[Bug 150193] Re: Remote Login via XDMCP is not working in Ubuntu Gusty/7.10

2007-11-09 Thread robsyd
I'm testing
Server with Feisty (I haven't enought courage to update it)
Clients with Gutsy
The servers are settled with remote greeter to 'plain with facebrowser'.
The clients have 'DisallowTCP=false' in the gdm.conf.

from the console 'X :1 -query hostname_of_gutsy_machine_running_gdm'
gives only a dead X screen (with the X cursor in the middle).

[Bug 161157] totem plugin crashes mozilla fisuon

2007-11-09 Thread Dilomo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When i watch a movie in a site with totem and press X to exit the
application while the movie is still running a big flaw occures. A
randomly coloured window with no contents is being drawn on top of all
the others (in the place of the movie window I was watching) and
prevents me from working. I have to restart the xserver to get the
problem fixed. That is causing me a lot of trouble.

[Bug 161156] Report crashes automatically

2007-11-09 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

I don't know if this is applicable to most or all Gnome applications,
but several times applications (Rhythmbox, Open Arena, kdesvn) have
crashed without any feedback. It would probably help debugging if a bug
report were created automatically, and a dialog popped up to inform the
user of the crash and asking whether to file the bug report in
Launchpad.

Re: [Bug 150193] Re: Remote Login via XDMCP is not working in Ubuntu Gusty/7.10

2007-11-09 Thread Green_Star
By the way, I have two machines installed with Gusyt, one is upgraded from
old version and another one is a fresh install.

When I go to 'Login Window' different machines has different gui. I guess
the one upgraded is carrying the old screen from old version. As explained
before I am not able to login from one machine to other using XDMCP. Using
XDMCP i cant even login into that local machine too.

'X :1 -query hostname_of_gutsy_machine_running_gdm'

When I use above command i get following error

bash: X:1: command not found

I guess I need to install to work that command.

I guess your command maybe wrong. It should exactly 'X :1 -query
hostname_of_gutsy_machine_running_gdm'.
After the X command there is a blank space!

I can confirmed that this solution works for me too on two Gutsy
installation from the commandline.

[Bug 150471] Re: [Gutsy] high processor activity after logging out and then logging in again

2007-11-09 Thread Michael Trunner
Hi,

don't think uninstalling tracker is the solution. We removed tracker
from our workstations on the university and even added the killall
nautilus to PostSession. But the problem still exist. Okay it is better
now but the problem here isn't the warm cpu, it is the traffic on the
nfs-server, and the full home directory (user can't login when his home
is full). Currently we can't really upgrade to gutsy, because of this
bug. So i think the Importance should be higher.

[Bug 35065] Re: icon very small on the desktop

2007-11-09 Thread Andreas Nilsson
This is a hicolor issue. When putting a icon on the desktop, Nautilus asks the
icon theme (hicolor) what size it wants and Hicolor tells it it wants a
scalable with a 128x128 canvas. Banshee provides a scalable with a 48x48 canvas
though, so Nautilus gets all confused.
This can be fixed by providing a pixmap in /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps

[Bug 161185] crashed when open video.

2007-11-09 Thread SneeR
Public bug reported:

totem-xine.
 totem /media/sda2/prison.break.s03e06.rus.eng.hd-ac3.novafilm.tv.avi
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
 (Details: serial 92 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
 (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 161212] links in email that contain 'amp;' don't work

2007-11-09 Thread Reece
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 149964 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/149964

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Symptom: I received an email that contained a link. The link URL uses
ampersands to separate URL parameters, and those ampersands were entity
encoded with 'amp;'. The link in the email did not work. I happened to
also receive a forwarded version of email in which the URL had been
entity-decoded (presumably by the intermediary's MUA). That URL worked
fine. The only difference between the URLs was entity encoding.

I believe that links are supposed to be entity encoded. However, I'm
unsure whether decoding is evo's responsibility or that of the browser
that receives the link (Firefox 2.0.0.8 in my case). If the former, then
it seems that evo doesn't correctly handle links that contain amp; .

http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/, sec C.12. says:
Unfortunately, many HTML user agents have silently ignored incorrect usage of
the ampersand character in HTML documents - treating ampersands that do not
look like entity references as literal ampersands.

[Bug 161211] Whole PC hangs with blank screen and no ping response

2007-11-09 Thread Matty
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I'm running Fiesty Fawn 7.0.4 on an Intel Dual Core Duo (64bit) with 2GB
RAM. Occasionally (about every 2 or 3 days) the whole PC locks up. I get
nothing on the monitor, no response from the num-lock key and I can't
ssh or ping it's IP address. I have to hit the reset button to bring it
back from the dead.

It only ever happens when I'm not sitting using the console. So I assume
it's the screen saver (currently set to random). I'll now be changing to
a single screen saver to see if the problem goes away.

I can see a similar issue (bug #107504) was raised on the 18th of April.
Any idea if the issue has been investigated?

Also, Is there anyway I can tell which screen saver was last used when
it crashed?

Thanks in advance.
Matt.

[Bug 150471] Re: [Gutsy] high processor activity after logging out and then logging in again

2007-11-09 Thread James N
Even though I don't think this bug qualifies as high- or severe-
importance, it is a problem with a major OS component, and the
PostSession workaround seems to have undesirable side effects for some
people. Just imagine if Microsoft left a bug in their Windows Explorer
that caused the CPU to run around in circles non-stop.

...alright, maybe that isn't such a good analogy. But this problem
really needs to be fixed.

[Bug 130643] Re: gthumb doesn't rename two or more files

2007-11-09 Thread DaveR
The string of ?? is generated as soon as % is typed.

I am not able to follow the temporary workaround. No matter how I edit
the template I always get the ? as part of the name and the
are appended. I don't seem to be able to remove the
template completely either. Yes, I'm sudo'ing. Any advice gratefully

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to

[Bug 161246] gnome should give feedback when localhost is down

2007-11-09 Thread Kasper Souren
Public bug reported:

I slightly messed up my /etc/network/interfaces, but never realized that
that was the reason that gnome was not starting. KDE, XFCE4 and icewm
were working fine. If localhost has to be up for gnome, it should at
least give back feedback to the user that it is down. Right now it just
stops, showing an empty screen with a cursor, leaving the user unaware
of what the problem is.

I found the bug by doing strace gnome-terminal from konsole.

2007-11-09 Thread Green_Star
Yes, same thing happened to me. Disconnect doesn't work? So I tried to go to
my original terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F5 something like that. I tried
several F* keys to go to my original desktop because I do not know where my
desktop is running. After couple of tries I went to my screen and found that
command was killed with some errors (I thought of killing it by pressing
Ctrl+D but it was killed already).

i use Citrix Presentation Server Clients für UNIX Version 10.6
Copyright 1996-2007 Citrix Systems, Inc., loaded from

http://www.citrix.com/English/SS/downloads/details.asp?dID=2755downloadID=3323pID=186

Citrix uses the full screen, so the panel isn't visible. To resolve this
issue maybe citrix must not be allowed to cover the panel, but that's my
opinion.

Thanks for the quick answer.

Best Regards
Ronald

 Hi there
Thanks for taking the time to report this issue, could you please provide the
name and version of the citrix client you're using, and the specific steps
 to trigger this behaviour.
does this happens inside the citrix client or in your workspace, where you
use this client, is the focus inside the client or your external workspace?.

 Thanks in advance.

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are affected by bad X.org DPI detection

2007-11-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
The remaining cases I've seen of this have been down to the user having
an old xorg.conf from either Feisty or an old tribe release. In at
least one case, removing the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines in Monitor
and rebooting completely resolved it.

Or just run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and it'll regenerate
your xorg.conf. For most people you can just accept the defaults for
any prompts it gives.

Having a similar problem here. After entering full-screen mode, the
viewer starts flickering after a few seconds. It flickers for between a
fraction of a second up to a couple seconds, and then works normally for
a few seconds before repeating. This only started today, after using it
for weeks.

[Bug 161752] [gutsy][regression] new glib causes segfault in many packages

2007-11-09 Thread NoWhereMan
Public bug reported:

I've filed this bug as GLib's but I think it's mainly related to MANY
packages that link to GLib

As far as I understood GLib changed behavior in memory management, the
result is that many applications/packages now segfault/crash/freeze if
the environment variable

G_SLICE=always-malloc

is not set; applications such as vlc (segfault on start), the gimp
(freeze on file new and many plugins) , pgadmin3, xchat-gnome and many
many others, just search Launchpad; I'm filing this new bug so that it's
clear that all these issues refer to the same problem.

G_SLICE is a known workaround; I'd propose to assert this variable as a
default in some global-wise config file until at least the other
packages are fixed, in fact, as far as I understood this apps are faulty
(not the lib) and not using as they should GLib, btw the result is still
that most of the gnome desktop is completely broken.

Anyway feel free to close this bug if you think it's redundant

killing the gnome panel was not restarting correctly, only after closing some
windows, it is working ok, so it seems that there is a problem of distributting

[Bug 160032] Re: Unable to type in dictionary

2007-11-09 Thread brammeleman
Same problem here with the address book lookup applet.

For both the dictionary lookup and the address book applet with
(System-Preferences-Appearance) Visual Effects = normal:
- open gedit (or any other app that accepts text input)
- hover over the text input box (mouse pointer changes to 'text input pointer')
- click the input box
- type some text

expected result:
- typed text appears in the input box of the applet

actual result:
- gedit remains focussed
- typed text appears in gedit document

When switching over to Visual Effects = None, it works as expected.

2007-11-09 Thread Massimo Forti
Thanks for you suggestion. I search a lot in the web and I found the
same. But I think it is only a small piece to block temporarily the
problem. VLC is a big problem, most people use it, and some of them are
in the situation to set the G_SLICE=always-malloc in /etc/environments,
is not so easy to do it for a new user. We must work toghether to find a
easy and stable solution. Thanks

[Bug 161763] gvm doesn't work for remote sessions

2007-11-09 Thread Henning Moll
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Start a local Xserver, set/export DISPLAY and connect to a remote (gutsy)
system via 'ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]'.
Start 'gnome-session' on the remote system.
Now plug a USB-Drive on the remote system. It won't get automounted. The reason
is, that gnome-volume-manager is not running.

This is because of some code in manager.c (function gvm_local_user) which does
a check whether the user is local or not. Are there reasons for that
restriction?
A 'sudo touch /var/run/console/username:7' before 'gnome-session' is a
workaround for that problem.

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2007-11-09 Thread davidc
I got confused by this. Totem-gstreamer properties in synaptic clearly
states (wrongly?) amongst its many features : DVD (with menus). Please
assume ubuntu users are idiots. Ok, please assume I am:-)

I insert my dvd movie (not commercial or encrypted) in drive. All
codecs, etc installed ok, just in case. Hit the button. Few seconds
later an error message: pops up. Which makes me sad:(

Please, for your next upgrade, state clearly and simply that I require
totem-xine before I can watch a dvd. If I knew what I was doing I would
still be a Debian user. I have now installed totem-xine, along with some
other players and (sometimes after a little playing around) am now able
to play just about every video and audio format I have found.

Thanks everyone, I know you do your best:-)

[Bug 150193] Re: Remote Login via XDMCP is not working in Ubuntu Gusty/7.10

2007-11-09 Thread Papamatti
@Benítez Esquivel:
In my case Xnest :1 -query 127.0.0.1 wasn't work locally on my machine,
restarting gdm has changed nothing.
Then I do the (so i believe) most importend step, i use the command sudo
gdmflexiserver --command=UPDATE_CONFIG and restart gdm via sudo
/etc/init.d/gdm restart from the textconsole. After that, Xnest works ! But
unfortunately it works only on my own machine locally.
Now I've tried DisallowTCP=false, because it was set true before - thanks to
Benìtez Esquivel - after updating and restarting gdm i could see the
gdm-login-screen from my xming-windowsxp client - BUT after logging in nothing
happens - no desktop appears, only an empty brown window.
Thinking on my problems with XFCE and XDMCP on my old Feisty-Server i'd
remember, that there was problems with the ESD-Enlightenment Sound Deamon, wich
can transport Audio from the server to the client, but Cygwin/xming doesn't
support this. On Windows there is no ESD at default. So I turn all
Audiosettings to ALSA instead automatic.
Then i do the update-command and restarts gdm like obove - and voila - i can
login and work with xming !

Very strange, so i think - something went totally wrong with this gdm-
thing...why this doesn't work automatically? In my oppinion this is a
bug in the init.d-script: it does not update the settings for gdm before
gdm (re)starts.

Hope this helps someone :-)

[Bug 123080] Re: [gutsy] booting after hibernation doesn't prompt for a password

2007-11-09 Thread forest
It's still broken for me.

If I hibernate using the power manager applet in the notification tray

resume. If I hibernate using the usual Quit / Log Out menu, the
password prompt is bypassed when I resume.

Xfce desktop.
Upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy.
gnome-screensaver 2.20.0-0ubuntu4.2
gnome-power-manager 2.20.0-0ubuntu6
/apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/hibernate: true
