Bug#667754: xserver-xorg-video-radeon: [RV250] Gnome shell unusable (screen corruptions & permanent crashes)

2012-04-06 Thread Stefan Nagy
Hi,

06.04.2012, 18:43 +0200 Cyril Brulebois:
> > Versions of packages xserver-xorg-video-radeon suggests:
> > pn firmware-linux

The package firmware-linux-nonfree – which includes the Radeon
R200-family CP microcode (radeon/R200_cp.bin) – was already installed.
However, I tried to install the meta-package firmware-linux (with
firmware-linux-free) now without any effect.

In fact I can't even start GNOME Shell without the firmware installed,
by trying I would enter the fallback mode automatically.

Thanks,
Stefan.

2012-04-06 Thread Stefan Nagy
I'd like to add that I don't have any problems – apart from one minor
bug: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25883 – but a great
graphics performance using Gnome 2.30.2 & Compiz 0.8.4 on Squeeze.

Indeed, libcairo2 downgrading seems to fix this issue. Thanks to you

Thanks, but unfortunately the sysprof callgraphs are pretty much useless
on 64 bit.

That said, your mention of iceweasel reminds me of
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47266 , which apart from
the visual corruption also involves degraded performance due to many
more software rendering fallbacks.

If downgrading libcairo2 to 1.10.2 works around the problem, that's
probably the best workaround for now until we get a better handle on the
above. Otherwise, Option "NoAccel" might be feasible if you don't need
OpenGL or XVideo acceleration.
