[Bug 184711] Re: network-admin error: The interface does not exist

2008-07-08 Thread Filofel
I see the same here.

I would add that system > administration > network works.
The only thing that doesn't work (at least here) is gnome-nettool, either
command line or as in
system > administration > network tools > {Select interface} > {Configure
button>}
It then yelds the infamous "The interface does not exist".

As a side note, I think there is something strange in the interface handling
logic when one changes the NIC, anyway. This might or might not be related to
the bug we're talking about, but the contents of /etc/network/interfaces
after a NIC change doesn't seem to be what it should be, and it takes a few
reboots (with the machine coming up with no interface at all) and manual fixing
of the /etc/network/interfaces fix before things get back to normal, and
stable. When the machine comes up with no interface at all, I see that
something has removed all but the loopback device from /etc/network/interfaces.
I'm trying to understand what goes on there.
Might also be related to what udev does: I've noticed that if I manually load
my enet driver at early boot (i.e. while still in initramfs), it appears as
eth0. While when the machine is done booting, i.e. after the root partition has
been mounted, it appears as eth1.
What I'm seeing when performing a NIC replacement might also happen when using
two alternative ways to access the network, like a wired connection and a WiFi
one used alternatively.

[Bug 246777] Re: no sound on playback, sound on BBC video clips :-(

2008-07-08 Thread mcas
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively" [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 223216] Re: evolution crashes when backup

2008-07-08 Thread DrC
After a couple of Evolution-related Ubuntu updates (Hardy) this problem
is still here.

The process outlined above is not totally clear to me. I ask Evolution
to restart after the backup - should I run the process before I backup,
when I get the option dialogue, when the crash report is showing or
afterwards?

Or should I untick the restart box and go through the procedure after
the backup or when I restart?

Incidentally, looking now (after using Help-Report a Problem then coming
to Help-Submit Bug Report) my /var/crash is empty...

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-07-08 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Also experiencing this bug on:
Linux khaeru-desktop 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
...with no useful information beyond what has already been posted.

As Glyph Lefkowitz says, someone kernel-savvy needs to try and reproduce
this and see what's going on. I am the 14th person to echo brad's
original report, so it seems reasonable to mark this as "confirmed" in
linux, but not in Totem per Christian Landtag's comment about audacity,
wine, etc.

This may be wrong, but I'm unsure of how to get developer
acknowledgement or attention otherwise. The behaviour is evidently not
chimerical and the posters here (or at least I) are clearly beyond our
depth in terms of figuring out precisely what is happening. Pedro
Villavicencio, is the information already provided not sufficient to
diagnose or fix the bug? If not, what else can we do to provide it?
Kjell, since you seem to know more than most commenters about the kernel
packages, can you suggest someone to provide guidance in reporting? Your
feedback on ours is appreciated.

[Bug 244093] Re: Checking security repository in Updates adds deb line to Third-Party Software

2008-07-08 Thread Savvas Radević
Well... I have a hunch that it has something to do with python-apt package
specifically the newest BaseURI vs. BaseURI-architecture implementation

I changed the file /usr/share/python-apt/templates/Ubuntu.info and
modified the following section as listed below:

Suite: hardy-security
ParentSuite: hardy
RepositoryType: deb
BaseURI-amd64: http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
MatchURI-amd64: archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu|security.ubuntu.com
BaseURI-powerpc: http://ports.ubuntu.com/
MatchURI-powerpc: ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
Description: Important security updates

Basically, I changed BaseURI to BaseURI-amd64 (my Ubuntu architecture), now it
works.
Looks like BaseURI-arch is working better than BaseURI :)

[Bug 246726] [NEW] [Feature Request] Address book should support variable number of entries

2008-07-08 Thread tyler
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I had some problems recently with the contact mask of evolution.

A friend has phone numbers in 3 countries, 2 numbers each. Here is where
the problem occured.

I had to create 2 contacts for him, as it was not possible to add this
amount of phone numbers.

The contact mask should features something like OGMRip
(http://ogmrip.sourceforge.net/en/shots/ogmrip-main.png) has for
subtitles, which allowes adding the appropriate number of entries
without cluttering the interface.

I played a little bit with glade and changed the corresponding menu to
show, what I mean by example.

[Bug 246607] Re: VFAT "Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?"

2008-07-08 Thread A. Walton
We currently do not support trashing on volumes that do not manage
permissions properly, such as NTFS or FAT, out of privacy concerns for
users. We are working on a fix for this by modifying the Trashing
specification to be more clear on these situations. The conversation
starts here :
but spans out across the next few months.

The likely event will be that you will have to "manually" create a Trash
directory on these volumes, and you'll be warned that anything that goes
into the trash can be viewed by any users on the system. But this change
hasn't been committed yet, and is still considered under discussion.

Did you try to run 'network-admin' directly as a non-root user without any
options?

* If I run as root with 'gksudo network-admin', the window comes up grayed
out; I can't unlock it; and there's an error reported in the CLI: "Unable
to lookup session information for process" (IMO, the GtkComboBox error is
irrelevant).

* If I run 'network-admin -c eth0', it goes straight to a message box saying
"The interface does not exist...", but there's no "Unable to lookup session
information..." error in the CLI.

* If I run " gksudo 'network-admin -c eth0' ", I get both errors, and the
message box window for "The interface does not exist" is using the GTK theme
of the root user, which is very different from my user theme on purpose to
know when a window is running as root.

* When I click the 'configure' button in gnome-nettool, I get the same two
errors on the CLI, and the error message is also a root window. I think
gnome-nettool is simply calling 'sudo network-admin -c INTERFACE', which no
longer seems to work -- doubly.

* If I run just 'network-admin', the window loads normally; I'm able to
unlock it, select an interface and configure it.

[Bug 246718] [NEW] Using gnome-display-properties causes X DPI setting to change

2008-07-08 Thread Vincent Lönngren
Public bug reported:

After gnome-display-properties has been invoked by a user and
~/.gnome2/monitors.xml created, X dpi will always be set to 96 when the
user logs in to gnome. This is especially annoying since it's not
obvious necessarily obvious to the user why it happens, and some people
like me will tend to spend considerable time looking throught X and GDM
configuration before finding the cause of the problem. Removing
~/.gnome2/monitors.xml works, but I suppose that is not an ideal
solution for everyone.

I looked in System->Help and Support. I typed 'DVD' in the search

one. (I tried the totem manual, but it was useless.) Under this heading,
I selected "Playing DVD's." The second bit of advice they give helps you
enable the totem player to read the DVD. It looks like the problem is

[Bug 246701] [NEW] Change Scroll Region and display glitch

2008-07-08 Thread Micah Cowan
Public bug reported:

Please describe the problem:
After sending CSR so that the final line in the terminal is excluded from the
scroll region, glitches can occur when interspersing writes to the bottom line
with scrolls of the upper region.

Steps to reproduce:
I will attach a script (scr-fix-min) that produces the problem for me.

NOTE: This script expects LINES and COLUMNS to be exported and refer to the
number of
lines and columns in your terminal. These must be accurate or the bug won't be
shown. If they are unset, you will get a ton of errors, rather than the
simulation. If one is running bash, then

  $ export COLUMNS LINES
  $ ./scr-fix-min

will probably work. Otherwise, COLUMNS and LINES may need to be set
explicitly before running the script.

Actual results:
What I currently see: one or both of "foo" and "bar" are missing. Or, on at
least one system, the bar will be black/empty when it ought to be
reversed/have-text.

Actually, when I _should_ see "foo" and "bar", but don't, I will sometimes
actually see an effect such that it looks like the top one or two pixel-rows of
the bottom line update and switch back, but not the rest of the line. So a
masking problem or incorrect information about what portions of the display to
update seem likely.

Expected results:
What you ought to see: the bottom bar flash between "x", "foo", "x", and "bar".

Does this happen every time?
This reproduces reliably for me on gnome-terminal. xfce4-terminal sometimes
shows both "foo" and "bar" as it ought to, and sometimes doesn't (same app,
same instance, different runs of script).

Other information:
This behavior was discovered while I was using screen, which can use the final
line as a "status" line. I was playing with screen's "autoaka" feature, which
allows the current screen window's name to change based on the
currently-running command: I found that everything worked as it should until
the prompt reached the bottom, so that hitting enter caused scrolling. At that
point, the window title would stop updating.

[Bug 246699] [NEW] Window chooser displays only one window after clicking desktop

2008-07-08 Thread kbit
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This is about the "Window chooser" panel applet, displaying one button
with a popup menu of windows - not about the "Window list", the default
in the bottom panel, which shows all windows as buttons on the panel.

This window chooser displays only one window if no window, but the desktop was
the "active window" before clicking the Window chooser button.
Since this sounds too complicated, here in short steps:

Situation 1: (screenshot 1)

0) Open several windows.
1) Add the window chooser to the panel. One button appears.
2) Select any open window.
3) Click the newly added panel button.

Result: All windows are shown in the panel button's popup menu.

Situation 2: (screenshot 2)

0) Prepare like above
1) Click the desktop, so none of the open windows is focused.
2) Hit the window chooser panel button.

Expected: Same as above.
Actual result: Only the last selected window is shown in the popup window list.

(Appending one screenshot for each situation.)

[Bug 244093] Re: Checking security repository in Updates adds deb line to Third-Party Software

2008-07-08 Thread Savvas Radević
I've detected the problems:
1) the checkbox for its status (checked/unchecked) looks for
"http://archive.ubuntu.com"; instead of "http://security.ubuntu.com";
2) if again you uncheck and check the hardy-security after switching back to
"archive.ubuntu.com", it will add the hardy-security with
"http://security.ubuntu.com";, which will show as non-canonical third-party
software repository

Execute in terminal: gksu /etc/apt/sources.list

Change any occurence security.ubuntu.com to archive.ubuntu.com

For example, I changed:
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-security universe main multiverse
restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-security universe main
multiverse restricted

..to:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy-security universe main multiverse
restricted

[Bug 68616] Re: New gaim upstream version - 2.0.0beta4 available in Debian, please sync

2008-07-08 Thread Richard Laager
I'm cheating a bit by marking this Fix Released for Baltix. It's an
Ubuntu derivative, so the only way it would still have something <
2.0.0beta4 is if the project was dead. ;)

[Bug 244093] Re: Checking security repository in Updates adds deb line to Third-Party Software

2008-07-08 Thread Savvas Radević
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: software-properties-gtk

  Confirmed on:
  1) Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (development branch) 8.10
  software-properties-gtk:
Installed: 0.63ubuntu1
Candidate: 0.63ubuntu1
Version table:
   *** 0.63ubuntu1 0
  500 http://archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  2) Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.1
  software-properties-gtk:
Installed: 0.63ubuntu1
Candidate: 0.63ubuntu1
Version table:
   *** 0.63ubuntu1 0
  500 http://archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  Remarks:
  - Clicking the intrepid-security / hardy-security checkbox in the "Updates"
tab adds the intrepid-security deb line to the list of Third-Party Software
  - The above action doesn't actually show a check mark in the checkbox.
  - Unchecking/checking the checkbox in Updates tab does not have an effect on
/etc/apt/sources.list file (i.e. it doesn't remove the hardy-security line)
  - It appears to add the source just fine, it's just displayed in the
"Third-Party Software" tab instead of checking the checkbox.
+
+ Detected problem:
+ 1) The checkbox of Updates > hardy-security sets its status searching for
"archive.ubuntu.com"
+ 2) Checking/unchecking looks for and adds/removes "security.ubuntu.com", and
the program thinks it's third-party software
+
+ Temporary fix:
+ 1) sudo sed -e 's/security\.ubuntu\.com/archive\.ubuntu\.com/'
/etc/apt/sources.list > /etc/apt/sources.list.tmp
+ sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.tmp /etc/apt/sources.list
+ sudo apt-get update
+
+ 2) Don't uncheck/check the hardy-security in Software Sources until it's
+ fixed.

[Bug 135324] Re: Gutsy: OpenOffice thumbnails transparent

2008-07-08 Thread Bruce van der Kooij
What package is supposed to provide thumbnailing for OpenDocument
documents? I know there's a couple of scripts floating around, but those
aren't in the repository. I'd be willing to provide a patch to default
to a white background when transparent if people prefer this.

[Bug 244093] Re: Checking security repository in Updates adds deb line to Third-Party Software

2008-07-08 Thread itsjustarumour
I can confirm this bug on Hardy 8.04.1 32-bit since recent updates.

All three of my Ubuntu installs are demonstrating the same problem - I
go to System>Administration>Software Sources>Updates tab, and I am
unable to check the tick-box for "Important security updates (hardy-
security)".

[Bug 238212] Re: F-spot crashes when uploading to picasaweb

2008-07-08 Thread John Lawler
It sounds like this may be the same thing I just experienced recently
using the current Hardy F-Spot version, 0.4.3.1.

I believe that the problem has something to do with attempting to click
"Add" when using a PicasaWeb account that has no galleries defined. It's
understandable why the developer would've missed this, since I'm sure he
had plenty of galleries defined during development.

But I'm reasonably certain that it could be duplicated by removing all
galleries from the test account and trying the import. It's probably a
simple null pointer deal or empty array that's assumed to have one
entry, etc.

Additionally, when this first happened, I had already loaded one
PicasaWeb account into the list (by the way, I like the feature of being
able to upload to multiple PicasaWeb accounts), which had galleries
defined and then was trying to add a new one which had no galleries.

That's when the bug happened, but I think it persisted even after I had
removed the original account (w/ galleries), so my problem is likely
related only to the lack of galleries.

[Bug 238212] Re: F-spot crashes when uploading to picasaweb

2008-07-08 Thread John Lawler
Oh, I should mention that the work around was to manually create a
gallery through the PicasaWeb UI, then I was able to proceed as normal,
so I'm quite confident of the cause of the problem I'm reporting.

[Bug 107750] Re: F-spot crashes when trying to export to Web Gallery

2008-07-08 Thread John Lawler
Never mind on this one, I just read the user was reporting a problem
with "Web Gallery". I'm talking about PicasaWeb export. I suppose they
may be related, but I'm going to assume not.

I think this bug is a bit closer:
