RE: [Declude.JunkMail] OT: Storage Server (NAS)
We actually moved from Quad Sun V440s to the Supermicros for a weblogic/oracle application that we are running for a client. The numbers range from 45-70% faster on actual throughput and 75+% on database operations. We also brought our install base down from 45 servers to 30 with the Supermicros. I’m pleased with it so far, but we are only about two months into the server change - I haven’t had any hardware issues yet so I can’t say how good their support is if something crashes. - greg From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Matt Sent: Tuesday, May 16, 2006 1:39 PM To: Declude.JunkMail@declude.com Subject: Re: [Declude.JunkMail] OT: Storage Server (NAS) Just out of curiosity, have you benchmarked them against a dual Xeon system? RE: [Declude.JunkMail] OT: Storage Server (NAS)
Stay away from Open-E - it’s closed and proprietary as far as expandability. It’s just Linux in Flash module with a GUI. They charge extra to use a hardware raid controller, faster NICs, and nickel and dime other options too. It only supports a limited choice of approved hardware. If you want Linux, just use Linux. Any linux pro can setup Linux and Samba in under half an hour. If you want a cute Linux appliance, you might consider the new Intel SS4000. Has falconstor OEM Linux software in flash and includes 4 SATA hot-swap drives. But only runs as a NAS , is not AD integrated and is in a minitower form factor versus rackmount. Aimed at the home market but pricier than Buffalo, Iomega, and the other home NAS units. Kevin.. Why don't you go on eBay and pick up a 1 GHz server (HP or Dell). You can pick up a great server for less than $1000 and buy a 2003 Standard and it will all be less than $2K if not $1500. Just an idea.. Old servers will do your job and are still an overkill. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] OT: Storage Server (NAS)
Sorry, that was the SCSI system, this is the SATA system. The price that I quoted includes the CPU, memory and SATA Raid card that you would purchase separately: http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/5015/SYS-5015P-TR.cfm Matt Matt wrote: Open-E makes a flash card pluggable into the IDE slot of a server that has a trimmed down Linux kernel running Samba and some other related software with a nice GUI for managing everything. It supports hardware RAID cards, and also the new version does software RAID. It speaks AD and all other related things. http://www.open-e.com/ I build my servers on Super Micro platforms. They have several 1U systems that hold four SATA drives, some even have redundant power supplies as well. I would go with a dual core P4 system for price since that should be plenty of performance. Minus the drives and software, you can get the following system for about $1,500 shipped: http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/5015/SYS-5015P-8R.cfm Matt Kevin Bilbee wrote: We are looking for a storage server to do our nightly backups to and our desktop user backups. 1U Rack 1gig Ram 4 SATA hot swapable Windows storage server any suggestions?
