RE: [Declude.JunkMail] SSD vs HDD
We used a ramdisk with software called ramdisk plus. -Original Message- From: Stephan Chayer [mailto:scha...@intrasoft.net] Sent: Friday, March 04, 2011 9:42 AM To: Declude.JunkMail@declude.com Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] SSD vs HDD Hello Everyone, I think the question may have been already discussed but I would like to receive some advices for my spool directory. My hard disk access is suffering. Should we use SSD drives or regular HDD. I have heard numerous reliability problems with SSD and I am not sure if we should do it. We have 2 Intel X25-M series handy, should we use them or something else? (SSDSA2MH080G2C1 and G2K5) Thanks Stephan IntraSoft --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list. Dunno what you are using for a controller but if you couple these drives as a controller cache with an adaptec 5805 for example the system will be wicked fast almost regardless of the hdd drives used - as long as they are enterprise class.. -Nick MadRiverAccess.com|Skywaves.com Tech Support US/Canada 877-873-6482 or International +1-802-229-6574 Emergency Support 24/7: supp...@skywaves.net General and Non-Emergency support ticket: https://www.skywaves.com/content/secure/support_ticket.htm From: Stephan Chayer scha...@intrasoft.net Sent: Friday, March 04, 2011 10:44 AM To: Declude.JunkMail@declude.com Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] SSD vs HDD Hello Everyone, I think the question may have been already discussed but I would like to receive some advices for my spool directory. So far we have had good luck with SSD drives in applications like this. Another solution we use on our *nix boxen is tmpfs with a ton of extra RAM. Analogous to a RAM drive on Win* I suppose -but tmpfs will automatically extend itself to physical drives if the size explodes so that's something to watch for. _M -- Pete McNeil, President MicroNeil Research Corporation www.microneil.com 703.779.4909 x7010 --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] SSD vs HDD
I'd second the RAM disk recommendation. You don't need to pay for enterprise-class RAM disk anymore, as the feature is built into Starwind Software's StarPort iSCSI initiator, which is free. We've used it for 2+ years now. -- Sandy --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list.
