Bug#208683: Life is a great surprise. I don't see why death should not be an even greater one.

2007-11-02 Thread Lilian Robertson
Have at you!
The fox has many tricks. The hedgehog has but one. But that is the best of all.
And gain is gain, however small.
He who waits upon fortune is never sure of dinner.

Bug#443122: xserver-xorg-video-ati: dualhead setup not possible with xrandr1.2

2007-11-02 Thread Andreas Pakulat
On Mittwoch, 19. September 2007, Brice Goglin wrote:
 Andreas Pakulat wrote:
One thing I just noticed though: x11-utils changelog doesn't
mention xrandr 1.2.2 it only mentions 1.2.0, so may I have a

 x11-xserver-utils (7.2-2) experimental; urgency=low

   * Add xrandr 1.2.2.

You probably have 7.3+1, right? So it should be fine.

Ok, I tried again with the latest unstable Xorg and using the
experimental ati driver package.

XRandR now kind of works, that is if I start up a plain xterm with the
attached xorg.conf I do get a 3360x1050 desktop.

A few problems remain

- the dpi setting seems to be set wrongly, I've got a 332x205 laptop
display (mm) and a 365x275 mm CRT. And xorg sets 96dpi and xrandr tells
me that the screen size is actually 888x220 mmm??? Right would be
something like 130dpi

- I couldn't get a virtual desktop of 3080x1050 with a modeline of
1400x1050 for the CRT, X11 always created a 3360x1050 virtual desktop,
i.e. double the size of the lvds

- most importantly: I can't start either XFC4 or KDE3 session from that
xterm or from kdm. As soon as they're up and running the 2nd head is
switched off and when I set a mode on it again and then use

xrandr --output VGA-0 --left-of LVDS

to put it on the left side of the lvds, but that just makes the whole
screen go blank :( Maybe this is a xfce/kde issue?

I'd appreciate any input on any of the three.

Andreas

Bug#449039: xserver-xorg: X slows down and finally crash with too many remote clients

2007-11-02 Thread Alberto Marmodoro
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+3
Severity: normal

I'm experiencing sudden crashes of X when I have too many ( let's say
ten or so) different instances of an X client (Wolfram's Mathematica
6.0 for linux) running on different computers and redirected on my machine
through ssh tunneling.
Pointer and keyboard response, even on locally generated windows, become
sluggish immediately before the failure occurs. This does not seem to
have orgin in network unavailability issues.

If advised to do so, I'll proceed to try to reproduce and attach my
xsession-errors log.

Hope it helps. Thanks a lot,

Bug#448983: xserver-xorg-video-intel: ignores Modes and minimum VertRefresh to always choose [EMAIL PROTECTED] for Intel g33 chipset

2007-11-02 Thread Brice Goglin
Alan W. Irwin wrote:
You should adapt the xorg.conf man page to point to that to save this issue
coming up again and again for users like me who are familiar with X from
their last hardware buy (which was three years ago for me) and for X
newbies as well who know enough to check the xorg.conf man page.

The xorg.conf manpage is being updated, but it is pretty hard to cover
all cases since some driver are not RandR 1.2 aware yet while a couple
ones like the Intel one are already. So we basically need 2 different
manpages. Things be better when most drivers will have been ported to
RandR 1.2.

Here is what I tried. For that monitor there is a modeline that I have
 used
for years that gives much better results than [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have
recalculated that modeline with gtf to make sure all is well. Here are the
results as put in the Monitor section:

 # Calculated from gtf 920 687 87
 # 920x687 @ 87.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 62.90 kHz; pclk: 76.99 MHz
 Modeline 920x687_87.00 76.99 920 976 1072 1224 687 688 691 723
 -HSync +Vsync
 Option PreferredMode 920x687_87.00

But the 920x687_87.00 mode is not used on startx (back to the 60Hz
headache until I run xrandr), and the log only mentions 920x687 once (and
not as a possible mode) when it simply repeats the Option PreferredMode
 920x687_87.00.

You should add a Monitor section for both VGA and VGA-1 connectors to
make sure the modeline is applied to the right monitor. The HowTo
explains this too (you need a new monitor section and the corresponding
Option Monitor-VGA-1).

I then tried to add a modeline with xrandr, but that doesn't work either.
xrandr --help makes no mention of the --addmode option mentioned in the
HowTo, and indeed use of that option just results in a usage message.

At least the following works here (with x11-xserver-utils 7.3+1):
$ xrandr --newmode foo 100.19 1024 1088 1200 1376  768 769 772 809
-HSync +Vsync
$ xrandr --addmode VGA foo

In particular is there some confusion between VGA and VGA-1 that could be
causing the problem with adding modelines?

Possibly, yes.

 Option Monitor-VGA Sony CPD-15SF2

Monitor-VGA-1 might be better since the output of xrandr seems to say
that output VGA-1 is used here.

line in the device section of xorg.conf as recommended by the man page for
xorg.conf. I haven't tried VGA-1, in that line (since the intel man page
says to use VGA), but I wonder if the confusion between VGA and VGA-1 is
 causing a problem here?

VGA-1 is the name of the second VGA output when using the Intel driver.
VGA is the first one. These names are not well standardized across
drivers yet, I hope it will be better in the future.

There are some known problems like this one, I think it is being worked

 - I couldn't get a virtual desktop of 3080x1050 with a modeline of
1400x1050 for the CRT, X11 always created a 3360x1050 virtual desktop,

Not sure about this, maybe the ATI driver insists on using such a size.

If the latest upstream git of the driver does this, it might be worth
sending the corresponding config and log on bugzilla.freedesktop.org.

If starting with KDE/XFC works fine on both heads, I would guess that
KDE/XFC does some incorrect RandR 1.2 calls at startup. It is hard to
be sure. Did you check in the corresponding KDE/XFC configuration utilities?

Bug#446315: xserver-xorg-video-ati: crashes in R and Blender, and incomlete drawing of glut (opengl) wire objects

2007-11-02 Thread Alex Sheppard
Ok, still got some 'make depends' warnings referring to missing stddef.h
and stdarg.h files, but then it proceeded to compile without any obvious
problems.

Set environment variables and checked system was using 7.0.2 using glxinfo.

No discernable change in the blender crash bug.
Incomplete drawing problems persist too - i'll start a separate bug
report for that one.

Thanks for your help in helping me test this.

I guess i have some headers missing but i can't figure out what packages
i need to install to provide them. Error messages attached. Is there any
systematic lookup to find what package supplies what headers?

Feel free to point me to a helpful forum or something if you don't have
time to help in person.

You should be able to get all required header packages with:
  apt-get build-dep mesa

Also, if you feel like building mesa is too long, you can restrict the
list of drivers to build with something like:
  make linux-dri-x86 DRI_DIRS=r300

LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo will tell you which driver you need
(r300_dri.so if you have a r300).

Also, there is no real need to install the newly built lib. You can
keep them in the build tree and do:
  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=foo
  export LIBGL_DRIVERS_DIR=bar
with foo the path to the directory containing the new libGL.so, and
bar the path to the newly built DRI driver (r300_dri.so or so).

As earlier, use export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose to get some debugging
output from glxinfo and check that it is using the correct lib and
driver.

If you're lost/bored by all this, you might want to wait a couple
days/weeks until we upload mesa 7.0.2 into Debian :)

And the top of the cube is empty, there is no freedesktop.org logo.

Make sure the png plugin is loaded (before the cube plugin).

Shouldn't that be the default then?

Since cube isn't enabled by default, enabling png isn't required by
default either. We have another bug about having more plugins enabled
by default though.

What would be good is the automatic enabling of required plugins through
dependencies. These dependencies are known and visible in gconf, but the
gconf plugin doesn't use them. Hopefully compiz fusion will solve this
by bringing a user-friendly configurator in the near future.

Bug#449089: xserver-xorg: Auto detection fails on Thinkpad X31

2007-11-02 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+3
Severity: important

I've tested the auto detection code David asked for and ran into
a bug: When I start X.org with the auto-generated config (I use startx,
since I work on framebuffer console most of the time, on my notebook
X11 is really just a slim layer beyond MPlayer) the screen remains
black and the system doesn't take anymore input. (I can't switch
to tty2 e.g.)

The generated xorg.conf is included by the reportbug script,
my previous one can be found on http://www.inutil.org/jmm/xorg.conf

Please let me know if now need further information.

Did you experience this in the past? Any idea whether you upgraded
xserver-xorg-core or your driver when the problem started to occur?
For the record, nothing entered testing recently, since xserver 1.4
entered unstable about one month and a half ago.

Do you experience an actual crash (with a backtrace at the end of
Xorg.0.log)? Or just a freeze? If a crash, it would be very helpful
to catch a debugging backtrace with gdb after installing
xserver-xorg-core-dbg.

Bug#443122: xserver-xorg-video-ati: dualhead setup not possible with xrandr1.2

Right would be something like 130dpi

There are some known problems like this one, I think it is being
 worked on upstream.

Well, current git still shows this behaviour. I guess the problem is
that the driver doesn't read the EDID information properly or some
such.

  - I couldn't get a virtual desktop of 3080x1050 with a modeline of
1400x1050 for the CRT, X11 always created a 3360x1050 virtual

Not sure about this, maybe the ATI driver insists on using such a
 size.

I hope note, its quite annoying to have this 1680x1050 resolution on a
standard 4:3 CRT, the font is stretched quite a bit. Or does XRandR
support non-rectangular desktops, i.e. using 1680x1200 on the CRT and
1680x1050 on the LVDS?

If the latest upstream git of the driver does this, it might be worth
sending the corresponding config and log on bugzilla.freedesktop.org.

Yeah, latest git doesn't help here. I've filed an upstream bugreport
(not sure if I should reference it via forwarded-upstream):
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13067

  - most importantly: I can't start either XFC4 or KDE3 session from

whole screen go blank :( Maybe this is a xfce/kde issue?

If starting with KDE/XFC works fine on both heads, I would guess that
KDE/XFC does some incorrect RandR 1.2 calls at startup. It is hard to
be sure. Did you check in the corresponding KDE/XFC configuration
 utilities?

Not sure about xfce4, but the kde startup script actually stored the
layout of my screens and reloaded that using xrandr during session
startup. I'll file a bugreport about that with KDE.

Not sure what to do about this report, I can now at least use the new
Xorg with XRandR, though there's still the outstanding issues of
desktop-size and the dpi-settings...

If starting with KDE/XFC works fine on both heads, I would guess that
KDE/XFC does some incorrect RandR 1.2 calls at startup. It is hard to
be sure. Did you check in the corresponding KDE/XFC configuration
 utilities?

I'd like to add that the display doesn't always go blank when running
xrandr --left-of, sometimes it just creates garbage on the 2nd head.

Bugreport for that is here:

Bug#448983: xserver-xorg-video-intel: ignores Modes and minimum VertRefresh to always choose [EMAIL PROTECTED] for Intel g33 chipset

In particular is there some confusion between VGA and VGA-1 that could be

Worse yet, only the VGA one is documented in the intel man page. However,
when I tried

Option Monitor-VGA-1 Sony CPD-15SF2

encouraged by your remark above but contrary to the man page that (finally)
solved the issue of having a good refresh rate right from startx. That is,
my special modeline was finally recognized, and the PreferredMode option
worked for the first time. So I am a happy camper after a couple of days
struggle with this. Thanks very much for your help and especially the
informed guess above!

In sum, here are the two man page changes I recommend to avoid other users
(no matter how experienced) running into these sorts of RandR problems again
and again.

1. Put a reference to the HowTo in the xorg.conf man page at the first
mention of RandR. There is a lot of other RandR stuff in that man page now,
and the HowTo reference would make sense of it.

2. Change the intel man page so that it is clear VGA and VGA-1 are accepted
in the above Option command. Right now it says only VGA which screwed me
up completely with regard to adding a special modeline and using the
PreferredMode option.

Bug#449108: CVE-2007-3920: bypass password authentication

2007-11-02 Thread Steffen Joeris
Package: compiz
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

Hi

The following CVE[0] has been issued for gnome-screensaver and compiz.
gnome-screensaver is already fixed, but compiz also seems to be
affected.
Here is the text

CVE-2007-3920:

GNOME screensaver 2.20 in Ubuntu 7.10, when used with Compiz, does not
properly reserve input focus, which allows attackers with physical
access to take control of the session after entering an Alt-Tab
sequence, a related issue to CVE-2007-3069.

Please mention the CVE number in your changelog, if you fix this issue
by an upload.

Please also consider the patch below. It is fetched from the ubuntu
security update.

Cheers
Steffen
