While you are at it, do you think you can upload some PNG versions of
the logo?

I think PNG is convenient for use on web sites, in presentations, etc.,
and we avoid the compression artifacts of JPEG (which people otherwise
might use if they try to convert from any of the other formats you listed).

Maybe you could upload them to DERBY-297 and then they could be
committed to the Derby site svn tree.

I just closed DERBY-297 to keep the logo contest itself separate from
final activity. :-)

I suggest creating a new Jira issue.

Roger,

I created DERBY-747 for this (

So, the goal for the logo would be, that people who look at the skin or

I agree with you. After all, what links an elephant with PostgreSql?
(I've got to say that whenever I see an elephant at the zoo now I think
of PostgreSql.)

btw, Roger, I really like the simple, elegant lines in the logo you

The thing with the contest: Look, this content was launched in Spring
04, it took a couple of month to really start the contest and the full
process has or would take near 1 year. So, why don't you want a
decision? The corporate design of the derby project should be here.
Something should be here. Why spend another half year or full year to
decide for a *little* bit better solution, when there are options here.
Take this time to spread the word and the logo. That's the main thing.

For me it's not important, that my submission won. My goal is to help
the project itself. Maybe with ideas or prototypes or whatever. Take the

[RESULT] [VOTE] Apache Derby logo

The polls are closed, and here are the vote results

Logo Number 10 has 67% of the votes and 67% of the binding votes, and
thus is the clear winner. Unless there are any significant objections
from committers, I'll go ahead and update the STATUS file to reflect
this decision.

Re: [VOTE] Apache Derby logo

2005-12-07 Thread Michelle Caisse
I vote for none of the available choices. I think that it is a serious
issue that the use of the word Derby as a type of hat is limited to the
U.S.; that there is no immediate need for the logo; and that extending
the time to submit entries can provide more choice and quality.

My vote: "None of the above".

I do *not* think all the suggestions on the list are "crap" - as a
matter of fact a few of them have very good potential - but I support
the idea (brought forward by Brian Smith) of spending more time trying
to get more people with graphics skills involved in this process. I'd
rather do this than deciding on one logo now and go through the process
of changing to another logo later.

Announcing the logo competition to some graphics communities (if this
has not been tried already), perhaps giving them some pointers to some
of the symbolism we've seen so far (this may include the hat, the
feather, the horse, etc.), might be worth the effort.

However, I *do* think Derby needs a logo in the not so distant future,
and I will definitely be able to live with either of the logos having
received votes so far.

BTW:
I won't dig too deep into the hat discussion, but I certainly heard of
demolition derby long before I heard of the hat - but I guess that's
just me ;) Demolition is probably not a good theme to include in the logo,
though...

IMHO: A derby is a hat and most people, I think, know that. I don't really
mind if the representation of the hat is technically a derby or technically
some other hat or a hybrid.

If you want to get technical based on the following link you provided...

http://www.villagehatshop.com/mens_fur_felt_wool_classics.html

Take a look at the 2 kinds of fedoras: Jaxon Diamond Crown Fedora and
Borsalino Beaver Fedora. The brim of the Jaxon looks more like a derby while
the other Fedoras do not. It looks to me like there is already confusion in
naming hats based on their physical attributes. If hat makers can't work it
out, who will?

Maybe I'm wrong, but #10 looks more like a fedora than a derby, which
might violate a Red Hat trademark. A derby has a distinct rigidity,
making it flat across the bottom, with a narrow brim rounded slightly
up all around, optionally higher on left and right than front and
back. Fedoras are less rigid. If #10 were more obviously a derby/
bowler, I'd vote for it.
