Bug#384080: Tk may not work without rgb-symlink
Things work still fine without RgbPath line in xorg.conf and symlink. I'm not using a xorg.conf generated by Debian, because it doesn't work on my pc, so I just use the knoppix generated xorg.conf. When reporting this I forgot to check that with a debian generated xorg.conf. In fact I was just happy that perl-tk works fine again and reported this to you and to the tk8.4 maintainer in hope that it is useful. So if there is no RgbPath line in the Debian generated xorg.conf file, you propably can close this bug report. However, I still don't understand why just tk had that problems. Re: glibc and UNACCEPTs
The Dear Project Leader wrote: Yesterday, glibc 2.3.999.2-10 was accidently uploaded to unstable instead of experimental, and on the request of the release managers, I UNACCEPTed it, given it was a major accidental change to a rather core library just as that library should've been frozen. ... The 2.3.999.2-10 upload (with signatures removed) is available on ftp-master.debian.org/~ajt/glibc/. Would anyone like to contribute their thoughts, so we can do an air crash style failure analysis to work out how we can avoid this class of problem in future, given the safety net that caught us this time is going away? Unfortunately it's happened against, this time with the upload of xorg-server (xserver-xorg-core) 1:1.1.1-3, accidentally uploaded to unstable instead of experimental. An easy enough mistake, it's only one little field in a changelog file. I can think of only a handful of reasonable changes we could make to reduce these occurances: 1) [technical] Alter dput/dupload to explicitly ask whether to proceed if the distro from the preceding changelog entry changes (e.g. experimental-unstable) 2) [technical] Remove the single point of failure by adding a Distribution: field to debian/control, say. The package will be rejected if the two fields in control and changelog do not match. 3) [policy] Manual processing by ftp-masters when changing distro. Their decision is automatic rejection by default unless there is a changelog entry explicitly stating the distro change is occurs. This need only apply for uploads to unstable (or stable), not for uploads to experimental. 4) [human engineering] For team-supported packages, require that another member of your team verify the package (with special attention to the distro field in debian/changelog) before uploading. It would be nice to see 1) done. A Previous-Distribution: field in .changes filled in during a dpkg-buildpackage run might help to facilitate it. dpkg-buildpackage could check and reject for 2) at build time. Perhaps 2) could be combined with 1) (dput/dupload make two separate checks) Unless 2) is practical to implement, then 3) is a very good idea, in my opinion, since it removes the single point of failure. No longer will there be just one single field to be miswritten. Manpower-wise, however, I don't know if it would make too much burden on the ftp-masters. Really 4) should be done in any case, but I can understand it could get annoying at times. Thanks for listening, Drew p.s. the old xserver-xorg 1:1.0.2-9 packages can still be found in testing, or you can grab the new video drivers from experimental. The full working set of X11R7.1 packages will all be in unstable soon (in the next week or so), pending adjustments in versioned depends of the video drivers. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Bug#384151: please add 1280x800 to the list of valid resolutions
Package: xserver-xorg Severity: wishlist Please could you add 1280x800 to the list of valid resolutions? This is my monitor's optimal resolution. Sidenote: This is getting awkward. I think it'd be a good idea to replace the multiselect template with a text one that has the same defaults. This way users would be able to add their own (which is increasingly common due to the spreading of LCD with their fixed sizes). -- Robert Millan ACK STORM, S.L. - http://www.ackstorm.es -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. The removal of these Dependses is for the purpose of avoiding circular dependencies with the drivers. There are a handful of video drivers in unstable only, not experimental, which I did not touch. Re: glibc and UNACCEPTs
Drew Parsons a écrit : The Dear Project Leader wrote: Yesterday, glibc 2.3.999.2-10 was accidently uploaded to unstable instead of experimental, and on the request of the release managers, I UNACCEPTed it, given it was a major accidental change to a rather core library just as that library should've been frozen. Perhaps 2) could be combined with 1) (dput/dupload make two separate checks) Denis Barbier has added that to the clean rule of the experimental glibc: # Do not accidentally upload into unstable dpkg-parsechangelog | grep ^Distribution: | grep -q -v unstable Works nicely. -- .''`. Source package naming
Hi, Please CC me -- I am not subscribed. I am in the process of packaging the X driver for the IVTV cards[0] and I'm wondering about the correct source package name. It seems that the upstream source is named xf86-video-FOO[1] and that is repacked for Debian as xserver-xorg-video-FOO[2]. Is there a particular reason for this? I've tried searching the debian-x archives but I can't see it. I have xf86-video-ivtvdev_0.10.6.orig.tar.gz and I'm wondering if I should repack/rename it before upload (well, before searching for a sponsor ;-)). In any case the binary package will be xserver-xorg-video-ivtv as you would expect. Thanks for your advice, Ian. Purely historical reasons: the binary package is named xserver-xorg-video-foo to have a clear lineage from xserver-xorg. I have xf86-video-ivtvdev_0.10.6.orig.tar.gz and I'm wondering if I should repack/rename it before upload (well, before searching for a sponsor ;-)). I guess the only real reason now is consistency with the rest. elmo once said on IRC that the binary namespace is reasonably tightly regulated and was very sensible, but the source package namespace was a festering mess with a sign out the front saying 'here be dragons'. :) Cheers, Daniel signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I have xf86-video-ivtvdev_0.10.6.orig.tar.gz and I'm wondering if I should repack/rename it before upload (well, before searching for a sponsor ;-)). Don't bother repacking it. Just rename it. I can sponsor the driver if you're interested. If you want to bring the package under the maintainership of the XSF with you as the primary uploader[1], you're more than welcome to do so. Just let us know. In any case the binary package will be xserver-xorg-video-ivtv as you would expect. Please do. - David Nusinow [1] See http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/Contrib for how we're structuring maintainance within the team. As said on IRC, I really don't want this in the Xorg packages. The penalty for uploading to unstable by accident is minimal, as joeyh noted. The actual fix is simple, and this problem occurs so infrequently for us that I don't want to deal with it. I'm glad that you simply made this echo a warning rather than die out, but a warning isn't really going to provide any insurance unless you check the full build log for every package you build. For X, this is unrealistic. All this does is give us more code to carry around in xsfbs when the goal is to prune the thing down to nothing. - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
