Thank you for your suggestion. However, the changes you are requesting aren't really a bug and require more discussion, which should be done on an appropriate mailing list or forum. http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists might be a good start for determining which mailing list to use. There are a couple additional comments I would like add: * The program isn't technically executing as the result of a +x flag or anything like that, nautilus is actually calling a helper application and running it that way. * naitilus can be set to open the file rather then run it if you go into the configuration, I believe the out of the box behaviour that they want is to have the file run. * Java is generally pretty safe (although I am sure someone will post something to prove otherwise). Even if a malicious file was run the hopes are that the user isn't running the file as root (he/she would have to enter a password regardless) so the whole system would be affected... I am wishlisting this issue as it is a valid one and I can see the reasoning from both sides. ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist Status: New = Triaged -- Opening a Java Archive (.JAR) file executes it regardless of the executable permission bit https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313439 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 312448] [NEW] Modal dialog can be covered by another dialog
You have been subscribed to a public bug: The handling of dialogs on the desktop is rather unusable in Hardy Heron with latest updates applied. This make Ubuntu rather poor for the naive user! For example: Create an ASCII text file on the desktop (test.txt). Make it executable. Double click on it. A dialog appears saying Do you want to run test.txt, or display its contents?. My naive user doesn't know what to do, and while he is still wondering, a second dialog appears, saying Opening test.txt: You can stop this operation by clicking cancel. This dialog appears ON TOP of the first. Unfortunately, clicking cancel in this dialog does NOT work. You have to somehow go back to the first dialog, which is now partially or totally hidden, and select an action from there. Please, please try to fix such issues. I am trying to set up an ex- Windows user with Ubuntu instead, and I feel really embarassed that it is not as easy to use as it should be... If you don't want to learn how to create a debdiff that's fine; it also helps to just attach a patch from upstream. [Bug 310854] Re: Printing Photos with Canon original drivers stopped working in Intrepid
Maybe there are two problems at the same time. One in CUPS that prevents the Canon converter from working properly and another one that prevents the GTK applications from printing properly. I guess it is caused by sloppy shell scripting in xinit and the such. Check the following comment in Bug #48876 Matthew Wang wrote on 2006-08-05: (permalink) -- quote -- I encountered this problem in 6.06 today. If you have set 'ls' as an alias with argument '--color' in /etc/profile or $HOME/profile, it will be triggered. The root cause is that, the script /etc/gdm/Xsession will source /etc/profile and $HOME/.profile, then it use ls $1 to read /etc/X11/Xsession.d, the ANSI color control characters in its output will cause the problem. Here's the fix: modify /etc/gdm/Xsession, change line 82 for F in $(ls $1); do to for F in $(/bin/ls $1); do -- quote -- -- export and alias lines in /etc/profile lead to unstartable GNOME session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/235040 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee (via bug 48876). -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Has anyone experienced this bug who is not running Compiz? I don't believe this is a gtk issue at all. It seems as if Compiz is somehow ignoring the window resize that normally occurs. I still think this behaviour is broken, but that is a totally separate issue. Don't blame the gtk guys for this, or expect a solution, unless you can reproduce it without Compiz running. [Bug 75324] Re: Gnome file chooser/selector is way to small
The GtkFileChooserDialog is resizing itself after being shown. This is the root problem, which causes positioning issues even when the dialog is not too small. This is a GTK bug, there are several rough patches proposed upstream, and the commit that introduced the problem is identified. Now, Compiz may raise problems by refusing to resize the dialog immediately after it's been shown - this may be a nice behavior to avoid window instability, or it may sheerly be a bug. I don't understand what do you mean about Jaunty and a Compiz update. This will surely get into Intrepid if a nice patch is provided, and yes, a debdiff will help. The fix in Compiz won't come since the bug we reported to them was about another issue and was already released in Hardy. -- Gnome file chooser/selector is way to small https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/75324 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 75324] Re: Gnome file chooser/selector is way to small
So you are saying that Metacity simply ignores this bug that gtk is producing? It seems like two separate issues to me. One issue is that gtk is resizing the dialogue in the first place. That's not what this particular report is about, but solving it would probably hide this bug. This bug is about the 2nd issue, that compiz is not *always* following this resize directive. Like you said, maybe it is to avoid window instability or some such, but it's still incorrect. So, in my opinion both issues need to be solved, and it seems like they should be tracked separately. If the gtk issue is solved before the compiz issue, then the compiz issue may continue on unsolved, only to resurface at some later time. I would not expect an issue like this will warrant an update in Intrepid, so we would just have to wait for it to be merged upstream so as to appear in the next release. There seems to be some other factor at work here, because a great number of people are not experiencing this bug, otherwise it would indeed be a higher priority. Could it be screen resolution/DPI? I'm also running 1920x1200 like Christian, at 150 dpi. Perhaps the 2nd resize values is being calculated based on the font size + DPI? I will see if I can reproduce this with a new account at the unfortunate standard of 96 dpi. -- Gnome file chooser/selector is way to small https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/75324 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Yep, i agree too. This 'feature' is very very annoying in both: 1.touchpad mode it's almost guaranteed to face this problem every time you use touchpad. 2.mouse mode sometimes pointer is not on application window and you scroll to another desktop. Happens at least once in a day. (4-8 hours of work). So at least 'disable' option is mandatory. Also, didn't find any request for automatic touchpad disabling when writing or when USB mouse is connected. Re: [Bug 205018] Re: Hardy - Doesn't detect Firefox 3.0 for web searches and bookmarks
Well, History and Bookmarks have been joined together in Firefox 3 - the only difference between a history item and a bookmark seems to be an extra flag on the bookmark. Splitting this functionality would create code duplication. Also, implementing searches engines will probably be very similar as well. Since we copy the sqlite database over (the copy in use by firefox is always locked), splitting into multiple modules means additional overhead as well. [Bug 292840] Re: brightness keeps getting decreased while non-idle
This affects me too (8.10, thinkpad x60) and has been a pain for a long time now (certainly was present in Hardy, can't remember back to Gutsy). Experimentation shows two distinct problems. a) on battery power - reduce backlight brightness When selected this sets the normal brightness to 50% but doesn't actually stop the user from pumping it back to 100%. Occasionally I presume the power management daemon notices (to force this close and reopen the power console) and sets it back in a most frustrating way. If (and I think we should) we allow users to boost the brightness above the cap then this reset should be done during a video power event (screen off, idle etc) and not simply enforced every time something is randomly polled. ref #136693 for related fixes done in the area of auto/manual brightness that may not have been fully thought through. b) idle detection clearly isn't working (as described by the OP). Right now (on AC and clearly not idle) I can choose dim display when idle and it _immediately_ sets the display to 25%. Again, I can boost the brightness but it will notice and reset it. -- brightness keeps getting decreased while non-idle https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/292840 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 195483] Re: Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change
Things are actually worse than they seem. As a matter of fact, LAME should only be invoked with a handful of simple master options (like -V4), each of which activates myriads of internal encoder parameters. Manually setting those parameters through advanced switches will disrupt the carefully tuned balance between the different encoder parameters, and result in substandard MP3 files. See the LAME man pages and also http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=LAME Now, the problem is, the gstreamer LAME plugin implements an large number of these advanced switches, and sets them all to a default value, thereby completely overriding LAME's normal mode of operation. A list of these options can be obtained by typing: gst-inspect-0.10 lame The developers of gst-plugins-ugly are even aware of this, judging by the gstlame.c source code, which is ridden with comments like this: /* FIXME 0.11: Remove all properties except the useful ones. Nobody knows what most * properties are doing and they're intended for LAME developers only. */ As a demonstration, I tried to find a combination of gstreamer lame settings that reproduce the behavior of invoking standalone LAME. After half a day of trying, I gave up. Conclusion: gstlame.c is broken. If you want to rip CDs to mp3 format on UBUNTU, use rubyripper instead of juicer http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Rubyripper#Installation_on_Ubuntu_8.04 For the die-hards that absolutely insist on using the gstreamer LAME plugin, please be aware that the workarounds in earlier posts in this thread are flawed. Most importantly, by setting vbr-max-bitrate=256 to values lower than 320, they disregard the following recommendation from the LAME man page: The use of -B is NOT RECOMMENDED. A 128 kbps CBR bitstream, because of the bit reservoir, can actually have frames which use as many bits as a 320 kbps frame. VBR modes minimize the use of the bit reservoir, and thus need to allow 320 kbps frames to get the same flexibility as CBR streams. The best combinations of flags I could come up with in my abovementioned experiment were: If your most important goal is to minimize the risk of audible MP3 artefacts: lame name=enc mode=0 vbr=4 vbr-min-bitrate=32 vbr-max-bitrate=320 vbr-quality=0 A good trade-off between file size and quality: lame name=enc mode=1 vbr=4 vbr-min-bitrate=32 vbr-max-bitrate=320 vbr-quality=4 Note that I don't really recommend using these settings, as they don't do LAME any justice. Again, if you are serious about your mp3s, go with rubyripper or wait for the issues to be fixed in gstreamer 0.11 -- Sound Juicer - MP3 quality doesn't change https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195483 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

If you open its properties, you can see it has read and write permissions for the user, but read only permissions for the group. Setting it to read and write makes the emblem disappear. It happens in Intrepid and Jaunty. ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- restored files have read only permissions https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/313584 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
