Bug#355125: i810 X server dies with Active ring not flushed error

2007-07-17 Thread Eric
I installed the version you mentioned right away, it ran fine up until today,
when it crashed again.

Ok, thanks. I see you are running a regular Debian 2.6.18 kernel with
xserver-xorg-core 1.3. If you didn't already try, you could possibly try
 xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.0.0-5 currently in experimental, but I
don't really expect much. There are very few i810 chipsets out there, so
 it's unlikely to be fixed.

 https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1794 seems to talk about
the same problem, with 2.6.8 or .9 kernels. I'll post a comment there.

I installed debian testing using the latest weekly netinst iso, only the
base system. I then updated the system, and then upgraded to unstable. I
then tried to install xserver-xorg. I wanted to install xfce at the end.

Unstable went into a loop. The dialogue looks like this:

A null entry is not permitted for this value.
Ok

When I hit Ok, it goes back to the same dialogue.

This bug makes xserver-xorg uninstallable, hence unusable.

Thank you.

I was able to configure using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but when I chose
tdfx as my driver, xorg didn't start. It works with fbdev, though with fbdev my
colors are funky, as people in photos turn blue.
Unfortunately, the latest log file shows that the server works fine. I can send
a copy of the non-working file as well.

Subject: xserver-xorg: Matrox driver doesn't have Xvideo for Millennium II;
patch available
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-3
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***
There is a patch for the mga driver to support XVideo extension on
Matrox Millennium II cards (both PCI and AGP versions). I just got an
AGP one, and noticed that I didn't have the XVideo extension.

The patch is against XFree86 4.2.0. Previous discussion was here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2004/04/msg00391.html . You asked for
a unified-diff version of the patch, so first I'm making a unified-diff
patch against XFree86 4.2.0. That file (and a little more info) is
available here:

http://paulproteus.acm.jhu.edu/mga-x/

I also made a patch against the current Debian x.org package. That is
also available at the above URL. He offers the whole mga_video.c file
for download; it looks like my patch against X.org reverts some good
stuff like endianness fixes. Can I ask you to clean that up? You
surely know X better than I do.

Read the readme.txt to see how I generated the files; make sure I didn't
doo anything too dumb.

Thanks! Hopefully we can get this included :-).

When I run X, I see a display that has a central section that looks
more-or-less normal, surrounded by a band of weirdness. If I tell
Xserver-xorg to use the vesa driver, all works more or less.

My laptop uses a Cirrus logic GD7548
With Xfree86 I used to use the svga driver.

The automatic upgrade from Xfree86 wrote a config file that attempted
to use the Cirrus driver.

Hello,
after searching a lot, I finally found the the X.Org savage driver
doesn't mix well with the kernel savagefb, even with
Option UseFBDev true

Typical symptoms are that each text appears garbled at the top of the
screen. After a few 10s of second the machine hang. Running without
savagefb cure this.

Maybe this should be documented somewhere, during the installation
procedure ?

Best regards

Pascal Dupuis

The aiptek input driver is affected by a known bug that is capable to
freeze gtk applications.

Some gtk applications, as gimp, thinks the tablet is still in use and
doesn't give back control to mouse.

I suggest you to look at this link:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detailaid=1117415group_id=75377atid=543737

The cvs release of this driver probably isn't affected by this bug and
it also fix xserver's crashes which occurs when the user switch to a virtual
terminal.

Please consider to test it in the next release.

Greetings.

I think I have the same problem of corruption than #320328, but on a
Matrox MGA G200 AGP.
I did not experience this before upgrading Xorg from 6.8.2 to 6.9.0.

The calcomp_drv.o tablet driver as a timeout setting that is too short.
This way, it can't detect a HP A4356A tablet.

The Author of calcomp_drv.o knows of this problem and can surely
supply a patch...

To shorten the logs:

When I start xorg in the highest resolution configured by the automatic
setup which is 1280x1024 I get a distorted display (vertical stripes).
Using the next lower resolution (1152x864) fixes this issue.

It *looks* if it *might* kill my hardware, not sure if it really can :)

With xfree86, Before upgrading to the xorg packages (those available at
http://people.debian.org/~nobse/xorg-x11) only software rendering
was working on my pc. I upgraded in hope to get 3d acceleration for
my video card (SiS730) but now every opengl application seems to run
fine but only shows a black window.
-glxgears shows me some frame rates, but no gears
-I could actually play armagetron if I were able to play it blind, the
game starts, I can hear the sounds but the window is empty

I am including the results of the test mentioned on Debian X Window System FAQ

I list below the commands I tried and the output
$LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose; export LIBGL_DEBUG; glxgears
libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 0.7.0 sis (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/sis_dri.so

an empty window appeared on the screen

345 frames in 5.0 seconds = 69.000 FPS

this time (forcing sw rendering) the window showed the revolving gears

the problem was not solved by commenting out the Load dri line from
xorg.conf but that's probably because (according to /var/log/Xorg.0.log)
dri was loaded anyway.

X worked fine until I rebooted after running today's etch upgrade,
and now it won't start. The Xorg.0.log gives details, but basically
we get an INVALID MEM ALLOCATION warning, and later a message to the
effect that xf86RegisterResources() found resource conflicts. The two
may or may not be related.

Graphics chip: nVidia 6800
Graphics memory: 128 MB
Driver: nv

I use an X server with 1600x1200 pixels on vt7, 85 Hz as first display.
Then I have started another X server on vt8 with:

startx -display :1 -- :1 -depth 16 -nolisten tcp -verbose 5 -logverbose
5

And I typed a command to initiate scrolling action into xterm on vt8:

$ cd ~
$ ls -R

After switching back (CTRL-ALT-F7) and forth (CTRL-ALT-F8) a few times,
the second X server could not restore the screen (see below).
With the scrolling action above, it can be reproduced at once.

The first screen (desktop) could be restored every time, no problem
here.

Effect:

Black screen, grey line strokes (about 20 pixels wide) are drawn
horizontally, with a big offset left black. Visual appearance: Columns
full of line strokes, about every tenth line, alternating pattern:
full - dotted (4 dots).
Smooth scrolling of the whole screen upwards, as if it is a corrupted
font
which is drawn continuously.

Other effects:

Lower part of the screen blue, blue line strokes (full and dotted) are
drawn.

No black background, a pattern is drawn (colors not changing
horizontally per
block), moving down row per row.

With nvidia driver 1.0.8178: same effect.

With Xorg 6.8.2/nvidia 1.0.8178: no problems. It is a regression.

Killing the above process with CTRL-C gives:

++
xterm: fatal IO error 32 (Broken pipe) or KillClient on X server :1.0

waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/ refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.

After upgrading xserver-xorg, I lost my Meta modifier on the windows
key. Investigating the problem I found that the XKBOptions was erased
by the upgrade, even if it was defined in debconf before (and it was
no more defined after upgrade).

i just bootstrapped a fresh debian sid installation and installed
x-window-system-core,which also installs xserver-org. that showed me
always the same dialog Empty Value not allowed here. Empty Value.
(sorry i did not write don't the exact text,so may be different). after
looking at the postint script and a bit of experimentating i changed the
value of xserver-xorg/config/monitor/default-identifier to a non-empty
string, and after that it worked. i don't know if that was the problem or
if i did something different,too.

The scroll wheel on my Logitech MX518 stopped working after I just upgraded
the X11 related files (on Debian unstabled). Yesterday, the scroll wheel
worked fine. Moving the scroll wheel moved window content up and down like
it's supposed to. Now, moving the scroll wheel has no effect.

It's a 10 button mouse, and I have

This may be a problem with gpm, I'm not sure. I usually use gpm in repeater
mode (-Rmsc) with the MouseSystems
protocol. Specifically,

Section InputDevice
  Identifier Mouse0
  Driver mouse
  Option Device /dev/gpmdata
  Option Protocol MouseSystems
  Option Resolution 300
EndSection

and gpm config is:

device=/dev/input/mice
responsiveness=
repeat_type=msc
type=imps2
append=''
sample_rate=

I did an apt-get dist-upgrade last night (for the first time in a few days),
which I believe included an X upgrade.
I'm not sure if it included a gpm upgrade.

When I started the machine this morning, at X startup the mouse cursor started
at the middle of the screen as usual,
but as soon as I moved it, it would jump to the right edge, then scroll either
up or down and remain stuck in the
bottom-right or top-right corner.

I can work around this by disabling gpm and switching my config to:

Section InputDevice
  Identifier Mouse0
  Driver mouse
  Option Device /dev/input/mice
  Option Protocol Auto
  Option Resolution 300
EndSection

I tried to switch the repeating protocol to ms (microsoft) mode gave the same
result as msc.

I'm happy to provide any further information.

This is on a Mac PowerBook G4, kernel 2.6.15, though I wouldn't think this
problem would be platform-specific :)

Thanks very much,
dustin.

Bug#403969: tdfx crashes X with AIGLX but without (working) libglide3

2007-07-17 Thread Brice Goglin
Brice Goglin wrote:
Well, I am glad that it works but the bug was about a crash when
 libglide3 is not installed :)
Could you remove libglide3 and see what happens?

Hi Rob,

Did you have a chance to try after removing libglide3 so that we know
whether the original bug is fixed or not? If you don't care anymore,
just let me know, I'll close the bug with an invitation to reopen in
case anybody ever reproduces.

Bug#347149: gnome-control-center: U.S. English keyboard options are confusing

2007-07-17 Thread Sven Arvidsson
gnome-keyboard-properties includes the following five options for keyboard
 layout (among others):

 - U.S. English
   - International (with dead keys)
 - U.S. English w/ dead keys
 - U.S. English w/ ISO9995-3
   - Eliminate dead keys

I don't really have any idea how these differ; how is U.S. English
International (with dead keys) different from U.S. English w/ dead
keys? Does U.S. English w/ ISO9995-3 have dead keys? Why are these
five options grouped in three sections, instead of together in one?

Also, I know what dead keys are, but if I didn't, Gnome wouldn't tell me
(although Google will). I don't know what ISO9995-3 is, and in this case,
 Google is no help either.

A picture of the keyboard is displayed with each option, but it appears
to be the same, giving no basis for choosing one layout over another.

It would be very helpful if someone who understands how these keyboard
layouts differ renamed them in Gnome to make the choices clear. It
would also be helpful if Gnome included an explanation of dead keys.

Hi,

This bug report has been forwarded to the upstream developers. Upstream
has pointed out that the descriptions have been cleared up, and the
terminology should be familiar to those who need it;

Package: libx11-6
Version: 2:1.0.3-7
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

After upgrading libx11-6 to the security update as in version 1.0.3-7
made opera segfault every time I tried to start it. Downgrading to
version 1.0.3-6 fixes it.

Yes, I know that opera isn't open source, but I marked this bug critical
because if the patch for the security fix causes opera to segfault,
something looks _fishy_ with this patch and could propably cause other
applications to break, too. But feel free to downgrade the severity of
this bug, if you think the problem is inside opera.

I will probably fill a bugreport for opera, too, which includes a link
to this bugreport.

What do you do exactly to put the system to sleep? (please send that bash
script) Also, as Josselin asked, please provide a log from a crashing X

Hi,

the plan is to wait for
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11390 to be fixed upstream
(this is what breaks java and possibly other proprietary apps), and
upload very soon after that. This might take some time though, as there
is no trivial fix.

Oh, it does! I did not test it extensively, but most things look OK now.
It would be awesome if I did no need to add an aditional option, so I
don't know if it is best to just close the bug or turn it into a
wishlist for auto-configuration (or bug fix, if needing that is indeed a
 bug).

It is well-known that this option (or switching to EXA instead of XAA)
is important for compositing manager such as Compiz or Beryl (they have
very different requirement over the X server than regular
non-composiiting window manager). For instance, it's described in
/usr/share/doc/compiz/README.Debian and at http://wiki.debian.org/Compiz

Hello,

while 2.1.2-1 apparently fixes bug 389404 + 389794, xorgs hangs
on logout when used with this driver. KDE applications are closed,
the desktop vanishes, the mousepointer vanishes and then it hangs.

No Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and not Ctrl-Alt-F1 yields any result. The machine
is still pingable.

This hang only happens on regular logout. Stopping xorg with
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace still seems to work.

After I log out from a X session, the virtual consoles are unusable. Either I
see coloured lines (same colours
as my desktop background) or it's all black. The same happens when I run startx
from a console and log out from X
again.

If I instead switch to a console and run /etc/init.d/gdm stop, they are fine.
But if I switch to a console and
run sleep 10; kill pid of x-session-manager and then switch back to X
before the killing, they go bad.

So it seems to me they get corrupted if I am on the X screen when X goes down.
If I am on a console when X goes
down, there are no problems.

(I have also tested with savage git from 20070512, same same)
