Bug#212347: en_US.UTF-8 compositions missing in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose

2007-01-17 Thread Jan Pfeifer
hi Julien,

cool, I had already forgotten about it :)

so I'm now running Ubuntu, with X-org. But I suppose ubuntu and debian share
the xlibs files, so I went ahead and tested it here:

so I just typed (using compose):

ÁÂÀÄÃáâàäã
ÉÊÈË éêèë
ÓÔÒÖÕóôòöõ
ÚÛÙÜŨúûùüũ
ÍÎÌÏĨíîìïĩ

and they all seem to be working perfect.

If the ubuntu installation can be used as a reference, pls move ahead and close
the bug.

thanks :)

Hi Jan,

about 3 years ago you reported this bug against the Debian xlibs

As far as I can see in the current Compose file for en_US.UTF-8, most
accented latin letters can be typed with .
Are there still exceptions which you'd like to have fixed?
If not I'll close this bug.

As of last week, X still didn't work on that machine.

Thanks for the followup. I wish I could report a more positive result.

Version: 2:1.0.0-2

Hi,

as far as I can see, this bug has been fixed in libx11 version
2:1.0.0-2, which was uploaded to experimental in february last year.
Feel free to follow up if this is still not fixed for you.

Here is the changelog entry for that version:
libx11 (2:1.0.0-2) experimental; urgency=low

  [ David Nusinow ]
  * Properly install all the contents of /usr/lib/X11/locale. Thanks Zephenia
E. Hull.
  * Provide versioned build-depends on the X libs. Thanks Kurt Roeckx.
(closes: #354161)
  * Provide libx11-dev dependencies on libxdmcp-dev.
Thanks Kurt Roeckx. (closes: #354167)
  * Add a bunch of depends to libx11-dev from the monolith. Thanks Eugene
Konev for the pointer.
  * Add 001_no_xkb_in_pc_file.diff because we don't need x11proto-input-dev.
Thanks Eugene Konev.

  [ Eugene Konev ]
  * Move locale data in separate libx11-data package. Make libx11-6 depend
on it.
  * libx11-6.install.in? Huh? Replaced with libx11-6.install
  * Add real binary-indep.
  * Add patches from 6.9:
- 002_arm_abi_brain_damage.diff
- 003_recognize_glibc_2.3.2_locale_names.diff
- 004_en_US.UTF-8_Compose_fix_Unicode_plane_1.diff
- 005_Compose_fix_latin1_UTF8.diff
- 006_tailor_pt_BR.UTF-8_Compose.diff
- 007_iso8859-15_Compose_fix.diff
- 008_remove_ko_Compose.diff
- 009_iso8859-15_Compose_Eurosign.diff
- 012_ru_RU_UTF-8_XLC_LOCALE.diff
  * Adjust Pre-depends for libx11-6. Remove depends on x11-common from
libx11-dbg and libx11-dev as they depend on libx11-6 anyway.
  * Run dh_install with --fail-missing if there is checkinstall in
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS
  * Resurrect libx11-6.post{inst,rm}.in. Add genscripts to build target's
dependencies.
  * Fix libx11-6.preinst.in to include shelllib and define appropriate vars.
  * Grab fixes for manpages section from Xorg CVS
- 010_manpages_fix.diff
  * Grab ubuntu patch to support XLOCALELIBDIR separate from XLOCALEDIR
- 011_stolen_from_ubuntu_xlocalelibdir.diff
  * Add --enable-loadable-i18n to confflags.
  * Use new xsfbs-autoreconf.mk to do autoreconfing.

Bug#370181: Monitor Display Size Incorrect

2007-01-17 Thread Paul Kranz
Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the inquiry. I modified XF86Config-4 by using some help I got from
Linux-on-laptops.com. I saved a copy of the original file generated by the
installer, if you'd like to see it. The problem actually occurred with a Sarge
installation.

I'm running Sarge exclusively now and have been for about six months with no
problems. I never been able to get either of two HP printers to print
anything other than simple text, however.

Bug#394821: mga_drv unresolved symbols after 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge2 upgrade

2007-01-17 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

The unresolved symbol errors that you get with the free mga driver looks
strange. I wonder whether you installed some non-official librairies
that could be incompatible with the X server. You should try to
reinstall the packages that contain the following files:
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libspeedo.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/mga_drv.o
And eventually check that all other packages got installed fine by the
upgrade. Reinstall the whole bunch of X packages might help too. I know
that this looks like what you've done previously, but I'd rather be sure
that everything is installed fine since there is no reason for libraries
to break like this on your machine without breaking anywhere else.

In debian 3.1 (and older versions) xwindows system installation menius
when choosing video card driver, there is no radeon driver choice

2007-01-17 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Jason,

Did you manage to get X back to work since you reported this bug 4 month
ago? You could eventually try Xorg 7.1 currently in testing. But it is
strange that this machine breaks with sarge r3 while it worked with r2.

I do not use XFree86 anymore, because I have switched to X.org. Maybe you

Package: xserver-xfree86

[debconf] Simplified monitor selection can result in
driver settings which overclock the monitor, and the monitor
will not turn on.

I have been setting up debian testing on an older 19 inch
monitor with the 3dfx driver (tdfx).

If I used the simplified monitor setup, and report that
I have a 19-20 inch monitor, but only use display modes
to 1280x1024, the XF86Config-4 file will allow
Hsync from 30-160 and Vsync from 50-150 (necessary for
the 2000x1500 resolution, I guess). As a result,
the automatic mode selection will choose Hsync and Vsync
which exceed my monitor's capabilities in 1280x1024 mode.

This happens in both of the simplified monitor setup
modes (Simple and Medium).

In advanced mode I could force Vsync and Hsync to reasonable
values for my monitor, and everything came up.

I think I was led astray by the simplified setup -- In
particular, the max vsync rate > 85 is surprizing to
me. The simplified setups should look at the maximum
requested resolution, and reduce default Hsync and Vsync
ranges.

Subject: gdm doesn't start with sarge installation
Package: gdm
Version: 2.8.0.6-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

*** Please type your report below this line ***
I have successfully installed Etch from the testing installation CD.
However when I go to install Sarge from it's install CD the same way I
installed Etch gdm will not start up, instead you get a fuzzy screen. I have
installed it three times with the same result each time. The screen after being
fuzzy for a minute sends me to a command promp and says to file a bug report so
I am.

How to see the bug:
1. Find a HP Pavilion 7845 computer.
2. Install Sarge from the network installation CD.
3. Only check desktop environment option.
4. Always say autodetect for hardware.

Bug#407371: xorg: Video playback problem (DirectDraw) under Wine

2007-01-17 Thread Russell Weatherburn
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.1.0-10
Severity: normal

I have been using Mpeg2Schnitt under Wine (it's a Windows executable,
and doen't have any equivalent under Linux that I can find...)
to edit .m2v and .mp2 files which were recorded from FTA Digital TV,
then demuxed by ProjectX for some time now.

After upgrading from XFree86 to Xorg, in preparation to upgrading to
Etch and to hopefully solve some other issues I was having, I noted
that there was an issue with not being able to view the video output
using the Mpeg2Schitt program.

Thinking it was the Mpeg2Schnitt program at fault, I upgraded it. No
change. The other thought was that it could be the .m2v file itself,
however trying other .m2v files show the same problem. Trying new
versions of Wine makes no difference.

I have tested using the same program (indeed, the whole same
.wine/fake_windows information for Wine) under a clean Sarge
installation in VMWare, and this problem does not occur. I can only
conclude that it is somewhere in Xorg that the issue lies.

The stderr output from the wine execution is shown below:

(Note: the first line is irrelevant to this bug report; it is only shown

I cannot say, havent used X on Linux in a long time. So the bug might be
fixed or still persists. However since the error description is quite
specific, it should be possible to review if it is changed. And I really
suspect that is fixed now...

Package: xserver-xfree86

An "apt-get upgrade" about 12 hours ago broke my mousewheel.
Furthermore the mouse speed has decreased. (several (all?)
X-server-related packages were updated)

The problem is that /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file was overwritten/changed.
Recovering the old XF86Config-4 from a backup and exchanging it with
the new one restored the accustomed mouse function. Screen resultion,
driver (ati) haven't been altered (only the mouse was the problem -
even the keyboard stayed at "102")

Let me know if you need the XF86Config-4 before and after, and any
additional info I can't imagine now.

BTW, on June 3rd, I changed /etc/apt/sources.list from "testing" to "sarge".

Best regards,
Hannes.

Closing since reconfiguring Xorg renames the old config file before

Ok I see. Unless somebody comes with a good reason to rename
/dev/apm_bios (apart from using your devfs rules in udev for backward
compatibility), I guess this will endup being tagged as wontfix :/

With the removal of devfs, the problem still exists, but can probably
now be considered a non-problem, given that devfs users have had to
"upgrade" to udev (that's what I did). However, the naming rules
themselves are not tied to devfs; you can use them with udev, for
example, or with static devices, and so I think the "devfs-style"
device name should be supported by the code which opens apm_bios. At
the very least, device names should not be hardcoded; a configuration
option would be useful here.

I just saw that you reported the same bug against
xserver-xorg-input-palmax in #392498 and posted a clean patch there. We
won't fix xserver-xfree86 anymore. So let's just close this bug and keep
working on the other one. From what I see at:

http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/driver/xf86-input-palmax.git;a=summary
upstream did not change since the one you have (Xorg 7.0/Palmax
1.0.0.5). So I don't expect the bug to be fixed in 7.1/1.1.0. So I guess
we should apply your patch. I forwarded the bug and patch upstream at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9690. We'll see what happens.

The vertical refresh range question says:
"Please enter either a comma-separated list of discrete values (for
fixed-frequency displays), or a pair of values separated by a dash
(all modern CRT's). This information should be available in your

But if I enter "60, 75" "60 , 75" or "60,75" (valid values for my
monitor) I get the error text that says:
"Please enter a comma-separated list of ranges or values.

Bug#407342: postinst fails when run within d-i

2007-01-17 Thread Joey Hess
Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.0.5-1
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i

I'd like to include xdm in the xfce task, but I can't since it fails as
follows:

Warning: Fake start-stop-daemon called, doing nothing.
cat: /var/run/xdm.pid: No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing xdm (--configure);
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

This is due to the following code:

# Don't start the daemon if it's already running...
if start-stop-daemon --stop --quiet --signal 0 --pid /var/run/xdm.pid \
 --name $(basename $DAEMON) ; then
  # Note our refusal to start the daemon if we were supposed to start it.
  [ -n "$NOSTART" ] || DENYSTART=yes
DENIAL_REASON="xdm is already running at pid $(cat /var/run/xdm.pid)"

The fake start-stop-daemon that d-i uses, like the one debootstrap uses,
always returns true, so this test doesn't work. (This could be considered
a bug in debian-installer-utils..)

It seems to me that the easiest fix for this is to not check for a running
xdm if xdm is being freshly installed ($1 = install, $2 = "").

Thanks for maintaining Debian's xserver-xfree86
package.

It's important.

X can be made to crash by doing the following:

1.) run gimp

2.) use your mouse to select

xtns->Script-Fu->Logos->Basic 1

3.) click on "FONT"

4.) Choose Font Size (pixels) : 500

5.) Choose Font : arial

6.) Click on "OK" in the "Script-Fu Font Selection" window

7.) Click on "OK" in the "Script-Fu: Logos/Basic 1" window

8.) (kaboom)

9.) Look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log.old for

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

It crashed every time I tried, even with the "nv"
driver.

Thanks,
Kingsley

Hi,

About 2 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding the X
server not detecting your hardware well or so.
Did you reproduce this problem recently? If not, I will close this bug
in the next weeks.

Thanks,
Brice

Since my apt-get upgrade yesterday, X refuses to start with the message:

*** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not
*** be the reason for the server aborting.

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

There were some message about symbols that couldn't be found. These had
to do with GLCore and speedo. I reinstalled xserver-common and
xserver-xfree86 and now these messages are gone, but X still refuses to
start.

(pci chip id is 1106:3118, VIA/S3 Unichrome Pro VGA Adapter [3118] )

Hi, as per the Subject, the savage driver doesn't ask the monitor about
its capabilities via DDC, leading to the X server defaulting to 75 dpi,
and showing very small fonts.

I have observed this behaviour on multiple on-board GFX machines, and
even switching to the 'vesa' generic driver shows the expected results in
the XFree86.0.log, and set the display DPI to 86x84 for a 15" TFT
display.

I can confirm that similar machines using the 'via' driver, and another
machine using 'nv' driver get the DDC info correctly - this problem seems
to be local to the 'savage' driver.

I rarely use that machine anymore, but if I recall correctly I did
about six months ago, and had to reapply the fix when I upgraded X.
It's probably easier to check the code to see if the logic error is
still there (not processing a packet unless *more* data is present).
I can recheck it if you want, but not today.

I am currently not using the VESA driver on any of my machines, so I cant

Bug#394058: xserver-xorg-core: X mouse manpage is in section 4x

2007-01-17 Thread Phil Endecott
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 1:1.0.2-9
Followup-For: Bug #394058

I was going to report the same issue.

"mouse(4)" is a man page describing the pinout and protocol used by
serial mice. The page relevent to the X mouse driver is "mouse(4x)"
which you can view using "man 4x mouse".

The xorg.conf manpage SEE-ALSO section should be updated to refer
to "mouse(4x)" rather than "mouse(4)". The same may be true of the
other driver pages referred to there.

Appologies if this has been fixed recently. I'm not keen to upgrade
my X server just to see if a man page typo has been fixed!

Phil.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1
Severity: serious
Justification: Breaks functionality on upgrade

Following upgrade from Woody, 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86'
silently becomes a no-op because no /var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
file exists. This causes an unexpected regression in behaviour from
Woody (which predates 4.2.1-11) which is only documented in XF86Config-4
as generated _after_ you fix that problem. I ran into this after my
PS/2 mouse broke under GPM+X and I needed to reconfigure it.

The issue is really that 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' does not
tell you that it is not controlling XF86Config-4 and even worse refuses
to create a new copy if you delete the file leaving the average user at
a loss to fix their system. There are a slew of bugs arising from just
this scenario in the BTS. The information is implicitly there in the
NEWS.Debian.gz but probably needs to be documented clearly in the
Release Notes.

Note: the problem occurred on another machine so the info below is
somewhat misleading.

You can close this bug. I tested some drivers from different sources and i
found one that is working almost without problems (i can not switch to text
mode using X). Unfortunatelly i don't remember where i download this driver
from.
I also didn't tested new xorg drivers which may also work.
Best regards,
Jakub

Hello Brice,
please close the bug. I do not have the hardware available anymore and I did
not reproduce it on other hardware or newer X versions.

Regards,
Philipp

Hi :)

I admit I've not tried - the NFS root image running on the call
centre machines has not changed in over a year, and we're happy with
the performance of the 'vesa' driver, so whilst this bug may still be
present, I don't have the resources to test it.

To that end, you might as well close it, and if it becomes an issue in
future, I'll open a new bug and reference this old one.

Cheers,
Gavin.

Bug#406608: libsm6: ICE socket disappears after a suspend-to-ram, delay when starting session-aware apps

2007-01-17 Thread Alexis Sukrieh

David Nusinow wrote:

No, the /tmp dir is not wiped out, only the /tmp/.ICE-unix socket is
missing.

The strange thing is that it doesn't happen everytime I suspend to ram
the laptop.

Bug#363910: please include vars.kfreebsd-i386 and vars.kfreebsd-amd64 for next xorg upload

2007-01-17 Thread Petr Salinger

found 363910 1:7.1.0-11
thanks

Please, could you just include vars.kfreebsd-i386 and vars.kfreebsd-amd64
for next upload. I do not expect upload with just vars.kfreebsd-i386 and
vars.kfreebsd-amd64 added, on the other hand, is there any reason to not
include them with some debconf translation or another fix ?

Adding vars.kfreebsd-* into debian/scripts/ is really non-invasive wrt
release architectures.

Many thanks

Petr
