Bug#386370: Acknowledgement (xserver-xfree86: intel 945 chipset not supported [i810])
xfree86 4.3 is relatively old and therefore does not support intel 945. The new version is Xorg (X11R7.1), which does support it (with i810 1.6.5). The new version of Debian stable (etch) containing this version of X is due for release in December. The new i810 driver is currently passing final checks before being placed into etch, and ought to arrive there within a couple more weeks. Once that has happened you may find it interesting to upgrade your system to debian testing, which is a beta version of the forthcoming etch. The reason why the latest stable release does not yet contain the upgraded versions is that in Debian stable means the version wil not change at all, apart from security fixes. This is an important feature for enterprise users running mission-critical servers, for instance, or others who require a nonmoving target for their systems management. Desktop users who prefer a system closer to the cutting edge may like to use debian testing instead. And if you get really daring once you've found your way, you could even try the unstable (or even experimental) versions. experimental is the current testing ground for the version which supports intel 945. When we are ready we will transfer it to unstable, from where it will be automatically fed into testing after 10 days, if no critical bugs are found. Bug#386370: xserver-xfree86: intel 945 chipset not supported [i810]
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1 Can't get X running on my laptop: ASUS A3FP with Intel 945GM chipset. Can you please help me? Worth adding, to solve your immediate problem, you can always use the generic vesa driver instead of the chip-specific one. This will not give you 3D acceleration, so you will not be able to enjoy the delights of Penguin Racer, but will otherwise work just fine, offering you perfectly a good graphics interface. Bug#386385: xkb-data: Wrong codes for Greek polytonic breathing signs
If this roadmap makes sense to you, can you please file bug reports with patches against libx11-data for steps 1 and 2? This is much easier to perform by people reading Greek ;-) I am neither a Greek, nor a real expert in Ancient Greek, so I want to be very careful. I am just interested in making the 'breathing signs' accessible to *international* users (using a non-Greek UTF-8 locale). I think it would be helpful to have a test case to confirm the wrong behaviour and to verify the fix. Is a url available? It seems to disables all offscreen pixmaps. Option XAANoOffscreenPixmaps works just as well, but there may be more involved. The patch only disables offscreen pixmaps when the GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap extension is first used, so it's probably an improvement for people switching between GLX compositing managers and other means of presentation. However, I wonder if this works with EXA. It doesn't seem to check that XAA is actually active, and I suspect it's basically luck if the XAA functions don't crash when it's not. This needs clarifying before the patch can be applied. I would be willing to do some testing, but I'm unsure as to where to start. Just fire up the X server with EXA and start compiz, basically. In addition, I only have an Intel 855GM card to test on, and IIRC, EXA for the i810 driver wasn't very stable last time I checked. It's stable IME, although slow, but that shouldn't matter for this. YMMV. Anyway, Shawn said on IRC: oh, and EXA causes X server to die when compiz is started :) which matches my expected failure mode of this patch: it tries to reference XAA symbols, which are unresolved because XAA isn't loaded, so the X server is aborted immediately. The only problem remaining is that the version of Mesa currently in experimental is not recent enough for compiz to work correctly. I think we should go with the 6.5.1 release anyway. That was going to be next on my checklist. Try and build with Mesa 6.5.1, but I think Shawn already tried that and it still needed some patching to work correctly, but I'll double-check. Well, I'm not aware of any changes since the last release candidate that would affect this... P.S.: no need to Cc: me, I'm subscribed to the list. Bug#386587: agpgart/i810: xserver will not start
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.0.23 Severity: important Perhaps this is not the correct package for this bug report, but I'm hoping a quick fix is available. As of my most recent dist-upgrade, the xorg server no longer starts. The error is AGP GART support is not available. Make sure your kernel agpgart support or that the kernel agpgart module is loaded. The final message is Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. I have an i810 video card, and lsmod shows that the agpgart module is indeed loaded (as it has always been). I also tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but this seems to have given the same configuration information again and I still get the same error. This error is new: when I went to bed late night, everything worked fine, but on restarting my system today it is no longer usable. I have done a couple of apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade upgrades in the last couple of days since I last restarted the system. Any advice on how to fix this would be appreciated. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.17-2-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages xserver-xorg depends on: ii debconf 1.5.3 Debian configuration management sy ii x11-common1:7.0.23 X Window System (X.Org) infrastruc ii xbase-clients 1:7.1.ds-3 miscellaneous X clients ii xkb-data 0.8-12 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii xserver-xorg-core 2:1.0.2-10 X.Org X server -- core server ii xserver-xorg-input-al 1:7.0.23 the X.Org X server -- input driver ii xserver-xorg-input-ev 1:1.1.2-1 X.Org X server -- evdev input driv ii xserver-xorg-input-kb 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- keyboard input d ii xserver-xorg-input-mo 1:1.0.4-3 X.Org X server -- mouse input driv ii xserver-xorg-video-al 1:7.0.23 the X.Org X server -- output drive ii xserver-xorg-video-ap 1:1.0.1.5-2X.Org X server -- APM display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ar 1:0.5.0.5-2X.Org X server -- ark display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-at 1:6.5.8.0-1X.Org X server -- ATI display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ch 1:1.0.1.3-3X.Org X server -- Chips display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-ci 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Cirrus display d ii xserver-xorg-video-cy 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Cyrix display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-du 1:0.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- dummy display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-fb 1:0.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- fbdev display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-gl 1:1.0.1.3-3X.Org X server -- Glint display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-i1 1:1.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- i128 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i7 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- i740 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i8 1:1.5.1.0-2X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx ii xserver-xorg-video-im 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- IMSTT display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-mg 1:1.2.1.3.dfsg.1-2 X.Org X server -- MGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ne 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Neomagic display ii xserver-xorg-video-ne 1:0.1.4.1-3X.Org X server -- Newport display ii xserver-xorg-video-ns 1:2.7.6.5-2X.Org X server -- NSC display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:1.0.1.5-2X.Org X server -- NV display drive ii xserver-xorg-video-re 1:4.0.1.3.dfsg.1-2 X.Org X server -- Rendition displa ii xserver-xorg-video-s3 1:1.8.6.5-2X.Org X server -- S3 ViRGE display ii xserver-xorg-video-sa 1:2.0.2.3-4X.Org X server -- Savage display d ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:1.3.1.5-3X.Org X server -- SiliconMotion di ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:0.8.1.3-2X.Org X server -- SiS display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:0.7.1.3-2X.Org X server -- SiS USB display ii xserver-xorg-video-td 1:1.1.1.3-3X.Org X server -- tdfx display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-tg 1:1.0.0.5-3X.Org X server -- TGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-tr 1:1.0.1.2-2X.Org X server -- Trident display ii xserver-xorg-video-ts 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Tseng display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-v4 0.0.1.5-1 X.Org X server -- Video 4 Linux di ii xserver-xorg-video-ve 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- VESA display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-vg 1:4.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- VGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-vi 1:0.1.33.2-3 X.Org X server -- VIA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-vm 1:10.11.1.3-2 X.Org X server -- VMware display d ii xserver-xorg-video-vo 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Voodoo display d Versions of packages xserver-xorg recommends: ii discover1 1.7.18 hardware identification system ii laptop-detect 0.12.1
last chance to do something about discover1 etc: I give up
For years and years, X has had a unique special case: It needs to have discover1 and some other software (currently also xresprobe[1]) installed before it is preconfigured. If the software is not installed then X's config script will silently not use it during hardware detection, and will do a worse job of generating xorg.conf than it would otherwise. Installing the software in the same apt run as X won't work, so it can't just be a predependency. For years and years, I've been tripping over this special case, and executing various pratfalls. In woody, the result was that this stuff wasn't installed in time, and things sucked. In sarge, we managed to make it work, at the expense of a lot of wasted time in coding and testing special cases. I think it didn't work in all cases still. In etch the latest fun is that tasksel can hang in some cases when it's trying to install this stuff. (See bug #386244.) I'm tired of this special case making me look like a fool, and I'm very tired of it wasting days of my time. I've asked the X maintainers before, many times, if they could please fix X so it doesn't abuse its config script to do hardware detection. If it did it in its postinst, there would not be any problem at all. I've been fobbed off repeatedly. This is my final plea for you to do it, and do it *now*, not in some future planned grand rewrite. If it doesn't happen soon, I'll have to pursue some other fix. Current ideas: * Remove the special case from tasksel. It will make X tend to run without the hardware detection tools it needs, which might end up being an RC bug (on X). * Bloat the base system by adding all the hardware detection tools that X needs to it. This works because if X's config script needs something from base to run, that's normal, and no longer a special case. It sucks because having discover1 and xresprobe in base is crazy bloat. -- see shy jo [1] And, reading the code, maybe prtconf on sparc, although that's not currently done. Bug#386587: agpgart/i810: xserver will not start
How about intel_agp, is it loaded too? Could you send appropriate parts of your logs? For instance the outputs from lsmod, dmesg (or /var/log/syslog) and lspci? I assume there is nothing further in /var/log/Xorg.0.log apart from AGP GART support is not available. ? Drew -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
