[Bug 36862] Re: Visual inconsistency with selecting printer manufacturer
Phew, it's a bit hard to grasp actually. My feeling of this list being inconsistent with the rest of Ubuntu mostly revolves around it being a multi-columned dropdown list with no way of choosing a manufacturer by beginning to type its name. This bug is still present in 2.14.1-0ubuntu4 (dapper fully updated in 17-apr-2006). What happens is: if you send an icon to desktop and rename it, it will work, as it will change the icon caption at the "Name=" line, not in your locale. [Bug 33002] Re: logout dialog UI objections
I thought about this thing while reading Andreas Post in the Forums. I have no real preference for any of the dialogs, but I want to share my thoughts. I think there are basically two motivations, which can drive the user to end his session: 1. he wants to change the state of the PC (reboot, shutdown, hibernate etc.) 2. he wants to change the state of the session (lock screen, logout, change user) this two topics are not really connected to each other and therefore you can set a default for each, which will be chose after a timeout. I'd choose shutdown and lock screen - I think this is the best choice for the user if he "forgets" what he initially wanted to do. You are alreadyrespecting this by putting the according buttons in two seperate lines - so why not make two seperate dilogs out of it and gaining the default preset wished by Soren Hauberg. -- logout dialog UI objections https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/33002 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 33002] Re: logout dialog UI objections
I am sorry if what I'll be saying might sound blunt, but I find the new logout dialog totally useless and very, very inconsistent. Not only is its layout not in keep with gnome's HIG, but what I find disturbing is that it lacks consistence: - why not provide all the options straight in the gnome's system menu? right now, in the system menu we have "lock screen" and "logout", I wonder what makes the "lock screen" action so special to have a right to sit there while, for example, "logout", "change user" "reboot" etc. haven't this right - most of all, why should the "logout" button in gnome's system menu bring up this dialog rather than doing what it should be supposed to do i.e. logout the user? - last day my father was using my pc to browse the web, think of him as your average non-tech savvy person in his sixties... I told him to "shutdown the pc when done"... Well, what he did was looking for some option in the "system" menu, and this is good, but he then called for help 'cause he couldn't find any "shutdown" option... and remember most users, accustomed to "some OS" out there which lack multi user support, don't even know what "logging out" is all about, hence they would never click on "logout" in the first place. So please, why not make things easier for both the end users and you, the developers: I would reccomend you got rid of that logout thing and provide all the options straight in the "system" menu, forgive me for not appreciating the effort some of you guys put on that logout dialog but I think the outcome, well, is simply subpar with the level of excellence dapper is reaching... as a side note, the "cancel" button gets slightly resized when, hovering over the buttons with the mouse pointer, the text describing the highlighted option spans over two lines... not good at all... sorry but i am very picky when it comes to gtk finesse =) regards, andre -- logout dialog UI objections https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/33002 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 39328] Re: Offer option to disable scroll wheel on task list
At least for me, the panel ends up being more of an issue than other places we use scrolling for non-text (like in tabs). The panel is a natural "resting" place for one's mouse. Also, I've found that I often use the lower-right-hand corner of the trackpad as a starting place to scroll. The panel is the *ONLY* place I ever accidentially scroll using my laptop. One (somewhat) odd thing: on a trackpad, the most natural motion to switch windows would be scrolling along the *bottom* of the trackpad, left to right or right to left. [Bug 19247] Re: Hang on connection to FTP, with cancel
Since this is 100% reproducible for me, I did a network trace of the whole operation; the result showing that the FTP server (vsftpd 2.0.3) never replied with a 226 on the control channel. The full 712638468 bytes were transferred, followed by a FIN/ACK data channel connection closure initiated by the FTP server. I'll try and pinpoint the vsftpd problem, and possibly file a bug report if it's still in 2.0.4. My previous statement stands - connection->timeout should not be NULL when waiting for data from the FTP server. BTW now that I re-read the original reporter's problem, I see that this is probably a different issue. [Bug 37350] Re: Pressing power button unlocks locked screensaver
I found out how to enable the screen locking on resume. It is done by setting the locking on when screensaver is active. However there are other problems with this setting. After resume, when I have entered my password and the screen unlocks the next thing that happens is that the same screen pops up which comes when pressing the power button. >From there I have to push the Cancel to get my desktop back. So it seems there are still unsettled issues with this gnome-screensaver. -- Pressing power button unlocks locked screensaver https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/37350 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 27919] Re: Switching workspace: redraw is slow
On a separate dapper install (using the same /home directory, though), on the same machine, the problem still exists. So, it seems unlikely that this is a configuration problem. If I get the chance I will attempt to move the hard drive and video card over to another computer, to see if that makes a difference. If not, I may try a fresh install on a separate computer using the same video card. Problem is, I'm not sure if I have access to another computer, at this time, that will take that video card. [Bug 37350] Re: Pressing power button unlocks locked screensaver
This doesn't happen to me (using Flight 6 on MSI S250 laptop). I tested this by locking the screen and suspending the machine with sleep button. Also hibernated it via lid close. Both times when I resumed the session the lock screen came right back. Power button did not have any action here.
