[Bug 68991] USB devices desktop icons not popping up

2006-10-29 Thread Tomasz Grzegurzko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Placing a USB stick in the computer doesn't show the icon on the desktop
for the stick. It seems to be fully detected otherwise. This is fresh

[Bug 68996] xfs partition problem (Edgy 6.10)

2006-10-29 Thread Mitch Mahan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

When trying to install XFS from the 6.10 CD on a new system I selected
XFS as my / drive and another partition for swap space. Selected
forward...

Since / is not allowed to be mounted on an XFS volume I then went back
into gparted (Backward) changed my XFS volume to the Standard ext3 and
tried to proceed with the install. Everything seemed to go alright.
gparted was partitioning my volume with ext3 but when loading the next
step it gave me the same error Cannot mount / on an XFS volume
Pressing backward I noticed that my just selected ext3 partition had
magically changed back to XFS.

So overall: When trying to change my XFS partition to a regular ext3 it
refuses to after having prior selected an XFS file type.

[Bug 69009] Session management does not work and does not agree with ubuntu documentation

2006-10-29 Thread Vincenzo Ciancia
Public bug reported:

Session management in ubuntu seems to be meant as different from other
linux distributions and windows, but, in the current state, in dapper
and in edgy which I am using now, it's not different, it's just broken.
Let me explain a little more: I don't see a sane way, for an user, to
automatically make gaim, skype and such applications be run at startup.

For an experienced user, that can deduce the command name from the
window he sees (even if usually the command is named after the program),
going to system-administration-session is of no help, since editing
startup programs does not lead to desired results. I delete a line, it
looks like it deleted the line, but next time I log in again, I find the
line there. I can disable the command, of course, but the app is
broken.

The same happens if I add a new line, it usually does not stay where I
added it. There is also no way to just save my current session now, I
see this is an ubuntu modification (w.r.t upstream), but if I open the
session properties and click on the help button, in the docs it says
literally:

f you do not select this option, when you
end your session the Logout Confirmation dialog displays
a Save current setup option.

Ok, so where's my save current setup option?

Summarizing:

1. There is no easy way to make programs, expecially those in the system
tray, stay there after logout, and IMHO this must be fixed, it's a grave
usability bug, since applets stay on the panel instead, thus users get
confused

2. the session properties program allows to edit startup programs, but
the editor is broken, does not explain what's really happening,
pretending to delete programs that will be there on the next login

3. It's not clear how session management is /meant/ to work in ubuntu,
so it's not clear if these things are bugs that must be fixed, or
features, in this case the bug is in usability, since the interface does
not make clear how the system must be used.

4. The docs are wrong about the save current setup option. A note
should be added to the docs, stating the difference between ubuntu and
other distros for this options, and the reason, or users will not
understand why it works that way (me first :))

If there's anything I can do to help don't hesitate to ask me.

[Bug 69031] drag and drop iso doesn't burn

2006-10-29 Thread Adam Barbary
Public bug reported:

When inserting a blank CD, the dialogue box appears, and asks; Do you
want to Ignore, Burn Data or Music. I click data then data CD box
appears. Dragging an ISO into the box and clicking write to CD, nautilus
asks if the iso is to be written as a file, or as an image. Clicking the
from image button does nothing.

Same error on two different machines running Edgy. One AMD 1800 with
Dual Layer DVDR/CDR burner, other Centrino Laptop with DVD/CDR drive.

Right clicking an iso and saying burn to disk works fine.

[Bug 69033] nautilus-cd-burner does not recognise blank cd.

2006-10-29 Thread Michael Barker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus-cd-burner

Nautilus recognizes my cd writer, after copying the files to the CD/DVD
creator location (burn:///) and clicking the Write to Disc I get the
standard CD Burning prompt. When I click the Write button I am
prompted with the message:

Insert a rewritable or blank disc
Please put a disc, with at least 2.8 MiB free, into the drive. The following
disc types are supported:

I found the problem. When upgrading to Dapper, a new user called
haldaemon was created. However it was not part of the cdrom group, and so
couldn't access /dev/cdrom. I solved the problem by typing the command:

adduser haldaemon cdrom

Now it works fine. I still think it's an upgrade bug. The haldaemon user
should have been added automatically.

[Bug 52396] Re: Could not get/set settings from/on resource.

2006-10-29 Thread Andrew Banks
I have this same error (Could not get/set settings from/on resource).
System sounds play, but CDs and sample video and audio files do not.

I use Dapper and have gstreamer-0.10-alsa.

Maybe I need to change the setting for the sound card. The Device
Manager says I have an Aureal Semiconductor Vortex 2, but I really
have a Yamaha 724. But I do not know how to change the driver in Ubuntu.

Reassigning to alsa-lib and ubuntu-audio team, maybe they have an idea
on it.

Well? It's been more than two months. Have those teams any thoughts?

[Bug 68897] Re: Doesn't play sound

2006-10-29 Thread LCID Fire
It might be present in edgy when you install from scratch - but I
upgraded from dapper and it was NOT installed. I had to do this
manually. Therefor IMHO this is a configuration problem - I'd call it a
bug...

you probably installed libesd0 instead of libesd-alsa0 previously, which
you are free to do, that doesn't mean it's a distribution bug

[Bug 66477] Re: hal (through guidance-power-manager) considers laptop lid always closed

2006-10-29 Thread Piotr Keplicz
Looks like the kernel *always* reports the lid as closed
(/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state). It also happens on an ASUS M6R with
vanilla kernels 2.6.16.28 and 2.6.18.1.

However, when closing or opening the lid, two different button/lid LID
events are reported by acpid.
