Bug#577769: xserver-xorg-core: ignores /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ in the presence of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

2010-04-14 Thread Stefan Lippers-Hollmann
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.7.6-2
Severity: important

Hi

If /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is in use, it does not augment the package
preconfiguration in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but totally ignores the
contents of /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ - thereby breaking essential
preconfiguration like 05-evdev.conf and killing keyboard/ mouse support
in X.

My system does not use a /etc/X11/xorg.conf anymore, but I nevertheless
need to configure my dual-screen setup for radeon through the attached
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-device.conf. With today's upload of
xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.3.2-5, evdev starts to depend on the (new)
preconfiguration in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/05-evdev.conf, but due to
the presence of my custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-device.conf,
xserver-xorg-core never attempts to load 05-evdev.conf (or 10-vmmouse.conf
for that matter).

$ LANG=C ls -al /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/:
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 14 12:30 .
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 Apr 9 14:44 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 354 Apr 9 14:48 20-device.conf

/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/:
total 20
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 14 12:01 .
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 Apr 11 03:07 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 946 Apr 13 18:02 05-evdev.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 102 Apr 13 18:16 10-vmmouse.conf

To temporarily unbreak my system, I've added a symlink for 05-evdev.conf in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but this would be very fragile in regards to future
evdev updates and/ or other packages switching to distribution defaults stored
in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/
ln -s ../../../usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/05-evdev.conf
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/05-evdev.conf

Regards
Stefan Lippers-Hollmann

Post scriptum: As an unrelated side note, I'd suggest adding
   /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*.conf and
ls -al /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ to the bug templates.

No, X didn't lose your data.

The X server crashes often randomly, leaving only the command-line
accessible till reboot. Whenever the crash happens, this is seen in
 the log.

The latest revision removed the udev configuration file for evdev and
created a new configuration file in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d
But this file is not read. The module evdev is not loaded and there is
no keyboard in X.
I copied the file 05-evdev.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and the keyboard
was back.

Bug#577769: xserver-xorg-core: ignores /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ in the presence of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

If /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is in use, it does not augment the package
preconfiguration in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but totally ignores the
contents of /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ - thereby breaking essential
preconfiguration like 05-evdev.conf and killing keyboard/ mouse support
 in X.

My system does not use a /etc/X11/xorg.conf anymore, but I nevertheless
need to configure my dual-screen setup for radeon through the attached
 /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-device.conf. With today's upload of
xserver-xorg-input-evdev 1:2.3.2-5, evdev starts to depend on the (new)
preconfiguration in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/05-evdev.conf, but due to
the presence of my custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-device.conf,
xserver-xorg-core never attempts to load 05-evdev.conf (or 10-vmmouse.conf
 for that matter).

So use xorg.conf instead of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d.

Cheers,
Julieb

No, X didn't lose your data.

All the unsaved data in the GUI applications running in xserver are
gone without any chance to save them. This is what I meant by 'losing
the data' due to the crash.

The latest revision removed the udev configuration file for evdev and
created a new configuration file in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d
But this file is not read. The module evdev is not loaded and there is
no keyboard in X.
I copied the file 05-evdev.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and the keyboard
was back.

Perhaps an extra clause is needed above? A little googling throws up mention
of 10-evdev.conf which does not seem to be present here. But then that seems

What is required to make the mice useable again?

Bug#576719: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: multitouch emulation stopped working

This part of the changelog might be of interest:
* 15-keep-udev-x11-driver.diff: keep looking for the x11_driver udev
property as a transitional measure. This should allow the new server to
work while drivers aren't transitioned to xorg.conf.d yet.

After downgrading these packages to the previous version (2:1.7.6-1),
  things work fine again.

I hence reassign this bug to xserver-xorg-core (feel free to change it
  if that's not right).

To xserver-xorg-core maintainers: my local udev rules file which lets me
set the correct options to the synaptics driver doesn't seem to be taken
into account in the last version available in sid, despite the
  15-keep-udev-x11-driver.diff patch.

Not a bug, the x11_options in udev is now ignored. Use xorg.conf to
set options, using an InputClass section with e.g. the MatchIsTouchpad
option (see the xorg.conf manpage and
 https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Input_device_configuration).

Thanks a lot Julien, it now works - I missed the MatchIsTouchpad option
in my first tests.

Cheers,
Julien

Hi Julien,
In my case, I use a laptop whose keyboard was rendered useless in X
with this update.
Thankfully I only had a small upgraded set of packages on this day so
the culprit was fairly obvious, and I was able to boot to runlevel 3
and a downgrade to the testing package got me going temporarily.

I also don't use an /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I have a config in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ for my synaptics touchpad to enable tapping.

Please consider resetting the severity to higher than wishlist.

Regards,
Bernie

Then move it from xorg.conf.d to xorg.conf. Problem solved. We'll
consider allowing xorg.conf.d, and worst case it will be there with
xserver 1.8 after squeeze, but this is still wishlist.

Bug#577279: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: no synaptics functionality after sid update

2010-04-14 Thread David Purton
I too have this problem.

Downgrading xserver-xorg-input-evdev to 1:2.3.2-4 fixed the touchpad
(but broke the keyboard).

I don't have an xorg.conf file at all, is it possible to set the
AutoServerLayout setting in some other way? e.g., udev. I'll have a
play and see.

But either way, this still shouldn't behave as it currently does without
an xorg.conf file.

Bug#577724: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Fail to start Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. when laptop's LID closed

2010-04-14 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi.

Frank Lin PIAT fp...@klabs.be (14/04/2010):
I have an anoying problem when I close my laptop lid during the
computer startup (i.e between grub and Xorg initialisation): Xorg
 fails to start.

Restarting gdm with the laptop lid open works.

What do you expect it to do? Start and display stuff on displays that
aren't connected?

Feel free to report that upstream with your suggestions anyway (bonus
points if you leave a pointer here to your upstream bugreport).

as a wild guess, same issue as detailed in #577279 I just closed;
wait a few hours (until the fixed package is available on the mirrors)
and upgrade your -synaptics package, that should fix your issue.

Bug#577442: xkb-data: Support for Logitech Elite Keyboard

Other things may be done for a fuller support (geometry, etc.) and
can be done if somebody is willing to include it (this keyboard is a
bit out of fashion, but it is mine).

If you want to support its inclusion, I suggest you open a bug
upstream directly. Bonus points if you leave a pointer here to your
bugreport there.

Package: libpixman-1-0
Version: 0.14.0-1
Severity: important

I am tracking testing. Recently after the release of lenny I noticed
that my terminal emulator
(konsole) became almost unusably slow. The lines refresh about twice
as fast as I can read them
-- that is, when I do 'ls', I can almost follow along as the output appears!

After some testing I have narrowed it to libpixman-1-0. I checked out
the git and did a bisect,
and determined the problem is the following commit:

92ef26dfed3337831dd5156bfe0d20b132a26a29 is first bad commit
commit 92ef26dfed3337831dd5156bfe0d20b132a26a29

Date: Wed Apr 23 00:18:39 2008 -0400

This happened a bit after the version 0.11.1 tag (lenny has 0.10.0 and
squeeze has 0.14.0).
I hope this can be fixed, as it makes my terminal incredibly frustrating to use.

After updating to xserver 1.7.5, the keyboard doesn't work, if I start the
xserver (it doesn't matter which window manager).
I get the following output if I start the xserver:
www.inf.tu-dresden.de/~s5569359/xstart.log

xev shows, that the key press events are recognized, but there is no keysym
found
e.g. a and Enter: www.inf.tu-dresden.de/~s5569359/c
I tried several keymaps. Executing xmodmap -pk while a xsession gives a normal
key table.

xinitrc and xsession are empty. libx11-6 and all orther related packages are
uptodate.

Dear maintainers,

because nobody of you paid attention to my previous bug report (#570007),
I wrote a new one in a better form, which contains also some new
information:

I've got a bug, that is similar to this reported one year ago:
http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-u...@lists.debian.org/msg537177.html
The difference is, that all my packages are uptodate (sid), see list below.

Here, again: If I press b and release b three times, I get the following
on xev:

KeyPress event, serial 24, synthetic NO, window 0xa1,
root 0x113, subw 0x0, time 1121823, (682,367), root:(683,384),
state 0x0, keycode 56 (keysym 0x62, b), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (62) b
XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (62) b
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 27, synthetic NO, window 0xa1,
root 0x113, subw 0x0, time 1121923, (682,367), root:(683,384),
state 0x5, keycode 56 (keysym 0x42, B), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (02) ^B
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyPress event, serial 27, synthetic NO, window 0xa1,
root 0x113, subw 0x0, time 1123068, (682,367), root:(683,384),
state 0x5, keycode 56 (keysym 0x42, B), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (02) ^B
XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (02) ^B
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 27, synthetic NO, window 0xa1,
root 0x113, subw 0x0, time 1123210, (682,367), root:(683,384),
state 0x5, keycode 56 (keysym 0x42, B), same_screen YES,

XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyPress event, serial 27, synthetic NO, window 0xa1,
root 0x113, subw 0x0, time 1124205, (682,367), root:(683,384),
state 0x0, keycode 56 (keysym 0x62, b), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (62) b
XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (62) b
XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 27, synthetic NO, window 0xa1,
root 0x113, subw 0x0, time 1124314, (682,367), root:(683,384),
state 0x5, keycode 56 (keysym 0x42, B), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (02) ^B
XFilterEvent returns: False

In other words I must print a letter $X twice to get one $X and the second
is key stroke is interpeted as Ctrl+Shift+$X.

If I don't write setxkbmap us on .xinitrc, I get the following in xev by
press and release key c:

KeyPress event, serial 27, synthetic NO, window 0xa1,
root 0x113, subw 0x0, time 2933923, (744,320), root:(745,337),
state 0x0, keycode 36 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False
KeyRelease event, serial 27, synthetic NO, window 0xa1,
root 0x113, subw 0x0, time 2934070, (744,320), root:(745,337),
state 0x0, keycode 36 (keysym 0x0, NoSymbol), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
XFilterEvent returns: False

In other words the keyboard doesn't work at all.

Additional Information:

Output of setxkbmap -v 10:
http://paste.debian.net/68234/

Output of /usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 31 :
http://paste.debian.net/68228/

Versions of all x-related packages:
http://paste.debian.net/68232/

My .xinitrc for testing:
http://paste.debian.net/68231/

Output of startx:
http://paste.debian.net/68233/

I'm not sure which package causes this problem. If you know, please move
the bug report to the right section.
My xserver is unusable for more the two months. Please, please help!

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely

Paul Mittelstaedt

Bug#577769: xserver-xorg-core: ignores /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/ in the presence of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

2010-04-14 Thread Kan-Ru Chen
Hi Julien,

The manpage xorg.conf(5) gives a impression that all configuration files
will be searched, in a sane order. Combine the InputClass sections'
description, users will think: okay, I can override the default settings
by adding files to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

Because other conf.d, rules.d, etc. have this kind of usage. But the
Xorg's behavior is rather surprising.

Regards,
Kanru

Just tried the latest synaptics driver from xsf git [1]. It works now.
Sorry for the noise.
