[Bug 156555] Re: libgnomeui-common_2.20.1-0ubuntu1 won't install

2007-10-27 Thread Suger
Well, fwiw, here is how I solved the problem

The version I had installed was libgnomeui_common_2.20.0_0ubuntu1. For
some reason, the removal script was trying to do a gconf-schema
/usr/share/gconf/schemas/libgnomeui-apport-gtk.schema. The problem is
that libgnomeui-apport-gtk.schemas has been removed since
libgnomeui-2.19.1-0ubuntu1.

So I downloaded libgnomeui-2.19.0-0ubuntu1, cp'ed libgnomeui-apport-gtk
and all went well. Not very clean, but I didn't find any better way

I still think that having the removal script of
libgnomeui_common_2.20.0_0ubuntu1 looking for a file which didn't exist
anymore since a previous version looks like a bug, but who am I to tell
?

[Bug 38946] Re: Totem-gstreamer: Aspect ratio not correctly detected

2007-10-27 Thread Eythian
I've just found that gv does the same thing when showing a PDF. So I don't
think it's specifically totem's fault. I'm running with one screen above the
other, and xdpyinfo says:
screen #0:
  dimensions:1280x1568 pixels (625x231 millimeters)
  resolution:52x172 dots per inch

whereas a regular screen says something more like:
screen #0:
  dimensions:1024x768 pixels (347x260 millimeters)
  resolution:75x75 dots per inch

Curiously, xrandr -q gives different measurements in mm:
Screen 0: minimum 1280 x 800, current 1280 x 1568, maximum 2560 x 1568
default connected 1280x1568+0+0 0mm x 0mm
I don't know if this means anything though.

I can't find a quick way of changing the DPI of the monitor (is this
even possible on a running X session?), but it seems to that if I could,
the problem would go away.

[Bug 157622] gdm hangs after login in gutsy

2007-10-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

On a fresh Gutsy install after 1 restart, gdm hangs after a completed
(successful) login. The login will be performed, the login screen will
disappear and the brownish gradient default desktop will show up. The login
sound will be played, but no panels, desktop, or anything else will be loaded.
It is possible to open a console terminal on all virtual terminals 1 - 6.
This problem does not show itself until the system has been up once normally
and then restarted.
The problem shows itself even after purging xserver-xorg, gdm, and related
packages, and even with another fresh install.
It also shows up regardless of whether compiz is enabled or the nvidia
restricted drivers are in use. I have also tried installing the nvidia binary
driver directly from the nvidia website, but this did not help anything.
The only thing that has seemed to work so far is dpkg-reconfigure'ing
xserver-xorg, which allowed it to be opened once before going back to the
problem. I used mostly defaults in the installation (only setting my
resolutions and refresh rate). This does not work a second time around. The
first time (when it did allow it to work once more), I was greeted with a
messagebox notifying me that keyboard settings between gnome and xserver were
inconsistent (pc105 vs. pc104, respectively), and asking if I would like to
keep gnome settings. I chose to keep gnome settings over Xorg's settings. I
have a slight thought that it may be the dialog woke it up from its slumber,
and the reason it (reconfiguring) did not help further times was because gnome
had already decided to keep its own settings and didn't prompt again.
Restarting into a recovery console and manually starting GDM (/etc/init.d/gdm
start) works perfectly, including with compiz and binary nvidia drivers both
from apt and the nvidia website.
Going to a console while GDM is frozen and attempting to run sudo results in
the terminal freezing with no way of killing the command (including CTRL-C or
killing it from another terminal). Running su and entering the root password (I
have set it manually) works, however, and I can simply kill off the other
terminal by killing the shell. Possibly gnome has frozen the authentication
server? (I do not know much about this or how it works).
dmesg and the X log contain nothing of note (no difference between a working
and non-working session).
Also, I've removed the fast user switching gnome plugin, which makes no
difference (the panel plugin, at least).
Final note: Running uptime/top in one of the consoles while gnome is hung
reveals a constantly growing load (up from around 1.7 initial, to up to about
12 when checked once. It does not jump or spike, it simply gradually goes up
and settles).

It seems to be possibly related to a bug posted in a comment under bug #113067
by Rob Hughes
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/113067

Let me know if I need to clarify / add anything.

General Specs:
AMD Athlon X2 3800+ (@2.5GHz, but stable)
1GB RAM
A939 Motherboard (nForce4 chipset)
GeForce 6600PX video

On one machine the toolbar is visible all the time (in slideshow). I've

Thanks you for reporting bugs. The issue you describe doesn't look to be
the same as this one: please open a new bug report, or find another that
describes your problem. In your case, gnome-panel is likely to have
crashed, so the bug is against gnome-panel package, not compiz.

Note that if you're not able to reproduce this crash, reporting it may
be pointless, since you won't be able to give more information about it.

[Bug 152815] Re: Gnome Panel doesn't remember hide setting

2007-10-27 Thread Burhan Khalid
This problem is not restricted to Avant Window Navigator
(http://launchpad.net/awn). I have my top panel set so that it doesn't
autofill, and I have hidden my bottom panel.

The problem is a bit difficult to explain, so I have taken a series of
screenshots illustrating the issue.

1. http://www.meidomus.com/images/gnome-panel/1.png

This is what I see when I initially login, you can see the current
settings in the properties window. The panel should be on the top, but
for some reason it thinks this location is the top of the screen.

2. http://www.meidomus.com/images/gnome-panel/2.png

Here I have set the orientation to 'Right'.

3. http://www.meidomus.com/images/gnome-panel/3.png

After setting it to 'Right', I have set it to 'Bottom'. If you compare
this screenshot with the first one, you will see that the panel has
moved down, even though it is set to 'Bottom'. If I repeat steps 2 and
3, the panel keeps shifting down.

4. http://www.meidomus.com/images/gnome-panel/4.png

From screenshot 3, I have set orientation to 'Top' (no effect), but
after clicking 'Expand' I get what you see there.

5. http://www.meidomus.com/images/gnome-panel/5.png

Finally, after unchecking 'Expand' I am back to my initial settings
before I logged out.

As a side effect of this, if *any* item in the panel is unlocked, all
items in the panel will be moved around (even the locked ones -- like
the notification area). To solve this, you have to explicitly set all
items on the panel to be 'locked'.

[Bug 44728] Re: Gaim doesn't include SILC support

2007-10-27 Thread agent 8131
I want to agree that splitting is a bad idea compared to just building
in SILC support as is done in Debian now. I also want to note that the
only thing required to fix this bug is to add the libsilc dev package to
the build-deps and libsilc to the package dependencies. That's all
that's been needed for at least the last couple of releases (edgy,
feisty, gutsy). It's such a simple solution and would make the lives of
all of us using silc so much easier that I would really like to see it
happen before the next release. I'd also like to note that the pidgin
and finch packages (in gutsy) both claim to have silc support when, in
fact, they do not.

Also, if anyone comes across this thread wanting to enable silc support
in pidgin or finch in gutsy here's how to do it:

[Bug 109590] Re: Evolution fails to add certain birthdays to calendar

Using the Gutsy 64-bit version, the birthdays show up in calendar now.
But it tells me this person mentioned above, born in 1947, is turning
37. She'll be happy to hear it no doubt, but I'm afraid it isn't quite
true... And trying things out a bit, it seems that the max age of all

[Bug 157678] Blank pages when printing on 6x4 paper

2007-10-27 Thread Tony Arnold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

I get a blank piece of paper when printing on 6x4 paper to a Canon
IP5000 printer using the Gutenprint simplified driver. I only seem to
get a blank piece of paper if I actually have 6x4 card loaded into the
printer. If I load A4 printer and select 6x4 paper size in gThumb it
prints correctly. Printing to 6x4 card from other applications such
f-spot and GIMP works correctly.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 with gThumb 2.10.6

Re: [Bug 151255] Re: evolution calendar pop up blank appointment

2007-10-27 Thread Tien Nguyen
Sebastien,

I think I have a new clue about this behavior. This morning, one of my
reminder pop up with a blank title again and I noticed that it does not
have a time zone specified. I also remember that these are the
appointments I imported from my old Outlook folder. (by the way, I had
to import it to Thunderbird and then to Evolution because I found no way
to import Outlook directly from Evolution; at least at the time I did
this).

Here I found another buggy behavior: if the time zone filed is blank and
I try to click the Time Zone button (next to it) then Evolution crash
with Segmentation Fault.

So I think:
#1 If the time zone is missing, Evolution should file it in with the
default time zone.
#2 There should not be segmentation fault crash; after all this is not
Outlook :).

Thanks,
Tien,

I am another Failed to initialize HAL Gutsy user. My computer is a
Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. 1G RAM, 80G HD. I had no problems in

install Fiesty.

Things are pretty sluggish.

System Administration Network Settings experience. Dialog is greyed
out for about 90 seconds. Then populates. Was able to set-up ethernet
and wireless connections, but had to use manual settings. Navigating in
this dialog takes plenty of patience. Often over a minute between
actions.

System Preferences Hardware Information Unpopulated dialog opens for about
5 seconds then closes.
System Preferences Power Management No dialog ever opens.

[Bug 157693] rhytmbox library will not load all of my files, stops at about 8000 tracks

2007-10-27 Thread David Naafs
Public bug reported:

I have about 10,000 music tracks. However, Rhythmbox will only load
about 8,000 of them into the library. It seems to keep searching, but
never finds more. I'm relatively sure it has nothing to do with the file

noticed that other media-players with a library, such as Banshee behave
about the same. The number of files loaded varies, but up to now I

[Bug 134343] Re: [Gutsy] GDM logout hangs if Power Manager is disabled

2007-10-27 Thread hob4bit
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 123078 ***

I have a solution for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) Gnome quit hanging with or without
gnome-power-manager. The gnome-power-manager_2.20.0-0ubuntu6_amd64.deb
packaged which is installed as default is broken.

To fix just install the gnome-power-manager from Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty) and two
required
dependencies. Ubuntu is good as it makes a release every six months I can
always roll
back to old version of packages. I have use similar workarounds in Ubuntu by
rolling
back selected packages.

wget http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gnome-power-manager/\
gnome-power-manager_2.18.2-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb

wget http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libw/libwnck/\
libwnck18_2.18.0-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

wget http://uk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libw/libwnck/\
libwnck-common_2.18.0-0ubuntu1_all.deb

dpkg -i gnome-power-manager_2.18.2-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb \
libwnck18_2.18.0-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb libwnck-common_2.18.0-0ubuntu1_all.deb

This is the last show stopper which prevented me from re-labelling my Ubuntu
7.10
partition as stable rather than testing.

[Bug 157708] terminal gets wrong DISPLAY with dual head xorg

2007-10-27 Thread Sami Nybacka
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Ubuntu Gutsy, gnome-terminal version: 2.18.2-0ubuntu1

I have dual screen (non xinerama) xorg setup (i810), so there is two
separate displays, :0.0 and :0.1.

When I open new terminal from
1) Applications Accessories Terminal or
2) launcher from panel (type: Application, command: gnome-terminal) or
3) laucher from desktop (type: Application in Terminal, command: zsh)
DISPLAY is sometimes wrong: terminal opened on :0.0 gets DISPLAY=:0.1 and vice
versa.

Usually when this starts to happen, it is hard to get it right again.
Usually I have to close all terminals in both displays before terminal
again gets right DISPLAY. When this starts to happen seems quite random,
but is really annoying in dual screen x, where you can't move windows
from one screen to another.

Maybe this bug is somehow related to gnome-panel bug, where Workspace
Switcher gets attached to wrong display: Bug #110899.

safe so I thought I better rename it first).

A this point a search folder called home with a sub-folders thomas and
.evolution,mail and vfolder
I didn't want to delete these (just in case :-) so I exited evolution and
deleted the .cmeta files manually.

I tried again, same behaviour.

I'm guessing it didn't escape the /, nor pre-pend the path of the file
to be created and somehow tried to turn anything it could find into a
search-folder.

might be related to bug #140949 ?

[Bug 109376] Re: Width of the vertical preview pane isn't remembered

2007-10-27 Thread Milton Pividori
I have this problem in Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 with Evolution 2.12.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Evolution.
2. Activate Vertical View (View - Preview - Vertical view).
3. Change messages-list column width.
4. Close Evolution.
5. Start it again.
6. Messages-list width is not remembered.

If I modify the width to a value lower than 410 (more or less), it's
remembered, but not if it's higher.

[Bug 157762] Yelp crashes for external documents, bookmarks

[Bug 157786] Mass Storage Device is not detected

as a mass storage device. Actually gthumb (I think it is gthumb, I am
not sure, it automatically starts when I plug in the camera) tries to

[Bug 157622] Re: gdm hangs after login in gutsy

2007-10-27 Thread CJ Corsi
I left it on tonight at the brownish screen gdm stops at for about 12 hours,
and still nothing happened. I'm guessing this rules out it being related to bug
#61711, which I originally expected not to be the problem anyways.
As a side note, when I start gdm from the recovery console, it pops up with a
messagebox saying that the HAL cannot be initialized!. Is it possible that
this is the reason it works in the recovery console, that it pops up a
messagebox again?

[Bug 157622] Re: gdm hangs after login in gutsy

2007-10-27 Thread CJ Corsi
Sorry, I meant to reference bug #128803 above. I've also tried killing gnome
panels as it recommends, but this does nothing.
Another side note is that no process is using CPU time, so I can only think
that the high CPU load is some sort of artificial inflation from IO?

[Bug 157797] evince crashes while trying to print

2007-10-27 Thread Berthold Bollinger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When i try to print certain pdf files, evince will crash and terminate itself.
Other pdf files can be printed. I use a HP Laserjet 1018 with the foo2zjs
driver, which works well. I can print the questionable pdf files using e.g.
KPDF.
Moreover, when trying to view one of these pdf documents with evince started
from firefox, evince would freeze.

[Bug 157778] Re: [gutsy] Crashing with Deskbar has unexpectedly quit

2007-10-27 Thread Khristian Alexander Schönrock
I get the same error, via:
1- gnome-panel freezes
2- kill gnome-panel with -9
3- gnome-panel restarts, and deskbar-applet crashes.

Sometimes the deskbar-applet crashes on its own, asking the same question, if
it should be reloaded. I removed it from the panel, and it stopped crashing.
Sad, it was the only good enough replacement for Katapult in Gnome.
