[Bug 279569] Re: Screennresolution applet no longer asks for confirmation of new resolution settings

2008-12-27 Thread Eric Forgeot
it's a very stupid default behavior. I've experienced this on archlinux too, so
it's probably a gnome upstream modification.
My screen doesn't support some default resolution in 800x600, so switching to
it will make the screen black, without confirmation.

[Bug 124326] Re: Shrinking to applet/notification area should have its own title bar button

2008-12-27 Thread aeosynth
I really don't think this makes any sense for most apps.

I don't think 'Always on Top' makes sense for most apps, but I love the
fact that when I need it, it's there. I don't see anything wrong with
providing a new, unobtrusive feature for people to play with.

I guess we are thinking about different things, because I would like all
windows to have 'minimize to tray' functionality, instead of simply
providing more control over the windows/programs which already have
this. I apologize for wasting your time, and will fill my own bug
report.

Cheers.

I work from xd card in printer slot (for photo test) - works fine. so it
must be a f-spot problem IMO. Good luck.

[Bug 137527] Re: Totem should notify users about installing libdvdread3 and libdvdcss2 to read encrypted DVD

2008-12-27 Thread wordsmyth
Hi There: I'm an Australian resident and I finally managed to solve my
problems with Totem - and VLC - with patiene and diligence, by using
Google to seek what I needed to know i.e downloading Ubuntu Restricted
Extras and appropriate DVD codecs. But I'm a newbie, and it took a
helluva lot of work. If these instructions were readily provided by
Totem VLC in their program, this wouldn't be necessary. Those with
similar problems, download and install the Extras package and then go
to Medibuntu : http://packages.medibuntu.org/ to download install the
extra codecs : libdvdcss2 and w32codecs. Easy enough. But it took me an
unconscionably long time to get there ...

lesser artifacts are seen in *every* page you visit.

I have to add that other problems have arisen also for other parts of

imo. Mostly the problem seems to arise when using pixbufs (?).

[Bug 310575] [NEW] A3 pdf file is cropped and printed on A4 paper

2008-12-27 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: cups

I have several A3 sized pdf files that do not print correctly:
A3 landscape or portait format prints cropped to A4 paper. The landscape print
is incorrectly rotated by 90° and then cropped to A4.
I print to a Postscript printer that understands PDF directly. If i upload the
file directly to the printer via web interface (no cups in the processing) and
let the printer decide on paper size, it prints correctly on A3 paper. I have
tested this on 1.3.9-2ubuntu5 (Intrepid). On a server running Debian Lenny with
cups 1.3.8-1lenny4, the same A3 files get scaled to A4 and printed on A4 paper,
while the rotation seems correct for landscape and portrait.

[Bug 311614] Re: Document dimensions are not true at 100% zoom

2008-12-27 Thread Stefano Maggiolo
Okay. Now I've changed X DPI settings to 114; nothing changed in the
Gnome desktop (I think because all nice Gnome libraries use the 114 DPI
from Gnome configuration), nothing changed in screenruler (which already
gave the right dimensions) and now also evince and xdpyinfo give true
dimensions. I'm happy.

So it seems that at least in my case evince look to X DPI settings and not to
Gnome's. Just to be sure, these are my versions (Intrepid defaults):
evince 2.24.1-0ubuntu1
libpoppler-glib30.8.7-1
libpoppler3 0.8.7-1

Thanks!

[Bug 310575] Re: A3 pdf file is cropped and printed on A4 paper

2008-12-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
For me your attached files print correctly if

1. You have installed the latest CUPS package (1.3.9-2ubuntu6). Note
that 2ubuntu5 is broken. Do not use it.

2. Either the default paper size for your print queue is set to A3 or
you select A3 paper size when sending the job.

The following test command lines gave always correct results for me
(display the PostScript file /tmp/printout after each lpr call):

cupsctl LogLevel=debug
cupsctl FileDevice=yes
lpadmin -p a -E -v /tmp/printout -P
/usr/share/ppd/openprinting/HP/HP_LaserJet_5200.ppd.gz -o PageSize=A3
lpr -P a A3landscape.pdf
lpr -P a A3portrait.pdf
lpadmin -p a -o PageSize=A4
lpr -P a -o PageSize=A3 A3landscape.pdf
lpr -P a -o PageSize=A3 A3portrait.pdf

If you print out of evince (Document Viewer) you MUST choose the
correct paper size (A3 here) under Print Setup before printing. Note
also that evince does not remember the paper size which you have
selected for your last printout. The problem is evince here, due to not
very user-friendly handling of the page size.

[Bug 85356] Re: Output Format dropdown not selecting entry correctly

2008-12-27 Thread JazzyNico
Hi,

Same behaviour with 8.10. But you don't need to create a new profile.

Here's how to reproduce it:
. untick all active? ticks, exept the one you need to use (let's say MP3),
assuming it's not already selected.
. select the only active profile.
. try to extract, and the profile used is the previously selected one (for me
OGG) instead of the currently selected.

Workaround:
. make sure you selected the profile before untiking the others previous
default.

[Bug 41335] Re: DVD playing is not working correctly with totem-gstreamer

2008-12-27 Thread Milan
Michael: I definitely agree with a. But precisely because there's work
to get out of this mess, I'd like to separate issues so that we can sort
out the ones which correspond to Intrepid, where the DVD playback system
is completely different in Totem.

If you want informations about that, see bug 260765, and
http://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/wiki/DvdPlayback. The new GStreamer
plugin is called resindvd and has been blogged about this summer. It's
not considered as stable for now, and only included in gsteeamer-
plugins-bad (itoften breaks DVD playback when used).

Toni: It could be nice to browse all duplicates here, but it can be a real
pain. I'd rather wait for new bugs to be reported in Intrepid and Jaunty, since
it's only there that we'll be able to improve resindvd. I don't expect upstream
developers to work much on issues present in the old plugin. Still,
totem-specific issues may still be present when using resindvd, so it may be
good to find them...

[Bug 311741] [NEW] Gnome Terminal has transparent borders with Metacity composition enabled

2008-12-27 Thread terzag
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Using Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex.

When setting the compositing manager of Metacity (through Gconf :
apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager), the border of the Gnome
terminal window has transparent parts. It happens only with some
Metacity themes and seems to happen only with the terminal window (with
other windows, the parts are opaque).

Also, the Gnome composition options that make the title windows semi-
transparent are disabled (they're supposed to be opaque).

You can see an example with a few selected themes there :
http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=transparentcv0.jpg (don't pay
attention to the broken icons at the bottom, the picture is a montage.)

[Bug 285815] Re: Backlight keeps getting darker on MacBookPro

2008-12-27 Thread Alex Murray
I am seeing this same bug on my MacBook Pro 5,1 with Ubuntu 8.10 using
the mactel-support ppa with all relevant packages from the PPA installed
and kernel modules loaded. This includes the updated package of gnome-
power-manager from the PPA, and the only way to fix the problem is to
disable the 'Use ambient light to adjust LCD brightness' option in
g-p-m. Perhaps the light sensor reading is not correct? I am familiar
with linux kernel development and debugging (just not on the MacBook Pro
- this is my first) am just not too sure where to start debugging this
one - any ideas?

[Bug 296585] Re: Archive Mounter action should open mounted folder

2008-12-27 Thread Lonnie
Because nautilus/file-roller takes forever to view, then extract a 67gig
tar file. I decided to mount that tar file using Archive Mounter, and
then copy the archives contents to the desired destination.

However, as this report mentiones, when I right-clicked on the tar file
and then selected Open with Archive Mounter, nothing appeared to
happen. At bare minimum, I'd at least expect a notification window to
inform me that my tar file has been mounted to the file system, and
provide me some lead way as to where I could start navigating the
archive's file system. But Ideally, the nautilus window should go
directly to that mounted tar displaying its root directory's contents.

The is a usability bug for sure; it is very non-intuitive to not
indicate an output for an action, and furthermore, not to automate the
obvious next step (of opening that mounted archive you've just mounted).

[Bug 311775] Re: rhythmbox crashed downloading podcast

2008-12-27 Thread goto

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. If you are really unable to send this report with apport,
then please reopen this bug and explain what does not work. Thanks in
advance for your cooperation and understanding.

[Bug 311810] [NEW] signed mail sent with private key are shown as mail with valid signature but sender not verifiable

[Bug 311822] [NEW] cannot create link to remote ssh directory on desktop

2008-12-27 Thread Francesco Potortì
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Before upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10 I used to have an icon on my desktop
which linked to ssh://u...@my.host.name/mydir.

Now, I have two problems (I do not know if they are interconnected):

1) to get to the same dir, the URL is now
ssh://u...@my.host.name/home/user/mydir rather than the above
2) even after changing the URL, and creating a new link on the desktop, the
link does not persist through a logout/login cycle: after a logout/login, the
icon on the desktop changes its shape to a diamond and double-clicking on it
generates an error which invites to dispose of the icon in the desktop.

[Bug 311824] [NEW] Yelp doesn't search/show all available documentation

2008-12-27 Thread jhansonxi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

When telling beginners to RTFM the most obvious and direct access is the
Ubuntu Help Center but currently it doesn't cover a lot of available
documentation included with packages. For example, London Law
(londonlaw) doesn't show up at all in the search results as it doesn't
have a man page (obviously a separate bug). It does have a manual in
/usr/share/doc/londonlaw but this file doesn't show up in the search
results so the user won't know it exists. Yelp 2.24.0 on Intrepid

[Bug 311614] Re: If DPI in X != DPI in Gnome, document dimensions are not true at 100% zoom

2008-12-27 Thread Dimitrios Symeonidis
Marking as triaged. Should we forward this upstream, or is it a won't
fix?

** Summary changed:

- Document dimensions are not true at 100% zoom
+ If DPI in X != DPI in Gnome, document dimensions are not true at 100% zoom

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: evince

From File-property you can get the dimensions of a PDF you're viewing.
At 100% zoom level, the document is about 20% smaller (in each dimension)
than it should be.
For comparison, screenruler shows the right dimensions, so it should be
possible taking screenruler's detection algorithm which seems to work better.
+
+ [Update]
+ The cause is a discrepancy between the DPI value in Gnome and in X: All other
programs read the Gnome value, while Evince reads from X.

[Bug 99276] Re: User and Groups does not inform user that manual UID already exists and create user groups.

2008-12-27 Thread AmenophisIII
i have the same problem... although i did not change the uid or anything else.
just the password fields.
the group of the new user gets added:
grep test /etc/group
test:x:1005:
testu:x:1006:
(i tried two times... thought maybe test is a reserved word the first time)
but no user in passwd and no home dir.
i did add users on the console before, maybe that complicated things?
no matter what went wrong.. its just a WTF NONO!!! to not do any error
handling, im really pissed.

[Bug 303466] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in g_type_check_instance_cast()

2008-12-27 Thread Geoff123
Same problem here.

error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.1800.2[b70c6000+3c000]

I assume the problem is related to the autorun/mounting or nautilus
programs after pluging in the ipod.

A procedure I can use that stops the crashing is to disable any use of the ipod
before rhythmbox by doing this:
Change nautilus preferences like attached screenshot.

I get the crash on Eject if:
-mounting and browsing nautilus or
-starting rhythmbox from the button within nautilus when browsing

[Bug 311860] [NEW] Auto-hibernate due to inactivity results in a resumed session with hanged gnome-power-manager preventing the system from going into hibernate again

4) I am able to manually hibernate the system from the GNOME menu and
