I hope this will help some others beginners like me, and if someone

Hi,

The new ubuntu logout dialog does not respect the cofiguration in
/etc/default/acpi-support

If suspend is disabled via the line ACPI_SLEEP=tru in /etc/default/acpi-
support the new logout dialog still offers the option to sleep

Gnome-power-manager also does not respect this setting.

I imagine the behavior is the same for hibernate but I have not tested
this.

Sorry if this has been posted under the wrong package I could not find

[Bug 39640] Re: [2.0beta3] gaim: status pulldown menu is half empty (drawn offscreen)

2006-04-16 Thread Richard Laager
I think this should be rejected unless there's a compelling reason that Gaim
should override the GTK+ default. This issue would probably be better argued
with the GTK+ maintainers, as it affects all GTK+ apps. It just happens
commonly with Gaim, as the status selector is at the bottom of the window,
which many people align with the bottom of their screen.

That said, it's possible to have the .gtkrc changes apply to just this widget
in Gaim.

[Bug 38149] Re: setting a default printer does not work

Further: Redid my whole cups setup.

1. Removed all the policy stuff from cupsd.conf. This allowed

2. stopped cupsys

3. deleted /etc/cups/printers.conf, /etc/printcap and, importantly,
/var/cache/cups/remote.cache (this is key)/

4. How everything works *until I change something using gnome-cups-manager*,
which rewrites /var/cache/cups/remote.cache, may cause cups to crash, and, on

[Bug 39745] gnome-screensaver lacks "Settings..." button, or equivalent

2006-04-16 Thread Conrad Knauer
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I use the Boxfit screensaver from xscreensaver-data-extra; in
xcreensaver there is a "Settings..." button that allows me to tweak
Boxfit's settings (e.g. all circles, etc). This is lacking in gnome-
screensaver.

This appears to be a case where gnome took the controls from a program
with perhaps more settings than were needed and stripped it down to the
point where it lacks certain basic functionality.

If they don't want to include a button for settings, maybe allow them to
be accessed via a right-click of the name of the screensaver?

If gnome-screensaver is going to be a dependency of ubuntu-desktop, it
should have this functionality; if not, it should be replaced with
xscreensaver, or a derivative with an intermediate amount of settings.

[Bug 26933] Re: Browsing SAMBA shares impossible

2006-04-16 Thread Erich Pawlik
One thing that might be related to this bug:

If I try to add an smb printer via gnome-cups-manager, a login box pops up
asking me to log into "Avigato" which is the workgroup name. There is no
security setup requiring to log into the workgroup (I don't know whether this
is even possible). Could it be that somewhere is the expectation that you need
to log into a domain controller?

[Bug 39749] [Dapper] gnome-cups-manager aborts when adding a smb printer

2006-04-16 Thread Erich Pawlik
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-cups-manager (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I am running an up-to-date version of Dapper (as of April 16, 2006) on a
Dell Inspiron 4150 notebook. No local printers are hooked to the
notebook. I did install two smb printers with previous versions of
Dapper. The network is a small office network (Windows network peer-to-
peer, no domain controller, 4 hosts).

I was trying to install another printer on a Windows box via smb.

After I did select "Windows Printer (SMB)" in step 1 of the "Add a
printer" assistant, a dialogue box pops up saying

"Authentication Required"

Identity and Password for AVIGATO
Username:
Password: ...

AVIGATO is the workgroup name containing the 4 hosts on the Windows
network.

There is no authentication setup for the workgroup, so this box
shouldn't come up at all.

When pressing "connect" in the dialogue box, the assistant aborts with
the message "The Application gnome-cups-add has quit unexpectedly."

[Bug 34603] Re: Clock can't display international date format

2006-04-16 Thread Tero Karvinen
Gnome Clock format can't be changed in gconf-editor, even though it has keys
for that.

$ gconf-editor
Edit:Find: "clock"

/apps/panel/profiles/default/applets/clock/prefs/format
Key description: "If set to "custom", the clock will display time
according to the format specified in the custom_format key."

/apps/panel/profiles/default/applets/clock/prefs/custom_format
Key description: "This key specifies the format used by the clock applet when
the format key is set to "custom". You can use conversion specifiers understood
by strftime() to obtain a specific format."

I set
- format: "custom"
- custom_format: "%x %X"
Removed clock in panel, then put it back. Logged off and on. Still, clock
format does not change.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2006-04-16 Thread Conrad Knauer
At 2006-04-14 21:50:05 UTC George wrote: "install xscreensaver and remove gnome
screensaver"

In Dapper, gnome-screensaver is a dependency of ubuntu-desktop and so it cannot
be uninstalled without consequenses. Right now I have both installed; this is
a sub-optimal solution.

I would recommend that the Ubuntu developers either make their own reduced
version of xscreensaver or transplant this feature into Ubuntu's version of
gnome-screensaver.

As it exists now, gnome-screensaver is oversimplified to the point of being
barely usable.

[Bug 39127] Re: Does not cooperate with unrar-free

2006-04-16 Thread Vassilis Pandis
Yes, I know about rar. But according to
http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/non-free/u/unrar-nonfree/unrar-nonfree_3.5.4-1/unrar.copyright
rar is not free. While it is true that it is quite superior to unrar-free , I
do not think that file-roller should only use rar. I don't know how file-roller
handles the application choice, but I don't see why one would have to resort to
the CLI because they chose to use a free package.

Ideal situation:
If unrar-free is present and unrar is not, then file-roller should use
unrar-free.

If rar is present but unrar-free is not, use rar.

If unrar-free and unrar are present, ask which to use. Maybe with 'rar' being
the default choice.

I think what I'm saying is quite reasonable, so I would appreciate it if this
bug stayed open.

[Bug 34603] Re: Clock can't display international date format

2006-04-16 Thread Tero Karvinen
Can set a custom date format with
$ gconf-editor
search: applet_
Find clock applet among about 5 applets.
Change for example 2006-04-16 16:39 Sun w15
custom_format: "%x %H:%M %a w%W"
format: "custom"
Clock format changes immidiately.

When format is "custom", Clock applet, right click: Preferences shows a dialog
to edit custom format. This only works once, after that it must be edited in
gconf-editor.

Copy date does not work.

I did not yet find a way to put short localized date in it: "%x %X" shows
seconds, even if show seconds is not selected, and even if 'ls' shows only
minutes with the same LC_DATE.

[Bug 39768] Screen + especially irssi in screen dies randomly

2006-04-16 Thread Brad Whittington
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Unfortunately this bug is very sporadic, and possibly is traceable to
either of the three.

After a random period the screen containing irssi becomes completely
blue, and text is muddled up. Some times this is fixed with a simple ^L,
but other times it requires disconnecting from the screen, and rejoining
to the screen.

While not easily reproducable, the bug does not seem to occur in any
other popular term emulating software (konsole, aterm, xterm, etc.)

if it resides in screen it is beyond the ubuntu/debian package, because
I have observed the problem in a gnome-terminal running an ssh session

[Bug 34596] gparted should read "Partition Editor" in menu

2006-04-16 Thread Tim Fuchs
I'll just quote the HIG here:

"1.1.2. Only put useful information in the menu name

Do not include words like "GNOME", "X Window System", "GTK+" or other platform
details in Application menu names. The user probably already knows what
platform they are using, and if they don't, then application names are not the
right place to inform them."

[Bug 39776] Ingnores locale LC_CTYPE

2006-04-16 Thread Tero Karvinen
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Gnome-terminal ingnores locale LC_CTYPE.

To reproduce
1) Set LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.UTF-8", described in detail on
http://myy.helia.fi/~karte/english_in_finland_on_ubuntu.html

2) Applications: Accessories: Terminal (gnome-terminal)

3) $ echo "This is one word: päivää"
Double click between "iv".

What should happen: "päivää" should be selected, because it is one word.
"Päivää" is hello in Finnish.

What actually happens: "iv" is selected.

What causes it: gnome-terminal ignores LC_CTYPE, and has it's own list
of characters in gconf. 'gconf-editor', /apps/gnome-
terminal/profiles/Default/word_chars is set by default to
"-A-Za-z0-9,./?%&#:_". Instead of a list, gnome programs should respect
locales.

[Bug 35702] Re: evolution can't sign email after running for a long time

2006-04-16 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Maybe you could install evolution-dbg evolution-data-server-dbg and try to
figure what happens using valgrind? Those leak bugs are not easy to debug
without a log and it doesn't happen for me by example. To use valgrind you just
have to install the package with that name and run "valgrind
--trace-children=yes --log-file=valgrind.log evolution". That makes the
application really slow but is useful to know where the leak happens exactly

[Bug 20939] Re: evolution doesn't use seahorse-agent when started by hotkey instead of gnome-panel or shell

2006-04-16 Thread Reinhard Tartler
err, seahorse is an gnupg key agent, not an SSH agent.

By default, ssh doesn't set environmnet variables, but edits ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf
to make gpg processes to use the correct agent socket.

seahorse agent can also be started with parameter -v, which makes it behave
like ssh agents: Spit out commands so that GPG_AGENT_INFO gets set. This is not
done by default, AFAIK.

[Bug 35141] Re: Counterintuitive shutdown behaviour

2006-04-16 Thread Alvin Thompson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 33820 ***

while this change may work well for you, you're not considering the people
whose power buttons are in much more accessible locations (for example, laptop
users have their power buttons right on the keyboard). in these cases
accidently pressing the power button is common. i can't tell you how many times
i've lost work because i accidently pressed the button and there was no
confirmation.

as for your analogy, you can't usually lose hours of work by switching off the
TV or lamp, so the interface can be simpler. on things where it's important not
to turn off/on accidently, you have to confirm things. a better analogy would
be an alarm system; you have to punch in your code and possibly override some
regions to turn it on/off.

please do NOT remove this feature!

this sort of thing is exactly why it's better to discuss a change of features
on the mailing list with other users before submitting a bug. you may find that
there is a valid reason to keep things as they are or that you have less
support for the change than you thought you did. you're basically trying to
argue that your priorities are more important than someone else's, and before
you do that you should at least try to get some consensus. this will save
developers some time...

[Bug 39787] Second CPU Frequency Scaling does not work

2006-04-16 Thread petrme
Public bug reported:

Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I've installed Dapper on an Intel Centrino Duo (T2300) laptop which has
two CPU cores.

I use the GNONE applet "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor" to check how CPU
frequences are changing when under load.

First, I activated the left-click menu "Governors/Frequencies". To do so, I
run the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gnome-applets

But all changes done via "Governors/Frequencies" menu are set only for
the first CPU core (CPU 0). It does not care what "Monitored CPU" is
selected in Preferences.

[Bug 39458] Re: Beagle-support in yelp should be removed.

2006-04-16 Thread Phil Bull
I can confirm that this is still an issue with yelp 2.14.1-0ubuntu1 and beagle
0.2.4-0ubuntu1.

If beagled is running when yelp is started, yelp uses the beagle search
backend. According to its logs, Beagle receives the query but doesn't find
anything. If beagled isn't running, yelp uses its default search and gets some
results.

It doesn't look like Beagle crawls the documentation (only ~), so it's no
suprise it doesn't find anything. I agree with the initial reporter that beagle
support should be removed from the yelp package until another solution can be
found (as beagle support is useless at the moment anyway). It's confusing to
find no search results for queries like 'ubuntu' and not everyone is going to
know that beagle is to blame. Although beagle is optional, many people are
likely to install it due to its popularity, experience this bug, then seek
support or file this same bug again and again

I'm bumping this up to 'minor' as a result, seb :)

PS: Could you maybe consider recommending a reboot after a nvidia-package
update?
Because the nvidia kernel module and the nvidia-client library will be
different so that opengl applications refuse to work unless rebooted /
restarted xorg and reloaded the nvidia module.

This is my first bug report, I hope it was sufficient.

[Bug 37383] Re: [Dapper] time-admin doens't switch off synchronisation with time servers

2006-04-16 Thread Erich Pawlik
Setting UTC=no doesn't solve this particular bug report. Using UTC=no has a big
disadvantage right now (see Bug #33968), but I can work around that bug for
the timne being as well (restarting networking does the trick).

This bug report is about a inconsistency in handling time services with
UTC=yes. This inconsistency might be related to bug #33968, but up to now, I
don't have any evidence for this.

Regards

Erich Pawlik

Yes the index issue is ALSO bug #39456. But multiple fixes are necessar in
order to get doc-indexing running. Please read all reports I've referenced in
this report.

Sorry about the multiple replies. Hm, perhaps an epiphany-bug...
