[Bug 251105] [NEW] `tput init' works inconsistently in gnome-terminal, but not xterm, etc.
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 8.04, gnome-terminal 2.22.1-0ubuntu2, libvte9 1:0.16.13-1ubuntu1. Using tput(1) to send the terminal's terminfo init string to gnome-terminal, and hence vte as I understand it, gives inconsistent results. It often fails to initialise the terminal back to its defaults. Here's a command to show the desired behaviour. tr \\0 \\012 /dev/zero | head -100 | while read f; do tput setf 4; printf X; tput setf 0; printf Y; done It gives an alternating sequence of red X's and black Y's. Replacing the `setf 0', which is setting the foreground colour to black, with `init', as in tr \\0 \\012 /dev/zero | head -100 | while read f; do tput setf 4; printf X; tput init; printf Y; done gives many red Y's, i.e. the `tput init' is *sometimes* failing to have effect. I suspect it's a subtle timing issue where vte is examining the time between characters in escape sequences to determine if they are, in fact, an escape *sequence*. Note, xterm(1), and other terminal emulators I've tried, give consistent results, the `tput init' is always interpreted the same way. Here's a couple of bits of information that may be useful to confirm it isn't something odd on my local setup. $ echo $TERM xterm $ tput init | od -c 000 033 [ ! p 033 [ ? 3 ; 4 l 033 [ 4 l 033 020 021 $ This bug causes legacy programs that work consistently on other Unix and Linux systems to have display glitches with varying impact depending on when vte decides not to honour the request. The red/black XYs is just my simplification. :-) ** Affects: vte (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- `tput init' works inconsistently in gnome-terminal, but not xterm, etc. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251105 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to vte in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 251083] Re: Gedit complains about being unable to make temp backups when saving
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem (be specific - ie, how you launched gedit and opened the file that you're editing, the exact path of the file that you're editing, the permissions on the folder containing the file that you're editing), 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). [Bug 227186] Re: Evince doesn't print PDF files
I have the same issue. When I try to print the evince process jumps up to 100% CPU usage (or rather 50% for me since I have a dual core CPU). On two occasions, however, the printer printed an error. The first time this was presumably from a normal attempt to print. The second time it was when I tried to print the print preview. The printed error is as follows: ERROR NAME; limitcheck COMMAND; LZWDecode OPERAND STACK; --filetype-- --nametype-- --dicttype-- I can also confirm that of the two pages Simon submitted, the I'm able to print the one that supposedly prints, but unable to print the one that supposedly doesn't. According to the printer configuration tool, my printer's make and model is Brother HL-5250DN BR-Script3. I connect to it using Ethernet via a router. It'- Device URI is socket://192.168.1.100:9100. I'm using Evince Document Viewer 2.22.2. I have no problems printing in other programmes. Today is the first time I've been unable to print a PDF in Evince. When Evince fails to print anything, the document never appears in the printing queue. I've tried connecting to the printer using USB. The document appears in the printing queue briefly but does not print. I also tried using a Canan Pixma iP4300. Again Evince used 100% for a period of time. Then the document appeared in the print queue. It did print, but at an unacceptably low quality (very blurred). If I try to print other pdf documents (such as the working PDF) Evince does not hog CPU, and the document prints very promptly. Note: the document that I was first having trouble with is Tutorial 1 Questions at http://www.math.canterbury.ac.nz/material/MATH109/08/S2/C/?s=5 and I do not have any problems with the second tutorial listed on that page. -- Evince doesn't print PDF files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/227186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evince in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

To produce: 1. Launch gedit. 2. Open an existing text file. 3. Modify text file. 4. Click save. [Bug 250858] Re: Ekiga doesn't show me the (normal) phone numbers I have stored in Evolution
I only use Ekiga to call real phones, so this is an important RFE for me. IMHO it shouldn't need to be all that complicated. The automation Łukasz suggests would be great but not a priority. I think the priority is something that works, then it can be improved. What about a collapsible dialog which presents all the numbers evolution has for that person and a radio button to select one. (Can Ekiga probe the PC-to-Phone to see if a number is acceptable without actually calling it?) With a number selected Ekiga can then launch a popup dialog with the number ready to edit which says something like: -- Please confirm Ekiga's phone number for this contact. [ +45 (76) 12345678 (extension 345) ] Please check that this number is formatted in a way your PC-to-Phone account supports. Typical problems are: * Missing country and regional codes * Missing '0' or '00' starting the country code * Using plus to start a dialing code, ie. i+45/i * Using brackets around a dialing code ie. i(45)/i * Spaces in the phone number, ie. i0045 12345678/i Please refer to your PC_to-Phone account documentation for specific issues. If the number is rejected Ekiga can recreate the popup dialog with a warning at the top something like: ! Error. Your PC-to-Phone account has rejected this number. Please confirm Ekiga's phone number for this contact. [ +45 (76) 12345678 (extension 345) ] Please check that this number is formatted in a way your PC-to-Phone account supports. [Bug 251142] [NEW] sudoku auto-hint is incorrect, or incorrectly reports numbers as wrong
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-games In the gnome-games package, in the sudoku program, I occasionally find that the hint function is broken, that is, it gives incorrect numbers. So for instance, when it is possible for a square to be either a 4, 5, or 6, it fails to list 6 as a possibility, which often leads to contradictions such as two squares both having only the number 1 as a possibility, when other numbers are possible. Also, the game occasionally marks one of my entries as red, (meaning there is a contradiction somewhere) when it should not (because there is no contradiction). The problem happens intermittently, but I have been unable to replicate at will. It happens almost randomly, or perhaps on certain puzzles. The end result of this however, is that some puzzles are seemingly unsolvable unless you ignore the hints. I've attached a screenshot demonstrating the first problem, where the auto-hint is incorrect. In this puzzle I was working on, there are two sets of notes in the squares. The top set are my own notes, (which should mostly be correct) and the bottom row are the automatically generated notes, which are definitely incorrect (and yes, I tried filling in another square and clearing it to make sure that the auto- hint was updated). For example, take a look at the square in the first row, fifth column, between the 7 and the 3. I have noted that 5, 6, and 8 are possibilities for the square, but the game excludes 6 as a possibility, for no apparent reason. Or, look at column 3, rows 6 and 9. I have listed 1 and 6 as possibilites for both, and the auto-hint only lists 1 as a possibility for both. Now, if you were thinking of closing this bug and writing this off as a user error, *please* take a close look at the screenshot. I'm not crazy, I'm not making a mistake. The computer is wrong, I tell you! Wrong! [Bug 251141] Re: evince crashes after clicking print
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: evince (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: New = Invalid -- evince crashes after clicking print https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251141 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 250089] Re: Gnome keyboard applet layout wrong after reboot - third level modifier stuck on
I've also had a weird problem with the keyboard (not exactly the same). I had us and es layouts activated (es by default). In hardy, everytime I rebooted my machine, the characters were weird: I thought it was something like greek, maybe it was just the third level modifier. The temporal solution was to get into SystemPreferencesKeyboard and change my keyboard from 'generic' to something else and then back to 'generic'. That solved it until the next reboot. Today I tried removing the .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard folder, and now I just have the es layout, but no more weird problems when I reboot. [Bug 251222] [NEW] Gnome-screensaver blanks screen except for panels
Public bug reported: I noticed recently on my Hardy system that gnome-screensaver locks the screen properly except for the panels at the top and bottom of the screen. Generally the panels are inoperative while the screen is locked with the exception of Eyes 2.22.2 which still follow the mouse. Not sure what to do at this point. Looking for a litte advice... [Bug 245126] Re: FTP connections bookmarks on the Places menu are not saved
Thank you for your bug. Please understand that mounts are different than bookmarks. Mounts do not persist across session currently, but bookmarks do. If the bookmark is not available in your Places-Bookmarks menu, or in Nautilus' Places sidebar, then this is a bug. However, if the mount link on the desktop goes away, that is expected behavior. You can reconnect the mount at session startup by clicking on the bookmark. If the bookmark is not appearing, please let us know so we can investigate that. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: New = Incomplete -- FTP connections bookmarks on the Places menu are not saved https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/245126 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 235560] Re: Connect to smb server by name doesn't work, but by IP address does
If you are using opendns, then address resolution will not work correctly because samba gives precedence to DNS records over broadcast name resolution by default. This is considered a reasonable default because broadcast name resolution is not scalable and should be a method of last resort; however, opendns breaks the assumption that DNS servers won't return bogus records when asked for hosts that they have no clue about. This should be considered a bug in opendns, but since they are unlikely to fix that misbehavior any time soon, you can work around this by setting the following value in the [global] section of your /etc/samba/smb.conf: name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host Alternatively, you can configure your network to use a wins server instead (though this is probably overkill for a home network). The other problem mentioned in this bug report is when 'wins' is mentioned in /etc/nsswitch.conf. I think this is a bad idea in general because NetBIOS name resolution semantics are not entirely compatible with traditional 'host' lookups, but since we provide the nss_wins backend we should at least try to fix the bugs in it. And there are bugs in it, which may cause problems particularly when called by something which itself uses samba code (i.e., anything that uses libsmbclient, including nautilus). As a workaround for this bug, you can again adjust your name resolve order to either 'lmhosts wins bcast host' to use NSS as a last resort, or just 'lmhosts wins bcast' if you know you should never need NSS lookups of hostnames. ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: nautilus = samba Status: New = Confirmed -- Connect to smb server by name doesn't work, but by IP address does https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/235560 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
