[Bug 363317] Re: Nautilus uses device names (floppy0, sda1) instead of humanized names (Floppy Drive, 151.8 GB Media) when running with admin rights

2009-04-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the screenshot shows a gtk fileselector which has nothing to do with
nautilus, as said the issue is that gvfs is not running for that user
and the way is to no use sudo to run graphical tools, there is probably
bugs about that on those softwares

Thanks for the reply. May I change the affected package from Nautilus to
libgtk1.2, synaptic or something similar? Or may I need to open a new
bugreport? Software Sources and Synaptic uses gksu in order to do admin

[Bug 272010] Re: Some plugins lack proper ubufox integration (Was: confusing plugin selection dialog)

2009-04-18 Thread Dave Gilbert
Alexander,
On upto date Jaunty as of today Icedtea (1st entry) installs correctly - only
other entry now shown is Java SE - haven't tried that one yet.
So yeh, that seems happier.
(IcedTea is a bit flaky - found some 100% java processes left over afterwards -
but that's separate I guess).

No, it does not. Switching from "List view 50%" (my default) to "Icon

[Bug 363361] [NEW] Lock screen dialogue freezes on correct password

2009-04-18 Thread SteveH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

Running 9.04 release candidate (upgraded from 8.10)
gnome-screensaver version 2.24.0-0ubuntu6 (I think this is the package that
handles the lock screen dialogue?)

When confronted with the lock screen dialogue (whether produced from
Lock Screen, switching back from guest session, or restoring from
suspend mode) it is impossible to unlock. If the correct password is
given the dialogue freezes at the status message "Checking..." and fails
to respond. The fan then starts up so I suspect the CPU is being used at
100%

This bug occurs with and without desktop effects. I'm running a laptop
with an integrated intel graphics driver.

[Bug 8629] Re: Evolution setup wizard does not fit in 800x600

2009-04-18 Thread Antonio Macchi III
This bug is still around on Jaunty (Beta, but right before release) with
Evolution 2.26.1

Evolution is unusable on netbooks with 800x480 screen resolution since
the minimum size of the main window and dialogues are wider than the
screen. The main problem is the width, but an overall review of the
constraints would be nice.

It would be sad if users of netbooks and devices with small screens are
ignored. As we know many new users in this category are affected.

[Bug 8629] Re: Evolution setup wizard does not fit in 800x600

2009-04-18 Thread Alan Bell
ok, lets put some effort into this one. I am not a C programmer, but lets see
where we get to.
I downloaded the source code for evolution, in the file
evolution-2.26.0/plugins/startup-wizard/startup-wizard.c it includes libgnomeui
and creates a gnome druid (a wizard) it does not do anything at all that I can
see to specify the dimensions of the druid. It seems the bug may be not in
evolution but in libgnomeui
I have seen a dell mini 9 running Ubuntu netbook remix with a small evolution
window, maybe there was a patch for the lpia architecture in libgnomeui to make
smaller druids.
Anyhow I got the source for libgnomeui-2.24.1, in the libgnomeui folder there
is gnome-druid.c, this contains some algorithms for sizing the window I think,
but I don't really understand them yet, or why they don't work.

there). Of course, it didn't cross my mind that it might have supposed
to not be there until you replied, but it does make sense.

Personally, I see no need for a separator there. If someone wants one,
they can add it. Otherwise, it just doesn't belong.

Note: I have tried going into "Customize Toolbar" and removing it, but
it is indeed a hard-coded separator.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-04-18 Thread Chris Coulson
Martin,

I don't know what version of the FUSA that you are using, but it has had
Policykit support for some time now in Jaunty, so you can shut down when
multiple users are logged in just like you can when using the old
session dialog (System -> Shut Down). I'm not sure why you see the issue
that you describe. That has been fixed for ages.

In addition to that, the FUSA now uses gnome-session to shutdown now
anyway, so the behaviour is identical regardless of which method you
use.

[Bug 8629] Re: Evolution setup wizard does not fit in 800x600

2009-04-18 Thread Alan Bell
ok, some progress. Using parasite http://chipx86.github.com/gtkparasite
I was able to determine that setting the allow-shrink property of the
window to true would be a good idea, probably as good as getting the
size right in the first place. The druid code doesn't actually create
the window, the GTKWindow is created by evolution in eutil/e-config.c in
the e_config_create_window function, which in turn was called by mail
/em-account-editor.c which was called by startup-wizard.c. I am pretty
sure that setting the allow-shrink property to true in one of these
places would be a good thing. Still digging through the code to find
where the dimensions are set.

[Bug 363435] [NEW] nautilus crashes with segfault when inserting CD

2009-04-18 Thread J. Eymann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

today I did an upgrade from ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 RC. Everything seems to
work fine so far except for one thing - when I insert a CD into my CD RW
drive, nautilus crashes and all icons on my desktop disappear. dmesg
gives me something similar to the following:

nautilus[11914]: segfault at a783000 ip b615a7dd sp b6bebfc0 error 4 in
libbrasero-media.so.0.1.1[b614a000+1e000]

I also have a DVD RW drive but the problem does not appear when I insert CDs
into it.
I booted a 9.04 RC live CD to make sure it has nothing to do with the upgrade
process and the same problem appears. When I boot from the DVD drive and insert
a CD into the CD drive, nautilus crashes. I can also boot from the CD drive to
a running gnome desktop, but the icons are missing right from the start and I
can't start nautilus or brasero.

When I eject the CD I can start nautilus from a gnome-terminal and the
icons appear again. When I insert the disk, it crashes again.

I tried activating apport to file a bug report, but it said I had too
little memory to analyse the problem and file a report (2 GB of RAM
should be enough imho, maybe another bug with apport?). Do you need
further information? Shall I send the .crash file here?

[Bug 363317] Re: Nautilus uses device names (floppy0, sda1) instead of humanized names (Floppy Drive, 151.8 GB Media) when running with admin rights

2009-04-18 Thread Ricardo Pérez López
I've tried the following:

1. In one terminal window, I do: $ sudo /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd

Now I can see a gvfsd daemon running as root user:

$ ps aux | grep gvfsd$
ricardo 6513 0.0 0.2 6832 2200 ?S18:53 0:00
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd
root 7972 0.0 0.2 6700 2104 ?S19:22 0:00
/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd

2. In another terminal window, I type: $ gksu "/usr/bin/zenity --file-
selection"

However, the problem is still present.

I can't see why Hardy's behavior is right and Jaunty's behavior isn't. I
would like to investigate a bit more, but I haven't the enough knowledge
to do that.

[Bug 363435] Re: nautilus crashes with segfault when inserting CD

2009-04-18 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a '.crash' file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using

I had this error too, fixed following the steps:

Download and install Nautilus-Sendto 1.1.1 DEB in:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/i386/nautilus-sendto/1.1.1-0ubuntu1

Run the commands:

$ sudo hciconfig hci0 reset
$ sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart

That's it, it should fix it, try to right click on a file and Send To.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-04-18 Thread Dylan McCall
I, and most people here, understand it is a design decision. That
doesn't make this less of a bug.

It's a short-sighted design decision which, while sensible for some use
cases, absolutely decimates others. I won't go into the usability of
FUSA itself, but suffice it to say it has nothing on the (very mature,
tried and true) upstream System Shut down / Log out options.

This is the same kind of design decision as, for example, choosing hot
pink Comic Sans as the default font. Explicitly chosen, maybe even by a
committee, but a serious usability regression regardless and in need of
reporting.

I'm not insisting this be fixed (I'm not the maintainer), but I do ask
that you please treat this like any other bug report and only mark it
invalid if it is, in fact, not a real problem - for example Ubuntu has
chosen to not mention accessiblity for the disabled amongst its selling
points.

Just because Ubuntu has a design team now doesn't mean people can go
ignoring serious problems because they were "designed."

2009-04-18 Thread krishanth

The track is perfectly reproducible.

Select the track you wish, then select the properties of the track with the
right-click button.
After that, a window with the properties like track name, artist, album will be
appear. When
you try to modify these properties you can't.

It happens with any format i try.
Formats tested: mp3, m4a, oga, 3gp.

[Bug 363463] [NEW] Panel does not retain initial reordering of applets

2009-04-18 Thread erusan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

1) Ubuntu Jaunty RC1
2) gnome-panel 2.26.0-0ubuntu6
3) After fresh install, unlock applets on right side of top panel, reorder and
relock. Items should retain their order after reboot or restarting gnome-panel.
4) Items revert to original order.

This happens only on the first reorder--subsequent changes are retained.
I delete all panel items on the right (including divider) except clock,
volume, and notification area.

I put them in left-to-right order:
  notification, clock, volume
After restart, they are ordered:
  clock, volme, notification

Placing them in the correct order again fixes the problem.

[Bug 363468] [NEW] Can't eject CD while audio preview is playing

2009-04-18 Thread QB89Dragon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I get an 'application is preventing unmounting' error when ejecting an
audio CD while the audio preview feature is on. Don't get me wrong - I
totally love audio preview and think it's one of the best new ideas I've
seen in ubuntu in awhile, but it shouldn't lock the drive, and should
handle errors passively, as it's more of an inconvenience to see an
error message than to not get an audio preview. My mouse cursor was
inadvertently left on the audio file while ejecting, an all too easy
thing to do. Just a little niggle if you can get it fixed.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-04-18 Thread ThiloPfennig
I think this will be a CLASSIC wrong decision. It reminds me on the
decision of GNOME to choose spatial browsing for nautilus some years
ago.

Thing is: Every big change in usability does mean people will have to
relearn stuff. So this should only be done if you have very good
reasons. Mostly this is the case if some stuff REALLY sucks.

the current design decision means that I can not use the FUSA any more.
Why? Because I am used to shutdown via system menu and do not plan to
change. Also if I add the FUSA also all administration settings are gone
and I still dont know where they are now.

So to make my points:

a) People dont like changes, unless they really make things only better
b) the design decisions renders the FUSA unusable for some people like me,
although I really loved it until recently
c) Some settings are on new locations which can not be find easily
d) Additionally I think the FUSA is now overloaded and also confusing. I now
read in german (and retranslated into english "Logged off" and "Logg off".

I think that this feature went through indicates that the community
process in Ubuntu has serious flaws, as some major concerns were not
heard. This decision alone may justify for some a switch away from
Ubuntu. What I see is arrogance. Not that Ubuntu is the only project
that has developed such arrogance, but I like to point that out in the
hope that those things will not happen again.

the major problem I guess is that the way you did incorporate the new
feature is that adding an applet changes the system menu. That sounds
very elegant but is in fact not very logical. The clean way would have
been to introduce a forked FUSA as an option and to collect user
feedback.

Personally I too still habve the window chooser on the far right which I
could not live without. But some other guys already decided before you
that I dont need that.

[Bug 343219] Re: Adding Fast User Switcher applet causes shut down options to disappear from System menu

2009-04-18 Thread Johannes Rohr
My 2¢, about what the problem is:

1. FUSA is part of the /default/ panel config in Ubuntu, meaning that it
is made harder for people who want or have to use the keyboard to
execute shutdown, reboot and so forth after a fresh install. You have to
opt out of it, not opt in. Also, you have to know in the first place,
that it /is/ a separate component that can be removed, and you also have
to know that this is the way to make another, more accessible logout
dialogue magically appear. No new user will be aware of this.

2. I actually want to have FUSA. I find it hard to accept that I should
have to remove it to get a working system menu back.

3. It is counterintuitive to have the shutdown and reboot command under
"user", as they do not shutdown or reboot the user but the system.
Therefore its only /logical/ place for people to look for it is the
system menu.

wouldn't the best solution be to make this configurable, give users the
choice?

Re: [Bug 363468] Re: Can't eject CD while audio preview is playing

2009-04-18 Thread QB89Dragon
Yes it's reproducable. Insert a cd with mp3s on it, have audio preview
playing and hit the eject button. Same is probably true of flash drives
when being unmounted.

[Bug 360278] Re: gnome-power-manager crashed with SIGSEGV in start_thread()

2009-04-18 Thread hellhound
Ok, so far I did what you recommended and managed to reproduce the bug,
but in a different way. It happens when the power cable is unplugged
when my wireless card isn't turned on, when it's on, gnome-power-manager
doesn't crash. I'm uploading the backtrace files when the wireless card
is either on or off.
