Dual Head stopped working after upgrading to 4.3.0-3 from 4.3.0-2.
The same image is displayed on both screens. Everything works fine again
after downgrading from 4.3.0-3 to 4.3.0-2 with no other changes.
Card information is:
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]
Feel free to contact me for further information.
Thanks.

I don't believe so, I believe this is actually expected behaviour. As far as
I can tell this is what is happening.

 1) From reset the card tries to decided what is connected to both the ports.

 2) If a display is connected to the DVI port that becomes the primary
display and the VGA port the secondary display. Else the VGA port is the
primary and the DVI port is not enabled.

 3) If dual head is then forcibly enabled when it doesn't think that there is
anything connected to the second display it comes up in clone mode. This is
either undocumented behaviour or is a default in the Radeon driver if the
card has failed to autodected over the the DCC connection to the monitor.

In my case I believe the problem was caused by the a KVM switch between the
card and the monitor. DCC seems to be very flaky :/

The workaround of putting the MonitorLayout option just forces the card
into a particular mode so it ignores whatever is comming over the DCC.

I've heard it is possible to damage the card with an incorrect MonitorLayout
line but I can't think of a physical mechanism for this actually happening.

I therefore think that this is worthy of a mention in the documentation for
the radeon driver but is not actually a bug. It might warrent some more
investigation in the radeon driver to see if my hypothesis is correct.

Mr. Gotch, do you mind if I use this text in the Debian X FAQ?

Bug#236197:

2004-04-13 Thread Paul Gotch
I think I have a similar (or the same problem) as the bug submitter.

My Radeon VE has come up in dual head properly once. Every start of X after
that it has come up in clone mode no matter what I do to the XF86Config
file. Unless I am missing something really obvious.

Rebooting doesn't have any effect.

I have the line

(WW) RADEON(1): Only one monitor detected, Second screen will not be created

in my log file which looks suspect. I do have two monitors connected one via
the DVI port and one via the VGA port.

The output of the package specific info for xserver-xfree86 is below.

D'oh I'm missing something semi-obvious. Putting

Option MonitorLayout CRT,CRT

in both device sections causes it to work.

You may want to reopen with a lower priority (since I can just power

Doing so. Thanks for following up.

No problem; it's good to have this information archived (both in the BTS
and on our mailing list), as it may prove useful to others in the
 future.

 Closing as unreproducible per submitter.

That figures (I really hate that Murphy guy) ;-).
Just before I actually run into the problem again
and submitted more information and a workaround.

You may want to reopen with a lower priority (since I can just power
off after whatever happened when I upgrade) and I'm available for any
testing (assuming I can get it to happen again :-( ) if you need it.
Thanks!

I have some trouble to set up dual head on my radeon 9200 card. Could
you send me your XF86Config-4 file so I can use it for reference ?

Thanks

I don't see any obviously relevant changes in 4.3.0-3. A diff between
the logfiles would be interesting.

Speaking for myself, I run Dualhead without any problems on exactly the
