Someone in the issue says that it's very unusual in Mac. That is something I've no idea about. Others? That's true. We could forego the icons on the Mac, then, as they also have command search, thus there's less need to look through the menus efficiently. Ubuntu has the HUD. No need for icons there too? No need for icons there too? Is it even possible to have icons in the Unity menus? (Sorry, I don't use Unity.) I honestly don't think that icons will make menus more or less usable. The human brain can interpret known symbols faster than it can read text, as icons are more easily recognizable than text (there's more variety in shape and color).
