I have a similar problem, but a different outcome. The first time I press the "Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc" icon, my PC freezes for a good 2 or 3 minutes - long enough to make me walk away from the machine and come back later. But then the window has opened to give me the options. I lock screen. Come back later and carry on working. Subsequent presses of the "Switch User, Logout, Shutdown etc" icon seem ok. Ubuntu 7.10 - Nvidia GeForce 6600GT using Nvidia Graphics - note: I had the same problem on the supplied graphics driver and I have tried both 64bit and 32bit distros. The pc is an AMD 64bit 3.8GHz Athlon. Thoughts? Or is my issue covered elsewhere? if it is, apologies, but this was the closest I could find... When I release the mouse button, the movie does not resume playing from that time point but instead the time cursor jumps back to a point early in the timeline, the video still at that point displays, but playing does not resume. I repeated the drag, but same thing happens. The message box below the controls says that it is playing. The control shows || pause, not the play button. It looks like it should be playing, but no progress is made. If I press pause and then play, still no video playing, just a still image. After repeated trying of back and forth seeks, pause/play, and then returning the time cursor to the start, the video sometimes resumes. After the above testing was done, I closed Totem. I clicked on the DVD-VR icon on desktop. Instead of re-loading Totem and playing the video as it did when the DVD-VR disk was first inserted, the contents of the disk were displayed as files in folders. Right click on the DVD-VR icon brought up a menu, but there is no "play" entry, but there is "open" and "browse folder", both of which do the same thing -- they launch the file browser (Nautilus) and display the contents. The default behavior when a user launches the DVD-VR icon with the mouse should be to play it if the disk is a playable format, which DVD-VR is. [Bug 178166] [Hardy Alpha-2 i386: Totem-xine] Totem-xine installed the normal way using Synaptic but it won't launch -- libxine.so.1 is missing.

I have the same issue when using a brand new 8GB iPod. If I disable the iPod plugin in Rhythmbox then the issue goes away. Plugging in the device with this plugin enabled also crashes any open Rhythmbox windows. I can confirm this. Hovering the cursor over the MP3 files that I have each time increases the number of FDs by 4. The FDs are not freed later on, causing the handles to reach 1024. Once the maximum number is hit, the icons of everything in the nautilus window gets replaced by the generic "missing icon".
