[Bug 107504] Re: Ubuntu 6.06 screen saver freezes and entire system hangs

2007-11-23 Thread kopolov
I am having the same problem on Gutsy as well.
My screen saver is not set to "random", but to "popsqaures" (2D screen saver).
I believe the machine is entering a sleep/suspend mode and cannot return from
it (even though my power management is set to "never do anything").
I saw a similar problems with WinXP in the following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923232

Since the system completely hangs I cannot track the exact package.

I would like also to mention that the "system hangs" problem also occurred to
me in 2 other occasions:
1. I installed the "bubbles" (or "pop bubbles" or something like that, through
the "add/remove ..."). The system hangs completely, ALWAYS, after a while.
2. I installed the game "TuxKart" and the system sometimes hang (mostly not).

[Bug 164797] There needs an easy way to rename partition labels on removable media.

2007-11-23 Thread Omar Shami
Public bug reported:

There needs to be an easy way to rename disk labels on removable media
such as thumb drives and mp3 players.

Currently, they just show up as 'disk' or 'disk-#' unless I have renamed
them in another OS such as OS X.

The way OS X does it is by changing the volume name on the disk and in
the GUI, then the next time the volume is mounted, it gets the mount
point of the new name.

[Bug 164794] Gutsy nautilus cannot browse samba shares

2007-11-23 Thread tiger74
Public bug reported:

Hello all,
Oh man... I've been troubleshooting this since last night. Gutsy fully updated.
I setup a samba shares on my notebook. Testing it with smbclient command,
result is OK:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ # smbclient -L localhost
Password:
Domain=[MARS] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.26a]

Sharename Type Comment

Domain=[MARS] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.26a]

Server Comment
----
VOYAGER2 voyager2 server (Samba, Ubuntu)

WorkgroupMaster
----
MARS VOYAGER2

I can also connect to the share:
mount -t smbfs //localhost/public /mnt

But, I cannot browse the list using Nautilus. It's able to look at MARS, but
when I click it errors "Cannot display content"

So, finally, I'm testing by installing Centos using vmware, open it's
Nautilus, and voila! It connects right away to it (the shares on my Ubuntu
samba). So, I assume the flaw is with Gutsy's Nautilus?

Curiously, if I'm using the "Connect to server" menu from Nautilus, it
connects without problem. It can also then can browse the share from network.
But, when I umount the connection, some time later it will error again about
cannot display the content of ...

###

I notice that the window title of Nautilus says "Mars on Mars", shouldn't
it "Voyager2 on Mars"?

Additional info:
I'm testing using xsmbrowser, and it works perfectly. So it's got to be
Nautilus?

[Bug 132939] Re: [gutsy] Suspend does not work from GDM login screen

2007-11-23 Thread Mal Gamble
I have the same problem with 2 different desktop computers. The
following error message appears in /var/log/syslog after an unsuccessful
attempt to suspend from the gdm login screen:

"... gdm[6792]: WARNING: Request for configuration key
daemon/SuspendCommand=, but not type STRING"

The SuspendCommand setting in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf looks OK to me.

The Shutdown option on the gdm login screen works fine.

[Bug 164786] Panel crash on adding window-list to panel

2007-11-23 Thread GregCwx1
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I was making changes to gnome desktop panels yesterday and tried to add
the windows list applet to the top panel and it crahsed the gnome-panel
(seg fault)! This was terribly disappointing! The one thing that has
bugged me for awhile is that there is no easy way to save panel settings
in the event a user or GDM ends up doing something stupid (that's
probably a wish list item).

Even after a reboot, the panel crashed again immediately when logging
into my account! The panel even crashed for my 'test user' account when
I tried to log in to that! I reinstalled gnome-panel and deleted all
gnome related hidden subdirs to get back to where I started. I'm pretty
sure this is repeatable, at least on my system.

Ubuntu 7.10 (clean install) on System 76 Darter 2 Ultra laptop (2GB RAM,
Intel Celeron, Intel 965 graphics), basic gnome desktop without compiz
bells and whistles b/c of 965 graphics issues.

[Bug 164766] Re: text conversion

2007-11-23 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include
enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Simple,

See this URL: http://ittraining.lse.ac.uk/Documentation/OnlineGuides

that might explain more what I am trying to say.

Thanks for looking.

Try to kill the tracker daemon with "killall trackerd" in console and
recheck if the freezes still happens afterwards. If not just disable it
under System - Preferences - Settings .

[Bug 164392] Re: Freeze on applications for a few seconds

2007-11-23 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Thanks for the information.

1GB is plenty. The login screen is loaded early, so the system keeps
starting processes in the background when you log in. I don't know how
Fedora does things, but it's still not a bug in X so I'm closing this
one.

So if I follow you, my system keeps starting processes 2 or 3 hours
long, dozen of people have the same problem. And you just close... Ok,
fine. (because those freeze repeat for at least 2 or 3 hours after I
start the system). All that make the system unusable.

I am also having this issue. Attached is a backtrace with debug symbols
from libgtk. Beyond that, I can trace the problem... It looks like the
crash may be cause be the current default printer being unavailable.
I.e., I printed at home, then went to work, then evince started
crashing; maybe it's trying to connect to my home printer?

[Bug 146946] Re: [gutsy] Gnome settings daemon does randomly not work

2007-11-23 Thread Florin Andrei
Clean install of Gutsy 7.10 on a ThinkPad T60 with ATI card. Using the realtime
kernel (Ubuntu Studio).
At some point I installed Compiz, then removed it, but I don't know if it's
related.

Anyway, maybe 1 out of 5 logins, I get this error message:

There was an error starting the Gnome Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.
The last error message was:
Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-IKulmccHNE: Connection refused
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

The theme looks bad, the fonts are too big, some applets are missing.
If I logout, then log back in, it's usually fixed.
Also see attached screenshot of the error message.

[Bug 164684] Re: tali computer players cheat

2007-11-23 Thread YrlInpMbPiwZDMZN
ok, so here's a more sophisticated bug report for those who missed
informations in the first one..

how to reproduce the problem efficiently: locate function
   int RollDie(void)
in file
   gtali/yahtzee.c
modify it to return '1' instead of random numbers 1..6 (aka both player and
computer will roll nothing but '1's)
int RollDie (void) {
   // return ((rand () % 6) + 1);
   return 1;
}

Compile/run and see the results. For the screenshot in the attachment I
played 5 rounds (of course rolling '1's only..). The computer players
cheated (as described in my original posting) and scored 5 times 50
points (=250) for '5 of a kind [50]' each - disrespecting the rules:

"You can only use each combination once[..]" (from:
gtali/help/C/gtali.xml aka 'help')

As described in my original posting this also happens in 'real play'
when the computer players roll '5 of a kind' more than once in a game.

By the way: The player cannot re-use the same combination/cheat
(conforming to the rules), only the computer players do.

Have fun hunting down the bug.

[Bug 164712] Rotate and Save Causes Crash

2007-11-23 Thread chrisolof
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

Open a JPEG (from Olympus Digital Camera in this case) in eog, rotate
the JPEG, hit CTRL+S or File->Save to save it, see the save process
happen, and crash - eog is still up on the screen, but no longer
functions (buttons, menus, nothing works). Just have to close it at
that point.

It does successfully save the newly-rotated image correctly before it
crashes.

[Bug 66869] Re: Double click on "Floppy Drive" in Computer location jumps to / directory

2007-11-23 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Reporting bug is a good way to contribute, arguing on the settings is
not really useful though, it rather makes developer speed time reading
those comments and discussing something which is already confirmed being
a bug while they could fix issues. Nobody argue this is not a bug or
would not be really nice to get fixed, but we have some thousand desktop
bugs and only a small number of people working on those between package
updates and bug triage so we can't work on everything. I've no working
floppy drive on my desktops and laptop so it's not easy for me to look
at the issue but I would be happy to help somebody who wants to look at
the issue. I'm marking the bug has a low priority bug milestoned for
hardy and listing it on the sponsorship list so people who look to
contribute know that's something they can work on to start
