The kernel package maintainer already uploaded 2.6.5-4 with proper fixes.

I also tried downgrading to a 2.6.4 version of the kernel, and it is now
working fine, so it is definitely a 2.6.5-3 kernel bug, since I upgraded
to that simultaneously. In fact, now that I think of it, I restarted X
once after upgrade and it work. The problem only started when I
rebooted, so got new kernel. Should I report bug to the kernel package,
or will it get passed along internally?

Hi,
as pointed already by Michel and Herbert, you need to upgrade
your kernel to -4.

I am closing this bug since it is fixed already.

The cards don't ship any microcode, and the DRM doesn't work without it.

No, Herbert has crippled the kernel packages. Of course, the DDX drivers
could deal better with this, at least the radeon driver does in DRI CVS.
I could dig up a patch, but I'd prefer if those who insisted on
crippling things did...

Oh my. I'm willing to bet this is another CP microcode issue; some cards
are known to ship with bad firmware (IIRC), or exist in such a state
that they're useless with microcode.

This is all a mixture of IIRC and AIUI, and I'll try to test .dfsg when
I get home (dialup sucks), but yeah. It looks like we've crippled
radeon_drv. :(

Bug#246642: new Xfree86 in unstable crashes with ATI Radeon on IBM Thinkpad

2004-04-30 Thread Aron Trauring

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: critical

Description of problem:

When X starts up, it goes into an infinite loop, spewing out the
following error message in the log file endlessly, until / is filled up:

(EE) RADEON(0): RADEONCPGetBuffer: CP reset -1020
(EE) RADEON(0): RADEONCPGetBuffer: CP start -1020
(EE) RADEON(0): RADEONCPGetBuffer: CP GetBuffer -1020
(EE) RADEON(0): GetBuffer timed out, resetting engine...

The full log file is attached (I delete the endless reptitions so file will be
of reasonable size).

Also attached please find the XFree86 configuration file.

Since my system is configured to start gdm upon boot-up, and since this causes
an infinite loop of error messages,
essentially the system is inoperable. I need to ssh in and kill the X server,
but then I no longer have access to the
console window on the notebook.

Software/Hardware configuration:

The system is running kernel 2.6.5-3-686 and is running on an IBM Thinkpad r32 and uses Debian unstable.
I have been running X fine until I upgraded to the newest version of the X files that include the "dfsg" extension.

I attach a file of Debian packages installed on the system which are probably
relevant in some way.

Thanks for your attention to this bug.
