[Bug 203201] Re: inbox capitalization error

2008-04-20 Thread Alexander Bürger
Upstream, a slightly different fix has been applied for the same problem (plus
a fix for a memory leak, see http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=514300).
I am not sure if the upstream is compatible with this one.

[Bug 219810] [NEW] Hardy freezes when listening to radio with Rhythmbox

2008-04-20 Thread Fabrizio Testa
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

[Bug 117011] Re: Gnome-mount will only mount encrypted partitions and not drives created with cryptsetup/luks

2008-04-20 Thread Alexander Krivács Schrøder
I can confirm this bug on my system as well. I have the whole disk
encrypted instead of a partition (say /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sdb1) and
although the password box shows up, nothing happens when I enter it. If
I attempt accessing the disk again, I'm once again asked for the
password. The only way around this problem is to manually cryptsetup and
mount the disk.

[Bug 219836] [NEW] can no longer set volume label of hal drive through nautilus

2008-04-20 Thread xtknight
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Steps to reproduce:

Go to Places->Computer
Right click a drive and try to Rename it. It does not work in Hardy. This
used to work in Gutsy (at least, that's what I've been told by another user).

Error ---> Sorry, couldn't rename "44.6 GB Media" to "Backup": Operation
not supported by backend

I think this was broken in the move from the gio to gvfs backend.

The only way to set a hal volume label is as follows:
sudo hal-set-property --udi $(hal-find-by-property --key block.device --string
/dev/sda1) --key volume.label --string DriveLabel

Where /dev/sda1 is the block device and DriveLabel is the drive label.

I am not sure if it also needs to be in this file to be permanent:
/etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi

I also think that when renaming a drive such as "44.6 GB Media", it
should select the whole thing and not just the 44 as if .6 GB Media were
some sort of extension.

[Bug 219810] Re: Hardy freezes when listening to radio with Rhythmbox

2008-04-20 Thread Fabrizio Testa
After having run some extra tests, I think I can say that the issue is
not caused by Rhythmbox as such, but most likely either by my USB
wireless adapter (Digicom USB Wave 54 - zd1211rw) or by the USB 2.0 PCI
card (D-Link DU-520 with NEC chipset) to which the wireless device is
connected.

I even downloaded/installed the latest zd1211 firmware from
sourceforge.net but with no success..

In fact, if I connect the PC with the onboard ethernet adapter (Intel
Ethernet Pro 100) everything seems to work fine (I haven't experienced
any lockups during the last hour or so).

Has anyone reported problems with zd1211rw or with an add-on USB 2.0 PCI
card?

P.S.: I forgot to mention that I use Wicd 1.4.2

[Bug 216953] Re: Feature request: Gphoto2 plugin in gvfs-0.2.3u1 missing

2008-04-20 Thread martinp
First it does not say "you do not understand" but "perhaps i didnt explain
myself clearly", ok? Esp. If you do not know with whom you are writing.
Second if you had read my postings you should have understood that I'm quite
well are what "locks" are. I never claimed gphoto "freezes".
And it's not a "sense" of exclusive access but actually IS exclusive otherwise
it's using semaphores which is quite common for i/o. Oh well it might be ok to
not allow other applications to write. To be honest - no professional does
this. When editing the raws or maybe jpegs you usually create a copy of this
locally and never touch the original. In even more usual case is copying all
files from the cam to the local disk. However I experienced such a phenomenon
with gtkam. My cam went to standby after some seconds while not using it and
gtkam was not able to reacquire access. I had to do a rescan and click thru the
media-tree. Afterwards my pictures have been logically doubled (in the view,
not the flash-media). And you tell me the lock issue confuses people? What
about having gtkam not being able to access the cam anymore (just do a replug)
and/or seeing a multiple of your pictures where some of them are not eben
accessible.
There functionality that does not really work has been rolled out while you
make a mountain of a molehill. And if it's not a "bug" as you say, why don't
you insist, what you did in the first post: "RTFM". If it's obviously not a bug,
then it's a feature and features are usually documented. Lol, we have software
with bugs in hardy but not software that may confuse people. This is really
awful. This is what will make ubuntu fuck up against fedora in the long
term...creepy, really creepy.

[Bug 214076] Re: .pdf fails to open: Unhandled MIME type: "application/x-ole-storage"

2008-04-20 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Evince doesn't rely on extension to determine file type.

Briefly, what evince does (correct me if I'm wrong):
1. Try to determine file type based on uri with a call to
"g_file_info_get_content_type" function. This function uses infos returned by
GIO to determine mime type.
2. If it fails then try to determine mime type with a data sample,
3. Then call the backends manager with this mime type to process the file,
4. If the backends manager fails to open the document then print message
"Unhandled MIME type : ..."

Hence, even if this process could probably be enhanced, I don't think
this is a bug in the way evince determines file type.

But sure, there is a usability issue and messages should be more user
friendly. Evince should print a human readable description of the
content type. For instance opening a non existent file returns the
following message "Unable to open document. Unknown MIME type" instead
of simply "File doesn't exist"

I will mark this as "Invalid" tomorrow as I am confident this is not an
issue in the way evince determines file type and open a new one for this
usability issue.

If you think this is unsatisfactory, please let me know and we can
discuss what to do next.

Regards,

JB.

[Bug 216953] Re: Feature request: Gphoto2 plugin in gvfs-0.2.3u1 missing

2008-04-20 Thread Sebastien Bacher
ubuntu doesn't use gtkam by default but you should report the bugs you
are having upstream or in launchpad. the locking issue is not a writte
one, just mount the camera using gvfs and try to download photos using
the gthumb import then, that will return an error about the device being
busy and not work as expected. the do not understand statement was
refering to the previous comment without implication on whether that was
due to the comment not being clear or not and was not against you. not
sure what you are arguing about there and how the distribution comment
is revelant, the gvfs gphoto backend will be used in ubuntu next cycle,
we just don't think it has been tested enough and has the suffisant
quality to be distributed in a lts version yet, anyway enough comments
about the issue, that's what has been decided for ubuntu and you are
free to use an another distribution if you think the ubuntu choices are
wrong

[Bug 219848] [NEW] rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-04-20 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

The title says it all really - I play from local files - mp3 and ogg -
in my /home/user/Music directory created by a default install of Hardy
Heron using free space at the end of my hard drive - dual booting with
winxp.

I run evolution, firefox and rhythmbox and sit here surfing, or go and
do household chores etc - shortly after an hour all sound stops as
rhythmbox freezes. I quit rhythmbox, via right-click on taskbar button
for rhythmbox and close, and then say yes to quit program not
responding. After that all sound apps, such as movie players cannot play
sound, tho the movie is showing fine. A reboot gets my sound back. The
install is standard, with the addition of the following apps (they were
installed AFTER that freezing - Amarok was installed specifically to see
if it too would do the same): amarok, K3b, dvdrip, quanta and all
required deps and apps for these programs. The codecs to play mp3 were
chosen by Totem before I started Rhythmbox just after the fresh install.

Amarok has been playing for 3 and a half hours thus far - one or 2
momentary skips in play, but no freeze and system more responsive than
with amarok (as in when minimise and maximise apps)

What I would expect to happen - continual playback for several years if
need be !

System here: Ubuntu 8.04 with all updates as of 2 hours ago - 768 megs
ram on a Intel Pentium 4 2.66 Ghz

thanks for the work thus far

[Bug 217984] Re: Totem exits fullscreen mode when playing from Samba share

2008-04-20 Thread Michael Lueck
Greetings Steve-

I have been all around on thus bug. First I thought it was a Totem bug,
next Nautilus but found that if I mount the Samba share the crash is the
same. Usually I mount Samba shares instead of using the GUI.

Following is I think the answer to your "mount the samba share as a
kernel mount..."

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/ldslnx01/data/AppData/Estonia$ cat tallinn.mpeg >
/dev/null
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/mnt/ldslnx01/data/AppData/Estonia$

Nothing bad happens. And nothing bad happens playing the movie file with
Totem as long as you do not fullscreen it.

Sometimes the first time I play a/the movie from the Samba share, it
will not play straight through. I have to close Totem, open the file
again, then it plays fine. Maybe a cache issue?

Also hinting at caching... I deleted both log files for this Hardy
workstation on the server... log.ip and log.hostname. I played the movie
file again, fullscreen, crash. No log what so ever was generated for the
client. I find that very odd. Does a Linux client really cache THAT
well?

Speed of LAN is switched 100MBps, so 100MBps Full Duplex.

Yes, consistent crash every time when I fullscreen the movie. Sometimes
when I enlarge the player window, but the consistent problem is
fullscreen'ing.

My Samba PDC is running Debian Sarge, and updated packages from
samba.org which are 3.0.26a-1. Pretty much running stock Sarge other
than I snagged a newer kernel a long time ago from "testing"... so this
package is the kernel package on the server: linux-
image-2.6.12-1-k7_2.6.12-10_i386.deb. I updated the kernel to get a
solid version of xfs, as our standard filesystem is xfs.

Uptime is... 07:01:16 up 306 days, 23:15, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.01,
0.00
So I would rather not bounce the server! ;-)

Sure they do.

Why aren't your security systems working for Hardy Heron?

Only 1184 errors to go.

If I don't get some sort of rational answers from you, I will start
satirizing you on the web.

Oooh you have (YEA) million dollars and all I have is BRAINS.
Where are your source releases? (GPL)

You've mutilated BASH so badly that it is almost impossible to do
anything (of any signifigance) without sticking sudo infront of it.

my email address: ( I have to look it up )

I apparently can't attach my logs and their diffs.

PS. I have no intention of starting the same thing with BUGZILLA.

I don't want to redistribute this systems' code .

PPS: you should have a spelling checker that doesn't use me to fix the
errors!

Please send a copy of this to Florian Thomas

You really could use a general error page for those that don't want to
report their errors one at a time.

If you think the errors in your help system
( starting with the name of the help program is not help it is yelp.)
should be so easily dismissed (it crashes whenever you have more than one
window open and close one of them. )

I will just keep appending the unanswered messages until I get some
action.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on

[Bug 16815] Re: Metacity catching mod4 but not gnome

2008-04-20 Thread eremos
I still have this issue on gnome-control-center 1:2.22.1-0ubuntu4 on
Hardy.

mod4+d = show desktop
mod4+e = home folder
mod4+l = lock screen

show desktop works, but the other two do nothing.

If I have something selected in an application (ie. text in gedit), it's
apparent that the application briefly loses focus when the shortcut key
is pressed, but nothing else happens.

[Bug 219842] Re: firefox start page not showing in cs_CZ locale

2008-04-20 Thread Kamil Páral
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

+ In Ubuntu 8.04 RC the default Firefox start page does not show
translated page in the Czech language (cs_CZ locale), even though we

If you look into /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/locales-ubuntu, there is

problem may come from the fact, that there is no index-cs.html file, but

I have also noticed that firefox after startup opens not the /usr/share

[Bug 219842] Good Bye Thanks to your triage morons.

If you think the errors in your help system

should be so easily dismissed (it crashes whenever you have more than one
window open and close one of them. )

I will just keep appending the unanswered messages until I get some

Thanks a lot.

[Bug 218434] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon crashed with SIGSEGV

2008-04-20 Thread Steve Anelay
I can confirm this bug. Just installed Hardy on SDHC card of Asus eee
pc. Have to launch virtual terminal to get to desktop.
/var/log/messages shows:

[ 685.989640] gnome-keyring-d[10185]: segfault at 0014 eip 080759c7 esp
bfa29ab0 error 6

[ 712.699273] gnome-keyring-d[10371]: segfault at 0014 eip 080759c7 esp
b7a06dc0 error 6

Reinstalling gnome-keyring packages and gdm makes no difference. I've
also tried changing the gdmgreeter to the old gdmlogin in gdm.conf, but
again no difference. Same thing when reinstalling Hardy. At the first
launch I can login through gdm, but after getting to the desktop I get a
message about gnome-keyring crashing. After that no more logins are
possible.

[Bug 219878] [NEW] Nautilus rapidly eats memory when video thumbnails are active

2008-04-20 Thread azathothgr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When nautilus is set to generate thumbnails and enters into a directory
with multiple video files, it will start rapidly eating memory even if
the thumbnails are all generated and shown (no running gnome-video-
thumbnailer process). It will release some and start increasing again
periodically, until at some point it uses it all and crashes. The system
can become sluggish after a very short while, and unresponsive as memory
consumption increases.

I'm using ubuntu 8.04 updated to latest,
nautilus version 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu4

I'm not sure how to go about getting a backtrace. Following instructions
from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace I got the attached output.

[Bug 102426] Re: Garbled sound in totem-xine when playing Linear PCM audio (often used in camera's videos)

2008-04-20 Thread Mantas Kriaučiūnas
This bug exists in all Ubuntu versions I've tested (7.04-8.04) and it's a
really important issue for totem-xine users as sound is broken in videos,
produced by the majority of photo cameras :(
Btw, it seems this bug already has duplicates - see bug #102991. You can grab
video/audio files for testing from that bug, Debian bugreport or bug #93076
(all these files have Linear PCM audio).

[Bug 213693] Re: firefox won't start up due to symbol lookup error in libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0

2008-04-20 Thread TotoKid
What I keep calling "bug" is in libgtk v2.12.9. I downgraded the hardy
packages (libgtk2-dev, libgtk2.0-0, libgtk2-common) to the gutsy ones,
which are v 2.12.0 and, apparently, the problem was solved (I could run
Swiftweasel, at least). I still could not hear KDE notifications, and
there was a problem in gobject, too. As I removed all the libg* libs in
/usr/local/lib, I could immediately hear sounds and the gobject problem
was vanished. I upgraded my packages again, and now everything works
prefectly.

Thank you.

Thank you, This is the first useful advice I have had.

It will take ME a few days (believe it or not) to respond to any
comments on this (thread?).

I am a human but this system is a text based AI and anything that it
can't handle
gets sent to me.

It is rather ironic that someone with 30 years experience in writing
can't use IRC

I can't take the time out to learn another $(language).

[Bug 195434] Re: Hardy alpha5: Shutting down GDM takes a long time.

2008-04-20 Thread pableu
I've had the same problem on my box. As a temporary fix, I changed "--
retry 30" to "--retry 2" in /etc/init.d/gdm, now there's only a almost
unnoticeable pause of two seconds during shutdown.

It still says "gdm[]: WARNING: main daemon: Got SIGABRT. Something
went very wrong. Going down!" in syslog, so it probably isn't the
perfect solution.

[Bug 77541] Re: After hibernation ekiga says registration failed.

2008-04-20 Thread Jamin W. Collins
I too can confirm this. Running fully updated Gutsy with current Ekiga
v2.0.11. It would be nice if there were some menu option to re-attempt
registration or perhaps a configurable number of retries with delays
between them.

I don't know that I agree with the priority assigned to this bug. Ekiga
would be quite useful on laptops, but this bug is a rather large
annoyance to using it in such environments. Personally, I have it
configured to register with my home Asterisk system to receive
notification of potentially important calls while I'm out. However, as
it currently stands it's nearly useless to keep it running when moving
between locations.

Please consider raising the priority of this bug and addressing the
timeout/retry issue.

[Bug 219878] Re: Nautilus rapidly eats memory when video thumbnails are active

2008-04-20 Thread azathothgr
Upon further inspection this seems to be caused by nautilus trying to
regenerate the thumbnail each time, and
only happens when zoom is set to higher than 100% (150% in my case), so it must
be related to : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/204434

The weird thing is there's no gnome-video-thumbnailer process running like when
a thumb is generated for the first time.
The process, whatever it actually is, takes a very long time and a lot of
memory for each file, compared to when zoom is at 100%.

[Bug 129383] Re: Slow CD ripping (Sound Juicer)

2008-04-20 Thread Christopher Parker
I'm not sure if this is related, but I've had the same issues on my
machine. I'm using a Gateway Solo 5300 with 512 MB of RAM (the maximum
it supports). At one point in time, when this laptop was brand new from
the factory, it had Windows ME on it. I used this laptop to rip CDs all
the time during that time period. It had only 256 MB of RAM at the time.
A CD would take something like five minutes from start to finish,
regardless of which ripping program I'd use (Windows Media Player,
Winamp, et al).

Now, a CD rip takes between a half hour and an hour. It happened with
Sound Juicer under Ubuntu Gutsy, and it's happening with KAudioCreator
under Kubuntu Hardy. With KAudioCreator, the ripping and encoding
processes are performed separately, so I can see when it's ripping vs.
when it's encoding. The ripping process for one 10-minute-long track is
somewhere around five minutes. Encoding is just as long.

I've seen a bunch of people on the Internets suggest that it's a DMA
issue. Below is the output of the command hdparm -i /dev/scd0. Based on
how everything's responding, it seems like there are bottlenecks on both
the hardware end of things and the encoding end.

/dev/scd0:

Thanks for your bug report. Could you try to get a valgrind log for the
crash (you can follow the instructions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind)?

[Bug 219924] [NEW] Hardy network places cannot display certain Windows shares

2008-04-20 Thread Paul Pieroni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Ubuntu 8.04 beta 20/04/08. Nautilus 2.22.2. Stand-alone Ubuntu machine
amidst an W2K ADS. To reproduce - Open 'Network' from 'Places' menu.
Navigate through 'Windows Network' - 'DomainController' - We are
prompted for user/password at this point so all ok so far. List of
shares on the machine is shown but some cannot be accessed. Whn you try
to open them the error message is 'The folder contents could not be
displayed' and 'Invalid Argument'. This appears to happen if folder has
a large number of sub-directories and files. I tried with KDE4 and
Dolphin gives a 'Folder does not exist' error when one tries to open any
of the problem folders.

[Bug 206921] Re: MacBook brightness adjustment does not work in Hardy

2008-04-20 Thread Steffen Röcker
Ok, we know that pommed works. addon-macbook-backlight in hal doesn't work.
Thats strange, because pommed code and hal code are basically the same for
adjusting the Macbook brightness.
The introduction of PolicyKit/ConsoleKit broke that part of code in hal.

I've run hal with more debug information (see attached patch) and got:
[E] addon-macbook-backlight.c:145: failed to mmap: errno:
'Success'

** ERROR **: failed to gain access to the video card
aborting...

I have no idea why this mmap fails.

To those who have a second or higher generation Macbook:
Do you run x86_64? Maybe this just doesn't work on 32bit.
