[Bug 241574] Re: playback status should persist across sessions

2008-08-01 Thread Hew McLachlan
** Summary changed:

- Add option for start playback from last stop on player start
+ playback status should persist across sessions

** Description changed:

- It would be great if you'll add such future as resuming playback from last
stop on player start. It's very lazy to start playback manually every time.
- P.S. And thank you for the Rhythmbox :)
+ Rhythmbox should support an option that remembers playback status across
+ sessions. This would allow a song that was being played on close to
+ automatically resume when rhythmbox is next opened.

[Bug 213432] Re: Open a folder doesn't switch desktop in spatial mode

2008-08-01 Thread starNIX
I just noticed this pattern, if you are on say, desktop 2 and you have a
pidgin window open, then you minimize that window and go to another desktop
and choose that window from the tasklist, it doesn't take you back to
desktop 2 and "Un-minimize" that window, which was the old behavior in gutsy.
It doesn't unminimize the window at all. If you rightclick the tasks panel in
the taskbar, it still offers the option to "Un-Minimize"
that window. No matter how many times you try, it doesn't show you that
window and keeps the windows status as minimized. Keep in mind, "Restore to
native workspace" is enabled. Does anyone else see this behavior? I am using
Metacity.

+ gstreamer alsa mixer renders gnome volume controls useless

** Description changed:

- Primary example (only GNOME affected)
+ Primary example (only GNOME affected, focus of this bug, prelim. patch for it
below)
  1. Open gnome-volume-control
  2. option a. Use keyboard to control volume. It is immediately messed up and
the progress bar on the volume control disappears. You can see with alsamixer
that one channel is randomly muted now and then.
  2. option b. Rapidly adjust PCM volume with the channels locked. The
channels will eventually loosen up or one will go to 0.

GNOME without pulseaudio and without software mixing still has the
problem. The problem seems DIRECTLY related to GNOME, but it's also
possible this bug is similar to the one below. The first problem is
MUCH worse and ruins daily, practical use of the OS. The second is an
observation and not intended to be the focal point of this bug report.
I didn't see random muting with the second bug (that I can remember) but
I saw a ton with the first.

  --

  Secondary example (all desktops):
  1. Open gnome-alsamixer
  2. Open gnome-volume-control
  3. Open alsamixer

Adjust PCM volume with text-mode alsamixer. The two channels get out of
  sync very quickly.

  sudo sh -c "echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online"

This command actually fixes the GNOME volume control on one of my dual-
core systems (Intrepid/emu10k1). It is consistently reproducible and
directly related to that command. On the other system (Hardy custom
2.6.26/cmipci), the command seems to have no effect and the problem
  remains.

Something is wrong with the locking or mutexing of the volume controls
in an underlying component of Ubuntu. For some people, that means even
rudimentary volume control with the keyboard is problematic.

  Affected drivers:
  - cmipci
  - emu10k1
  - possibly every audio driver

The second example happens on systems even with the 2nd cpu disabled,
just a little less. With the first example it doesn't seem to matter.

Intrepid as of 7/24/2008 is affected.

I was not able to demonstrate any inconsistencies with the text-mode
alsamixer when GNOME or KDE was not open, but that does not mean the
race is not somewhere in the kernel either. Moving the volume controls
with keys is a lot less stressful on the drivers than using a smooth
slider or running apps that monitor the volume in real-time.

I have tried every fix I have seen, and none have fixed the problem.

  Possibly related bugs:
  - Bug 126333

From my debugging, a zero is first being written to a volume channel for
some reason. I am not sure why or the source of it. Mixers then read
this zero and the mistake carries on from there.

I will attach some library call logs from my debugging, but I can not
say that they are reliable. "workinglogs" is from adjusting it slowly
up and then slowly down in the text-mode alsamixer program with no
desktop environment loaded, only a TTY.

"brokenlogs" shows what happens when I use my keyboard to do the same
thing. The volume is jumping down periodically or going to zero.

  _snd_mixer_selem_set_volume s->str[0].vol[1] = 18
  elem_write_volume s->str[0].vol[0] = 0
  elem_write_volume s->str[0].vol[1] = 18

The second write command giving alsa a zero makes no sense, and
completely destroys the linearity of the adjustment. But I don't know
where it's coming from. I don't know if it's adjusting the same track
number even or if it is the cause of the problem, but it seems to
  correlate.

Each log file (mylogn) in the archives is tracking a different part of
the sound control subsystem. mylog5 is the lowest level and
  mylog1/mylog2(gstreamer) are the highest. text-mode didn't use
mylog1/mylog2, only 3-5 which are farther down the line in the sound
  system.

Both machines were dual-core Intel Core 2 running x86_64 architecture
Ubuntu with 4GB of RAM. All tracing was done on the first system
  (cmipci).

[Bug 126333] Re: Regression - Volume Control using gnome panel applet and keyboard shortcut alternates mute / % volume during sliding

2008-08-01 Thread xtknight
For those who are still having the problem, can you try my new gst-
plugins-base0.10 Hardy packages here?

https://launchpad.net/~xt-knight/+archive?field.name_filter=gst-plugins-

I would like to know if it fixes the problem for you. It does for me.
The keyboard controls are fixed and I believe the chain-breaking is, as
well.

[Bug 246189] Re: Nautilus can't open usb flash drive

2008-08-01 Thread Ken Tindle
Ok, attached here is "gvfs-mount -li", per request.

It appears this isn't Nautilus after all, nor a kernel or hal problem.
It seems gvfs on amd64 is broken. I note I can manually mount the usb
flash drive, which doesn't need gvfs or fuse, but Nautilus does now need
this for a mount. Nautilus is showing icons OK because hal is working.
The gvfs-bin package seems to be in terrible trouble on amd64, if its
publish log is any indication.

This theory seems to fit available facts- but I'll happily let others
more schooled on Ubuntu weigh in.

And yes, I did reboot after installing the July 31 gvfs-bin package, and
things didn't change, at all. I can manually mount, and then use
Nautilus to see the contents of a USB flash drive. But the actual USB
Drive icon will not mount, with the generic error dialog.

[Bug 254113] [NEW] Rhythmbox could burn CDs faster

2008-08-01 Thread Thrift
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

1)lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Rekease: 8.04

2)apt-cache policy rhythmbox
0.11.5-0ubuntu8

3) Once CD burning begins I expect it to not have to go through two
steps with two seperate progress bars and instead be able to convert and
record on the fly. Also I expect that if I have a multicore or multicpu
system it will use both processors to convert the audio.

4) CD burning is done in two seperate steps. One to convert the music.
One to write it to the CD. The audio conversion uses only 1 CPU/core.

CDs on my system would burn twice as fast if these fixes were made. I'm
sure there are quite a few people who expect the burning process to go
quicker.

[Bug 254111] [NEW] rhythmbox cd burning is not intuitive

2008-08-01 Thread Thrift
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

1)lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Rekease: 8.04

2)apt-cache policy rhythmbox
0.11.5-0ubuntu8

3) I expect to be able to right click on an album in the Album view and
select, "burn" or "create cd" or something like that.

4) Right clicking on the album does nothing. I had to know to use the
shift key to select every song in the album and then right click the
selected list and choose Add to playlist -> New Playlist, give it a
name, find the playlist in the far left list, right click on that and
select Create Audio CD. Once it was done i had to also remove this
playlist to get back to the original state.

This seems pretty easy to fix and is not at all intuitive at the moment.

[Bug 254109] [NEW] rhythmbox lags when not using ESD

2008-08-01 Thread Thrift
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release: 8.04

apt-cache policy rhythmbox
0.11.5-0ubuntu8

What I expected to happen
I unchecked Enable software sound mixing (ESD) in the gnome Sound Preferences.
When I did this I expected rhythmbox box to play music just like before unless
another piece of software was using the soundcard or at least give a decent
error message.

What happened
Once ESD was unchecked, the first audio file may play correctly, but subsequent
clicks on the next song button made the entire application lag and appear to
lock up (Not repainting the window) for almost a minute. Many clicks on next
would basically make it crash. There was no error in a terminal when I ran
rhythmbox from the terminal, even when using debug output.

At least an error explaining the issue would be good. I have had ESD unchecked
for a very long time, and only by luck realized that checking it fixed the
problem.

[Bug 246189] Re: Nautilus can't open usb flash drive

2008-08-01 Thread Ken Tindle
When the flash drive is inserted, kernel modules are modprobed and hal
gets fired up, causing the icon to appear. Evidence: nothing in
.xsession-errors, happy kernel module activity in /var/log/messages, and
happy kernel modules and hal activity in /var/log/syslog, which is
attached as "syslog" to this. "mount" does NOT show the drive as
mounted.

gvfs-mount was not present on my system. Synaptic could not find it in
any repository. I downloaded from:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/amd64/gvfs-bin

the raw .deb file and installed it with dpkg, which worked. It appears
gvfs-bin is having a colorful history on amd64?

I have to continue in another addition, it appears only one attachment
per comment?

[Bug 209464] Re: When I login, I receive and error that the permissions are wrong for the file .dmrc

2008-08-01 Thread CalcProgrammer1
How would you go about turning this annoying message off? I'm hosting a
server (the PC is a dedicated server) so locking my home directory
(containing files shared by FTP) would be a BAD IDEA. However, I VNC to
this machine remotely, and this error is popping up and preventing the
system from completely loading (thus it doesn't load VNC server until
someone clicks OK, but I'm not going to be here to click OK, thus
rendering it USELESS). I WANT others to access my home directory, I
just want this dumb message to be gone. What can I do to fix it?

[Bug 254095] [NEW] gvfs-fuse causes rsync to fail

2008-08-01 Thread satyriasis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

gvfs and gvfs-fuse 0.2.5-0ubuntu2
Ubuntu 8.04.1
Linux 2.6.24-19-generic
rsync 2.6.9-6ubuntu2

I maintain backups using dirvish, which writes sequential images using
rsync. Dirvish is set up to back up parts of my root partition and my
home partition to a third partition. The rsync command run by dirvish
(to back up my home partition) is:

rsync -vrltH --delete -pgo --stats -D --numeric-ids -x \
--exclude-from=/snapshot/satyr-home/20080731-home/exclude \
--link-dest=/snapshot/satyr-home/20080730-home/tree /home/ \
/snapshot/satyr-home/20080731-home/tree

Upon normal login to a GNOME desktop, $HOME/.gvfs has the following
permissions:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -ld .gvfs
dr-x-- 2 jorge jorge 0 2008-08-01 18:37 .gvfs

When dirvish attempts to back up my home partition with ~/.gvfs in the
preceding condition, it fails with the following rsync error:

rsync: readlink "/home/jorge/.gvfs" failed: Permission denied (13)
rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(977)
[sender=2.6.9]

A similar rsync command to back up my root partition terminates
successfully.

In order to run rsync on my home partition, I source a script from
~/.profile that includes the following:

/bin/fusermount -zu $HOME/.gvfs
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-fuse-daemon $HOME/.gvfs

That gives me a directory with the following permissions:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -ld .gvfs
drwx-- 2 jorge jorge 4096 2008-07-26 22:11 .gvfs

With ~/.gvfs so constituted, rsync successfully backs up my /home
partition, and dirvish terminates with 0.

I've had this problem over the last three upgrades to gvfs and its
cousins. I'm not experiencing any other problems related to .gvfs, but
this one seems relatively serious to me.

I apologize if this is a duplicate report.

Thanks for looking into it.

Hm. I'm using ubuntu64, Evolution 2.22.3.1, and I have a similar issue.
One of my IMAP logins is remembered all the time. My second IMAP and my

I know and I wanted to do that myself, but I'm not so familiar with the
ubuntu web-based bug reporting interface to do it myself.
Feel free to do it if I won't be able to do it myself in a timely

[Bug 192122] Re: wine wants to open shell scripts

2008-08-01 Thread Scott Ritchie
Here's Wine's debian/wine.mime file:

application/x-msdos-program; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
application/x-msdownload; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
application/exe; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
application/x-exe; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
application/dos-exe; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
vms/exe; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
application/x-winexe; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
application/msdos-windows; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
application/x-msdos-program; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Executable
application/x-msi; /usr/bin/wine '%s'; description=Windows Installer archive

I believe application/x-exe is equivalent to application/x-executable since
there's no definition of x-exe in shared-mime-info, but I haven't tested
switching the two.

Here's the x-executable entry in shared-mime-info:

<_comment>executable

Here's one of the relevant entries in shared-mime-info for ruby scripts
(there are similar ones for python/shell scripts):

<_comment>Ruby script

I'm going to attempt a patch by switching the sub-class-of x-executable
to just duplicate the magic in x-executable and see if it works. At
this rate, though, it looks like another shared-mime-info bug rather
than a Wine problem.

[Bug 192122] Re: wine wants to open shell scripts

2008-08-01 Thread Scott Ritchie
Ok, I can now confirm this and I believe I know the source of the issue.
The problem occurs with shell scripts, python scripts, ruby scripts, and
possibly others.

Basically, Wine is (correctly) associated with MIME type
"Application/x-executable", since this covers some .exe files (including
non-Windows ones generated by Winelib). shared-mime-info classifies
shell, python, and ruby scripts as sub-classes of
application/x-executable, so anything that can open x-executables is
used to open the scripts (in this case Wine). Since "sub-type of
executable" is listed before "sub-type of text file" for scripts,
handlers for executables (Wine) show up before handlers for text files,
and thus Wine gets used to open it.

One possible fix is to get rid of the sub-typing in shared-mime-info.
It's unlikely anything that could open "executables" should also be
opening python/ruby scripts in this way (in fact Wine is probably the
only program associated with executables at all). Another possible
workaround is to just switch text/application so that the default
becomes the text editor handler, but this leaves the problem with Wine
still being listed as a handler for something it isn't.

[Bug 218541] Package assigned

2008-08-01 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in totem.

For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of
applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This
can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the
application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more
about this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 201786] Re: ssh Agent admitted failure to sign using the key

2008-08-01 Thread Martin Maney
Just banged nose-on into this on a new Hardy install (but using the old
/home); it was up to date against the official repositories a few hours
ago. None of the above fixes really worked for me, but (so far - simple
remote logins from the xterm with the agent providing authentication)
what's working for me is replacing /usr/lib/gnome-keyring/gnome-keyring-
ask with a symlink to /bin/false. I no longer get the stupid and
useless popup dialog when I run, eg., ssh-add -l, or ssh
[EMAIL PROTECTED] - it just works, as it had done for many years in every
distro before Hardy.

[Bug 247003] Re: gnome-session makes Xorg crash in xf86SetScrnInfoModes

2008-08-01 Thread Henry Wertz
"Me too".
 I upgraded from 8.04.1 for PowerPC to 8.10... on a well, it's a
Frankenstein. 1250mhz G4 Windtunnel motherboard, but stuck into a Compaq SP750
case. Yeah.. kind of a prank. (When I was on vacation, my coworkers backed up
my data, pulled the SP750 board, replaced the G4 with an identical 8.04 PPC
setup, complete with proper USB adapter so I had the same IBM Model M keyboard
hooked up and everything; they took bets on how long it'd take me to notice...
about 4 hours. It was pretty obvious after I rebooted and heard the mac
startup sound & Mac boot loader; otherwise, not obvious at all.)

Excerpt from Xorg.0.log.old, which is attached. The failsafe terminal works; I
put on xfce4, which was super-stripped but a friend showed me how to add some
menus and launchers; it doesn't crash either.

[Bug 236828] Re: Gnome desktop freezes with desktop applet

2008-08-01 Thread Mart van Ineveld
Thanks for your response.

The clock applet once and awhile froze my desktop (that is: the panel),
but I discovered a work around (killing the gnome panel in a terminal).
I think it has something to do with the contents of the clock applet
dropdown (locations or tasks or something. Maybe a connection to some
server is too slow and the applet is freezing the panel?). I saw on the
internet that I am not the only one with this kind of experience.

The last couple of weeks I experienced no problems however. But I do not
feel comfortable yet about this one issue.

changing the system, preferences, sounds, music and video option to alsa

[Bug 203782] Re: vinagre should support low colour (color) depth, encodings

2008-08-01 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Joining in, too. Vinagre is so slow, something must be wrong with the
implementation and/or design choices internally. I'm currently running
Vinagre connected to a *local* VNC-session (TightVNC-server) on a brand
new quad-core 2.5GHz system with 4GB RAM, and guess what.. IT'S SLOW.
Sad, really, because I like how I can manage multiple sessions in
Vinagre, and the better desktop integration it provides.
