I think the explanatory labels are great! Just be sure that all UI copy follows the guidelines (w.r.t. sentence- vs. Title-case, acronym capitalization and curly apostrophes) at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Guidelines/UIWriting I’d ditch the colon at the end of the heading label “LanguageTool API Settings”. Many of the Office programs are in maintenance mode (Publisher and Access, for instance, had their biggest changes in Office 2010). Italo, our branding is pretty clear in LibreOffice’s Start Center (also one of the first things users see), icons, and About screen. I don’t know why you think is “weak” (whatever that means) as we’ve got coverage in many of the world’s news sources. (Look, I have a reason to call our branding “weak”: TDF decided to unilaterally put there a meaningless, in-your-face number “5”, and throw away our brand colors, without consulting designers who submitted designs.) If we’re to keep an obsolete UI paradign such as the splash screen, it should at least be minimal, as Mirek suggested years ago [1] [1]: https://clickortap.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/citrus-splash.png?w=150=84 2015-10-05 9:27 GMT-05:00 Italo Vignoli <it...@libreoffice.org>: > Are you kidding? Re: [libreoffice-design] New templates contest
Hi Charles-H., it is still mandatory that people release their work to the public domain, as it was the case in the last contest? That was my only gripe at the time, as IMHO it reduced both the quantity and quality of the work received. LibreOffice needs both new and fresh document templates . Whether they are directly embedded and are shipped with LibreOffice or are available on our templates website is not really a topic I do think it’s a topic :-) Right now the Templates site is quite unusable, so I would pursue integrating new templates directly into the downloaded product. Also, we need templates not only for Impress, but for Writer as well — we received none for Writer the last time. -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: design+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-design] Re: Resizability of the dialogs
Jan, I have also seen a report (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=86891) in which a user had the LibreOffice file picking dialog appearing too wide, could not resize it, and I had never made that one non-resizable (my only modification to that one dialog was making it modal, Jay’s suggestion). I don’t think re-enabling resizing would be “the” fix for that. Granted, it could be seen by some users as a regression, but the truth is that many of those dialogs had resizability by mistake (it’s a Glade default) but it just contributed to LibreOffice looking unfinished: resizing, in most of the cases, did not help to actually see more content, it just made the window uglier. (Exceptions are: the Special Character, File picker, and Autocorrect dialogs, among a few others). So far, the “problematic” dialogs have been those of recent .ui conversion, aren’t they? I am aware of the problem appearing sometimes in the Hyperlink and fpicker dialogs, right? Are you aware of others? A correct fix would be to find the thing in the old profiles that’s botching the dialog size, and remove it on migration. Perhaps Caolán, if he finds a little time, could help. If it proves too time-consuming, then you can re-enable resizing, although that should be a last-resort method. Re: [libreoffice-design] Re: NOT shipping the Progress template + misc
I think you're spoiling a few things regarding to fonts :) : 2. The Liberation Fonts. (Yes I know, it's preferable to open another thread as the subject changes but it is closely tied). First of all, you have to know that Liberation fonts are just free copy of MS fonts shipped with MS Office created in order to solve license problems. Liberation Sans -- Arial Liberation Serif -- Times New Roman Liberation Mono -- Courrier New Investigate a bit about typography and tell me if the Liberation typefaces are copies or rip-offs of Microsoft core fonts. I asked last week on the Dev IRC channel, why we cannot use other fonts than Liberation when these are bundled with LibO for age (e.g. DejaVu). Two opposite opinions are emerging from devs. - The first one, we have to keep Liberation as default font is order to keep the same metrics as MS Office. This avoids most of portability problems and differences in page layouts when using files on both office suites. I don't agree with this. LibO has to take its own dev way and not simply continue to develop itself by copying MS. You may not agree, but we're not talking about LibreOffice taking its own way, that's simply ridiculous. We're talking about people's documents. You may hate Microsoft, but LibreOffice needs to maintain interoperatibility. In such a conservative pov, to go any further in the MS metrics, why don't you take the Calibri free copy from Google: Droid Sans? Droid Sans isn't a copy of Calibri, *at all*. Droid fonts are a design by Steve Matteson, as well as the Liberation fonts, commissioned by Red Hat. -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

I can upload my source .xcf, though, and later I can redo it in Inkscape. -- Fitoschido -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
Re: [libreoffice-design] LibreOffice Design: Windows look
I like your concept a lot, but it currently looks too childish with all these strong shadows and thick borders. Something more subtle would be fine. Also, I don’t understand why the apps have that big icon in the top left corner. It is meant to be a button? If so, what it does? -- Fitoschido On Wed, Jun 6, 2012 at 10:27 PM, Shady shady...@gmail.com wrote: Since we are spreaking a lot about the new LibreOffice Look for Windows, I find this the rignt moment to reveal my progress. I was focused on the use of the proper color themes of the LO tools witch gives a unique identity and environment. You can use my work as a base, change whatever is unsuitable and add whatever is missing. I made the mockup for LO Writer and Calc, with these you can guiess what Impress and the other should look like, I can make them if there is the need and the time to. Sorry for the thickness of LO Clac sheet, I didn't mean to make it as so but that's the best I counld do, also I used the previous Windows look Example so I didn't consider the Aero effect, but that's not hard to implement in this design, I may do it later on. Special thanks to Mirek2 for his Windows look Example it is a good base to conceive your design. https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Playground/Windows_look Here is my work, tell me what you think about it. Re: [libreoffice-design] Logo for the LibreOffice Conference 2012 in Berlin
Hello, On Sun, Apr 29, 2012 at 6:47 AM, Andreas Mantke ma...@gmx.de wrote: Hi all, the LibreOffice conference will be held this autumn in Berlin. We need a logo for this conference, that could be used on the website and other marketing material. The proposals for our first LibreOffice conference in Paris could be found here: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/LibreOffice_conference_logo Maybe it is a bit more difficult to create a logo for Berlin because there is no Eiffel Tower ;-) For logo creators: I’d suggest not using clichés like the Eiffel Tower this time. Create something less generic and more meaningful. And please don’t use Helvetica, just Vegur. Re: [libreoffice-design] Call for proposals: New Document
I also don’t think that is necessary to include LibreOffice’s logo into the New Document icon.
Re: [libreoffice-design] Bold and Italic icons
OK, seems to win uppercase. Please try to use a font that makes the bold and italic icons different enough to be recognised, I'd recommend a black weight for the bold icon and a true, single-story italic for the other icon (this is the reason why I don't like Vegur, it is incomplete, does not have italics and IMO is just a Myriad rip-off). The argument for lowercase letters is that bold/italic versions might be easier to differentiate. The arguments for uppercase letters are that they're crisper, fitting more in line with our design goals, and used more commonly (including by our current set). Keep in mind that the decision will impact forthcoming icons concerning text, such as Text Box, Underline, Cross-through, Over-line, Font, Superscript, Subscript, Text Color, etc. Based on this thread, the current votes are: Uppercase: 3 (me, Kévin, Sveinn) Lowercase: 1 (Adolfo) If I've misinterpreted your vote, please speak up, and if you haven't voted, please reply with your vote. Re: [libreoffice-design] Icons: Testing the Design Process
Why abandon the classic symbol paradigm? I don’t think that the proposed symbols are recognizable in a glance anymore. Please go take a look at it. I also submitted rough drafts for three icons: Paste, Cut, and Copy. They're unlike all Cut and Copy icons I've seen so far -- instead of showing scissors and stacks of papers, they use the same symbols as moving an copying with files (an arrow and a plus icon). According to the drafted design process, the icons will be marked approved if nobody answers to this e-mail within a week, so please respond, comment, critique, iterate, so that we can begin to do this. Re: [libreoffice-design] Re: New icon set
Monochrome icons are the way to go. Look[1], even Microsoft has introduced them into Visual Studio (a toolbar-based UI app) and it lloks just great. Re: [libreoffice-design] Re-doing the installer
Just a little observation: I think the question Would you like to associate Office files (doc, [...]) needs to be simplified with a checkbox, removing the (*) Yes ( ) No. Something like: [x] Associate document files with LibreOffice (Note that I also removed the Office files part, because that can be misinterpreted as infringing Office trademark of Microsoft. --Fitoschido On Fri, Feb 17, 2012 at 7:52 PM, Shawn Thompson superfox...@gmail.com wrote: I remember proposing this back when, but now I think we should re-consider it. Anyway, I'm using XAML and VB to mock up a potential redesign for the LibreOffice installer. My idea for interfacing with it would be to have a wrapper for the files (though this time, maybe a 7-Zip one more like Firefox), which would include the MSI and the files for this program. Then this would launch and manage whatever is needed to actually make the MSI file do its thing. http://i.imgur.com/mG6jj.png I personally think that improving and simplifying the installation experience would be a good way to help further increase our accessibility to new users.
