[libreoffice-design] IRC chat
This week's IRC chat will once again take place on Saturday at 16:00 UTC on the #libreoffice-design channel. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend this week, but I'm sure you'll fare well without me. There's a ton of stuff to go through -- especially look at the GSoC projects (it's important to get the developers involved at this point), the progress on adopting Gnome icons, and maybe the new "Windows look" design playground [1]. Hope all goes well. :) [1] https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Playground/Windows_look -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-design] IRC chat
Hi everyone, This week's IRC chat is, as always, scheduled for Saturday, 16:00 UTC. Unfortunately, unless it suits the majority of the active members of the design team, I won't be able to attend this week's IRC chat. If, on the other hand, it would suit anyone (especially Astron and Alex) to move it to Sunday, I would definitely attend. If nobody speaks up before the end of Friday (UTC time), then the chat will take place on Saturday as usual. -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to design+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/design/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-design] IRC chat
Hi everyone, I'm sorry, but I won't be able to make it for today's IRC chat, which will take place as usual. As for topics: - Astron could summarize the discussion on the ESC call and give an icon update - You should look at submitted templates [1], start screens [2], and splash screens [3], go through our design principles [4] to see if they're followed (and, if not, see if we can tweak the submissions to follow them).* Then try to agree on the solutions. With templates, make sure to substitute Liberation fonts for the fonts that were originally used and, when judging, take filesize and topic-independency into account (the more general the topic, the better -- e.g. in this sense, "Lush Green" is better than "DNA"; the smaller the filesize, the better). - Discuss a new default template for Writer. Given the feedback on the proposed one, perhaps this should be a whiteboard-based community effort rather than a closed one. At least we should make a list of things we want to accomplish/fix with this new default template before it's designed. - If you have the extra time, you could look at the tentative designs for whiteboards and look at what can be refined. And perhaps now we could get back to the color picker... * I have a reservation about "ux-consistency" -- it's quite vague and may promote bad UI in the spirit of familiarity. I'm not sure how I'd phrase it better, though. [libreoffice-design] IRC chat + whiteboards
Hi everyone, the next IRC chat will be this Saturday, again at 16:00 GMT on the #libreoffice-design channel. This will now be the official chat time every week. Just like last week, I'm not sure whether I'll be able to attend this chat, and I hope one of you will take over as the moderator if there's need to. Alex, Astron, you've been active in the chats so far as well as on the mailing list, which makes you good candidates. As for whiteboards, we need a) establish whether whiteboards should have owners, b) finish converting old whiteboards to the whiteboard template, c) determine the process each whiteboard should go through. To get B done, we need to contact some of the creators, as they can best formulate what the original goal of the whiteboard was. Christoph Noack has authored "DocumentCheck", "Calc Range Names", "Progress Indicators", and "Find bar". Christoph, if you're reading this, could you tweak those whiteboards to follow the new whiteboard template, or at least tell us if you don't have the time? I don't remember seeing Daud, Michelr, or S.Gecko anywhere on the mailing list recently, and their last wiki contributions date back a few months, so I assume they're not active anymore (correct me if I'm wrong), which means that we need to tweak the "Styles and Formatting window", "Macros dialogs", and "MenuIdeas" whiteboards ourselves. AFAIK, Paulo José is no longer active, so we also need to tweak "Writer Status Bar Remaking". Alex, about the "Table styles" and "Templates and documents rework" pages, the open points should be on the mailing list and not on the whiteboard. Within Scope, there really should be no wishes or maybes: if it's a requirement for all proposals, put it into scope; if it's not, make it part of your own proposal. Also, let others contribute their own proposals before you move the status to "design taking shape". Astron, on your "PropertiesButtonLayout" page, the summary should only state the goal of your whiteboard, such as "Improve dialog usability". It should be a single design-oriented goal and it shouldn't suggest the solution (that's what the Proposal section is for). "Current state" should be at the top of Relevant art. As the whiteboard seems to apply to dialogs in general, I'd put in in the HIG section. We also need to figure out how we're going to shape our HIG.

Re: [libreoffice-design] IRC chat
Hello all, I won't be there for the chat now. In any case, here's the ESC update: + please keep using the Windows button order on dialogues converted to UI files + ftr, that order is: [OK][Cancel] (or more generally: [primary button][secondary button]) + at some point in the future, Caolan (or someone else) might attack the problem of automatically adjusting the button order for the present OS + it was remarked that it'd be great if more designers attended the next hackfest I think those are the most interesting things for now. Everything else should also be in the official minutes. It's not at the top because it serves as inspiration for the new design. "Relevant art" is the section every designer should visit before contributing his design. If the revision is an update of a UI element in LibreOffice, it is implied that all its current features are preserved (unless the designer determines they belong elsewhere in the UI or if a feature is counterproductive). If this isn't apparent, put "preserve current feature" or "preserve ..." Of course, but most of the Paulo Jose's page is an analysis of what we have. Ah, well... is the inspirational value of the designs that we want to replace really that high? Re: [libreoffice-design] IRC chat + whiteboards
Yah I really don't u.understand the scope, and what's in/out of scope. When I wrote the whiteboards that I did, I just wrote what I thought the scope was and hopes if it was wrong that someone will correct it. I'll ask the team about it next time. But till then could you describe it. >As I understand it, under Kendy's proposal, the status bar would still be >available under "View" but just hidden by default. WOW I had compleatly forgot about this whiteboard. I could do it seance before I did anything all it was, was just suggesting something like the Microsoft/fire fox button, then I put my stuff in there. I don't know about the rest of the team, but I no longer like my proposal for this. basically I was trying to cope everything that M$ office had in their ribbons. but I could not figure out a good way to put more then two "tabs" in the tool bar. shortly after I made this I found Mireks mockups and totally abandoned my ideas. If you think that this is still something that we should considder then ill rewrite it. but I don't even think it should be archived. just deleted.

[libreoffice-design] IRC chat & pop-ups
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi everyone, from Friday on I'll probably have internet access again, so maybe we could have an IRC meeting on Saturday. Things that we might discuss - - whether the improved color handling could be done for 3.7 and whether to add Tango colors / gradients - - should we change the default shape color to Tango Sky Blue 1 and the border color to tango Skype Blue 2 or 3 - - should the shape icons be blue, too? - - Widget Layout: I already tried experimenting with a converted dialog in Glade and it's pretty easy. We should decide if we want to move button columns (cf.e Insert > Object > OLE Object) to the bottom and convert them to rows. Two clicks in Glade and we'd have more coherent dialogs. One thing that would be pretty nice and should take to long to be developed: - - Implementing those pop-ups that the color buttons have for bullets/numbering as well as masterpages I think they don't interrupt the workflow as much as a dialog, which pops up and maybe hides the content one is working on. Michel had made a mockup quite some time ago (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/User:Michelr). I'd prefer to have small pictures like in the dialog instead, but I guess that's not a big issue. Do you think it's realistic that this could be implemented for the next release? Re: [libreoffice-design] IRC chat + ESC update
Hi all, On Fri, 2012-12-14 at 13:25 +0100, Mirek M. wrote: > If you can attend, though, please reply, and perhaps list some things you'd > like to discuss. Well, I will be able to attend. I think I'd like to discuss the Impress Remote app for Android again, as well as the feedback form, maybe branding, too... and some other current things... Finally, late as always, the update from the ESC call: * everyone really busy – not a terribly good time to come up with random new UI improvement requests, sadly * discussion about state of template manager (see details in the official minutes, nothing new though, if you followed the discussion Cedric) * I tested the Android remote a bit – after some initial connexion troubles, it actually works quite well now * LibO 4.0 will not allow saving in the Word/Excel 5/6/95 formats – opening files in these formats will still work, though Astron.
