[Bug 187848] Re: volume control/mixer interface unusable

2009-02-03 Thread era
Adding insult to injury, the big friendly Help button in the lower left
corner of gnome-volume-control brings up a friendly "Unable to load
page" -- "The requested URI "ghelp:///gnome-volume-control" is invalid"
error message. This will apparently be fixed in Jaunty (LP bug
#259945).

[Bug 187848] Re: volume control/mixer interface unusable

2009-02-03 Thread era
Isn't the applet you are referring to called gnome-volume-control (as of
Intrepid, in package gnome-media)? That's the applet I get when I
right-click on the speaker in the top menu bar and select "open volume
control" from the menu.

Here's a screenshot of gnome-alsamixer:
http://dollarunderscore.wordpress.com/2007/05/29/gnome-alsa-mixer/ --
it's fairly similar, but not identical to gnome-volume-control.

I concur that this is a serious usability problem which should
definitely be fixed.

[Bug 31063] Re: Asus A6U, two hotkeys not working

2009-02-03 Thread Steve Langasek
The 'disable touchpad' key currently doesn't work with acpi-support
because it relies on the obsolete synclient command. The right command
to toggle touchpads in 8.10 and above is xinput:

$ xinput set-int-prop  'Device Enabled' 8 [0|1]

hal needs to be fixed to relay this event, and gnome-settings-daemon
needs to be updated to handle it.

Connor,

gnome-utils is not involved in the volume capplet, so I would change the

The change seems to appeared during 2th of February, GMT

Re: [Bug 306310] Re: Resume (from memory) goes back to sleep automatically

2009-02-03 Thread Martin Pool
As of today's Jaunty updates, I'm getting one additional suspend
cycle, and after coming back from suspend I experienced this behaviour
which I'm assuming is related:

After pressing Fn a second time to wake up, I got the gnome screen
lock dialog. I tried to type into it but I didn't see anything when I
pressed keys. Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to a text console didn't work.
However, the mouse did still respond, and I could click Cancel to
remove the dialog. When I clicked the mouse, it came back, and I still
couldn't type.

I then pressed Switch user, and got a login screen which _did_ respond
to keyboard input. I typed in my username and password, and it
returned me to my original desktop. However, the keyboard is still
not working in any application.

By sshing in I can see there is a traceback (not an oops?) in the
kernel log, see attached.

[Bug 325181] [NEW] evince wont print to my lpd:// printer.

2009-02-03 Thread pgmer6809
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I have a network attached Lexmark Optra R+ printer. I have configured this
using CUPS as the default printer.
Other apps eg Firefox, gedit, openoffice etc. can print to this printer fine.
Test pages work OK.
When I try to print a PDF from Evince, the printer starts up, but nothing ever
comes out and no jobs show up in the printer status monitor applet.

However using acroread to view and print the PDF works fine. This is the
same for all PDF's I have tried.

I don't know what error codes (if any) evince gives; there is no
evidence of a crash; evince continues to run, but there is no output.

[Bug 325163] [NEW] clock applet can't set timezone for new location

2009-02-03 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This is the same as https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/271144, but that bug
has been converted into a question, and I feel that the the clock
applet's error handling behaviour should be improved so anyone can
easily identify and correct the problem, so I think it's a bug.

To reproduce it:

1. Configure multiple locations in the clock applet with different timezones.
2. Click on the clock applet.
3. Move the pointer to a location with a timezone that is different from your
currently set timezone.
4. Click on the set button that appears.

The error message I get is the rather incomprehensible message "Failed
to set the system timezone: Launch helper exited with unknown return
code 1".

After reading bug #271144, I checked auth.log:

dbus-daemon: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call",
sender=":1.42" (uid=1000 pid=4857 comm="gnome-panel ")
interface="org.gnome.ClockApplet.Mechanism" member="SetTimezone" error
name="(unset)" requested_reply=0
destination="org.gnome.ClockApplet.Mechanism" (uid=0 pid=1939
comm="/usr/lib/gnome-panel/gnome-clock-applet-mechanism "))

I don't know what has removed permissions for the clock (I haven't
adjusted any permissions since installing Jaunty) to change the
timezone.

The behaviour I would hope for is:

a) The clock applet informs you that it does not have permission to
change the timezone.

b) It opens the authorizations dialog to the correct location so you can
authorize the change.

c) If you authorize the change, it changes the timezone as requested.

Even if the clock applet were not to do steps b) and c), it should at
the very least tell you how to fix the problem.

apparently plugging in an old ps2 keyboard and pressing numlock key will

In that case does setting "When the suspend button is pressed" to
"Suspend" make it lock screen? By the way, the screen locking is done
before the suspend/hibernate process and not after.

For debugging instructions, do the same as in this post and attach the
resulting file:

Also, may I see the script you're using in /etc/pm/sleep.d?

[Bug 325150] [NEW] When down button on keyboard is pressed, music stops playing

2009-02-03 Thread Panarchy
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Hi

I have a Dell Inspiron 700m, and when I am pressing the down button on
my keyboard whilst I'm browsing a website on Firefox, Rhythmbox stalls.
That is, it pauses the song, until I stop pressing down the down button.

Please fix this bug.

Thanks in advance,

Panarchy

Re: [Bug 312078] Re: I insert a DVD which contains several pdfs, but the the File browser cannot display the contents of the DVD.

2009-02-03 Thread jfrr
Thanks for your answer,
The screen captures are clear. They shows my computer (with Linux Ubuntu
8.10).

In "Linux-OpenSolaris.png" you can see 3 windows, cdrom0 (Linux Nautilus),
os64-01 (where OpenSolaris is running in a virtual machine created with
VirtualBox) and the background window with Linux System Monitor. In the
cdrom0 window you can see the error, because Linux Nautilus cannot display
the DVD contents. But in the os64-01 window you can see OpenSolaris Nautilus
showing the DVD contents, you can see the folder named "Libros".

In "Linux-OpenSolaris2.png" you can see the Linux terminal message when I
try to show the DVD contents: "bash : cd: /media/cdrom0: Permission denied"

In "Linux-OpenSolaris3.png" you can see the contents of the "Libros" folder
in OpenSolaris Nautilus.

Is clear now?

Best regards.

[Bug 273142] Re: screensaver won't release with mouse movement

2009-02-03 Thread rhavenn
Same problem. Although, I've also noticed that mouse movement alone will
not keep the screen saver from activating either. That is, if I don't
touch the keyboard for 20 minutes (my screen saver timeout) and just
click around surfing or whatever the screen saver will still come on. If
I hit the space bar it will turn off right away.

xubuntu 8.10 fully patched - 2.6.27-11-generic
nvidia vid card using repo drivers
dual-monitors set in a independent dual screen setup, not Twinview though.

[Bug 324807] Re: Jaunty: Ubutnu now has both gnome volume and pulse sound on the panel

2009-02-03 Thread Connor Imes
I can confirm this behavior on the latest Jaunty updates (Feb 3, 2009). I
wonder if this is related to the poor sound quality I experienced with the
login sound after I logged back in.
The two applets that appear seem to be gnome-volume-control-applet (source:
gnome-media) and mixer_applet2 (source: gnome-applets). I would guess that the
problem originates in gnome-utils which was upgraded today, so I will file this
bug under that package.

[Bug 223060] Re: doesn't send some keys to the remote computer

2009-02-03 Thread Thomas M. Hinkle
I'm having odd behavior with 2.24.2. I've tried setting the gconf pref
both ways and it appears to have no effect -- the menu keys and the
shortcuts all get swallowed by vinagre and not passed on.

However, if I work in full screen mode, my problems are solved --
vinagre doesn't intercept a thing (in fact, I can only get out of full
screen mode by using the mouse, since F11 is passed onto the host and
not swallowed by vinagre for toggling fullscreen).

Is this the design? If so, it's something people reporting this bug
would benefit from knowing -- I know it saved me quite a bit of head-
banging-on-desk when I discovered it (previously, I'd closed several
sessions trying M-W in emacs on a remote host...).

[Bug 325086] [NEW] Mixer applet doesn't respect the setting for which channels to control

2009-02-03 Thread Bojan Rajkovic
Public bug reported:

In my just-installed Jaunty (all packages up to date as per apt-get),
the new volume control applet doesn't respect the setting for which
channels it should control--I have a master and LFE, and I'd like it to
control both of them with the multimedia keys, but only master's volume
changes when I use the multimedia keys (observed behavior via
alsamixer).

Expected behavior:
Master and LFE change if both are selected in the Preferences dialog that is
selectable from a right mouse click on the volume applet's tray icon.

Actual behavior:
Only master changes, even after selecting LFE.

[Bug 325058] Re: Connect to server dialog (webdav) gives HTTP error

2009-02-03 Thread Andreas Olsson
I can confirm this.

What's happening when you are connecting to webdav share using "Connect
to server" dialog is that the path /folder is sent to the server. This
is no matter if you specify /folder or /folder/.

When your server is getting the /folder (without trailing slash) it
sends a http 301 respons, pointing towards /folder/ (adding the trailing
slash). This doesn't seem to be catched and handled properly.

  Power Manager 2.24.0
  -
  Hardware: IBM ThinkPad R40
  -
I am using two batteries with the laptop - one internal and one additional
that plugs into CD-ROM bay.
While running on battery power the additional battery discharges first (it's
OK) but when it reaches critical low level the power manager hibernates the
computer (correct action on low battery, also ok) instead of switching to the
second battery (here is the problem, very annoying).

Also the time remaining is mostly correct while running on one battery
(any one) but totally wrong when two of them installed. i.e. while
running on the additional battery the time remaining indicator shows
correct time for one battery but not overall time remaining. If the
second battery removed time for the internal battery shown correctly,
but if the second battery installed the remaining time shows some value
  that represents absolutely nothing.

another issue, that if second battery installed before the main while
running on AC adapter the additional battery is not recognized with
power manager and therefore not charged.

Re: [Bug 324226] Re: cant copy to new ipod

2009-02-03 Thread Chris Schulz
ill try and be more clear...

if you have a *completely new* ipod shuffle... rhythymbox will not copy
files to it.

once i synced it with songbird it became "initialized" and i was able to add
songs to it...

the second problem is that once the songs are loaded the ipod does not
recognise or play them! you have to either run the python script to re-ord
the database or create a playlist on the device and copy all the files to
it.

these problems still exist and should not be closed.

[Bug 325070] [NEW] 2-nd battary issues while batery powered

2009-02-03 Thread Navado
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10
-
Power Manager 2.24.0
-
Hardware: IBM ThinkPad R40
-
I am using two batteries with the laptop - one internal and one additional that
plugs into CD-ROM bay.

[Bug 325058] [NEW] Connect to server dialog (webdav) gives HTTP error

2009-02-03 Thread Sebastian Schauenburg
Public bug reported:

Description: Connect to a password protected webdav (http) repository,
using the 'connect to server' dialog gives the following error: "Error:
HTTP Error: Moved Permanently Please select another viewer and try
again."

It should work, since Firefox and cadaver both work fine. If you use the
"dav://servername.com/folder" link, you will be asked for a username and
a password and it works fine.

[Bug 325053] [NEW] gedit closed abruptly and would not start again

2009-02-03 Thread andrea-abelli

No way to restart it:
trying to execute it from the CL did not work, it just wouldn't launch, and the

[Bug 261084] Re: Suspends again right after resume

2009-02-03 Thread binary.koala
confirm the bug on Thinkpad x200 and x61s, both machines behave the same way on
intrepid 8.10 (all latest).
when i press Fn+F4 suspend happens, but on the next resume machine suspends
again.

INTERESTING - if Transmission (bittorrent) is running g-p-m shows two messages
about "policy preventing suspend"
LOOKS like acpid and g-p-m are both catching the same events.
HOWEVER, I was digging into the problem, and here are my findings:

1. running acpid in debug shows only one ACPI event and only one run of
/etc/acpi/sleepbtn.sh
---
acpid: received event "ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 1004"
acpid: rule from 5589[0:0] matched
acpid: notifying client 5589[0:0]
acpid: rule from 5509[111:123] matched
acpid: notifying client 5509[111:123]
acpid: rule from /etc/acpi/events/ibm-sleepbtn matched
acpid: executing action "/etc/acpi/sleepbtn.sh"
BEGIN HANDLER MESSAGES
END HANDLER MESSAGES
---

2. g-p-m in verbose mode shows _twice_ "Button press event type=sleep"
---
TI:22:30:55 TH:0x91ad640FI:gpm-button.c FN:hal_device_condition_cb,430
 - condition=ButtonPressed, details=sleep

 - Button press event type=sleep
TI:22:31:11 TH:0x91ad640FI:gpm-button.c
FN:gpm_button_filter_x_events,122

3. when acpid triggers sleepbtn.sh it sends 'acpi_fakekey $KEY_SLEEP' . in my
system $KEY_SLEEP has code 142
and if i do manually 'sudo acpi_fakekey 142' my system suspends and resumes
correctly.

4. if i stop acpid with 'sudo /etc/init.d/acpid stop' and then suspend
it also works correctly.

THE QUESTION IS why g-p-m works correctly without acpid ? If that is
intended why both are running doubling like this the events?

My fix for now is just to comment out "acpi_fakekey $KEY_SLEEP" in
/etc/acpi/sleepbtn.sh:
---
test -f /usr/share/acpi-support/key-constants || exit 0

. /usr/share/acpi-support/key-constants
# acpi_fakekey $KEY_SLEEP
---

The easiest way I know is running "ps aux|grep compiz.real" and check if
compiz.real is running.

Anyway I've tried to reproduce this issue with both compiz active and
without it and I can confirm that the window switcher doesn't appear.

For this reason I'm going to mark this report as confirmed, changing the
title because this is a wishlist bug and moving in to gnome-panel
package but I'm not sure that this is the best place for this report,
though!

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

[Bug 324836] [NEW] Alt-Tab window switcher fails with Main Menu open

2009-02-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When the main Gnome menu is open (the equivalent to the 'Start Menu' in
Windows), the Alt-Tab shortcut window switcher fails to work. I don't
know if this is by design but there seems no good reason for this to be
the case, and it has hit me a few times - usually when looking for an
item in the menu, and Alt-Tabbing back to a webpage to double-check
something.

Using Intrepid on an Asus eeePC.

[Bug 324321] Re: [Intrepid]: screen not locked after resume

2009-02-03 Thread Gerd Bavendiek
hyperair,

thanks for responding.

As you suggested, I tried using a "fresh" user - but nothing changed.

I than found bug #42052, a very old bug, which seems to be still alive
in Intrepid - at least for xfce-users.

Citing from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/42052

Jarno Suni wrote on 2008-12-16:

In Xfce4:
Additionally choose Power Management in Screensaver preferences and choose a
way to suspend/hibernate.
You can not use the "Ask me" option in Power Management preferences like above
(or you can, but it doesn't lock screen when you resume). Then use that way to
suspend/hibernate. In summary: whenever you suspend/hibernate using the Quit
dialog, screen will not be locked.

So from my point of view this is true.

So for the time being adding a script to /etc/pm/sleep.d is at least a solution
for a real problem. It works for me
and my data is safe now.

If you give me further hints how to debug I'd really like to help to
find the root cause though !

Thanks

Gerd

In GNOME, gnome-power-manager takes care of locking the screen using
gnome-screenshot before calling pm-utils. If I'm not mistaken, it's the
same in the case of XFCE. Perhaps it's a misconfiguration on your part?
Please try with a clean home directory (perhaps temporarily create a new
user), and see if it works.

Either way, since pm-utils isn't what takes care of locking the screen,
I'm marking the pm-utils bug as invalid.

[Bug 324859] Re: I can configure extra keys on my Sony laptop for launching applications, but when I press them nothing happens

2009-02-03 Thread Martin Pitt
First round of debugging on Till's computer: This works in the guest
session, but not in his account. Also, gnome-settings-daemon --no-daemon
--debug doesn't tell anything about handling key shortcuts (even if it
works).

Needs gdb debug session.

seperate bug report if it's not already reported in launchpad.
