[Bug 305379] [NEW] gnome [ubuntu 8.10] ninja windows attack - hidden windows

2008-12-04 Thread LimCore
Public bug reported:

(Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 uptodate, gnome desktop - no effects)

By default some windows are ninjas - on creation they are immediately
hidden under other windows, which makes it really confusing.

Example:
start kwalletmanger, click to open a wallet.

The dialog box will open to confirm access (allow / deny / allow once etc)
this window is hidden totally, only indication is new entry in applications
list, which by default is not very visible in Gnome.

This all is quite confusing for users.

Other example is kdewallet password input box, that pops below kmail
program that tries to access kwallet.

Solution: new windows should be usually visible (placed on top)

[Bug 285682] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 can't mount digital camera showing a window popup message: -60 could not lock the device message

2008-12-04 Thread ode
I have the same problem.
I'm using a Kodak DX6490.

I get the error message "An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not lock
the device'): Camera is already in use."
and the dmesg:
[ 4607.780064] usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2

libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0.1400.4[b781e000+395000]

I could use the card reader but I had some pictures on the internal memory.
I was able to get the photos off the camera by partly following the workaround
at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gthumb/+bug/287689:
In Removable Drives and Media Preferences (System > Preferences > Removable
Drives and Media > Cameras > Digital Camera), uncheck the Import digital
photographs when connected.
I then unmounted the camera in Nautilus when I connect it.
However using "gphoto --import-photos" on the command line still didn't work.
However adding a sudo in front of the command enabled me to import the photos.

Now trying the command again it is not working now.
I get the error "An error occurred in the io-library ('Unspecified error'): No
error description available"
and dmesg:
[ 7809.352154] usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 15

Open nautilus:
Write smb://yourfileserver/your_share/ in nautilus address field.
Copy case_Wellcome.pdf from the Ubuntu Examples folder to the smb share.
Observe that double clicking the newly copied file opens it for reading in
evince.
Change the name to case_Wellcome#.pdf
Observe that double clicking the renamed file will give the supplied screenshot

[Bug 305339] [NEW] Intrepid regression: Suspend fails to resume on Twinhead H12Y clone laptop

2008-12-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

I have an Everex StepNote 2053 T laptop (see below **) that doesn't
resume after a suspend in Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid; worked fine in Hardy.

More details: I recently updated from Hardy to Intrepid, using the
Update functionality of the GUI-based package manager. I've since
updated to the latest package releases, and am running the
2.6.27-9-generic kernel at the moment (will attach more detailed system
info). I have the SDHCI and SDHCI-PCI modules blacklisted (see Bug
#187671), but other than that it's a fairly standard Intrepid install.
I'm apparently running version 0.114 of the acpi-support package.

When I boot into this kernel, the earlier 2.6.27-7-generic kernel, or a
2.6.27.7 kernel I compiled form kernel.org source, and I suspend the
laptop from the System / Shut Down menu item in Gnome, the laptop fails
to resume. Booting into an old 2.6.26 kernel I compiled myself from
kernel.org source, suspend/resume works. It also used to work fine in
Hardy using kernels supplied by Ubuntu (which were conveniently erased
when I upgraded to Intrepid) when I was still running Hardy.

What I'm seeing with the current kernels, after I suspend and then hit the
space bar to try to resume, is a blinking cursor in the upper-left of the
otherwise black laptop screen. In fact, before I added this line to my startup
sequence
echo 3 > /proc/sys/kernel/acpi_video_flags
I couldn't even see the cursor -- the screen was just black (I added this line
to startup because a friend with a different laptop was seeing a black screen
and this fixed his problem, but it didn't fix my problem, just made the cursor
visible). The fan and drives start up and make noise, but the laptop isn't
usable.

I've tried control-alt-f1 (and other f-keys) and control-alt-backspace,
but they have no effect.

I will attach lspci output and some other system output, and do some
more debugging (I found debugging guides
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3066404)... will report these
in separate comments, coming shortly, but I wanted to get the bug
reported first.

** Here is a list of laptops which are apparently all clones of this one:

[Bug 305305] Re: usb hdd not appearing in computer

2008-12-04 Thread Richard Seguin
I'm sorry that this is a generic reply, but it has everything that we
need to move forward with this.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the
Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the
resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the
resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

Kubuntu 8.04 still has the feature to select a monitor type in the
screen resolution tool. I've been told you can take the config file
for X.org from this version or a previous version of Ubuntu and
overwrite the one used in 8.10 to correct the problem. What would
really fix it is if the option to manually change these settings in
the screen resolution GUI were put back in. Relying totally on
autodetection was a bad decision, its not that X.org is ready, its
that now all hardware types follow the rules and then there is the
closed source drivers which are a part of that chain. Someone needs
to bring this up to the powers that be in the community who make the
decisions as to what goes into each new version of Ubuntu and its
variants (Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc) and let them know this needs to be
fixed.

[Bug 251337] [NEW] Shutdown from XFCE returns to login if inbound ssh session active

2008-12-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

(split off from bug #196816)
On Ubuntu Hardy Heron, if an inbound ssh session (from another system) is
active, a shutdown initiated from an XFCE session fails to shut down the system
and instead returns to the login screen. With a Gnome session the shutdown
proceeds normally. An outbound ssh session, from tty1 for example, does not
inhibit the XFCE-initiated shutdown sequence.

On Xubuntu Intrepid Ibex Alpha 2 this occurs with both XFCE and Gnome
(added via ubuntu-desktop). Neither will shut down if an inbound ssh
session is active.

I can't see any differences in the logs between a Gnome-initiated
shutdown and an XFCE-initiated one. The issue is 100% reproducible.

but when I boot the machine, the login screen doesn't show up. Instead
only the "x" cursor shows up in the middle of the screen (one time
changing to a clock or something and then staying in that state), but it

challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be
dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on
the crash report you wish to submit.

automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more

[Bug 299365] [NEW] xubuntu - screen brightness dims after screensaver initializes

2008-12-04 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Xubuntu 8.10, all updates applied.

After the screen saver has initialized and I come back from being away,
the screen brightness is dimmed considerably. Xbacklight doesn't work
and fn+right arrow is buggy.

Fn+right arrow which controls screen brightness on my laptop does not
work properly, if repeatedly tapping the right arrow (fast) it seems to
get confused and the brightness goes up and down fast in succession. It
does work if done slowly. If I hold down fn+right arrow the brightness
does go to full light. No screen representation when using the function
keys like in Gnome.

xbacklight works fine after I manually put the screen at highest
brightness slowly tapping fn+rightarrow.

I don't know of this is one bug or two (or more) but at least here is
the base report.

Expected results:
1. Screensaver should un-dim the screen after it ends.
2. Fn key combo should not be picky as to how fast you tap the keys.
3. Xbacklight should work, it works right in Ubuntu 8.04LTS.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 7720 (not gamer edition)

[Bug 240916] Re: Screen Resolution Limitations

2008-12-04 Thread Przemysław Kulczycki
I'm also affected by this bug.
I'm using Ubuntu for over 3 years, and I've survived many difficulties with
configuration, but now I must say that the new Xorg resolution autodetection
simply sucks!
It can't detect correct resolution settings on both my laptop (ati, 8.04) and
pc (nvidia, 8.10), using both open and closed driver. I always have to
configure xorg.conf by hand because that's the only option to get the best
results.
Not having any possibility to manually choose graphics card and monitor in GUI
is a serious limitation and a regression from previous versions.
Yes, I know that power users like me can type in whole xorg.conf by hand, but
that's painful and takes much more time than clicking in the gui and choosing
all the stuff manually.
I miss the old tools from breezy-feisty era.

[Bug 305311] [NEW] Inconsistent use of tabs and spaces in /python-support/python2.5/pygtk.py

2008-12-04 Thread Lilli
Public bug reported:

I was trying to run a python application that uses pygtk.py, and it was
crashing due to an inconsistent use of tabs and spaces. This occurred
in three places. Searching through the document, I was able to change
those lines so that they were only using spaces. This solved the
problem, but I *stupidly* forgot to note which lines I changed; my
apologies.

I am running Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10) and I have the package python-
gobject 2.15.3-0ubuntu. Dpkg-query tells me that this is the package
that owns pygtk.py. I hope you can quickly clean up the file, despite
the lack of details. Let me know if this was an error on my side or if
you need any more information.

Cheers,
Lilli

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese malfunctioning with UVCVIDEO webcams (was cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards)

2008-12-04 Thread atorch
Cheese would not work for me several weeks ago (it would always hang at
startup, without ever displaying an image), but today it functioned
correctly. The resolution at first was extremely low, but I was able to
increase it without any crash. Then I tried changing the effects and
cheese stopped responding. Even if I kill the program and load it
again, it hangs immediately.

Two questions:

1 - I'm fairly certain that cheese hangs at startup because it is trying
to apply effects. But because it always hangs, I cannot tell it to stop
trying. Is there any file I can edit to get around this?

2 - Has anyone else encountered this behavior, ie cheese working
correctly so long as no effects are selected? What might be causing
this and how can it be fixed?

Are there any custom DEBs out there that have a patch applied for this?

[Bug 305059] Re: crash when clicking youtube links in the search window

2008-12-04 Thread goto
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
