Bug#386370: Acknowledgement (xserver-xfree86: intel 945 chipset not supported [i810])

2006-09-08 Thread Drew Parsons
xfree86 4.3 is relatively old and therefore does not support intel 945.
The new version is Xorg (X11R7.1), which does support it (with i810
1.6.5). The new version of Debian stable (etch) containing this
version of X is due for release in December.

The new i810 driver is currently passing final checks before being
placed into etch, and ought to arrive there within a couple more weeks.
Once that has happened you may find it interesting to upgrade your
system to debian testing, which is a beta version of the forthcoming
etch.

The reason why the latest stable release does not yet contain the
upgraded versions is that in Debian stable means the version wil not
change at all, apart from security fixes. This is an important feature
for enterprise users running mission-critical servers, for instance, or
others who require a nonmoving target for their systems management.
Desktop users who prefer a system closer to the cutting edge may like to
use debian testing instead. And if you get really daring once you've
found your way, you could even try the unstable (or even experimental)
versions. experimental is the current testing ground for the version
which supports intel 945. When we are ready we will transfer it to
unstable, from where it will be automatically fed into testing after
10 days, if no critical bugs are found.

Bug#386385: xkb-data: Wrong codes for Greek polytonic breathing signs

2006-09-08 Thread Drew Parsons

If this roadmap makes sense to you, can you please file bug
reports with patches against libx11-data for steps 1 and 2?
This is much easier to perform by people reading Greek ;-)

I am neither a Greek, nor a real expert in Ancient Greek, so I
want to be very careful. I am just interested in making the
'breathing signs' accessible to *international* users (using a
 non-Greek UTF-8 locale).

I think it would be helpful to have a test case to confirm the wrong
behaviour and to verify the fix. Is a url available?

   Option
XAANoOffscreenPixmaps works just as well, but there may be more
   involved.

The patch only disables offscreen pixmaps when the
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap extension is first used, so it's probably an
improvement for people switching between GLX compositing managers and
other means of presentation. However, I wonder if this works with EXA.
It doesn't seem to check that XAA is actually active, and I suspect it's
basically luck if the XAA functions don't crash when it's not. This
needs clarifying before the patch can be applied.

I would be willing to do some testing, but I'm unsure as to where to start.

Just fire up the X server with EXA and start compiz, basically.

In addition, I only have an Intel 855GM card to test on, and IIRC, EXA for
the i810 driver wasn't very stable last time I checked.

It's stable IME, although slow, but that shouldn't matter for this.
YMMV.

Anyway, Shawn said on IRC:

oh, and EXA causes X server to die when compiz is started :)

which matches my expected failure mode of this patch: it tries to
reference XAA symbols, which are unresolved because XAA isn't loaded, so
the X server is aborted immediately.

The only problem remaining is that the version of Mesa currently in
experimental is not recent enough for compiz to work correctly.

I think we should go with the 6.5.1 release anyway.

That was going to be next on my checklist. Try and build with Mesa 6.5.1, but
I think Shawn already tried that and it still needed some patching to work
 correctly, but I'll double-check.

Well, I'm not aware of any changes since the last release candidate that
would affect this...

P.S.: no need to Cc: me, I'm subscribed to the list.

Whatever.

Anyway the key that should give ],},º stops working.

Severity: normal

In continuation of my message in bug 256706. As it has been declared
fixed, but I still suffer keyboard problems, I suppose my problem is
_not_ the one of this bug. Behaviour has changed since -6, but is
still not correct.

I have a Microsoft Natural Keyboard, US qwerty. That's a qwerty 104
keys keyboard.

Intended behaviour: Alt keys are Alt, left waving flag key is Meta,
right waving flag key is compose (Multi_key), menu key is menu.

XKB config:

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
Driver keyboard
Option CoreKeyboard
Option XkbRules xfree86
Option XkbModel microsoft
Option XkbLayout us
Option XkbOptionsaltwin:left_meta_win,compose:rwin
EndSection

When starting up X, the following behaviour happens:

 - Emacs does not recognise Meta as Meta, but recognises Alt as Meta,
which it shouldn't. Note that if I remember well, Emacs
automatically treats Alt as Meta if it thinks the current keymap
does not have a Meta. This might be what is happening.

 - TeXmacs recognises Alt as Alt, but not Meta.

 - sawfish does not recognise Alt as Alt, but recognises Meta as Meta.

Which makes me very confused as to what could be wrong.

At startup:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap
xmodmap: up to 5 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e)
lockCaps_Lock (0x42)
control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x6d)
mod1Alt_L (0x40), Alt_L (0x7d)
mod2Num_Lock (0x4d)
mod3
mod4Alt_R (0x71), Meta_L (0x73), Super_L (0x7f), Hyper_L (0x80),
Meta_L (0x9c)
mod5Mode_switch (0x5d), ISO_Level3_Shift (0x7c)

Trying to correct it manually:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap -e 'clear mod1'
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap -e 'add mod1 = 0x73'
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap
xmodmap: up to 5 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

mod2Num_Lock (0x4d)
mod3
mod4Alt_R (0x71), Meta_L (0x73), Super_L (0x7f), Hyper_L (0x80),
Meta_L (0x9c)
mod5Mode_switch (0x5d), ISO_Level3_Shift (0x7c)

Oups... It shouldn't say 0x27 for mod1, I said 0x73. Let's try another way:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap -e 'clear mod1'
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap -e 'add mod1 = Meta_L'
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap
xmodmap: up to 5 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e)
lockCaps_Lock (0x42)
control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x6d)
mod1Alt_L (0x40), Meta_L (0x73), Meta_L (0x9c)
mod2Num_Lock (0x4d)
mod3
mod4Alt_R (0x71), Meta_L (0x73), Super_L (0x7f), Hyper_L (0x80),
Meta_L (0x9c)
mod5Mode_switch (0x5d), ISO_Level3_Shift (0x7c)

Not what I asked for.

Hi,

Language switching applet does not show any other added keyboard layout
except default.
Steps to reproduce:
1. default layout lithuanian qwerty (numeric)
2. open keyboard properties
3. add russian (cyrillic phonetic) in section layouts
4. close keyboard propertes window

Expected result: section groups should allow to choose between
lithuanian and rusian layouts.

Actual result(Bug): section groups shows only one option lithuanian qwerty
(phonetic)

In the Netherlands all (well probably 99%) of the pc users have a US
international keyboard, they also do want to type the Euro character.
The pc/us(intl) and pc/us_intl (and pc/us(alt-intl) which is identical) layouts
give you that, but they also gives you very annoying deadkeys. At the moment
there is no easy way (other then editing one of these files oneself) to get a
functional Euro key on a US-intl keyboard _without_ deadkeys.

I added a very small patch that adds this possibility. One can then use
layout = us_intl, variant = nodeadkeys to get such a layout.

grts Tim

In the Netherlands all (well probably 99%) of the pc users have a US
international keyboard, they also do want to type the Euro character.
The pc/us(intl) and pc/us_intl (and pc/us(alt-intl) which is identical)
 layouts
give you that, but they also gives you very annoying deadkeys.

With xkb-data, the Euro sign is available by adding any of those
options:
eurosign:eAdd the EuroSign to the E key.
eurosign:5Add the EuroSign to the 5 key.
eurosign:2Add the EuroSign to the 2 key.
If you use the 'us' layout, you also need to tell which key has to be
pressed to select 3rd level symbol, so your option settings could look
like eurosign:e,lv3:ralt_switch

I am thus closing this bug, thanks for your report.

Since the upgrade of xlibs from version 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-10,
symbols accessed with AltGr + some key are prepended with an Escape character.

Also, the Alt-anykey and Alt-Shift-anykey produce the same symbol,
both Alt-a and Alt-A result in escape-a,
Alt-1 and Alt-! result in escape-1,

This behaviour is visible in e.g. in rxvt, kwrite, jed, xjed.

It holds also for other language settings, with e.g.
  setxkbmap de
  setxkbmap de nodeadkeys
  setxkbmap fr
  setxkbmap cz

Sincerely

Guenter Milde

Starting X on a fresh sid installation (with an xorg.conf created
previously on 6.8.2) reports the following:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server

The file /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/el is indeed missing on the current
version.
X starts but greek layout is not available.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux 3.1, kernel 2.6.15, libc6 2.3.6-13.

After an update yesterday, Kde does not start up anymore, this is the content

I tried to downgrade libxft2 from 2.1.8.2-8 to 2.1.7 cause someone obviously had
success doing this but that caused no change for my system.

Bug#386385: xkb-data: Wrong codes for Greek polytonic breathing signs

2006-09-08 Thread Jan Willem Stumpel
Drew Parsons wrote:

I think it would be helpful to have a test case to confirm the

Hmm.. this is a keyboard thing, not a display thing, so how could
a URL help? xev can be used to verify the fix, of course.

The bug itself has been reported already in Ubuntu and SuSE,
though not in Debian, e.g.

http://www.mail-archive.com/desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com/msg06568.html

and other places.

Bug#386587: agpgart/i810: xserver will not start

2006-09-08 Thread Jason Dorje Short
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.23
Severity: important

Perhaps this is not the correct package for this bug report, but I'm hoping
a quick fix is available.

As of my most recent dist-upgrade, the xorg server no longer starts. The
error is AGP GART support is not available. Make sure your kernel agpgart
support or that the kernel agpgart module is loaded. The final message is
Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I have an i810 video card, and lsmod shows that the agpgart module is indeed
loaded (as it has always been). I also tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg,
but this seems to have given the same configuration information again and
I still get the same error.

This error is new: when I went to bed late night, everything worked fine,
but on restarting my system today it is no longer usable. I have done a
couple of apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade upgrades in the
last couple of days since I last restarted the system.

Any advice on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Versions of packages xserver-xorg recommends:
ii discover1 1.7.18 hardware identification system
ii laptop-detect 0.12.1

last chance to do something about discover1 etc: I give up

2006-09-08 Thread Joey Hess
For years and years, X has had a unique special case: It needs to have
discover1 and some other software (currently also xresprobe[1]) installed
before it is preconfigured. If the software is not installed then X's
config script will silently not use it during hardware detection, and
will do a worse job of generating xorg.conf than it would otherwise.
Installing the software in the same apt run as X won't work, so it can't
just be a predependency.

For years and years, I've been tripping over this special case, and
executing various pratfalls. In woody, the result was that this stuff
wasn't installed in time, and things sucked. In sarge, we managed to
make it work, at the expense of a lot of wasted time in coding and
testing special cases. I think it didn't work in all cases still. In
etch the latest fun is that tasksel can hang in some cases when it's
trying to install this stuff. (See bug #386244.) I'm tired of this
special case making me look like a fool, and I'm very tired of it
wasting days of my time.

I've asked the X maintainers before, many times, if they could please
fix X so it doesn't abuse its config script to do hardware detection. If
it did it in its postinst, there would not be any problem at all. I've
been fobbed off repeatedly. This is my final plea for you to do it, and
do it *now*, not in some future planned grand rewrite.

If it doesn't happen soon, I'll have to pursue some other fix. Current ideas:

* Remove the special case from tasksel. It will make X tend to run
without the hardware detection tools it needs, which might end up
being an RC bug (on X).
* Bloat the base system by adding all the hardware detection tools that
X needs to it. This works because if X's config script needs something
from base to run, that's normal, and no longer a special case. It
sucks because having discover1 and xresprobe in base is crazy bloat.

How about intel_agp, is it loaded too?

Could you send appropriate parts of your logs? For instance the outputs

I assume there is nothing further in /var/log/Xorg.0.log apart from
AGP GART support is not available. ?

libxxf86misc override disparity

2006-09-08 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

libxxf86misc-dev_1.0.1-2_i386.deb: package says section is x11, override says
libdevel.
libxxf86misc1-dbg_1.0.1-2_i386.deb: package says section is x11, override says
libdevel.
libxxf86misc1_1.0.1-2_i386.deb: package says section is x11, override says libs.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

[NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one
like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore
this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in
due course, but until then the installer will send these automated
mails; sorry.]
