I'm doing some updates for nodm and had a look at this bug, too.

Is this bug still relevant? I do not see any indications on
tracker.debian.org nor any related lintian problem.

Further the patch in [1] is only partially applied to gdm3 (no
relevant change in postinst compared to nodm) and it contradicts at
least 1. of the list above (it *removes* the systemd unit
Alias=display-manager.service).

I compared the postints of gdm3 and nodem and they are the same in
this regard. Further the systemd unit file of nodm does not contain
Alias=display-manager.service (so no patch needed here?).

Greetings

 Helge

Bug#633343: Bug#633441: Lost keyboard - workaround found -- calling udevadm trigger

2011-08-02 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
tag 633441 + unreproducible
tag 633343 + unreproducible
thanks

Hello,
I finally managed to boot into an early shell as described in the
documentation for udev (see below for how to achive this with grub2)
just to see - nothing. I then commented out the udevadm trigger
command, and the keyboard still works after the reboot in X. Even
after cold reboot. Even if I remove the execution bits from
/etc/rc.local. Even after a few days. Thus I cannot reproduce this bug
any longer. Maybe because of a self compiled kernel, maybe because
some other changes in /etc (I'm in the middle of setting it up,
alias).

Thanks for all the help. In case this occurs again, I now know how to
debug it and will open a new bug (if you want to close these ones).

Here is how to achive the early shell with grub2:
Add the following to /etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=init=/bin/bash
and run update-grub afterwards. After next boot you obtain the
desired shell. Maybe this could be added to the information provided
for udev already.

Greetings

I could give you more details if you like, but using xorg.conf like

Thanks for the hint. The following workaround works on my machine:

Adding the line
udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=input --action=change
to /etc/rc.local

I'm currently looking if there is some error message early in the boot
process.

I don't see any line like egrep 'Loading.*input' /var/log/Xorg.0.log in your
log. I'm quite sure there should be some.

The udev maintainer assumes an error early in the boot process (cf.
#633441 for details).

No. This probably happens because the udev init script failed.
Again, you need to find out why. Watch closely the boot process.

I have no idea how to find that out, especially since I cannot find
any error message related to udev except:

Waiting for /dev to be fully populated...[3.519432] r600_cp:
Failed to laod firmware radeon/CEDAR_pfp.bin
(and then something about disabling GPU acceleration).

Otherwise I cannot find anything suggesting a problem with udev, no
failed, error, problem etc. during system boot, nor anything related
in the system logs, a restart of udev completes without any visible (on the
console / in the logs) error

 Also, read README.Debian.

I did. I could not find anything specific. I tried booting into single
user mode as described but given that I use lvm, this is non trivial
(I ended up in a kernel panic because no further partition could be
found).

I'll see if I try later when I have a kernel without initrd, but if
you now further venues for research please tell me.

Bug#633343: xserver-xorg-core: No keyboard after fresh install

2011-07-10 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
clone 633343 -1
reassign -1 udev
notfound -1 2:1.10.2-2
found -1 171-1
thanks

Hello Marco,
a fresh install from the daily netinstimage from Friday, but as soon
as X starts the keyboard is dead (i.e. even Num Lock does not lit up
the led). On the console, in grub etc. everything is fine. I reported
this to xserver-xorg-core, but Julien Cristau told me that it is not an
X bug by judging

  /sbin/udevadm info --export-db | awk -F '\n' -v RS='\n\n' '/E: ID_INPUT/ {
  print; print  }

  does not return anything.

From his statement I gather that some output should be produced which
would indicate a possible bug in udev (though I'm not sure by his
statement). Therefor I clone this bug to udev for investigation,
please reassing appropriately if the bug is elsewhere.

For completeness I attached the entire output of
/sbin/udevadm info --export-db. I haven't modified anything udev or
X config related so far.

You can find more information about the system in the bug trail; but
if there is anything missing do not hesitate to ask so I can provide
it to you.

Thanks!

Greetings

Helge

P.S. This still happens after todays update on xserver-xorg-core

Looks like your system is broken in some way and udev is not running or
failed for some reason. You will have to find out why.

This is a *default install*, no modifications so far to udev and the
Xorg configuration. The hardware is brand new and was
extensivly checked.

root@sneo:~# /etc/init.d/udev restart

Bug#633343: Lost keyboard - workaround found -- calling udevadm trigger

2011-07-10 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello,
I tried to understand X and udev interact and at which step something
went wrong. Along the way I read
/usr/share/doc/keyboard-configuration/README.Debian
and issued

udevadm trigger --subsystem-match=input --action=change

No further change was done/necessary.

And now keyboard works under X. I put this in /etc/rc.local and voila,
even after a reboot the keyboard works.

Could that be because I have EFI (AFAIK) and not a traditional BIOS?

I'm still willing to help finding the cause, if you want. E.g.
checking if that still happens if I connect the keyboard to USB
instead of the keyboard plug etc., trying patches ...

It would be a pitty if other users would have to investigate again for
this (well, they probably read the bug logs, so they can reduce their
time investement).

Just to remind you: *new hardware*, *well tested* and *default
install*

Greetings

Bug#633343: xserver-xorg-core: No keyboard after fresh install

2011-07-09 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.10.2-2
Severity: important

(Maybe related to #585642, but fresh install, no hal)

A fresh install of Debian Wheezy (daily image from June 8th, 2011, see
#633306 for details). As long as X runs, no keyboard is present. Tried with
gdm3, kdm and startx. After re-enabling the consoles (options radeon modeset=0
in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf, will report this separately) the keyboard
works fine on the console (as well as in emergency shell and on the grub
prompt). I do not have hal installed. I did not configure anything related
to X, hal, udev friends atm (a fresh install!). Looking at the X logs
(both in /var and in .xsession-errors and the output from startx) there is
no (for me) visible mention of keyboard.

Please note that a mouse is currently not attached (It is still needed on my
old system), but I can of course attach it for testing reasons.

/sbin/udevadm info --export-db | awk -F '\n' -v RS='\n\n' '/E: ID_INPUT/ {
print; print  }

does not return anything. Skipping the awk command and looking for keyboard
yields the following:

(Maybe related to #585642, but fresh install, no hal)

A fresh install of Debian Wheezy (daily image from June 8th, 2011, see
#633306 for details). As long as X runs, no keyboard is present. Tried with
gdm3, kdm and startx. After re-enabling the consoles (options radeon
  modeset=0
in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf, will report this separately) the
  keyboard
works fine on the console (as well as in emergency shell and on the grub

  /sbin/udevadm info --export-db | awk -F '\n' -v RS='\n\n' '/E: ID_INPUT/ {
  print; print  }

  does not return anything.

Then this is not an X bug.

Then please reassing to where the bug is/might be? Currently X is
unusuable and this is a *fresh install*. (Btw. the very similar
#585642 is still an X bug?)

Thanks.

Bug#633344: xserver-xorg-core: No consoles after default install/upgrade on ATI

Neither on an upgrade from Lenny (where the logs attached apply) and on a
fresh install (see #633343 for hardware/version info) had working consoles.
Both are ATI cards. The fix (thus the patch tag) is to edit
  /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf
and to change the 1 to 0.

That's not what the patch tag means.

Ok. Probably better denoted as workaround?

This is probably not the right fix, but this at least returns the
consoles to work (which I use heavily) and which worked flawlessly in
every prior Debian version (using various ATI cards on various
platforms (PPC, Alpha, x86, x86_64)) I used (since potatoe, IIRC).

Is your problem reproducible with the Debian kernel? If yes, please
 provide the full kernel log.

Yes, of course, in both cases.

I attached the dmesg output (is that the log you need? I'm sorry if
that is the wrong one, or do you mean /log/kern.log?) for the second
case (new install) *with* the change. All other infos for this machine
are in #633343, if you need more do not hesitate to ask and I can
provide them.

Right now (due to the upgraded machine beeing my main machine and the
new one suffering #633343) it is a little difficult to reboot the
upgraded machine into a Debian kernel, but if that helps I can later
do that as well and provide you with the log(s) you require.

Thanks for your very fast response!

Greetings

Ok, I did not know that.

  c) For some reason, root does not have a permission to write to the

 setxkbmap -print | xkbcomp - :0.0

But X also crashes when I run this command from my normal account, so
I do not need elevated privileges for the crash :-((

In previous versions the keyboard would be reconfigured and I could
test the new layout. Now, every time I run d) X crashes. Pressing
Ctrl-Z I get a console, pressing Ctrl-Left the machine does not
respond to any keyboard input anymore (I have to ssh in from remote

Package: xserver-xorg

Back in may CVE-2006-1526 was reported [1] and fixed [2]. I looked at my

Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

and see that my server was build *before* the date of the report. Since I did
not see a bug report [3] on this nor did I find anything in
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg, I report this here to track this for Etch.

Possibly a fix can be taken from the Ubuntu USN[4].

I am not sure about the severity, please coordinate if an update Etch
security is necessary.

Furthermore I did not see an DSA for Sarge[5], if Sarge is not vulnerable
then please remember to update the appropriate list[6] accordingly.

I am not sure about the severity, please coordinate if an update Etch
security is necessary.

Furthermore I did not see an DSA for Sarge[4], if Sarge is not vulnerable
then please remember to update the appropriate list[5] accordingly.

Bug#370379: xbase-clients: Very noisy after upgrade to Xorg 7.0

2006-06-04 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 1:7.0.1-2
Severity: wishlist

After upgrade to the version of Xorg 7.0 (from Xorg 6.9) startx (or
the X server, I suppose, so reassign if it belongs there) is very
chatty, the console where startx was issued can hardly be used
anymore. Previous versions only displayed resolution changes (i.e. by games
or movie / video players) which did not occure too often.

Please restore the old behaviour.

If I, for example, now switch to and from X, I see lines like:

Bug#368332: x11-common: Update from Sarge aborts

2006-05-21 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Package: x11-common
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6
Severity: important

This problem is about an upgrade, which did not work very nicely.
Please close, if you are aware of the problem, otherwise either a
workaround should be implemented (if you can see what the underlying
problem is) or the Update guide for Etch needs to contain a note how
to properly deal with this (I probably did not choose the wisest
path).

I am currently upgrading from Sarge to Etch of 2006-05-19. First the most
important once (apt, dpkg) and now I wanted to switch to xorg. Since I
did not know where to start (blame me on this), I issued:

apt-get install xfree86-common

and x11-common died with:
apt-listchanges: Wollen Sie fortsetzen? [J/n]?
Preconfiguring packages ...
.../xfree86-common_6.9.0.dfsg.1-6_all.deb) ...
Entpacke Ersatz für xfree86-common ...
dpkg: warning - unable to delete old directory `/etc/X11/Xsession.d': Das
Verzeichnis ist nicht leer
Wähle vormals abgewähltes Paket x11-common.
Entpacke x11-common (aus .../x11-common_6.9.0.dfsg.1-6_all.deb) ...
dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von
/var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_6.9.0.dfsg.1-6_all.deb (--unpack):

xfree86-common ist

Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_6.9.0.dfsg.1-6_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

So I see two problems:
a) /etc/X11/Xsession.d is not empty, it contains:
remaxp:~# ls /etc/X11/Xsession.d
20xfree86-common_process-args.x11-common-tmp
30xfree86-common_xresources.x11-common-tmp
50xfree86-common_determine-startup.x11-common-tmp
90xfree86-common_ssh-agent.x11-common-tmp
99xfree86-common_start.x11-common-tmp

b) /etc/X11/Xsession is in both xfree86-common and x11-common, and
   upgrade failed.

Issuing apt-get -f install the first error disappers, only the
second one remains:
Preconfiguring packages ...
(broken pipe))
Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_6.9.0.dfsg.1-6_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

apt-get remove xfree86-common does not proceed, as lots of dependencies
would not be satisfied, and apt-get -f install is recommended. This,
however, does not help (same as above).

apt-get install x11-common does not help either.

Trying to remove xfree86-common by dpkg or installing x11-common
yields the same error.

Interestingly, the file/directory /etc/X11/Xsession does not exist:
remaxp:~# ls -d /etc/X11/X*
/etc/X11/X /etc/X11/Xsession.d
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/Xsession.options.x11-common-tmp
/etc/X11/Xloadimage/etc/X11/Xsession.x11-common-tmp
/etc/X11/Xresources/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

I try to rename the Xsession.d one:
remaxp:/etc/X11# move Xsession.d Xsession.d.old
»Xsession.d« - »Xsession.d.old«

Now I am rather stuck. I try
dpkg -i --force-overwrite overwrite x11-common_6.9.0.dfsg.1-6_all.deb
but it tells me that it needs lsb-base first (it would ignore the
overwrite-problem), so first I install lsb-base which ends in:
Richte xfree86-common ein (6.9.0.dfsg.1-6) ...
(Installing xfree86-common).

Now x11-common installs like a charm:
remaxp:/var/cache/apt/archives# dpkg -i
x11-common_6.9.0.dfsg.1-6_all.deb
(Lese Datenbank ... 151236 Dateien und Verzeichnisse sind derzeit
installiert.)
Vorbereiten zum Ersetzen von x11-common 6.9.0.dfsg.1-6 (durch
x11-common_6.9.0.dfsg.1-6_all.deb) ...
Entpacke Ersatz für x11-common ...
Richte x11-common ein (6.9.0.dfsg.1-6) ...
x11-common already in /etc/runlevel.conf: No change.
Setting up X server socket directory /tmp/.X11-unix...done.
Setting up ICE socket directory /tmp/.ICE-unix...done.

Bug#364335: Fwd: Re: Bug#364335: xlibs: Full keyboard support requires a newer kernel

2006-04-23 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello Michel,
This sounds like usual symptoms of XKB not being enabled, which can be
caused by a lot of things.

Thats why I installed the (new) packages libxkbfile1, libxkbui1.

Sorry, not install, but »upgrade«, so the error is only a missing
versioning. (I tend not to upgrade all the libfiles*, unless they are
dragged in by a regular programm). But Etch users should be fine, as
they would run a dist-upgrade.

Greetings

Helge

Denis Barbier, can you review the XKB symbols file submitted, please?

No sorry, I do not understand how to handle Apple keyboards, and they
need a major cleanup, thus I prefer leaving that post-sarge.
OTOH there will already be changes in XKB when switching to xorg, and
Apple layouts are not multi-layout aware, so they can hardly be broken
and I believe that you can add any such layout.

Ok, then I'll see that it gets into the ibook HOWTO-pages, because
right now the default keyboard is simply *broken* (you can access only
the ordinary letters, no [, no { no @). And it looks like every
non-US apple user has to pull his/her own keyboard layout.

The major thing to be decided is weather the ibook/powerbook keyboard
should match the OSX-layout or the PC layout. Since almost no extra
mappings (like [, {) are printed on the keyboard, this is mostly a
political question (a choice preferred, thought).

If you need me to test new keyboard layouts when it is time, please
contact me (but I only have a german ibook).

Thanks for taking care

Helge

Bug#121297: xlibs: German ibook-layout, please apply at least partially

2004-11-15 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Followup-For: Bug #121297
Package: xlibs
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8

I also did not have a proper AltGr key, making typing things like [
difficult. So i copied /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh/de to
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/macintosh/de2 (attached) and corrected the keys.

A few notes:
a) I never used MacOS, hence I chose the symbols ordinarilly appearing
in Linux via AltGr. Only the following keys have a printed third
   (AltGr) code:
   e with Euro sign
   L with at sign
and hence I think it makes no sense

b) In contrast to the other reporter, I have the following function
   key layout:

fn ctrl alt apple space apple ??? arrow keys

c) I left the at sign at L, but doubled it to q where it normally is
available. I use both Apple keys as AltGr, and did not try to use
the ??? key (I have no idea what this key is supposed to do, i
heard it is Mac OS 9-legacy, right now it produces an Enter).

d) Some keys do not print anything, though I defined them, I marked
them with // does not work

e) On my x86 at work, the following additonal AltGr-combinations are
defined. I could not find their name, hence I did not assing them
in the attached file (and I never used them):
AltGr-Rlooks like paragraph sign, instead registered is printed
AltGr-Plooks like a p where the belly has sacked down a little
AltGr-Aon my x86 box the ae-letter is printed, now aring is
  printed
AltGr-Sß is printed, but I did not want to double it
AltGr-Dlike an o, where a diagonal bar is place above it, which
  is crossed by another bar
AltGr-Gx86 has nothing here, left alone from original definition
AltGr-Hx86 has nothing here, left alone from original definition
AltGr-Nx86 has nothing here, left alone from original definition

If you need additional information (photo of keyboard?) please mail
me, I can also try things out. And please apply at least the
assignement of the AltGr-key.

Bug#111264: More testing required?

2004-06-01 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello,
here at work we have several alphas (XP1000) which have the same
graphics board. They also run woody. Is there any sense to check if
the error is reproducible or, given the age of woody, should this bug
be closed (or reconfirmed) when sarge is release.

I know, I should test testing/sid on this, but they are production
machines I cannot switch.

Or, even better, has this bug already been resolved?

Greetings

 Helge

Re: a small C program to test xdm's /dev/mem reading on your architecture

2002-08-26 Thread Helge Kreutzmann
Hello !
I'll run it later on different alphas, but I checked it on a
ppc-machine running AIX if this is of any interest to you:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]: /root # ./readmem.aix.x
Reading data from /dev/mem...
read #2 of 8192 bytes
...
read #1024 of 8192 bytes
done with read of /dev/mem (returned 1).
sumFile() succeeded.

There are 1023 lines starting with read (starting with number 2).

Greetings

Helge
