[Bug 162370] should install mime magic for tiff

2007-11-13 Thread James Troup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Please have evince install mime magic for TIFF files so that evince
shows up as one of the possible applications to use in e.g. firefox's
download/view dialog box. Right now, the only option is EoG and that
doesn't support mutli-page TIFFs making it useless for Efaxes.

[Bug 146399] Re: gnome-terminal crashed with signal 7

2007-11-13 Thread Alberto Scotti
Peter,
I had this problem too since last update.
If you need a terminal you could also install "konsole" (the kde console tool):
it works for me (yet you have to install kde deps packages which may not be a
viable option for you, if the machine you're using is a server and/or you want
to keep it "clean")

[Bug 26198] Re: Nautilus Thumbnail creation freeze system

2007-11-13 Thread pamindic
I have a related problem with a folder containing 240 sub-folders and
2800 tiff files of around 50MB each. Opening the folder is slowish,
about 10 seconds. I was able to open the subfolders until I started
using one of the tiff files for an icon. I did that with 3 of the 240
sub-folders, and then Nautilus started crashing each time I tried to
enter a sub-folder.

[Bug 26338] Re: Changing users randomly affects other users and group memberships

2007-11-13 Thread Martin Pitt
** Summary changed:

- Adding a user to a group modifies other users' groups and passwords
+ Changing users randomly affects other users and group memberships

** Description changed:

- Nothing to do with 3270 but couldnt post with real problem package which is
- pmount..?
+ Impact:
+ gnome-system-tools does not keep its internal model of users and groups
consistent with the real world in /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, and /etc/group.
This leads to errors like deleting a different user than the one you chose in
the UI, dropping unrelated users from groups like admin (thus making the system
inaccessible for administration), and similar effects.

- Overall description: My TAT CODISK 2.0 and MP3 player SigmaTel MSCN Music
Player
- and and CDs I put in my cd drive will not automount. This problem is
repeatable
- and mostly consistant. Having searced forums and this site it is similar to
bug
- #23770. This problem emerged after adding a new desktop user to the system and
- changing the primary user password and has only occured on one of the two
Ubuntu
- systems I have.
- Having worked through bug #23770 I have tried all the suggestions and am able
to
- mount USB drives with the command pmount -d /dev/sda1.
- Attached is the terminal output from this command and from the id command.
+ Fix:
+ Update the internal world model with each operation, done in
http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-system-tools?view=revision&revision=4017.
This needs some serious backporting for Feisty and earlier, I suppose; it
should apply well to Gutsy.

- Steps to reproduce: This problem is reproducable with both kernel versions I
- run: 2.6.12-9-686 and my main kerenel 2.6.12-10-686
+ Regression potential: The bug could not be fixed fully, there might be
+ more places which need update calls. Potentially the patch could mess up
+ the pam db even more.

- Actual results: Drives will not auto mount and appear on the desktop. Connot
be
- opened via computer menu, delivering error message:
+ TEST CASE:
+ 1. launch users-admin
+ 2. create a test1 user
+ 3. create a test2 user (with admin rights)

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-11-13 Thread sweetsinse
i too have a somewhat slow bootup time; nothing to the severity of many
minutes, but still, a significant increase when compared to feisty.

i am running a IBM T43 laptop, and also gutsy is installed on a DELL
INSPIRON B130. same problem with both.

one thing i do notice after looking @ ps output and also xsession-
errors, is that my first error occurs JUST after gnome-panel loads for
the first time (excluding a setuid error thru gtk+ that seems to arise
from dbus?). on my laptop specifically (T43)---right after i log in---
the top and bottom gnome-panels load very quickly (no BG image yet),
just like feisty. however, before they are populated with any icons,
the screen/mouse flickers and the panels disappear. this is when i
experience about 10-20 seconds of heavy disk i/o time as others have
described.

the interesting part about all that is the fact that nautilus is the
very first thing that is loaded after the panels. others have claimed
no problems when using xcfe or kde, so this (nautilus) seems to be
contributing somehow? also, i have since read about similar issues
regarding nautilus and gutsy specifically that did not exist in feisty.

until then.

[Bug 160311] Re: Window Resize Difficult (Window Border Thickness)

2007-11-13 Thread Neil Broadley
I'll second this - I can't find any way to make the windows resize
border bigger than (I think) 1px. Resizing windows is cumbersome,
frustrating and far too easy to get wrong. I'm running compiz-fusion
enabled from a stock Gutsy build, with almost no additions (ccsm is the
only change I've made so far) and the resize handles are all but
invisible. I've tried all the stock themes in systems/prefs/appearance,
but none of those appear to change the resize handles.

In Emerald, when using my older Beryl/Emerald combo (on Feisty), this
was a simple change to make the handles bulkier and easier to grab.

And yep - of course I can also use the menu and choose the resize
option, but obviously this is NOT a solution to the handles being to
small. It's a workaround, which is even more cumbersome (but admittedly
less frustrating) than hunting for the resize handles in the first
place. I can also use ALT-BothMouseButtons to initiate a resize. But
that's not useful if my keyboard isn't available/handy (which it often
isn't when I'm using the PC in the living room).

I have the same problem.

I am using Ubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon" with a 'Microsoft IntelliMouse
Explorer' mouse.

The navigation buttons on the left of the mouse, for forward/back does not work.
They're mapped wrong.

The back-button does paste the text in clipboard.
The forward-button does right-click.

[Bug 162404] evolution can't handle launchpad gpg verification mail

2007-11-13 Thread Elias Humbolt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I just uploaded my GPG key to the Ubuntu key servers.

pub 1024D/3B911004 2007-06-04
  Key fingerprint = 2BD6 7217 A600 E71C 6017 BA13 50CB AF00 3B91 1004
uid Elias Humbolt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Well, now I figured out, that I have forgotten the passphrase, which by concept
means, I have no way to revoke the key.
So I created a new key for the same email and uploaded it to launchpad as well.

pub 1024D/9E475F91 2007-11-13
  Key fingerprint = 23D9 2806 03F9 FCEE F37A A8D7 DD96 0E3E 9E47 5F91
uid Elias Humbolt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

The problem now is, when I want to import the key with the fingerprint,
everything seems right so far as I get the verification email.
But as it turns out, I can't decrypt the message.

Could not parse PGP message

[Bug 26338] Re: Changing users randomly affects other users and group memberships

2007-11-13 Thread Martin Pitt
After discussion with upstream, fixing the second test case (parallel
usage of adduser) is too intrusive to fix for stable releases. It will
be fixed eventually in Gnome 2.21. So let's confine this SRU to the
first test case of only using g-s-t for user administration.

This is the proposed changelog:

gnome-system-tools (2.20.0-0ubuntu2) gutsy-proposed; urgency=low

  * Add debian/patches/23_users_update_model.patch:
- Update the internal model of users and groups with each operation, so
that it does not become inconsistent with the real world in /etc/passwd
  and /etc/group.
- This fixes random errors like "unrelated user was dropped from group
admin", "deleted a different user than the one selected in users-admin",
  etc.
- Patch backported from SVN head:
  http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-system-tools?view=revision&revision=4017
- LP: #26338

 -- Martin Pitt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Tue, 13 Nov 2007 11:26:21
+0100

Attaching the corresponding dpatch.

I verified that with this patch the test case is fixed.

** Description changed:

  Impact:
gnome-system-tools does not keep its internal model of users and groups
consistent with the real world in /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, and /etc/group.
This leads to errors like deleting a different user than the one you chose in
the UI, dropping unrelated users from groups like admin (thus making the system
inaccessible for administration), and similar effects.

  Fix:
Update the internal world model with each operation, done in
http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-system-tools?view=revision&revision=4017.
This needs some serious backporting for Feisty and earlier, I suppose; it
should apply well to Gutsy.

Regression potential: The bug could not be fixed fully, there might be
more places which need update calls. Potentially the patch could mess up
  the pam db even more.

  TEST CASE:
  1. launch users-admin
  2. create a test1 user
  3. create a test2 user (with admin rights)
  4. create a test3 user
  5. delete the test1 user
  6. delete the test3 user

This will either cause test2 to not be in group admin any more, or be
deleted in step 6 instead of user test3.
-
- Another one:
- 1. launch users-admin
- 2. create test1 user in users-admin
- 3. "sudo useradd test2" in terminal
- 4. create test3 user in users-admin
- 5. "id test2" will show that user test2 has been nuked.

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-11-13 Thread sweetsinse
ok.

nice little bootchart program, wouldve been nice if i could have done
this a little easier tho...

anyways i modified the running parameters of the bootchart program so it would
not stop running when it gdm/init.d was processed, that way we could get a look
at what all was happening on my T43 during the 15+sec freeze period. i
recorded 85 sec. of time, approximately 65 beyond the point where gdm is
initialized. like i said before, blank gnome-panels will come up after about
3-4 seconds (@36sec), then disappear almost IMMEDIATELY (notice how nautilus is
initialized RIGHT after the panels in the chart). the heavy disk i/o seems to
correlate VERY nicely with nautilus activity(until 51sec). Although the gap
also matches well with dhcdbd activity--
--i tried a little fix someone posted about automatically setting resolv.conf
to 0.0.0.0 to avoid dns issues...no change.

am i waiting on my wireless card, before loading background/panel
apps/etc. in this situation?

im trying to gather info from the chart but its somewhat cryptic to my
novice eyes but i hope it will be of some use.

here is a link in case my attachment doesnt work:

forgot to add one little thing...soo tired...

i tried disabling gnome-at-visual (in session preferences {assistive
technology/AT}) because the chart showed a strange 2 seconds of zombie
time after login... but this did not do anything. also i seem to have
misinterpreted the chart referring to nautilus...the pink areas are
where nautilus seems to be WAITING due to high disk i/o. the culprit
here seems to be some kind of change in the networking arena from feisty
to gutsy...be somewheres in nm-applet/dhcdbd/NetworkManager.

[Bug 26338] Re: Changing users randomly affects other users and group memberships

2007-11-13 Thread Martin Pitt
I tried to reproduce this bug with the dapper version without success.
Dapper has quite a different architecture, there is no sytem-tools-
backends yet, and all changes done to users-admin are written to the PAM
files atomically at program exit. Also, the code is quite different, so
that the patches do not apply at all. Restarting users-admin between
adding and removing the users also works correctly for me.

Can someone reproduce this test case on dapper with some variation?
Otherwise I will ignore dapper for this SRU.

[Bug 162218] Re: don't open another trash window if one is already open

2007-11-13 Thread Joachim Noreiko
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 36151 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36151

I don't think this bug is a duplicate of Bug #36151

Bug #36151 asks for a second click on Trash to close the window.

Here I say that a second click should either do nothing or bring the
trash window to focus.

Sebastian says on that bug:
"It acts the same way as any directory put on the panel by drag and drop. Your
behaviour would mean programming a trash application rather than opening the
nautilus view on the folder."

In which case, the bug is perhaps that clicking on ANY folder on the
panel shouldn't open a second folder view, but bring it to focus.

2007-11-13 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 151877] Re: [Gutsy] gnome panel volume control alternates mute/% volume during sliding

2007-11-13 Thread Stefan Praszalowicz
I have the same issue, only with gutsy, on multiple computers (mainly
DELLs but also an HP), all with an intel sound card (snd_hda_intel
module) ...

Trying to describe the problem in other words: Sliding the volume bar from,
say, the bottom to the top produces, instead
of a steady volume increase: volume increase, mute, volume increase, volume
decrease, mute, volume increase.

Sliding volume bars in the gnome-volume-control windows gives the same
weirdness, sometimes also unlocking the
left and right channels and setting one of them to a different random value.

If i "strace" the mixer applet process, I cannot reproduce the problem,
which somehow makes me think of a timing related race.

But sometimes I have to wait like 2-10 seconds for the visualization to start.

Also, there are only 2 visualizations (GOOM and Monoscope), Windows
Media Player have tons of them.

would prefer a different behaviour, you can consider it as a "what to do

[Bug 70380] Re: Partitions on external hd are mounted twice

2007-11-13 Thread Reffman
The same goes for all NTFS drives on all my machines. Each and every
NTFS drive is displayed twice on the desktop.

They are displayed once labeled as their mount point like so: "sda1"
And once with an additional label, like so: "145GB NTFS volume (sda1)"
(this could also be their NTFS label, if they have one)

The same also for USB drives and other NTFS-formatted media.
This goes for both Ubuntu 6.10 and 7.10.

[Bug 162427] System Monitor

2007-11-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

GNOME System Monitor has all processes in the Processes tab.

In Windows Vista, it is better, they have Applications, Processes, Services, 3
tabs. Much better organized, much easier.

Also, it say I have 2 processors, but I have only 1 processor, but its
dual-core.

[Bug 90338] Re: rythmbox bring system freez after clicking on control>visulization

2007-11-13 Thread Mystik
mine does not altogether "crash" the system, but I have choppy audio and
the visualization shows only a black screen... I use an Nvidea GeForce
5500 graphics card, I have the desktop visual effects set to none, and I
have a compatible driver enabled (though it is a generic driver, it runs
games like SecondLife perfectly fine) under my Screen and Graphics
preferences. I've installed all updates, though I'm fairly new to linux
and have perhaps failed to install something within the terminal.

[Bug 138586] Re: Gnometris controls very unresponsive when keys are held down

2007-11-13 Thread mcourneyea
I still see the bug and its very annoying.
it seems to me as if the queue holding directional instructions for each piece
doesn't empty once the piece gets to the bottom but adds its instructions to
the new piece making it uncontrollable until the queue is cleared. for some
reason this doesn't happen with only a few pieces on the screen but becomes
very noticeable with a lot of pieces on the screen - I could be wrong but
that's my take on it from a programmer point of view

[Bug 162427] Re: System Monitor

2007-11-13 Thread Fred
Separation of huge list of processes into separate tabs (such as
Applications, Processes, Services) where they are categorized to easier
understand what is what, and get a quick overlook on the system.

The representation in Vista is superior to that one of GNOME.

A real representation, 1x processor, not falsely representing a dual-
core CPU as two separate processors.

Possibly addition of uptime.
