Upgrading to 2.13.0 makes it work just fine for me. I also realize I selected a fantastic YouTube video to experiment with :-D To my defense, I hadn't actually seen it myself (after all, my GPU was hanging every time I tried). /* Steinar */ -- Homepage: http://www.sesse.net/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". The way we're currently handling the xserver ABI is a pain, because it means we need Conflicts on older drivers, which confuses the hell out of the package manager (aptitude is particularly bad at this iirc). What I think would make more sense is to have the server provide xorg-video-abi-$N (or whatever we may want to call it) and the driver depend on that virtual abi package (in addition to the existing serverminver dependency for minor bumps). I'm not sure what this means for xserver-xorg's current "any driver with the right ABI" dependency. Maybe the drivers can keep providing an xorg-driver virtual package (which wouldn't have to be versioned). Thoughts? Depending on the configuration It happens, that the applications aren't handling [AltGr]-modified keys in the right way: Example: My settings are: $ setxkbmap -layout gb,us,us,us -variant intl,,, I'm typing [AltGr]+[M] and the letter "µ" (UTF-16: 0x00B5) appears in all applications (first layout, as US layout would result in the letter "m") Now I change: $ setxkbmap -layout gb,us,us,ir -variant intl,,, I'm still using the first layout. For the last "ir" is choosen as there is no "µ" no [AltGr]+[M] and the error occurs this way. - On some applications I still get a "µ": xterm, vim-gtk, wpa_gui, konqueror and all tested KDE applications - On some applications I get a invalid letter "": konsole - On some applications I get no letter at all: oowriter, inkscape, leafpad, iceweasel, opera (Qt3), opera (Qt4) Anyway, non ASCII letters which are available without [AltGr] as well as composed letters are available any time. I've compared the xev output for both settings. For the error situation it looks like that: KeyPress event, serial 31, synthetic NO, window 0x441, root 0x11f, subw 0x0, time 242013275, (-357,-507), root:(1906,358), state 0x10, keycode 108 (keysym 0xfe03, ISO_Level3_Shift), same_screen YES, XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 92 XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x441, root 0x11f, subw 0x0, time 242013445, (-357,-507), root:(1906,358), state 0x98, keycode 58 (keysym 0xb5, mu), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c2 b5) "µ" XmbLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c2 b5) "µ" XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x441, root 0x11f, subw 0x0, time 242013498, (-357,-507), root:(1906,358), state 0x98, keycode 108 (keysym 0xfe03, ISO_Level3_Shift), same_screen YES, XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 92 XLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: False KeyRelease event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x441, root 0x11f, subw 0x0, time 242013523, (-357,-507), root:(1906,358), state 0x10, keycode 58 (keysym 0x6d, m), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (6d) "m" XFilterEvent returns: False For the nice situation in the second and third entry the state is 0x90 and not 0x98. I have the problem on a second computer also with Debian testing installation. Also on the current Knoppix CD (6.01 I think) there is the same problem. On a current(?) GPU hung Hello Steinar, can you tell us what's your chipset? I ask you because, reading from debian-x ml seems that people with chipset like i830, i845 keep on seeing this kind of problem. I have an i855 and i'm here to say to the Debian X strike force and to the debian kernel team that the combination of 2.6.32-24 (and above) and 2.12.0+shadow-2 is a great improvement for me: after about a week of hour and hour of work with this x driver and 2.6.35-rc6 i haven't seen an hang or a video problem (i scaramantically touch iron saying this). I've also noted on debian-x that complains about i855 seems to have fallen down and many bugs were closed, isn't it? I can reproduce it 100% reliably by trying to play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrwjatDnLKY in Google Chrome with HTML5 enabled. I can reproduce this video without problem, also going fullscreen (in the past week this operation caused me freeze or X restarting itself). It'd be nice to know how it goes with 2.13.0-1 (just uploaded to experimental, so available in a few hours). I'm waiting to try. It's not on my mirror yet. Ciao. Bug#575971: Display frequency "Out-of-Range" during boot
Hi, la...@inav.net (31/03/2010): > Please fix this so I will be able to again use Debian! we would need a bit more info about your issue. Getting kernel and X logs would be needed. They can probably be obtained through the files under /var/log by logging in into single-user mode, so that X doesn't start and fiddle with your screen. That should make your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file available, please attach it as well. You could try and specify Driver "vesa" if that's not the case already. It might be less troublesome. I run startx from tty1 and gdb from tty2. But I have a new idea about the why of the bug : it has more chances to appear if I've underclocked my CPUs and if the Xine window is bigger.

Server aborting OK, good, “just” a segfault. Is there any chance to install debugging packages (xserver-xorg-core-dbg and xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-dbg), and to run X inside gdb, so as to get a full backtrace? If that makes things easier for you, you can get a core dump first, and then get the full backtrace out of it, post-mortem. > > > Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-progval3 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) > > > > Not sure which one it is, but Debian's 2.6.32 includes many > > DRM-related fixes from later kerrnel versions, which should > > improve the “graphics experience”. > > I am not sure I understand that, but I'll try to answer. The idea was to determine whether you were running “just” a 2.6.32(.y) upstream release, or whether you had some patches on top of it. Since you're using Debian's source, that's alright, you should have DRM patches, which is good. (It might be nice to know which exact kernel version you fetched through apt-get source, though.) Hmm, X log doesn't say much; maybe running X inside gdb from a remote machine would help spot what happens when it gets terminated. Maybe you have the X log of the crash somewhere as a first clue? You may want to try 2.12 from sid or 2.13 from experimental (with sid's kernel) and report back. Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#598818: xorg: X crashes with segmentation fault when Xine window is out of the screen
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.5+7 Severity: important Tags: upstream Hello, I was trying to look for a movie with Xine. Then, I accidentally moved the windows out of my screen (the left border), and X crashed. I launched it again (I always run X with startx as a non-root user), tryed to reproduce the bug, and it appears again. I made several other tests, as viewing another video, or viewing the first one with DragonPlayer : no problem. Then, I tryed again to reproduce it with the first video in Xine at the bottom, the right : nothing happens. Then, I tested to make it got out of the screen at the left, nothing happened instanly, but, after some random moves, X crashed again. Now, I am unable to reproduce the bug again. The movie's name is Sintel.2010.2K.Theora-VODO.mp4 (I say that because it seems to have some influence on the bug) Best regards, ProgVal -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-progval3 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=fr_FR.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages xorg depends on: ii gnome-terminal [x-terminal-em 2.30.2-1 The GNOME terminal emulator applic ii libgl1-mesa-dri 7.7.1-4A free implementation of the OpenG ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1] 7.7.1-4A free implementation of the OpenG ii libglu1-mesa 7.7.1-4The OpenGL utility library (GLU) ii x11-apps 7.5+5 X applications ii x11-session-utils 7.5+1 X session utilities ii x11-utils 7.5+4 X11 utilities ii x11-xfs-utils 7.4+1 X font server utilities ii x11-xkb-utils 7.5+5 X11 XKB utilities ii x11-xserver-utils 7.5+2 X server utilities ii xauth 1:1.0.4-1 X authentication utility ii xfonts-100dpi 1:1.0.1100 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-75dpi 1:1.0.175 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-base 1:1.0.1standard fonts for X ii xfonts-scalable 1:1.0.1-1 scalable fonts for X ii xfonts-utils 1:7.5+2X Window System font utility progr ii xinit 1.2.0-2X server initialisation tool ii xkb-data 1.8-1 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii xorg-docs-core1:1.5-1Core documentation for the X.org X ii xserver-xorg 1:7.5+7the X.Org X server ii xterm [x-terminal-emulator] 261-1 X terminal emulator xorg recommends no packages. Juha Mäkinen (02/10/2010): > after last update X crashes now and then with message > "drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed ... GPU hung" Is it still possible to start X again without rebooting? I'd guess so, but let's check. If you find a particular pattern / way to reproduce this issue, I'd be glad to hear about it. Blank monitor, no keyboard input any more, even SSH doesn't work. Seems like a kernel panic or something similar. But I guess this belongs to a separate bug report. Also I recognized when using vesa and disabling KMS, I can't switch back to a virtual console or the screen goes blank. Even switching back to X leaves me with a blank screen. But I guess this belongs to a separate bug report, too :). Man, I can remember graphics drivers being less complicated under Linux five years ago, what happened to them?
