[Bug 49340] Re: Forgets "Fit Page Width" option on each click on the index

2009-04-15 Thread JP Vossen
Oh, I forgot, "best fit" should be renamed "Whole Page" or something, as
"best fit" is not a good description.

And I just re-read the section from comment 10 above. Arggg. I see the
point about the spec, but I don't care what the PDF author thought, I
want it to display the way I want it to (so I can read it on a Netbook),
and I want it to stay that way when I set it.

FYI, I just tried epdfview and it does not exhibit this behavior, so
I'll just use that instead...

[Bug 49340] Re: Forgets "Fit Page Width" option on each click on the index

2009-04-15 Thread JP Vossen
Evince 2.26.0-0ubuntu1 in Jaunty beta LPIA has a regression to this bug.
And boy is it annoying. But it's tricky too, it doesn't always happen.

Problems:
1) Evince defaults to "best fit" which is always annoying but even worse on a
Netbook screen.
2) When navigating the document using the sidebar, it reverts to "best fit"
even if previously changed to "Fix page width"
2.1) It doesn't even remember sections you've already set, Fix it for chapter
foo, navigate to chapter bar and it goes to "best fit", navigate back to foo
and it stays at "best fit."
3) But it only happens with some documents.
4) View, Continuous/Dual are mutually exclusive options and thus should be
displayed as radio buttons, but are instead incorrectly displayed as checkboxes.
4.1) So are View Best Fix/Fit Page Width.
5) Evince should have a "Preferences" page where you can set the default.

Steps to reproduce #1-3:

1) Download
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xlob/dtg/en/en_dtg.zip and unzip
it.
2) Open in Evince, it works as expected.

3) Download http://launchpadlibrarian.net/8215270/Sample_report.pdf from bug
121773
4) It's broken as described above.

Steps to reproduce #4, 5: look in the GUI and try setting the options. :-)

[Bug 355018] Re: metacity keybindings for global commands don't work in compiz

2009-04-15 Thread aliencam
I can confirm that the commands plugin fixes this. kind of
disappointing that it wouldn't be installed by default if the update
somehow removes the capacity for metacity keybindings.

Strange though that it was able to import or recognize the shortcut keys
that I already put it into the gconf-editor. I wonder if there is
another setting that will re-enable the shortcut keys in gconf-editor
instead?

[Bug 362119] Re: What if exit a file/dir named "-*"

2009-04-15 Thread Michael B. Trausch
Oh, you can also prefix such strange file names with "./" to work with
them, e.g.:

$ ls -la
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:37 ./
drwxr-xr-x 85 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:37 ../
$ touch ./--
$ ls -la
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 mbt mbt0 2009-04-16 00:37 --
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:37 ./
drwxr-xr-x 85 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:37 ../
$

Still, don't do it. This behavior is due to system architecture and
very strange things can happen if you use filenames like these.

[Bug 362119] Re: What if exit a file/dir named "-*"

2009-04-15 Thread Michael B. Trausch
To create a file named "--" you would need the command:

touch -- --

However, do keep in mind that files like this would be really hard to
work with. For example:

$ ls -la
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:31 ./
drwxr-xr-x 85 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:31 ../
$ touch -- --
$ ls -la
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 mbt mbt0 2009-04-16 00:31 --
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:31 ./
drwxr-xr-x 85 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:31 ../
$ ls -la *
total 8
-rw-r--r-- 1 mbt mbt0 2009-04-16 00:31 --
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:31 ./
drwxr-xr-x 85 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:32 ../
$ rm *
zsh: sure you want to delete all the files in /home/mbt/ex [yn]? y
rm: missing operand
Try `rm --help' for more information.
$ rm -- --

Also, trying to open a file like this? Using "cat --" won't work; but
"cat -- --" will.

Commands that do _not_ use "--" as an end-of-args symbol will also make
it very hard to work with such files. This is due to the way UNIX works
generally.

Now, think about what would happen by the way if you have a file named
"-rf". And let's say you typed "rm *" in that directory, and that
directory contained other directories:

$ touch -- -rf
$ for i in $(seq 1 10); do mkdir $i; done
$ ls -la
total 48
drwxr-xr-x 12 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 ./
drwxr-xr-x 85 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 ../
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 1/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 10/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 2/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 3/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 4/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 5/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 6/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 7/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 8/
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 9/
-rw-r--r-- 1 mbt mbt0 2009-04-16 00:35 -rf
$ rm *
zsh: sure you want to delete all the files in /home/mbt/ex [yn]? y
$ ls -la
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 ./
drwxr-xr-x 85 mbt mbt 4096 2009-04-16 00:35 ../
-rw-r--r-- 1 mbt mbt0 2009-04-16 00:35 -rf
$

Oops.

Long story short: avoid file names that begin with dashes; almost
certainly there is a better naming scheme to use.

[Bug 316653] Re: nautilus deletes (samba share) file without prompt when a folder of the same name is created

2009-04-15 Thread Justin Lee
Currently I am using Intrepid and don't have spare disk space/machine to
install Jaunty. Does the test you mentioned have to be done in Jaunty?
If it could be done in Intrepid, I may have a chance to try it on.

I think nautilus should be ok in Jaunty according to the prior test you
have done.

[Bug 362119] [NEW] What if exit a file/dir named "-*"

2009-04-15 Thread Minqiang
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Here I found may be not a bug. But I think it is.
The bug appear like:
I want to create a file named "--", so I use the command:
$ touch --
or
$ touch \-\-
or
$ touch "--"
none of above can do that.
other cases:
when I want to operate a file/dir named "-*" use the commands(say, mv rm cat
), it always goes error.
I don't know if this is a bug. Maybe it is my mistake.

[Bug 362112] [NEW] Nautilus location bar buttons take us backwards in history, but not forwards

2009-04-15 Thread positivek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Using Nautilus in "browser mode":

1. Gnome Places --> Home Folder (for someuser). This brings up a new Nautilus
window. History menus: Back: . Fwd:
2. Open the Music directory. Back: someuser. Fwd:
3. Open a subdirectory of Music, e.g. Beach Boys. Back: Music, someuser. Fwd:

4. Click the Location Bar Button "someuser". Back: . Fwd: Music, Beach
Boys.
5. Click on Location Bar Button "Beach Boys". Back: someuser. Fwd:

BUG: It seems inconsistent and strange that clicking on the location bar
buttons that represent the directory path would take me backwards in the
history. It is then inconsistent and strange that clicking on the
buttons that are ahead of the current button do NOT take me forward in
the path.

That is, when I click them for directories that are parents, grand-
parents, etc. of the current/working directory, then I am actually
somehow/someway navigating in the navigation history stacks. But when I
click on a child, grand-child, etc. in the location bar buttons, then I
am actually starting a new path (clearing the fwd stack).

Perhaps this is by design, but if so, then I think the rules for these
buttons should be clearly stated in a design document. Each
step/behavior should be able to be conveyed (even if it is non-
deterministic) in the Gnome Nautilus Help.

( Bonus Question: What happens after step 5 when you click on "Music" in the
location bar buttons? )

[Bug 355939] Re: songs from folders with only three letters in upper case appear twice in playlist

2009-04-15 Thread Uwe Schilling
Yes, it is reproducible. Steps to take:

1. have a folder with music in your library, for example jbo

2. start rhythmbox

3. I cannot directly rename a folder if only case changes, so I rename
jbo to jbo2

4. rename jbo2 to JBO

5. now every song appears three times in the rhythmbox library, once
with the path jbo, once with the path jbo2, and once with the path JBO,
not beautiful, but not really a problem...

6. restart rhythmbox. Now the songs do not appear thrice anymore, since
the songs with the directory jbo2 are not in the playlist anymore, as it
was to be expected. However, every song from that directory still
appears twice in the playlist, once with directory jbo, and once with
directory JBO

[Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.

2009-04-15 Thread klatham
I'm not that much of a "guinea pig" as I first professed to be :) ...
just got all my systems up to LTS release of Hardy. Don't really want
to load a new version of the OS to test for this.

If I get time (which looks none too likely right now), I can load a VM
image of Jaunty and try. But as I said before, I have no idea what I
did to start this. It just refused to allow new images one day. I
suspect some incompatibility of a file format somewhere, maybe
.gconf/desktop/gnome/background/%gconf.xml itself (written to by
something newer or older than what is now trying to read/modify it).
Maybe I installed a desktop "fix" ... just not sure.

I will make some more detailed comparisons between the login which is
still working and the one which isn't. Maybe if I can reproduce it by
manhandling a certain file, that will trim down the suspect list a bit.
But if it was a bug introduced by changing a file format between sub-
releases ... well, it matters less and less as time goes by.

Ken

[Bug 362094] [NEW] Navigating "Up"/to "parent" preselects the child directory (in Nautilus)

2009-04-15 Thread positivek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In Nautilus, in "browser mode", I think:
1. Use the Gnome "Places" menu to open the user's Documents directory in
Nautilus.
2. Notice that (correctly) no files or directories in the Nautilus window. I
would not expect any to be selected, of course.
3. Navigate to the parent directory by either clicking the "Up" button or Menu:
Go-->Open Parent.
4. BUG: Notice that the selection set is not empty. It should be. The
"Documents" directory is preselected, even though, as far as I am concerned
(and as "up" convention in other OS's goes) this is a new navigation to this
parent directory.

Note that when opening a directory from within a Nautilus window, no
files or directories are ever preselected, as expected. It is this "up"
that does it for some (buggy) reason.

This bug is directly related to another one I posted, Bug #362091.

It seems that the selection code for Back and Up should be exchanged in
order for their behaviors to work as expected.

Thanks!

[Bug 362090] [NEW] cursor doesn't behave properly when hovering over toolbar

2009-04-15 Thread erusan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

1) Jaunty Beta (up-to-date April 15)
2) epiphany-browser 2.26.1-0ubuntu1
3) Mouse over toolbar buttons, see pointer
4) Cursor reacts by disappearing, appearing as a text selector, appearing as a
hand (as if resizing a window), etc

Though the cursor behaves properly (highlights and activates buttons),
it does not appear as it should. I have been unable to determine what
triggers this behavior, and how the false behavior is determined
(whether the cursos disappears, appears as a text selector, etc). This
does not affect other applications, and other Epiphany windows (newly-
opened--I usually have just one open so I'm not sure if it affects all
open windows when triggered) are not affected. Effect occurs when
hovering over toolbar (tabs, back, forward, etc) and menubar (File,
Tools), but not when hovering over location bar.

[Bug 362091] [NEW] Selection not remembered when navigating back/forward in browser mode

2009-04-15 Thread positivek
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

This is a very frustrating bug that remains in Gnome 2.24.1: Nautilus
2.24.1. I think this is a bug and not really a wishlist item.

Reproduce it:
1. Open home dir in Nautilus.
2. Select a subdirectory of home, say "my_dir".
3. Open that dir by hitting Enter or Ctrl+o.
4. Click Nautilus' "BACK" button.
5. BUG: Actual Behavior is that the selection is cleared. Expected behavior is
that the selection remain from the last time I viewed that directory.

Caveat and inconsistency:
1. Open home dir in Nautilus.
2. Select a subdirectory of home, say "my_dir".
3. Open that dir by hitting Enter or Ctrl+o.
4. Click Nautilus' "UP" button.
5. The behavior that I would expect for going BACK is is found! The
subdirectory ("my_dir") is now in the selection. In fact, would say this could
be another bug as well. I expect the "UP" action to act as if I am navigating
to a new directory, a fresh start. I do not want the directory I was in to be
selected.

Perhaps the code for BACK and UP got swapped accidentally?

Example use case: I want to examine a directory's contents before doing
something with it (copying, moving, deleting, etc.):
1. Open my home directory in Nautilus.
2. Double-click some directory, say "my_dir" to view its contents.
3. I see that it's some stuff I want to copy to a flash drive.
4. Use Nautilus' "Back" button to go back to my home directory.
5. Assuming that the "my_dir" directory remains selected, I can easily pick it
out in the long list of files without worrying if I got the right one or not.
I can even do a Edit->Copy without having to find "my_dir" again and reselect.

This bug may be related to Bug #64287 (spatial nautilus should remember
selected items), but that deals with "spatial" nautilus and with closed windows.

[Bug 181703] Re: Brasero does not recognize audio CD or blank CD-R

2009-04-15 Thread X Y
For anyone following along at home, a bit of cross-posting here, but
I did some reading at the linked-to Gnome bugs:

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=556449
  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=557561

Both of these bugs mention symptoms I am seeing -- Brasero is
incorrectly reporting a disc's size as zero, and then refusing to
burn it.

One thing I notice in the latter of those two bugs -- this seems like
it has possibly been fixed (?) in a later version (Brasero > 0.8.2).

What is the Ubuntu process for getting this program updated?

I'd be happy to chip in to help.

[Bug 235782] Re: P3: Regression, multiple problems when using "Places > Connect to Server" to connect to Windows share in hardy (reposted)

2009-04-15 Thread David Bensimon
** Description changed:

+ This private bug is a support escalation to parallel Public Bug #216104
+ which explains the same issue.
+
This was mistakenly filed without the private flag as bug #235774.
Notification went out to various non-Canonical people, including the
Ubuntu Bugs team. The first bug was closed as Invalid for now, this is
  a repost.

The Places > Connect to Server... dialog in hardy do not work to connect
to Windows share in hardy. There are multiple failure, and its behavior
is extremely confusing. This worked without any problem on gutsy using
the same server and same credentials.

The share we are trying to connect to is hosted on a Windows Small
  Business Server 2003 server.

   - Local username: ubuntu
   - Remote username: ubuntu
   - Windows server name: win2003
   - Windows domain name: canonical (it is an Active Directory)
   - Share name we connect to: clients

To be sure this is not a problem that have been fixed in an upcoming
update already, I installed the following package from hardy-proposed:

  nautilus 2.22.3-0ubuntu1
  gvfs, gvfs-backends and libgvfscommon0 0.2.4-0ubuntu1

  == Steps to reproduce ==

  1. Go to Places > Connect to Server..., choose "Windows Share" in
Service Type, fill in "Server", "Share", "Username" and "Domain Name"
appropriately with the value above, click the Connect button (see
  Screenshot-1.png)

  2. "Enter Password" dialog is shown. Provide password and then click
  Connect (see Screenshot-2.png)

  3. An error message is displayed: 'Can't display location
"smb://win2003/clients" -- The specificed location is not mounted'.
However, the shortcut icon appear on the desktop nonetheless (see
  Screenshot-3.png). Click Ok to dismiss.

  4. Double-click the shortcut icon titled "clients on win2003" on the
desktop. The "Enter Password" dialog is displayed again, this time with
a wrong value for Domain (see Screenshot-4.png). Change Domain from
"MSHOME" to "canonical", provide password and click Connect.

  5. The content of the share is displayed as expected, but a second
shortcut icon appear on the desktop, with the same name (see
  Screenshot-5.png).

  == Problems ==

  1. Confusing "Can't display location "smb://win2003/clients" -- The
specificed location is not mounted" message, even tough a shortcut icon
for the share appear on the desktop.

  2. "Enter Password" dialog is displayed twice: once after filling the
info in Place > Connect to Server, and then again when trying to open
the share from the shortcut icon on the desktop.

  3. The "Enter Password" have wrong value for Domain the second time it
is shown. It should display the value entered originally.

  4. When the correct domain and password are provided in the second
"Enter Password" dialog, a second shortcut to the share appear on the
  desktop with the same name.

Not sure if this bug should be filed against Nautilus or GVFS or
something else, so I left the package field blank for now.

If required, it is possible to give access to the VM for both the 8.04
clients and the Windows server. The client VM on the Montréal VMWare
server is "Ubuntu-8.04-desktop-i386", the server VM is "Windows Small
  Business Server 2003".

Related Canonical support case is #2267.

I did not report a public bug right away, as there are a couple bugs on
the subject already in Launchpad and it is unclear if and how they
relate to this one. Also, I was not sure if the bug should be reported
as a single one, or as multiple independent ones.

QA Team response deadline: May 30th 2008 11h AM EDT.

[Bug 358426] Re: Unable to start the settings manager gnome-settings-daemon after updating Intrepid

2009-04-15 Thread Paul Whipp
I've attached the result of gdb gnome-settings-daemon 2>&1 | tee gdb-
gsd-debug.txt

Looks like my original suspicion about the gstreamer update being the
root of this evil may be close to the truth :)

Let me know what you want me to do next to pin this down.

I do need to get my machine fit again (I make my living using it) but
I'm keen to help squash this bug because the forum posts and chatter on
#ubuntu following the updates indicate that I'm by no means the only
person afflicted with it.

[Bug 181703] Re: Brasero does not recognize audio CD or blank CD-R

2009-04-15 Thread X Y
Hi both dentament and huiii,

Apologies if my comment came off as silly; Ubuntu is by far the
friendliest Linux, and it can be frustrating when certain very basic
functionalities don't work right off the bat.

Now maybe this information will help in solving this Bug:

On my system, none of GnomeBaker, Nautilus, or xcdroast worked for
burning an audio CD. I tried all of them. I also tried each program
using KDE as my window manager (to rule out that Gnome might have
anything to do with my issue [yes, it would seem absurd that a window
manager would affect this, but it was a simple experiment for me to
try]). I was also not able to burn from within KDE, trying all of the
previously mentioned programs.

However -- after I had failed trying the programs through KDE, I logged
into Gnome using the "failsafe" mode. After I did this, Brasero
suddenly decided that it _could_ see my blank disc and that the
available space on it was more than 0 bytes. I proceeded to burn an
audio CD, and that worked correctly.

After the successful burn, I put in another blank CD -- back to square
one. Brasero refuses to burn it, claiming it does not have any space.

My conclusion is this -- something is absolutely wrong in the
_SOFTWARE_. My media is just fine (been using discs from this spindle
for months with no problem, the one time I did burn something it is
absolutely fine), and my DVD-RW drive is functioning just fine, too.

Something is wrong at the software level. I'd be happy to try other
experiments and/or provide log files from either programs or the kernel
messages; someone let me know.

[Bug 322068] Re: can't use Alt-Shift-Tab to cycle windows backwards if Alt-Shift switches keyboard layout

2009-04-15 Thread Oded Arbel
The fact that its not a problem in GNOME, does not mean that it is not a
problem. It just means that gnome-control-center is not the correct
upstream. This ticket still describes a real problem in Ubuntu, but as I
mentioned in my previous comment it is caused by the was X.org handles
the keyboard.

I'm not an X.org developer, I believe this is fixable by causing X.org
to do the change on key release instead of key press, emit all the
relevant key codes always, and only do the group switching (or whatever
action was supposed to be done) only if the specified keys where the
only keys used.

Binary package hint: gedit

a) No idea what Ubuntu version I have as that information is well hidden

c) The Windows applications I have tried (gedit, gimp) `disappear' as soon as

This is a follow-up to bug 12893 -- it is not a duplicate!

When you go to unmount a USB flash-drive you are automatically prompted

This appears to have been fixed in the Ubuntu 9.04 Beta release - that
worked fine on both the Jetway systems I have. Also an unreported
problem in which the systems didn't start with consistent screen
resolutions seems to have gone away.

I'm not sure that this was actually the same as the 'duplicate' bug -
this one seems to have been dependent on the particular hardware,
including the motherboard and CPU. What is the same is that changing the
priority of starting gdm was a factor in the 8.x releases.

2009-04-15 Thread obocho
Hi,

I am not sure if the bug is reproducible or not. Here are the steps
after which the bug appeared: I downloaded mac4lin pack and
placed it on my desktop. Then, I wanted install new gtk theme, thus
opened "appearance" and clicked new theme install. I forgot to
unzip the mac4lin pack, and accidentally selected the pack as a whole.
Consequently, "appearance" window disappeared, and it generated the bug.

I am pretty sure that the problem is not a serious one, but I sent the
bug report just in case.

Thanks for your effort.

[Bug 361989] Re: gnome sessions not restored

2009-04-15 Thread jimav
Strongly object that this is Low priority. This issue created huge
storms in Intrepid. Don't send us to that hell again please. See the
discussion thread in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
session/+bug/249373 for insight into why this should be high priority
now.

It is not just gnome-terminal. MANY apps do not restore properly. If
zillions of apps need to be "fixed" then something fundamental is wrong.
If the problem is that only the new dbus-oriented session stuff is
supported without compatibility with the old way, then that is a bug
until upstream apps have beed modified to be ready for that transition.
It is not okay to merge incompatible changes without regard to effects
on others.

EXAMPLE: I tried a handful, randomly picked: Firefox, Openoffice Calc,
calculator, 2 gnome terminals, gedit, Synaptic Package Manager, and
Dictionary (all started from the standard Gnome app menus). Logging out
& in again restored only firefox and gedit, plus the one terminal which
always seems to be started regardless at the upper-left corner.

I'll attach screen shots showing before and after.

Again, there are too many apps broken for this to be a piece-meal
problem with each separate app. Something central seems to be broken
and should be repaired until all apps are converted and tested.
