does not exist or is not a directory
warning: /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc does not exist or is not a directory

and same sort of message with
apt-get install xfont-base.

These directories are present on other sid machines I have.
They have files such as
1)
ls /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc
fonts.alias fonts.cache-1

2)
ls /etc/X11/fonts/misc
xfonts-base.alias

This absence seems to be the source of my problems. What can I do to solve them?

Is this a bug in xfonts-base?

Thanks,

Mitchell Laks

and same sort of message with
 apt-get install xfont-base.

The warnings about /usr/lib/X11 are innocuous warnings, not errors. But if
you get the same warning about /etc/X11/fonts/misc on install, that would be
a serious problem, because that directory is contained in the xfonts-base
package.

But I doubt there's an xfonts-base bug here anyway, because xfonts-base is
at version 1:1.0.0-3 in both testing and unstable.

 2)
 ls /etc/X11/fonts/misc
 xfonts-base.alias

This absence seems to be the source of my problems. What can I do to solve
 them?

Figure out why this directory is missing after reinstalling xfonts-base, if
that's really the case.

If this directory is actually where it should be after installing, then look
somewhere else for the trouble. If you upgraded to sid today, you might
look at whether the new xserver-xorg-core package is the cause, and try
upgrading to the version in incoming.
