Thanks for your bug. Does it happen if you use the screensaver? totem

screensaver do you use, gnome-screensaver or an another one? Do you use
totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? Does it happen if you play a movie with

[Bug 66355] Re: gpilotd locks up my Palm Z22

2006-10-16 Thread Daniel Holbach
It can be useful to figure out if the problem is with gnome-pilot or the lower,
pilot-link, layer. To isolate (assuming you have pilot-xfer installed) try the
following:
   1. Kill gpilotd (you may need to remove the pilot applet from the panel, and
then do killall gpilotd from a terminal window).
   2. Now try running pilot-xfer: pilot-xfer -p /dev/pilot -l (or '-p
/dev/ttyUSB0', or '-p /dev/ttyUSB1', or '-p net:', etc)
   3. If that doesn't work, then you have most likely got a problem with your
kernel/udev/usb/cables, etc, not gnome-pilot.

It can also be useful to see the output from the gpilotd daemon. To do this:
   1. Kill gpilotd (you may need to remove the pilot applet from the panel, and
then do killall gpilotd from a terminal window).
   2. Restart gpilotd (/usr/bin/gpilotd).

[Bug 65857] Re: Change Help menu link to help.ubuntu.com

2006-10-16 Thread Matthew East
So the url as things are currently in my local copy will be
https://help.ubuntu.com/6.06/book/book-toc.html. I haven't added it to
what will be https://help.ubuntu.com/6.10/etc because I see that the
material is aimed at Ubuntu 6.06. Let me know if I need to do that.

This is all a bit of a mess - the help menu in Ubuntu is really not
designed to make it easy for users to figure out where to get help, I'll
try and draw up a spec with mpt to make the help menu more usable for
the next release.

[Bug 66262] Re: Human login screen doesn't specify a font size for the input field

2006-10-16 Thread Simon Law
Sorry, didn't see that fix for bug 36251.

I want to assert that the resolution for that bug is flawed. The
canonical font for Human seems to be "Bitstream Vera Sans" and not
"Sans".

Also, the input box is too small for "Bitstream Vera Sans 12". If we
want to use a 12-point font face, then you'll have to make the input box
larger. Otherwise, drop it to a 10-point face.

Thanks!

** Summary changed:

- Human login screen doesn't specify a font size for the input field
+ Human login screen specifies the wrong font face for the input field

** Description changed:

- The Human login screen just relies on the default font size for the
- input field. Since the dimensions of that field are constrained, it may
- appear to be too small to contain the text.
+ I want to assert that the resolution for bug 36251 is flawed. The

[Bug 64248] No Network on Edgy Desktop CD PPC on PowerBook G4 17

2006-10-16 Thread xermán
Public bug reported:

While on Live Mode I can modify the Network preferences on "System ->
Administration -> Network", these will not be kept once closed the
preference pane.

Moreover:
1. I set network preferences for my local network (LAN)
2. Save these preferences in a Location
3. Activate the location
4. Try to acces internet with no success

Weird, as gateway is not kept in network preferences, but selecting the
saved Location, gateway IP appears.

Weird, as I can navigate LAN, can ping any device on the LAN, even the
gateway, but can not reach outside the gateway.

[Bug 10905] Re: Impossible to switch desktop when an applet menu is unfolded

2006-10-16 Thread Aaron Whitehouse
Right. So no hotkeys or function keys work when a menu or applet is down
and it is a design choice. I personally don't think that leaving it at
that is really the optimal solution.

I can't think of any of the hotkeys in question being used in the menus,
but I'll accept that it is possible. Wouldn't the better solution be to
allow global hotkeys, but to give priority to the menu/applet if any of
them happen to set Fn+PrntScrn etc as a shortcut?

[Bug 66399] primary selection replace

2006-10-16 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

This is not as much a bug as a feature request:

-Now, if you select some text by dragging the cursor while the left-
button is pressed, it goes to the primary clipboard (I think that's the
proper name). Then, if you hit the middle-button on a text field, it
gets pasted.

-On the other hand, selecting text by dragging the cursor while the
middle-button is pressed is not possible.

My idea is to allow middle-button selection, which would result in
REPLACING selected text with the contents of the primary clipboard.

My user example: if I want to copy epiphany's location bar's content to
a different epiphany window I have to select it, then place the cursor
at the end of the other window's location bar and backspace my way to
the beginning; in my ideal world, I would select it, then middle-select
the text on the other location bar, which would be replaced with the
desired contents.

Not sure if I made myself clear. Did I?

[Bug 65820] Ugly fonts in gtk apps under edgy KDE (kubuntu)

2006-10-16 Thread Kubicle
Public bug reported:

Background:
This 'bug' is present on two of my machines (the ones that have edgy), both of
them were upgraded from dapper (both worked fine with dapper). I may have toyed
a bit with the other machine, but the configuration on the other is untouched
(since upgrading from working dapper)

Problem:
Fonts on GTK applications (like synaptic) are not anti-aliased (smooth), but
very grainy.
This happens with both user and root (with sudo). I use the Freesans font, but
the problem persists with a couple of other fonts I've tried (including
BitStream font). Some apps (like OpenOffice) work fine (though I think OO uses
it's own font settings)

What I've tried:
I haven't touched the other machine, but on the other I've tried tinkering with
the configuration files, tried different fonts and settings with kcontrol and
gconf-editor (which also has grainy fonts) with both user and sudo...to no
avail.

Notes:
- Neither of the machines have gnome installed
- The fonts look fine if I start a gtk app on a dapper machine (through ssh)
- The bug looks similar to one mentioned by Michael S. in comments of this bug:
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/gtk-qt-engine/+bug/54552

I'll gladly provide more information if asked to.

[Bug 23599] switching keyboard layouts should work for the "whole desktop" by default, not just single windows

2006-10-16 Thread Philipp Schroeder
Public bug reported:

This isn't really bug, rather, I suggest that the default behaviour is
changed.

Steps to reproduce
1. Add a second keyboard layout in System > Preferences > Keyboard
2. Add 'keyboard indicator' to the gnome panel
3. Change kb layout by clicking on the keyboard indicator
4. Start typing in an application (e.g. console, or text editor, or browser)

Expected behaviour: The indicated keyboard layout should work for the "whole
desktop", i.e. I should be able to type with the same keyboard layout across
multiple applications - e.g. write an email, lookup a word through the firefox
search engine, continue to write the email, etc.

Current behaviour: Selecting a particular keyboard layout only works for the
first application I use. If I click on another window, the indicator flips back
to the alternate keyboard layout (and the keyboard behaviour for that particular
window is flipped back too). Thus, I need to toggle the keyboard layout for
every individual application, instead of just once for the "whole desktop".

BTW, you currently *can* change this behaviour *manually* in the System Tools >
Configuration Editor:

navigate to Desktop > Gnome > Peripherals > Keyboard > General
uncheck 'groupPerWindow'

After this, switching the keyboard layout works for all windows, rather than
just the active one.

This should be the default, IMHO.

think the easiest way to get a development environment is to run "sudo apt-get
build-dep $somepackage", not exactly ideal.

Some form of official ubuntu development package to pull in a supported
development environment would be fantastic. This of course brings up some
larger questions that even the GNOME community itself struggles with (eg, which
IDE) and would require no small amount of work to integrate the tools that have
already been chosen (eg, making all docs findable from the Yelp UI).

[my $0.02USD on tools would be Monodevelop and Monodoc... it would of course
require someone built AddOn's for MonoDevelop to support non-clr environments
like straight C, C++ and Python, and it would require a lot of work with
existing docs to get them into Monodoc... but I think Monodevelop has the most
potential to be a powerful tool for many different environments given its
extension architecture and the many languages that can be used to extend it]

[Bug 66403] Gnome terminal won't load (amd64, nvidia driver, xinerama)

2006-10-16 Thread jamespharaoh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

When running the nvidia proprietry drivers on my amd64 installation of
ubuntu edgy, with xinerama enabled over 3 monitors (2 cards) gnome-
terminal won't run.

I understand this may be to do with the nvidia driver but there is an x
error so I'd like to look into it as far as possible and if it leads
there i'll contact them directly.

Disabling xinerama fixes the problem, running the open source drivers
seems to but I haven't managed to get the system set up right with them
anyway so that point is kind of moot.

Anyway, I've been trying to generate a stack trace but I seem to be
missing lots of symbols. Can anyone suggest what to do to get some more
information here?

[Bug 27170] Desktop doesn't seem to get focus when switching virtual desktops

2006-10-16 Thread Manu Cornet
Public bug reported:

Here's a short test :

1) Get one of your virtual desktop completely clean by closing all windows on
it, so that the desktop appears.
2) Create a new folder on the desktop, name it "blah". Or "bloh".
3) Click on the folder to make sure it is selected. If you want to delete this
folder, you can just press the "Del" key (test now if you're unsure).
4) Switch to another virtual desktop, then back to this one. The folder seems be
still be selected.
5) Press the "Del" key to delete the folder : nothing happens.

What should happen : the desktop should get the focus back, and one shouldn't
need to click again on the icon to get the folder selected.

I am using an up-to-date breezy, not sure which package I should file this
against, though (nautilus ? lbwnck ? ).

[Bug 65971] Re: Gnome 2.16 crashes after loading some apps

2006-10-16 Thread Luca Falavigna
It would be very useful if you can attach a backtrace of it. In order to do so,
you can login in a virtual console and launch the following command:
gdb /usr/bin/gnome-session -p pid_of_your_gnome-session

Once you reach gdb prompt, type the following instructions:
handle SIGKILL nopass stop print
handle SIGQUIT nopass stop print
cont

Now you can use your GNOME session normally and, when crash occours, you can
switch to the virtual console and obtain a backtrace with the following
instructions:
backtrace
info regs
thread apply all backtrace

Those informations will be very useful to triage this bug.
