Bug#457504: xserver-xorg: Autogeneration of xorg.conf failed
'reopen' may be inappropriate when a bug has been closed with a version;
you may need to use 'found' to remove fixed versions.
Bug#458076: Installing on fresh sid install ends up with empty xorg.conf
Bug#458361: xserver-xorg: cannot create xorg.conf on a clean install
Bug#458374: x11-common: dexconf exits with 10 when

Web page causes xorg to hog CPU

2007-12-31 Thread Lesley Binks
Hi

I hope I have come to the right place for this problem.

I checked on debian-users whether anyone else had this problem.

Please see post in that list started by myself today with the subject :

Iceweasel or Konqueror + Kdm/Xorg turned into a cpu hog?

Responses on the debian-user list shows that this behaviour occurs
with beta versions of Firefox as well. One Gentoo user claims it does
not happen on their system.

Whenever I access the web page http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/login , I
find the Xorg process consumes 92% of CPU.

This happens with both Iceweasel and Konqueror on my very standard,
regularly upraded etch installation.

firefox --version
Mozilla Iceweasel 2.0.0.10, Copyright (c) 1998 - 2007 mozilla.org

konqueror --version
Qt: 3.3.7
KDE: 3.5.5
Konqueror: 3.5.5

Xorg -version

X Window System Version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
Build Operating System: UNKNOWN
Current Operating System: Linux fawcett 2.6.18-5-486 #1 Mon Dec 24

Build Date: 04 September 2007
Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present

I have no idea at this stage whether this is a bug in X or in some
common part of Konqueror and Iceweasel and I have had a look through
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?maint=debian-x%40lists.debian.org#_1_1_5
to see if I could spot any bug report on this matter.

Has a bug been raised with this or are you aware this problem exists?

Please note I am not subscribed to the debian-x list so will not see
any replies that are posted there.

Regards

L.

Cache multiple fragment functions.
Prevents recreating fragment functions when unit/param changes because of
another plugin. If the other plugin paints fragment programs on only some
windows, the issue becomes more visible and a new fragment function needs
to be created possibly every frame without this patch.

Cache multiple fragment functions.
Prevents recreating fragment functions when unit/param changes because of
another plugin. If the other plugin paints fragment programs on only some
windows, the issue becomes more visible and a new fragment function needs
to be created possibly every frame without this patch.

Can you attach your full xorg log? IIRC, the the problem was related
to leaving gpio lines enabled after doing DDC, however, We should be
turning them off (have been for ages). It might also be related to
your mac card as the server default might not match your card's actual
layout.

The title bar part of the window frame is sometimes drawn
incorrectly. The rightmost half is gray and the buttons in the top

Just tested with 1:6.7.198~git20071223.ad3325f6-1, and it has only got
worse, I am afraid. The "load_detection" option makes absolutely no
difference, and now I cannot enable S-video at all:

yes - but TrueType fonts use a different interface, which apparently
does not have the same limitation (that's how xfd is able to display
the font). I might have noticed this earlier, but was unfamiliar
with fonts using codes past 0x.

yes. TrueType fonts might not have this limitation, but bitmap
fonts have only the XDrawString16 interface to write characters.
xterm is translating codes outside 0-0x to the replacement
character.

(I should investigate this further - thanks for the reminder)

Xterm is unable to display cyrilic characters before choosing 'Medium' font in menu.

2007-12-31 Thread Michael
Hello, everyone.

My problem is that xterm is don't displaying Russian characters before
I chose any font from Ctrl+RightClick menu. When pressing keys, cursor
moves but, space appears instead of a char. If I select for example
Ctrl+RightClick->Medium every char appears where it have to be.
I have faced with that problem on FreeBSD-8 too, btw.

I got exactly this issue a few days ago upon upgrading xorg on my
laptop. I got the same weird[0] resolution which made apps mess around,
and the same xrandr output.

After some fiddling, I "fixed" the problem by commenting out the
"VertRefresh" option in the "Monitor" section of xorg.conf. I'm not sure
whether the value was incorrect, or just having any value screwed it up.
This doesn't feel like a particularly elegant or permanent solution, but
I didn't have the time to investigate.

Hope this is slightly useful.

Roger Leigh wrote:

Dear Brice,

I'm afraid this bug is also present in the current package in
unstable. As soon as X starts, the monitor powers off. Killing X or
switching VT have no effect--it stays dead once it's off.

I have attached the Xorg logfile for both versions, but they are
identical. This seems to be due to the fact that I had to power off
the machine following the monitor turning off--by the fan noise, I
think it had locked up hard; I certainly couldn't make it reboot using
the keyboard. As a result, both are probably the logfile for
6.6.193-3.

I switched back to 6.6.193-3_powerpc.deb for the time being.

What can I do for you to track this down further?

Can you try xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.198~git20071223.ad3325f6-1
currently in experimental? If it doesn't help, please send corresponding
log as well as the xrandr output.

You might want to do that withou any xorg.conf at all (to be sure no
driver option is disturbing the default behavior).

Hmm, oh well, it's reopened now. :/

The set of available resolutions is a bit weird.

That's probably the problem here. Not sure you need to reopen the
upstream bug there. Alex is well aware that multi-head on Xpress does
not work very well yet.

Bug#411639: x11-common: Variables don't work outside of shells

2007-12-31 Thread Andre Colomb
Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.3+9
Followup-For: Bug #411639

Hey, this is a very good idea. I've been trying to figure out a clean way
to do this for quite some time.

However, with the current solution, I'm stuck: I updated the package,
created my .xsessionrc and put
export LC_TIME=en_DK
in there to have ISO 8601-dates everywhere. (German people still haven't
realized that this is the new standard for over 10 years now, and Ulrich
Drepper from Redhat apparently doesn't want to change the de_DE locale
accordingly... whatever!)

Anyway, I checked from inside an xterm shell (bash) if the variable was
actually set, and there it was. Starting e.g. Icedove from the shell
gave me the expected date format.

Starting Icedove from the Xfce Panel, however, still has the old date
format (en_US or C, whatever I set as system default). Is there maybe an
incompatibility with the xfce4-session script or am I missing something
else?

Regards, Andre

Yes, I've been studying the bugs and the mailing list to decide what to
do upstream. Running "xrandr --output VGA-0 --off" does fix this until X
restarts. I haven't bothered working out the exact xorg.conf changes to
fix this.

The problem arises because VGA output is now enabled by default even if
no external monitor is attached, and for some reason it has a resolution
of 1152x768 (not 1024x768). So, it's as if I'm using an external monitor
that's slightly bigger than the laptop screen, and the mouse carries on
past the right-hand edge of the display.

With metacity, windows still maximise to the correct size (but Fitts'
law is broken), and with simpler window managers (e.g. evilwm) the
windows maximise to the size of the virtual screen.

I suspect that either:
  * the commit that caused this needs to be backed out,
  * the default VGA resolution needs changing (hacky), or
  * external monitor detection for the Xpress cards needs to be
added as soon as possible.

I'll reopen the upstream bug report.

'reopen' may be inappropriate when a bug has been closed with a version;
you may need to use 'found' to remove fixed versions.
Bug reopened, originator not changed.

Bug#458432: xterm does not display Unicode glyphs beyond \uFFFF

2007-12-31 Thread Dr. Markus Waldeck

Package: xterm
Version: 229-1
Severity: normal

I tested the fonts in the package ttf-ancient-fonts.
The work fine with openoffice and eclipse.

But if I start an xterm with "-fa Akkadian" only glyphs
below \u are displayed.

Is this a limitation in xterm?

2007-12-31 Thread Brice Goglin

Tim Retout wrote:

Starting with xserver-xorg-video-ati version 1:6.7.196-1, windows are
maximising beyond the right of the screen, making it difficult to hit
scrollbars and so on. Version 1:6.7.195-2 worked correctly. Version
1:6.7.198~git20071223.ad3325f6-1 has not fixed it.

As well as the usual reportbug spam below, here is a diff between the
last working Xorg log and the first broken one. The screen physical size
has been set a bit larger, and 'VGA-0' is now using initial mode
1152x768.

The upstream bug report is marked as duplicate of another one which is fixed
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13231)

So if it's not fixed for you with git20071223.ad3325f6, you should
reopen it. Did you read/check what Alex Deucher said there?
