Bug#900717: xserver-xorg-core: upgrade to 1.20 breaks dosbox mouse capture

2018-06-03 Thread brian m. carlson
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.20.0-2
Severity: normal

After a recent upgrade and reboot, dosbox is no longer able to capture
the mouse in windowed mode, even if explicitly requested (e.g. using
Ctrl-F10). This renders any mouse-using games unplayable. During this
time, X.org has been upgraded, and it appears[0] that X.org 1.20 is the
cause of this issue.

Could you please investigate this issue and if appropriate, upload a
fixed version?

I haven't seen this with 2.6.37-rc5 or 2.6.37, and I have definitely
tried the steps above more recently. If you'd prefer to close this,
that's fine; I can always reopen it if it becomes a problem again.

I'm pretty sure I am, since otherwise the Bluetooth dongle should not
do anything with X at all. That and:

(WW) AllowEmptyInput is on, devices using drivers 'kbd', 'mouse' or 'vmmouse'
will be disabled.

2010-10-29 Thread brian m. carlson
Package: compiz-core
Version: 0.8.4-4
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/compiz

I ran chromium (the browser) under compiz and enabled resource tracking
for https://www.facebook.com/ . Shortly thereafter, compiz exited with:

  Launching fallback window manager

When I started compiz again, and again brought chromium to the front,
compiz exited again. I've not had this problem with any other program.

I still suspend and resume very often (as in, multiple times a day) and
haven't seen this for a while. I reinstalled the driver sometime back
and haven't seen a problem since, so I think you can close this bug.
Thanks for checking.

I have not encountered any problems with powersave=0, and I have
suspended and resumed the machine once. Normally, I would expect to see
problems by now.

I'll test. Do I need to put this on the kernel command line, or can I

Bug#541259: Happens more often with 2.6.31-rc6

2009-08-28 Thread brian m. carlson
This bug happens even more often with Linux 2.6.31-rc6. It now happens
about half the time. Also, could you please inform the upstream bug
that I can reproduce this problem? According to the conversation there,
it's not clear that anyone else sees this problem repeatedly.

I'd also like to ask that you consider applying Ubuntu's patch to the
server, since it fixes the problem (and is good defensive programming
anyway). I realize that it's not the ideal solution, but having the X
server crash at least half the time I resume makes it difficult to
practically use my laptop.

Bug#536523: Cause of this bug

2009-07-20 Thread brian m. carlson
I received an email referring me to
<https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xkeyboard-config/+bug/400718>,
which describes the symptoms accurately. If I disable "Alt is mapped to
Right Win, Super to Menu", everything works correctly. I hadn't noticed
this previously because this is a ThinkPad R60, which doesn't have a
Right Win key.

Bug#536523: compiz: causes Alt to be mostly ignored

> Is it the same for both Alt keys, or does one of them work properly?

Neither one of them works. They are both equally useless.

> Does your session startup invoke xmodmap in any way?

No. There's no .Xmodmap or .Xsession file and .gnomerc doesn't call
xmodmap. GNOME does have some keyboard layout settings, but those are
all reflected in the setxkbmap call I copied in my first mail.

Before I filed this bug report, I did extensive searching of Google and
the BTS to see if there was something that I did wrong in some way or if
this behavior was seen by other people. I couldn't find anything.

This problem probably has been around for a while, but I didn't notice
it except for the fact that Ctrl-Alt-Bksp and Ctrl-Alt-F* didn't work.

Other information which may be relevant:

* Opening a menu using e.g. Alt-F also works.
* In the CompizConfig Settings Manager, I can grab a key sequence that

Bug#536523: compiz: causes Alt to be mostly ignored

2009-07-10 Thread brian m. carlson
Package: compiz
Version: 0.8.2-6
Severity: normal

When I am using compiz, the Alt key does not work, except for GNOME
keyboard shortcuts. Alt-Tab does not work and neither do any of the
compiz plugin shortcuts. Shortcuts that do not require the use of Alt
work just fine, however. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does not work[0], and
neither does Ctrl-Alt-F1 (and similar sequences) to switch VTs. All of
these function correctly when I use metacity instead. They also
function correctly for another user that uses metacity.

I have tried xev, and it correctly reports the KeyPress and KeyRelease
events for Alt. Also, if I am in GNOME Terminal, pressing an Alt key
combination sends an escape sequence to the terminal, but otherwise does
nothing.

However, GNOME keyboard shortcuts work properly: pressing Ctrl-Alt-L to
lock the screen works, and so does Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the shutdown
prompt.

[0] DontZap is set to off in xorg.conf, and terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp is
enabled, so this should work correctly.

Bug#473336: Still reproducible

2009-07-09 Thread brian m. carlson
It's still my experience that compiz uses a very large amount of memory:

PID USER PRI NI VIRT RES SHR S CPU% MEM% TIME+ Command
  32646 bmc 20 0 2244M 20228 2600 S 0.0 0.7 7:07.42
/usr/bin/compiz.real --ignore-desktop-hints --replace --replace core ccp

This causes a large amount of swap to be used and impairs the usability
of the desktop. I'm happy to provide anything that you need to solve
this problem.

No. The driver from unstable is fine with EXA and the one from

Bug#515688: compiz-gtk: does not render minimize/maximize/close buttons with GNOME 2.24

2009-02-16 Thread brian m. carlson

Package: compiz-gtk
Version: 0.7.6-7
Severity: important

I have upgraded my system to GNOME 2.24[0] (from experimental) and after
logging out and logging in, compiz no longer renders the minimize,
maximize, and close buttons which are normally rendered on the right
side of the title bar. However, I can use the menu icon on the left
side of the window normally.

If my mouse hovers over the menu icon, a button (so far, either maximize
or minimize) will appear towards the right of the title bar, but not at
the right edge, as it normally would. The title is centered between the
menu icon and the button, instead of being centered with respect to the
entire title bar.

Obviously, I think compiz should render the title bar as it used to:
with all three buttons visible and placed correctly and the title
fully centered.

A screenshot is available at
<http://crustytoothpaste.ath.cx/~bmc/files/Screenshot.png>; you may find
it helpful.

[0] This includes everything from the 2.24 gnome-desktop-environment
package except seahorse-plugins, which is unavailable.

Bug#456628: compiz: fails to start when POSIXLY_CORRECT is set

2007-12-16 Thread brian m. carlson

Package: compiz
Version: 0.6.3~git20071208.25941d14-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

When POSIXLY_CORRECT is set, compiz fails to start:

lakeview ok % Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 00:02.0 0300: 8086:27a2 (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA])

Checking for texture_from_pixmap: grep: -c: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/compiz: line 153: [: -gt: unary operator expected
not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:

Checking for texture_from_pixmap: grep: -c: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/compiz: line 153: [: -gt: unary operator expected
not present.
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity
metacity: Unknown option --fast-filter

This is because under POSIX, the first non-option argument terminates
option processing, and so the grep invocation produces no valid output
(since -c comes at the end). A patch is attached to reorder the
arguments to grep so that it works even in this case.

Not really; the problem is that GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is
implemented inefficiently. XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps just happens to make it
usable, at the cost of basically disabling 2D acceleration. While the
same workaround could be implemented for EXA, there's little point in
using it (or XAA, for that matter) at all in that case. So there's
really no point in implementing such an option for EXA, compared to just
switching to XAA.

Ah. That explains a lot. However, XVideo doesn't work with XAA, while
it does with EXA. Upstream has no intention of fixing this, AFAIK.
Which means that programs (like miro) that don't allow disabling XVideo
don't work with XAA. Oops.

With the i915tex Mesa driver (or the i915 driver from upstream Git, but
that also requires xserver Git), EXA allows for more efficient
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap together with 2D acceleration, but
unfortunately this is difficult to set up.

How do I enable the i915tex driver? It seems it's already present in
libgl1-mesa-dri.

It works. Where I've normally had problems, I don't now, so I
appreciate your fix (whatever it was).

Thanks.

Bug#366787: xserver-xorg-input-mouse: left/right events when scrolling up/down too quickly

Package: xserver-xorg-input-mouse

Justification: makes mouse scroll wheels almost completely useless

When using my mouse in Firefox, among other applications, scrolling up or down
very quickly generates left and right events instead of the proper ones. Since
I quite often hold down keys for a bit too long, this results in moving forward
and backward in Firefox, instead of scrolling in the desired direction.

Alan Coopersmith, who works on X for Sun Microsystems posted in his blog about
this[0]. There is also an *upstream* patch[1]!

I would greatly appreciate if this could be fixed fairly soon.

Thank you.
