Bug#390203: Acknowledgement (xserver-xorg-video-mga: Black screen on G400)

2006-09-30 Thread Meelis Roos

Meanwhile it seems it's not so bad, so at least the priority can be
downgraded to normal (not sure about closing it yet). It appears that at
85 Hz I can get any resolution up to 1162x864 but not 1280x960 or
1280x1024. I can also get 1280x960 @ 60 Hz.

So it might be my monitor dying (no good way to test it yet, it's a
heavy 20 CRT), or some problem with programming higher clock rates. Has
anything changed it clock setting/... in the last month?

These break X semantics, and according to Thierry they don't make much

Bug#390319: compiz: Doesnt refresh windows content

2006-09-30 Thread mateusz
Package: compiz
Version: 0.0.13+git20060928-2
Severity: important

When I run compiz then windows are not refreshed, minimalize and maximalize
force refresh.

I also get the following output
:~ compiz --replace
libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x4b
/usr/bin/compiz.real: No stencil buffer. Clipping of transformed windows
is not going to be correct when screen is transformed.
/usr/bin/compiz.real: Couldn't load plugin 'gconf'

I think its all about stencil buffer. Is there a way not to use it and
still have windows refreshed ?

For help thanks in advance,

Try to install libxcomposite1 from unstable, it just fixed my problem. I
guess a versioned dependency is required.

Yup, that fixed the problem for me (although now I've hit another one
that's probably unrelated to this bug).

For nvidia users, version 9625 or greater of the nvidia drivers is

Removing useless library dependancies from xmotd

2006-09-30 Thread Marcin Owsiany
Hi,

I am trying to limit the number of libraries that xmotd links against,
as advised by the recent post to d-d-a.

The Imakefile contains:

MOTD_LIBRARIES = $(XPM_LIB)  $(HTML_LIB_DIR) $(HTML_LIB) $(MOTIF_LIB_DIR)
$(MOTIF_LIB)
LOCAL_LIBRARIES = $(MOTD_LIBRARIES) XawClientLibs

By experimenting, I've found out that $(XMOTD_LIBRARIES) actually
expands to an empty string, while XawClientLibs expands to:

-lXaw -lXmu -lXt -lSM -lICE -lXpm -lXext -lX11

Which makes xmotd depend on uncecessary libraries. I did some grepping
and found that (I don't know whether this is the right file, but others
contain similar definitions):

/usr/lib/X11/config/X11.tmpl:#define XawClientLibs $(XAWLIB) $(XMULIB)
$(XTOOLLIB) $(XPMLIB) $(EXTRAXAWCLIENTLIBS) $(XLIB)

So I experimented some more, and replaced the LOCAL_LIBRARIES definition
with:

LOCAL_LIBRARIES = $(MOTD_LIBRARIES) $(XAWLIB)

Which in turn makes the linker arguments expand to just:
-lXaw

That seems sufficient, as xmotd still compiles and runs fine.

Now some questions:
 - is it OK for me to make this modification in my package? Won't it
break on some other (Debian) architecture?
 - maybe it's a good idea in general, and Debian xorg should be modified
to expand XawClientLibs to just $(XAWLIB) ?

regards,

Marcin

Report of successful Beryl packages build

2006-09-30 Thread Jose Manuel Delgado Mendinueta
Yesterday, I build Beryl (Compiz fork by Quinstorm and others), with the
only quirk of installing libxcomposite 0.3.0 from incoming.debian.org.
By now, I think libxcomposite is in unstable, so all requirements to
build Beryl (and Compiz) are NOW in unstable. Please, use that version
of libxcomposite, in order to avoid missed functions when executing
(previous versions of the library DON'T work). My hardware is a Dell
Inspiron 510m laptop, with i855GM with 128 MB shared memory (yes, it is
rather slow, but works!!!).

When building the packages, there is a small flaw, since there are a
self-dependence, so the packages need a small corrections (I build it
manually, and after building beryl-core, you have to install it in order
to build the rest of packages: beryl, beryl-plugins, beryl-settings,
emerald, emerald-theme-manager.

For running Beryl, I followed the instructions on this page:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beryl. For Beryl source code, check
out www.beryl-project.org.

I hope this to help. Greetings,

Jose Manuel Delgado Mendinueta (Mendi)

* Package name: xephyr
  Version : 1.0.1
Upstream Author : X.Org [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.freedesktop.org
* License : MIT/X
  Description : X server that outputs to a window on a pre-existing X
display

Xephyr is a kdrive server that outputs an X11 window. It works much like
Xnest, but has support for modern extensions like composite, damage, and
randr. Unlike Xnest, which is an X proxy and is limited to the capabilities
of the host X server, Xephyr is a real X server which uses the host X
server window as a framebuffer via fast SHM XImages.

This package is built from the xserver-xorg-core package, and will thus be
maintained by the XSF.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-tdfx
Version: 1:7.1.0-1
Severity: important

My setup is Xinerama triple-head setup with a tdfx-controlled screen
(0) on the left, and two radeon-controlled screens to the right
(1,2). The system is an amd64-native running sid.

Yesterday, I upgraded to latest sid and removed unneeded packages
(aptitude log below). When I restarted X, I experienced major
problems when trying to move windows across. If I moved a window
from screen 1 to screen 0 (from radeon to tdfx), everything would be
as expected until the mouse hit the edge. At that point, X just
restarts and I am brought back to xdm.

Before the upgrade, I had never seen this problem.

Bug#390359: xserver-xorg-video-i810: xserver crashes with a dual head config

2006-09-30 Thread Joao Cachopo
Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810
Version: 2:1.6.5-3
Severity: important

Hi!

I'm not completely sure that this is a bug of the i810 driver,
although it seems so. But, I suppose that it may be some other
problem related with the newer version of the xserver...

After the recent update to version 7.1 of the xorg xserver, which
included the 1.6.5-3 version of the i810 driver, my X session crashes
after a few seconds (sometimes one or two minutes) of making a login
into my area.

After the crash, the GDM tries to restart the xserver again, but with
no success. I have to reboot the machine to be able to start X again,
leading to another crash after I login in the GDM.

The two particularities of my system are:

  - I use the 855resolution program to tweak the video BIOS so that I
can use the 1400x1050 native resolution of my Asus M3N, which has
a broken BIOS.

  - I have an xorg.conf configuration that specifies two screens
(without xinerama) so that I can plug my laptop into a projector
whenever I do presentations.

I removed the call to the 855resolution but the problem persisted.

When I change the xorg.conf to a single head configuration, however,
the problem disappears. Thus, it seems to be a problem with the dual
head configuration.

The diff between the single head config (my current xorg.conf) and the
config that causes the crash (xorg.conf.dualhead) is the following:

Note that the dualhead version works flawlessly with the previous
version of the xserver and the i810 driver.

I've downloaded, compiled, and tested the current version (as of two
hours ago) of the xf86-video-intel module from the git repository at
anongit.freedesktop.org, but the problem remains. I also tried the
modesetting branch (hoping to get rid of the 855resolution hack), but
this version does not work at all in my computer.

Finally, the Xorg.0.log file after the crash is the following:

Report of succesful Beryl packages build

2006-09-30 Thread Jose Manuel Delgado Mendinueta
Yesterday, I build Beryl (Compiz fork by Quinstorm and others), with the
only quirk of installing libxcomposite 0.3.0 from incoming.debian.org.
By now, I think libxcomposite is in unstable, so all requirements to
build Beryl (and Compiz) are NOW in unstable.
My hardware is Dell Inspiron 510m, with i855GM with share memory (yes,
it is slow, but works!!!).

When building the packages, there is a small flaw, since there are a
self-dependence, so the packages need a small corrections (I build it
manually, and after building beryl-core, you have to install it in order
to build the rest of packages: beryl, beryl-plugins, beryl-settings,
emerald, emerald-theme-manager.

For running Beryl, I followed the instructions on this page:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beryl. For Beryl source code, check
out www.beryl-project.org.

I hope this to help. Greetings,

Jose Manuel Delgado Mendinueta (Mendi)

Bug#389335: compile problem

2006-09-30 Thread Torsten Crass
Hi there,

since the family would be realy happy if they could watch TV again ;-) on
our VIA EPIA-based MythTV box, I finally tried to compile the via driver
from source. Compilation, however, fails, no matter whether or not
Starling's patch is applied (log see below). So a working binary package
would be highly appreciated...

Thanx for all your efforts --

Torsten

Package: libgl1-mesa-dri
Version: 6.5.1-0.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

An upgrade from xorg 7.0 to xorg 7.1 causes 3d stop working with savage
dri driver (with a mobile Prosavage KN133 twister).

glxinfo report direct rendering=yes but glxgears and any other opengl
app are just displaying black screen, without crashing the whole
system.

I think this bug is the same as described in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6357

PS : I have (by mistake) already submitted this bug for package
xlibmesa-dri, sorry

Bug#368558: marked as done (x11proto-gl: debian/copyright does not contain actual licenses)

Debian bug tracking system administrator
(administrator, Debian Bugs database)

---BeginMessage---
Package: x11proto-gl-dev
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.3

The copyright file contains a copy of the license notices from the top of the
header files. So far so good. HOWEVER, those notices do not contain the actual
licenses. They merely refer to them by reference:

http://oss.sgi.com/projects/FreeB
and
http://www.sgi.com/software/opensource/glx/license.html

Policy requires that an actual verbatim copy of each license be included in the
package.
Neither license is in fact included in the package.

(This is also quite dangerous; if those websites ever vanish, we have *no*
license.)

The FreeB license is available upstream only in two rather inconvenient formats:
Postscript and Microsoft Word. Nevertheless, including the Postscript version
is
far better than the current situation.

Unfortunately, it is not entirely clear that we actually have permission to
redistribute the text of the FreeB license. Does anyone have a contact
at SGI?

This bug is independent from the bug regarding the freeness of these licenses.

This bug was fixed with the upload of 1.4.8-1 to unstable. Thanks.

Re: Removing useless library dependancies from xmotd

2006-09-30 Thread Bernhard R. Link
* Marcin Owsiany [EMAIL PROTECTED] [060930 17:52]:
 Now some questions:
  - is it OK for me to make this modification in my package? Won't it
break on some other (Debian) architecture?

i think all Debian architectures are similar enough that if it works
on one, it should work on all of them.

Some more things to check:
Does it still link properly with -Wl,-z,defs?
If you overlooked a library needed, the symbols will still be loaded
as the library is pulled in later. If you want to be sure, take a look
at all UND'efined symbols in objdump -T's output and make sure you have
all of them in the libraries you are linking directly against.

If you change anything with Xaw and/or Xt please make sure editres still
works on your application. Xaw makes some funny little linker trick to
modify Xt so that editres works by default, which fails if some symbols
are loaded in the wrong order.

  - maybe it's a good idea in general, and Debian xorg should be modified
to expand XawClientLibs to just $(XAWLIB) ?

I fear it is a better idea to get rid of imake alltogether. While xmotd
is unlikely to use anything from libxpm directly, other applications
may. And as this was always linked against, applications do not
otherwise state that they need it.

Hochachtungsvoll,
  Bernhard R. Link

I guess some dependency is missing; I didn't do a full dist-upgrade
(since my mirror isn't synced yet).

FWIW, it took about ten seconds before it actually got to that part, but
so did metacity --replace, so I guess that's some sort of unrelated
problem local to my machine.

Bug#379480: X Key/Mouse Freeze might be time/clock based

2006-09-30 Thread Berg, Michael
Several of my friends and I have been having similar problems - X
keyboard/mouse input occasionally freezing.

The problem has been encountered on both i386 and AMD64 systems, with both
nvidia and ati video cards, with both free and proprietary drivers.

The interesting thing is that most of our systems would freeze at almost
the exact same time each time it happened (once every few months). It
happened again today, and three of our systems (in various locations around
the city and state) all froze up during the same 1-2 minute period.

So I started really looking into time-based triggers. During my
troubleshooting experiments, I found that if the system clock is adjusted
even a few seconds backward, X input will freeze up a few seconds later.

For example:
1. Make sure any NTP software is turned off (since we want to know what
changes are being made to the clock).

2. Execute the date command and then adjust the time back slightly (about 2
minutes backward is used in this example).

Every time I tried this, X keyboard and mouse input would freeze up a few
seconds later. Desktop applets like the system clock, CPU monitor, network
activity, etc would all still be actively displaying (so the screen is
still updating), but I would be unable to mouse between windows, hot-key
between windows, type into the currently focused xterm, Ctrl-Alt-backspace
to kill X, or Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a terminal window.

ssh'ing in from another computer and then stopping gdm and/or X would allow
me to recover, restart X and run other test scenarios.

Can those of you who are also having this problem try the clock adjustment
test above and see if you have the same results?

How many of you who are experiencing the problem are running NTP
synchronization software on your system?

I should also note that I could adjust the clock forward as much as I
wanted with no adverse effects (I had test cases of moving forward a few
seconds, a few minutes, a few hours, and almost an entire day), but any
adjustment of the clock backward from its current setting triggered the
problem.

I'm running openbox, and my friends were both running GNOME (one on top of
openbox and one on top of metacity).

I had the same results in my tests whether the X session was started
through GDM or from startx on the command line, and the same results
whether xscreensaver was running or not.

My theory on the three computers having having the problem at the same time
is that a small backward re-adjustment may have propagated through the NTP
servers we're using - which triggered the problem.

For those of you who are experiencing this problem more frequently, if you
have worse than average clock drift and are running NTP software, your
system would probably be having to skip the clock back more often than
most on most systems. Or you may be using a very jittery NTP server.
People who aren't running NTP probably wouldn't encounter the problem.
But please respond to this if you are experiencing this and don't use NTP
(every data point can help track down a bug).

Anyway, hopefully this helps track down the problem.

Michael

Hi,

 This package fail in debsums:
/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/fonts.dirFAILED
/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/fonts.scale FAILED

This is probably because some postinst updates these files. If you
use dh_md5sums, I suggest you exclude the files via -X.

   Thanks,

Bug#389822: something like this should fix it

2006-09-30 Thread Marco Amadori

similar way:

if ! db_get debian-installer/keymap; then

else
  first_time_keymap=set
  DI_KEYMAP=us

  else
DI_KEYMAP=${RET##mac-usb-}
DI_KEYMAP=${DI_KEYMAP##-latin1}

This bug is simply reproducible by installing xorg in a fresh chroot (and it
affects make-live so we noticed it).

Can you try the newest version of the glint driver, 1:1.1.1-3, which is
currently in unstable? You'll need the new x server as well. I believe this
contains an upstream fix for your problem. Thank you!

Is this a bug in xfonts-base?

I've just uploaded a new set of xfonts* packages with fixes from Eugene

wait for them to be pushed to your mirror. Could you install those and let
us know if this bug can be closed? Thanks!

Working on this. I think we can do this. I'd be nice to get any good fix to

In the meantime, Option XAANoOffscreenPixmaps should help with XAA.

  31_fedora_no_move_damage.patch
  32_fedora_dont_backfill_bg_none.patch

These break X semantics, and according to Thierry they don't make much

I'm leaning towards thinking it's patch #30 that makes the big difference. But
I haven't rebuilt X to confirm that yet.

Bug#379480: X Key/Mouse Freeze might be time/clock based

2006-09-30 Thread hendrik
On Sat, Sep 30, 2006 at 03:34:48PM -0600, Berg, Michael wrote:
Several of my friends and I have been having similar problems - X
 keyboard/mouse input occasionally freezing.

The problem has been encountered on both i386 and AMD64 systems, with both
nvidia and ati video cards, with both free and proprietary drivers.

The interesting thing is that most of our systems would freeze at almost
the exact same time each time it happened (once every few months). It
happened again today, and three of our systems (in various locations around
the city and state) all froze up during the same 1-2 minute period.

Mine freezes within minutes.

It's chrony I'm using, which, I believe, doesn't set the clock backward,
but adjusts the speed of the clock instead. Maybe that has the same
effect as adusting it more often, hence minutes instead of months?

 2. Execute the date command and then adjust the time back slightly (about 2
minutes backward is used in this example).

   # date
   Sat Sep 30 15:02:22 MDT 2006

   # date -s 'Sat Sep 30 15:00:00 MDT 2006'

Every time I tried this, X keyboard and mouse input would freeze up a few
seconds later. Desktop applets like the system clock, CPU monitor, network
activity, etc would all still be actively displaying (so the screen is
still updating), but I would be unable to mouse between windows, hot-key
between windows, type into the currently focused xterm, Ctrl-Alt-backspace
to kill X, or Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a terminal window.

Regulas ASCII keyboard characters still work oafter a freeze -- if I
happen to be in a shell at the time the mouse freezes, I can still go on
merrily entering commands. But I'd better not try to start any commands
that create windows!

ssh'ing in from another computer and then stopping gdm and/or X would allow
me to recover, restart X and run other test scenarios.

Yes, this true for me, too, except that it's all so slow that ssh times
out during login. But if I'm alreaddy ssh'd in, I can do things --
slowly. Keystroke echo can take a minute!

Can those of you who are also having this problem try the clock adjustment
test above and see if you have the same results?

Will try and report results.

How many of you who are experiencing the problem are running NTP
 synchronization software on your system?

Just chrony.

I should also note that I could adjust the clock forward as much as I
wanted with no adverse effects (I had test cases of moving forward a few
seconds, a few minutes, a few hours, and almost an entire day), but any
adjustment of the clock backward from its current setting triggered the
 problem.

I'm running openbox, and my friends were both running GNOME (one on top of
openbox and one on top of metacity).

running icewm.

 Michael

Bug: xserver-xorg-video-ati does not work with dual output Radeon X700

2006-09-30 Thread bobby jafari
Hi All,

I am a newbie with debian and wish to report a bug. I hope this is the
right place to do so. I tried to do it throug the bug reporting tool
that comes with the gnome desktop but it didn't have the xserver as an
option.

The driver xserver-xorg-video-ati does not work with X700 ati radeon
dual output Video cards.

The error message from /var/log/Xorg.0.log is:

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(II) ATI: Candidate Device section ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon
X700 (RV410).
(WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 1:0:0 could not be detected!
(WW) ATI: PCI Mach64 in slot 1:0:1 could not be detected!
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Changing the driver to VESA will however get the Xserver up.
Regards,
Bobby

This is working for me in the current version (1.1.1-9). I'm a very happy
camper again.
