 Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation?
After a major upgrade, many graphics intensive applications
stopped working. For instance: in Skype calls, remote users could
see me, but I could not see video of either myself or others
(blank screen). Cheese crashed on startup. Tarski's World (a
  closed-source Java-based logic software: http://lpl.stanford.edu)
also crashed on startup. I tried glxgears, and it turned out that
that also crashed on startup. Note that some of these applications
are using the amd64 version of the library and some are in i386
compatibility mode. The programs that were segfaulting identified
the library file i965_dri.so as the location of the segfault.
(Either the i386 version or the amd64 version.) I attach the core
  generated by glxgears.

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
  ineffective)?
I have not found a workaround.

Okay, could you please temporarily disable the 3D driver, e.g. with

 # echo LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 /etc/environment

(not sure if lightdm makes any use of it, just to rule that out) and try
 a 3.7 kernel from experimental?

This doesn't seem to have any effect. I'm now on 3.16-2 from unstable.

If the problem still persists, file an
upstream bug on freedesktop bugzilla, see
 http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs for instructions.

It's still on my TODO list, but...

Kind regards,

NB : I've fixed this bug on my laptop, so the informations below are correct.
But with this bug, none of the GL applications work : glxinfo for example
returns Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig.

 Description of the bug :
This bug appeared after an upgrade of the packages. When Xorg is loading the
GLX module, there is an error with libs r600_dri.so and swrast_dri.so.
 The Xorg.0.log says :
[50.309] (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of
 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r600_dri.so failed
 (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r600_dri.so: undefined symbol:
 _glapi_tls_Dispatch)
[50.309] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[50.327] (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of
 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/swrast_dri.so failed
 (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/swrast_dri.so: undefined symbol:
 _glapi_tls_Dispatch)
[50.327] (EE) GLX: could not load software renderer

So the GLX module is not loaded, and all of apps that are using OpenGL can
 not work (including glxinfo).
The problem is that the libs try to use a tls function, but they seem not to
be built correctly. To fix it, you must re-build the Mesa library with the
flag --enable-glx-tls, and it should work correctly (that is what I have
done, and now all is working fine).

 Dear Maintainer,

using jessie, with xserver-common and xwayland from sid, i opened
weston/weston-launch. then i opened a terminal and ran xman.

i resized the window by dragging the corner, but it was very slow, and a
thick black border flickered around the window. i also clicked Manual
Page in xman and then tested two finger scrolling in that window (in
windowed mode). however, scrolling was very slow.

i installed xwayland version 1.15.99.904 from source and i did not
 notice this issue.

would you please make sure that this is not an issue when packaging the
 future xwayland 1.16 release?

 thanks!

mesa-opencl-icd depends on ocl-icd-libopencl1, which makes it
uninstallable in systems that have a different libopencl1 installed
(e.g. amd-libopencl1). The dependency should be relaxed to accept the
generic virtual libopencl1 as a valid alternative.

 Followup-For: Bug #743035

FWIW I had the same chrome issue with the following error:
libGL error: MESA-LOADER: could not create udev device for fd 13
 (Albeit for radeon)

After tracing this a bit, I resolved it by removing the old libudev0 which
 was still installed.
The bug is that chrome is linked against both libudev0 and libudev1 and was
 resolving both
 in an interfering manner.

Starting chrome with --no-sandbox I got this additional hint:
 not in sys :/sys/dev/char/226:0

Which is from this udev check and doesn't make any sense at all as
 /sys/dev/char/226:0
is part of the /sys tree and also present in there.

/* path starts in sys */
 len = strlen(udev_get_sys_path(udev));
 if (strncmp(syspath, udev_get_sys_path(udev), len) != 0) {
 info(udev, not in sys :%s\n, syspath);
 return NULL;

I then found that chrome links against both udev versions:
 $ ldd /opt/google/chrome/chrome | grep udev
 libudev.so.0 = /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libudev.so.0 (0x7f469851)
 libudev.so.1 = /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libudev.so.1 (0x7f468fe78000)

And trying purging libudev0 using aptitude purge libudev0 which didn't
 complain
about any remaining users of this lib.

Now 3D acceleration is working fine again.

xsever-xorg-video-vmware is now failing to build on kfreebsd

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XATRACKER_CFLAGS
and XATRACKER_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

Bug#700235: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: uninitialized video memory or garbled images on login screen (lightdm)

2013-02-10 Thread Andrei POPESCU
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Version: 1:1.0.1-5
Severity: normal

Hello,

I'm seeing #631391[1], but with lightdm and nouveau, even the workaround
works (disabling compositing). Since I don't have any problems with the
proprietary nvidia driver I thought it might be the driver.

[1] if you don't want to look it up a short summary is: on login strange
effects are seen when cold-booting or garbled pieces from previous
session if you reboot. The workaround is to disable compositing.

Kind regards,
Andrei

My first attempts produced only a small backtrace (attached) which seems
to be indication of missing some -dbg packages (I already have -core-dbg
 installed).

 Since I can't find a -joystick-dbg package I'm assuming I have to
recompile -joystick myself. I'll look into it as soon as possible, but
 definitely not this weekend.

Attached a slightly bigger backtrace obtained with -joystick recompiled
with debugging symbols on. Just hope I got it right ;)

Kind regards,

Re: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#636108: lightdm: does not source ~/.profile

2011-08-03 Thread Andrei POPESCU
[Bcc'd all *dm maintainers and debian-x, in case they want to comment,
apologize if you get this multiple times]

Dear Debian Developers,

Background: most common ways[1] of logging in to a Debian system involve
executing or sourcing ~/.profile at some point, but not all of them.

[1] tested gdm, slim, console login, from memory I recall kdm and gdm3
doing the same

I won't comment on your statement that the dm is not the right place,

*default*, just as it is done on a console login.

It's read by bash (and zsh and few other shells I guess).

Bug#590549: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau: setting wrong screen physical size/DPI

2010-07-27 Thread Andrei POPESCU
Package: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
Version: 1:0.0.15+git20100329+7858345-4
Severity: normal

Hi,

$ xdpyinfo | grep -E '(reso|dime)'
  dimensions:1680x1050 pixels (444x277 millimeters)
  resolution:96x96 dots per inch

The dimensions in pixel are correct, but the millimeters are wrong. I
measured that at ~333x209 mm and even the driver agrees (330x210), but
it then later sets the wrong dimensions.

The same happens also with the version in experimental and
2.6.35-rc6-amd64.

I can provide more info if needed.

Regards,
Andrei

Of course we do. I added gpointing-device-settings, but it only

That's bad.

I've written myself a script that I have to run any time I plug

Preferably per some unique id. I only need the emulate wheel on the

Bug#444483: Is this bug responsible for not sourcing ~/.profile ?

2009-09-30 Thread Andrei Popescu
Hello,

I just tried out xdm (instead of gdm) but noticed that .profile is not
sourced. Moving all '@include's at the bottom in /etc/pam.d/xdm didn't
make a difference either (or am I completely misunderstanding this?).

Bug#499594: xinit: broken for direct usage

2008-09-20 Thread Andrei Popescu
Package: xinit
Version: 1.0.9-2
Severity: important

Hello,

According to the man page I should be able to do something like

xinit gmplayer

but I get:

xinit: No such file of directory (errno 2): no program named xterm in PATH

But I didn't try to start xterm! Even if I try to work around this (which seems
to be #297003) by creating an xterm symlink xinit is trying to append the
string 'gmplayer' as an argument to 'xterm'.

I'm guessing in this era of display managers not many people are using xinit
directly, but this is valid usage of the program and is completely broken.

Regards,
Andrei

The patch in upstream commit 8e253e1bedfaf4beba3763c1e6b9ef4a706487a3
should fix this issue. Please apply to the Debian package.

As this seems to affect other packages (xfce4-xkb-plugin) maybe this bug
should be 'serious'? Anyway, please fix this for lenny. As said before,
this will also fix #483725 and #486891 (which should probably just be
merged with this one).

Finally I came up with a patch that I am pretty sure will help solve
some issues. Here what it does:
 - remove bad aliases (std was aliased to std_cedilla)
 - changed all references from std_comma to std (std is the reference)
 - added std_comma and comma aliases (as Andrei's patch does)

Isn't it necessary to add the aliases for std_comma and comma
everywhere?

With this patch setxkbmap returns correct output and xfce4-xkb-plugin
is happy. I am sure that the bad aliases were the actual bug that had
to be solved. Pretty amazed how such an obvious thing could slip into
 the wild.

I only hope we are allowed to fix this regression, now that lenny is
frozen...

Here is another point that I would like to make. In my config us has no
variant and I thought that it would be redundant to add std variant to ro
as it is the *standard*. The default for ro seems to be the 'basic' variant.
How the default variant is chosen? Is it the first one to be listed in
 symbols/ro
 file?

AFAIK 'basic' has always been the default variant. 'std' is only a name
and it actually refers to the fact that it the primary variant according
to the official Romanian standards. Linux always had the secondary
variant as default (see also the comments in the ro symbols file). The
change was only with regards to comma or cedilla below.

Andrei

I had the same question but ignored it. It's really annoying to go
through each reference of ro layout and add a new layout. Could

Ok, I've done it (patch against the base file in xkeyboard-config-1.3

we just hack the symbols/ro file and add there new layouts which
would just include the needed ones? Is this a good or bad practice?

My (uneducated) guess is that the rules file is meant to prevent exactly
this.

Dear Julien,

What are the chances to get this in Lenny? I would see this as a major
regression for users of Romanian layouts, caused by the patch switching
default ro layout (and more important renaming most of them) in 1.3

Does this warrant a freeze exception?

Andrei

Bug#490013: More info regargin xkb-data and 'ro' layouts

2008-07-27 Thread Andrei Popescu
Package: xkb-data
Version: 1.3-1
Followup-For: Bug #490013

Hello, I am seeing a somewhat different issue, but my guess is this is
related

$ setxkbmap -v 10 ro std
Setting verbose level to 10
locale is C
Warning! Multiple definitions of keyboard layout
Using command line, ignoring X server
Applied rules from xorg:
model: pc105
layout: ro
variant:std
Trying to build keymap using the following components:
keycodes: xfree86+aliases(qwertz)
types: complete
compat: complete
symbols:pc+ro(std_cedilla)
geometry: pc(pc105)

Please note symbols: shows std_cedilla and indeed the layout is the
one using cedillas.

$ setxkbmap -v 10 ro,de std
Setting verbose level to 10
locale is C
Warning! Multiple definitions of keyboard layout
Using command line, ignoring X server
Warning! Multiple definitions of layout variant
Using command line, ignoring X server
Applied rules from xorg:
model: pc105
layout: ro,de
variant:std
Trying to build keymap using the following components:
keycodes: xfree86+aliases(qwertz)
types: complete
compat: complete
symbols:pc+ro+de:2
geometry: pc(pc105)

Now I get the correct std variant!

It looks to me like some kind of regression introduced by the patch to
change the default Romanian layout. It would be very important for the
Romanian community to fix this before the release. In case you need some
quick testing you can also Cc debian-l10n-romanian.

Regards,
Andrei

  keycodes: xfree86+aliases(qwertz)
  types: complete
  compat: complete
  symbols:pc+ro(std_cedilla)
  geometry: pc(pc105)

Please note symbols: shows std_cedilla and indeed the layout is the
  one using cedillas.

 That's because /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg has:
! model layout variant = symbols
   * ro  de  =   pc+ro(winkeys)
   * ro  us  =   pc+ro(std_comma)
   * ro  std =   pc+ro(std_cedilla)
   * ro  academic=
 pc+ro(std_comma)

So layout ro and variant std is mapped to symbols pc+ro(std_cedilla).

Ok, here's a patch which makes sense IMO:

Bonus, old names academic, comma and std_comma are now mapped to
the correct variants.

Bug#452894: bug is still present

2008-02-11 Thread Andrei Popescu
Hello,

The bug is still present.

dpkg -l *intel | grep ^ii

ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.2.0.90-3 X.Org X
server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver

uname -a

Linux think 2.6.24-1-686 #1 SMP Wed Feb 6 15:20:27 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

lsmod | grep thinkpad

thinkpad_acpi 48028 0
nvram 8488 1 thinkpad_acpi

The brightness is reduced when starting X (startx), switching to a VT or
after the screen goes blank. It does go away if I set BRIGHTNESS_CONTROL
to ex. native.

Regards,
Andrei

Yes it does work, I should have RTFWiki ;) , now I get 85x86.

Sorry for the noise and many thankd for the quick reply.

Bug#461501: xserver-xorg-core: dpi set to 96 inspite of DisplaySize option

2008-01-18 Thread Andrei Popescu
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.4.1~git20080105-2
Severity: normal

As you can see below, I have set a DisplaySize in xorg.conf which should
get me a dpi of 85:

$ grep DPI /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(**) intel(0): DPI set to (85, 114)

but instead I get the (new) default 96 (according to xdpyinfo). I can
change it with xrandr, but according to the NEWS for xinit it should
work like this.

Regards,
Andrei
