Bug#284764: XFree86 -configure crash

2005-01-20 Thread sandy
dear People:
thank you for your reply. In the meantime, I decided to update my
broken system, by doing:
dpkg --get-selections on a newly updated
Debian system that had a working desk top and
dpkg --set-selections on on the broken machine .
I guess that this forced the instruction
" dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xfree86" to be performed.
my system is now working and the screen looks good.
again,
thank you for your reply.

In my experience, the -configure option simply does not work well in that
version of XFree86.

I think it may be somewhat improved in later versions, but still not enough
that I'd trust it.

I recommend using the xserver-xfree86 debconf interface to configure the X
server, for instance by running the following command as root:

  dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xfree86

I am not sure, however, that the Trident Cyber/BladeXP (the model of
display adapter you appear to have) is well-supported by XFree86 4.1.0.

I do know that, according to http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/Status33.html#33 >, it is *supposed* to be
supported.

You would, therefore, choose the "trident" driver when prompted for your
X server driver.

I was running on the debian cdrom package version 3.0
I ran XFree86 -configure 2>xf.log. My mouse was not recognized.
Today, I updated and upgraded under stable.
When I tried to run XFree86 -configure 2>xf.log,
the system crashed. I had to reboot.
