I'm unable to install the gnome-panel-dbgsym package:

shakti:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-panel-dbgsym

Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
  gnome-panel-dbgsym: Depends: gnome-panel (= 1:2.20.0.1-0ubuntu6) but
1:2.20.1-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Version of gnome-panel is 1:2.20.0.1-0ubuntu6

Can you fix the dbgsym package and re-open, I'll get the stack trace?
There is definitely a problem...

[Bug 176543] Blank screen on switching text to graphics mode

2008-01-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu: 7.10 (gutsy)
kernel version: 2.6.22-14-generic
platform: 64bit
graphic card: GeForce 7600 GS

steps 2 proceed:
- log in in graphics mode
- switch with e.g. ALT+F1 to text mode
- switch with ALT+F7 back to graphics mode

You'll see a blank white screen. It's only possible 2 guess where the
elements are by orientating on quick help when moving the mouse over an
element. If you reach the Standby- Button in the top-right corner you
can log off, you'll see the different options. Than you can say log off,
return to the Login form and get a normal graphical desktop.

[Bug 62430] Re: rhythmbox doesn't do anything with .pls given on the command line

2008-01-04 Thread ddumanis
I can confirm this bug. It is a ridiculous bug, given that

(a) Rhythmbox is the default Gnome music manager/player, and
(b) That is has specific options for Internet Radio, i.e., it superficially
appears to be .pls capable.

Like other posters, I can play a .pls by pasting in the URL (an
inconvenient and unsatisfactory method)--but not via specifying a
mimetype in Firefox nor by specifying "rhythmbox" in the preferences of
Streamtuner.

[Bug 177745] Login Window Preferences: custom welcome message does not take effect.

2008-01-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Gibbon, default install, all packages up-to-date at the time
of this writing.
Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook, specific hardware specifications available on
request but are probably irrelevant.

To reproduce:
On the panel which is by default on the top of the desktop,
open the system menu,
under "Administration", select "Login Window".
Under the "Local" tab, select a custom welcome message, exit.
Reboot the system.

Behavior:
Upon loading, gdm will continue to display the default message, "Welcome".
Other configuration changes to the login window take effect as normal.

To worksaround:
Edit the gdm.conf-custom file:
In GNOME, open a terminal and type "sudo gedit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom".
On a new line under the line reading "DefaultWelcome=false", type: "Welcome="
immediately followed by the desired welcome message.
Do not surround the welcome message string in quotation marks.

Etiology:
The Login Window Preferences applet correctly specifies that a custom welcome
message is to be used ("DefaultWelcome=false"), but does not write a "Welcome="
value to /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-config, causing gdm to continue to use the default.

Other notes:
The Login Window Preferences applet also does not recognize a custom welcome
message manually added to /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom as described in the
workaround.

2008-01-04 Thread Aine Pedersen
Hmm! Is obtaining a back trace something a mere user can do? I do have
an administrative password and am willing to give it a try, but I am in
Slovenia and my son in England, which leaves me working on my own. Will
the link you have provided guide me through the process? I have to
admit to being a little fearful..

[Bug 178802] getting text when logging out

2008-01-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When I log out (log off user etc), I get a regular black screen with
various messages for a few seconds, then it goes to GDM login screen.
Ever since Ubuntu stopped showing all the startup text stuff and went to
a splash screen, I think it's not necessary to show any of that anymore,
so it would be nice to see that gone, too

[Bug 151536] Re: Hangs on login and uses 100% cpu

2008-01-04 Thread hggdh
Thanks, mvo and Elias, for the bug report (and, of course, we are sorry
it took us that long to get to it).

Unfortunately, the backtrace is incomplete -- there is a suggestion we
are looping trying to acquire a lock, but no real data on who is doing
that. Could you please repeat it with debug symbols for (at least)
libglib and e-d-s?

Question: was e-d-s already running on login (in other words, did you
log out Gnome and log in again)? Does it happen when you log out, or
only during login? Is Evo itself auto-started on login?

[Bug 180017] Re: Feisty dies on login manager after screen goes to sleep

2008-01-04 Thread joegiampaoli
No, my wrong. Today it did it again, the night before yesterday and
yesterday with what I had done was ok, but this morning it did it again.
Had to Hard Reboot.

Still here are the steps I did. Maybe they lower the chances somehow:

System>Administration>Login Window
Select Local Tab
Select Style "Plain"
Uncheck Background Image

Then:
System>Administration>Services
Uncheck acpid and apmd

Reboot

I noticed yesterday with testing that after this if I do close my
session, screen does go to sleep, but if I only lock my screen from my
account (so other user could switch to their account), the screen never
goes to sleep.

[Bug 180412] file system usage should ignore capifs

2008-01-04 Thread Oliver Gerlich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

On systems where the "capifs" file system is activated (for ISDN cards),
gnome-system-monitor attempts to show the free space of this file system
(which apparently is always 0, and it doesn't convey any useful
information anyway). Instead, this file system should not be displayed
at all, similar to the other "pseudo file systems" like /proc.

I suppose the file system is activated by loading the capifs kernel
module.

This was seen on current Gutsy.

[Bug 179149] Re: Hibernate doesn't work on laptop with Hardy

2008-01-04 Thread SebastianHazlewood
I will try the shortcut to get into a console window. no way of
telnet/sshing into the "box" though.

however, i have managed to try again and wait. at some point it did
switch off, and i managed to switch on and return from hibernate. very
very messy and slow, I will try again after running another update of
Hardy today, and report back.

Seeing as there are numerous topics about suspend/hibernate issues in
the forums, I would assume that there's generally still lots of things
wrong with acpi/powermanagement mechanisms in ubuntu, which I think
should've been fixed 2 or 3 releases ago ;-) else nobody having those
problems will seriously abandon his/her windoze partition (including
me).

Intermittent bugs can be hard to figure out. The minute I get the
behavior again I will get a screenshot. For now, I'm stuck with it working.

Sincerely, Xeno

I just found that some wine processes were still running - killing them
did restore sound and video.

[Bug 180397] evince characters printing with epson stylus dx6000

2008-01-04 Thread stambec92
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Distro: Ubuntu 7.10 i386
Kernel: default
Printer: Epson Stylus DX6000

While I open with Evince a pdf file, I can see all the fonts good, but
when I say to print there are many fonts that aren't good, like letters
changed with others and so on. Why?

Example of pdf file, http://www.thyresia.com/Public/data/NIWarge/20071220234414_Funstuff_codici.pdf";>Codes_UrbanTerror
